If you own a Panasonic S5/S1 or S1H and shoot a lot of video, then the chances are you've considered either the Atomos Ninja V or the Black Magic Video Assist (if you don't already own one of the two).
Both of these external recorders are great paired with the Panasonic S5 since they allow you to output RAW video, either as ProRes RAW or Black Magic Raw.
Most of the time, people will say "if you edit with Da Vinci Resolve, then get the BM Video Assist, but if you edit with FCPX, then get the Atomos Ninja V." And while this is good advice, there's a little more to it than that.
In this video, I talk about all of the pros and cons with each of these recorders when paired with the Panasonic S5, and hopefully this video will help you make a more informed decision as to what one will be a better fit for needs.
Recording ProRes RAW and BM RAW with the Panasonic Lumix S5 is awesome though, and it's definitely something I would encourage looking into!
Thanks for watching!
I had the Attachment omos but sold it to get the Black magic video Assist . But because my other camera is a BMPCC4K I decided when I bought my Lumix S5 I decided that I would want to film. My future project in BRaw so with that in mind I had to get the Video Assist. So now the Lumix S5 & Video Assist is my A cam ( record in 5.9k F.F BRAW) Then my B cam (records in 4k MFT BRAW) . Now easy to match both BRAW's and edit in Davinci Resolve,
That sure is a pain about the USB C port on the Video Assist. Did you notice much fan noise from the VA? I never liked that on the Shogun Inferno, so am curious to know how loud the VA gets.
Thanks for the great review 👍
My biggest issue with the Atomos is that most of their devices are still HDMI only. The moment you want to upgrade to a camera with SDI, you really want to use SDI.
But then you come to Blackmagic with SDI but it has SD-cards as a recording device.
It's like an unwinnable thing
At the end of the day BRAW is easier to use across multiple platforms. But you're going to get slightly "better" results with Prores raw HQ 4K dCi or even 6k-8k. But if your standard is 4k and up then you should be good regardless. Just get everything right in camera.
I really appreciate your concise and to the point videos, my man! Thank you!
Thanks for watching dude!
Hi there, thanks for the video. I m thinking about getting the BM Video Assist. A question I ask myself is, how to put it on the handle of my FX6 and I saw soo many options. And it seems as if you found a very easy solution - I looked at gear by NITZE and amazon and there is soo much, that I m not sure which one you use. Could you let me know as I didnt find any information about it in the video description. Thanks in advance and have a great weekend :)
Hi Josh, thanks for the video! Do you reckon I can mount a Blackmagic Video Assist 12g 7'' on a caged Panasonic GH6 or that would be too heavy/unmanageable? Are you fine working with a 5'' or for certain things is too similar to your camera monitor?
Thanks again for your contents. Cheers mate!
Nice Vidéo
Because my NLE is Resolve my natural choice with S5 was Video Assist and the fact that I need to match BMPCC4K,6K with S5...Vlog Braw is super easy for that...
Great Channel yours Fil
Yep totally get that, makes sense! The video assist is great too, one thing I failed to mention was the ability to hot swap batteries since there’s two battery connectors instead of one
@@JoshCameron Yes it was one of the best features specially for me because I shoot concerts...and one feature I do with black magic I put it upside down so no problem with the USB C Port...probably you tried the same...
Great review! I use the 12g with a Sigma Fp. Its amazing footage👏🏽👌🏽 braw its pure cream 😎
Thanks Josh! You'll definitely see us in the next one, hopefully the one where you review the Sigma 16-28 f/2.8 with the S5. It seems like a perfect combo for the 28-75. Also, with the BM Video Assist, which level of BRAW compression can you record to SD cards? Is the SSD port required at all?
I'm working on that! Need to get my hands on that lens! So if you want to record the highest possible quality, then you can't use SD cards I don't think (at least not the cards I have anyway).
