With the S5II(x) Panasonic finally fixed their external RAW output. Each chroma channel gets delivered separately and without debayering which results in tons of texture, resolution and the addition of highlight recovery. The result is at least twice as good as before and outperforms the internal output in every single discipline finally :)
Thanks for the feedback Dennis! I hope Panasonic will fix this problem on the first generation of Lumix S. I would love to be able to use BRAW more often
@@LucaBono.Studio If it's not a hardware issue, it should be possible easily. I was quite shocked (positively) when I first tested out BRAW on the S5IIX. It is mindblowingly good. Even the grain looks many times nicer.
@@DennisSchmitz Fingers crossed for the update, I also think it's possible to do it. For some commercial projects I've filmed in BRAW with the Pocket 6K, and I know how pretty the footage can be...that's why I was a bit disappointed when I start to play with the Lumix S and the VA 12g 😅

I am hoping that Blackmagic will soon release an updated version of the 12G HDR external recorders, with a more 'modern' look (slightly slimmer, with smaller bezels), USB C port shifted to the side, and ideally a CFExpress Type B slot. I love the idea of working with BRAW, but the recorders seem a bit cumbersome at present. Also thanks for your insights of RAW versus the internal. I have the S1 and have been wondering about the advantages of getting the external recorder since some time now
@@mousbleu They did announce the 6K Cinema Camera with L mount, SSD recording (which was there earlier too) and CFExpress Type B, it is a good indicator that these features could trickle down to next gen VA, whenever that comes out :)
Nice video! I would like to hear you zalk about the delay as this is the biggest problem with these cameras. Also, I'm wondering about the digital look of the braw. With my testing, picture wise, there isntwo big reasons why using braw. 1. Denoising in camera is brutal. Dark colors get destroyed by it. 2. Look at the hue channel or key a color (sp hue+sat, not a luminance value) and conpare. In camera has huge squares. Braw has so much more detail. Important when colorgrading or greenkey shoots. Somehow not a single youtube review mentions this. This is the difference between 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 (in 6k) and 4:4:4 of braw

Thank you for the video and the sample footage! I downloaded and tried to grade them. I agree, they look artificially "sharpened" for some reason(and I think that's what you referred to as digital looking). There are quite a bit of moire and aliasing happening. I wonder if that was caused by some weird upscaling/downscaling during the BRAW interpreting/recording process. I have never seen those issues with my bmpcc4k or 6k pro.
Sharpening can be fixed by turning it down in camera. Hdmi latency issue can be fixed by turning of audio over hdmi. Hdmi signal should not have any processing at all Panasonic must fix this!

@@Jae_MaV I love it! I really like grading braw. Hdmi latency is annoying but if you don't need audio it is without problem. I use it mostly for b-roll.
The S5IIx and Video Assist combo is interesting, but the latency coming out of the camera is just awful, plus the fact that the Video Assist uses external SSDs for recording which adds more bulk to the rig-at least with the Ninja V there’s a tightly integrated SSD. I would rather film direct to SSD on the S5IIx, adjust the exposure and white balance more carefully, and grade the V-log. To film BRAW I already have Blackmagic cameras in my kit.
I have an s5iix. I just got a VA, and film in V log for grading via 1TB SSD. There's a company I use called KONDOR BLUE that worked with LUMIX & created an internal SSD HANDLE. No extra bulk, much cleaner setup. It's awesome! CHRIS*STARR ✌️🤓❤️
@@alazaruz Except when you’re on a gimbal and don’t want all that extra weight up high. I prefer to clamp a Sabrent Rocket Nano SSD to the side of my cage. Takes up much less space when I don’t want a handle. And when I do want a handle, it’s easy enough to add one. I think my solution costs a fair bit less as well. Just the same, I agree that Kondor Blue makes some good kit, and the integrated handle is kinda slick, but for my use it seems like a constraint to have my storage dependent on the handle.
I am actually thinking of getting this one now after seeing your review Luca - I tend to use the Atomos Ninja V but your review highlighted some stuff I think would benefit my workflow,

I would love to now how it react with the 4:3 Braw option (like rolling shutter, colors, noise ext.), because I really love the 4:3 option, it has a super fast sensor readout, i hope it's still there in Braw!
Hi Luca, thank you so much for samples. It's gold!!! Castle show up dramatic aliasing - what I was scared for. Sunset showed no restore of highlight (but seems they fixed it for 5siiX now). But all your footage from "s1". Is Assist same good with 5s??? It seems that with s5 with low bitrate it will be more dramatic difference with BRAW. But some folks say that s5 have noise reduction backed in to BRAW and result not so sweet... Any notice?
You're welcome! The S5 has some more noise than the S1/S1H, especially on the second circuit of the gain. At the end of the day, you can live with that...it's not a big difference
Hi Luca. I'm highly interested in the ghosting images you are talking about. Can you tell us more on this. You say that the internal processing (that the clean output does not expose in recent upgrades) + LongGOP can cause these ghosting situations with motion. Did you see if All Intra or Prores (which is all intra) could partially solve thi issue? BTW thanks for your videos. Always very informative and short enough.
Hi Rudi! If you film in Prores is less visible, but it's still there by a small amount. The ghosting will completely go away if you film in RAW. Keep in mind that I see this problem of ghosting in all the consumer cameras, except for the FX6 (with the denoiser turned off)
The most annoying part of the video assist is that it's marketed as being HDR, it's right on the front of the freaking display, yet when recording in BRAW you can't get any HDR preview. That part to me is absolutely wild. Yet some blackmagic cameras have HDR up to PQ 1000 nits on the in camera display LUT options, and the cheaper Atomos devices all allow for HDR real time viewing. The marketing vs real world workflow on that is just absolutely unforgivable.
Whats funny too is it works amazingly well with HLG on the panasonics. There you can get an HDR preview perfectly, even better than any alternative. Its just too bad they dont do a better job with raw to HDR viewing.

How do you deal with the HDMI Lag??? I love my Panasonic S1 and S5 cameras, but sometimes I have to resort to manual focus. And the HDMI lag scares me if using an external monitor to help focus :(
I use the screen of the camera as much as I can and I keep the monitor zoomed in, to check critical focus only (with Lumix S cameras). It's not the best solution, I know...
Are you saying the with the latest firmware and NR set to low the S1 has visible ghosting with the internal codec? I know both the S1 and S1H had horrendous looking noise reduction originally but I thought it was taken care of after later firmware.
I see that ghosting on the S1 amd S5...many people don't see it. At the end of the day, unless you're filming commercials or films, the internal codec is good enough.
Sorry if this is not the right place to ask you.... But, Have you tried AFC on S5II with MC21 or other adapters with ef lens with the latest firmware 2.0? PdAF-AFC is still fully functional?
So you physically need the BlackMagic Video Assist 12g to actually record BRAW on this camera? You cannot record BRAW without BVA12 to a external SSD? and if not on S5II is that also the same for the DC-S5IIx ?
Hi! I've the old Lumix S5, but it's the same for all the cameras....you need the BMVA 12g to be able to record in BRAW, or you can buy a BMD Cinema Camera. Cheers!

Yeah, you are right. I just checked on the S5IIx, that I recently got. You can't film in BRAW at 24hz with this camera, you should switch to NTSC or PAL :\

There's the sample footage that you can download. Then you can check yourself if it's tolerable or not. IMHO it's fine for videography projects and small commercials

Yeah, it's wild. It might be the hdmi cable, but I've tried every single cable from amazon (8K 2.1 HDMI) and I'm getting sort of the same latency when I film in BRAW. If you don't record in BRAW the latency is less. Cheers!

None of them can be fixed. But Panasonic should definitely fix the debayer of BRAW

Panasonic fixed this problem with the new S5II/X, so they should release a FW update for the first generation of Lumix S cameras.

Yeah, if you have the S5IIx you'll be good without an external monitor/recorder...just use AF lenses and external ProRes ✌🏻

It records in 5.9k 16:9 in full frame. 4k DCI in S-35 crop ✌🏻

From an insider i heard that it is possible to activate internal BRAW recording on the S5iix, but for legal reasons panasonic locked it out.

What's the difference between the 5" and 7" aside from the size? Does the 7" provide more functionality?
Don't think so, but they have their differnt g versions for both sizes
On the 7" you have the mini XLR input and you can record on both SD cards at the same time.
Weight. 7” will make your rig heavier.

Yes, I have. It's Moiré caused by the absence of the OLPF + the bad debayered rgb information of BRAW

Yeah, you are right. I just checked on the S5IIx, that I recently got. You can't film in BRAW at 24hz with this camera, you should switch to NTSC or PAL :\

Yes, you can do it with some cameras. For example you can't do it with the Lumix S cameras, but you can do it with Fujifilm cameras.

No, it's not useless...if you can live with the digital sharpening, there are a tons of advantages while using the VA 12g

There's the sample footage that you can download. Then you can check yourself if it's tolerable or not. IMHO it's fine for videography projects and small commercials

Yeah, it's wild. It might be the hdmi cable, but I've tried every single cable from amazon (8K 2.1 HDMI) and I'm getting sort of the same latency when I film in BRAW. If you don't record in BRAW the latency is less. Cheers!