I found the recording 12:1 compression was fine for SD cards, but bear in mind that you will be filling up SD cards way quicker than an SSD
@@JoshCameron Thanks! Makes perfect sense. I think I'm really hoping that the next gen of BM HDR recorders incorporate the CFExpress Type B slots, allowing recording to BRAW without needing a SSD. I really love grading in Resolve, and BRAW's compression options make it a more versatile codec for my varied use-case scenario
Great video man! I've been looking for an external screen for my S5.
Cheers mate! Hopefully this helps you make your decision 🙌🏼
The (mis)placement of the USB C port kills the BM for me.
Thumbs up for the video and subbed.
Nice video. Can you output the 6K raw from the s5 to both of them?
Josh, with the atomos, can you record audio onto the atomos (rode wireless go plugged into the port on the atomos) which will match up with the video so I can turn off the audio post going to the atomos from the camera? Heard it reduces hdmi latency a lot.
One thing you could have mentioned is wether its even worth getting an external recorder. Its extra hassle when rigging and recording and i dont know wether RAW recording is worth it, for the small quality increase you get
I have a video coming out about exactly that very soon :)
I edit in DaVinci Resolve Studio, and despite the direct support for ProRes RAW in DRS, I still use the Atomos Ninja V. Save tons using the Andycine Lunchbox MSATA chassis and use with Samsung T5 1TB drives to get solid storage for the Ninja V.
I've seen those lunchbox chassis' - they look great! Might have to give them a go at some point :)
Sorry, error in my post, despite the lack of direct support for ProRes RAW in DRS, I still use the Atomos Ninja V. Not sure how to edit without loosing the like :).
What's a good workflow to edit on final cut and only do the final color on DaVinci ?
How do you go about using prores raw in DRS?
i agree with the USBC placement, is so silly, I solved it by turning the monitor upside down and locking the SSD with a phone holder and a tiny magic arm, I even had space to put a rode mic on the top using a male to male adaptor, really wished they allowed both the sound input from the mini xlrs AND the sound coming from the cameras HDMI, but as of today we only get to choose one even though they advertize up to 12 tracks of sound? how the heck can you input more than 2 tracks then, if you they only allow 2 inputs... my camera with a little adaptor can send stereo signal so I get 2 from there ... honestly have not tried the ninja but I'm very happy with the video assist on my S5MK2X
Hey, can the Black Magic VA record Log files or just BRAW and ProRes?
Any updates worth mentioning mate? Cheers for the content.
What arm do you use for the monitor when working on the gimbal? I'm looking for recomondation...
Got a video coming out on that tomorrow!
@@JoshCameron great news!
I have a atomos, how do you suggest I ensure my color is good and doesn’t need to be sent in for calibration?
I seem to remember the Ninja V ‘Instructions’ saying
To turn off the device, Tap the battery Icon on the top right of screen and then hold your finger over the Power icon for 4 seconds.
Also, I have been mulling over buying a second Ninja V since a pair of Angelbird 128 v90 cards are £300 and they only record 41mins of All i 400 (GH5 and GH5s)
A pair of 256 V90 cards would be £700
I'll have to try that, thanks!
Yeah that's an interesting one actually and it's something that doesn't get discussed enough... Media costs are super important
The main question one needs to answer is :
what is your workstation or do you already have one?
I personal hate Mac Os. = no apple hardware = no support for Pro trees raw = Black magic raw.
= video assist
= just the purchase of 350€ for the studio version.
other wise I need:
a mac and I am stuck with the hardware until I throw 2000 bugs again.
on my am4 I can just buy a 24 core cpu for 500 bugs, 5900x or similar.
Great Points brother! :D
HI jOSH. I NEED YOUR HELP... MY 7' 12G BMD Video Assist isn't recording any audio in BM Raw either through camera mic jack or 3.5 into mini XLR. I think I've gotten a defective unit. Does that thought sound correct or am I missing something simple? Audio does work in other codecs with my S5M2X. I did select RAW recording out. Thanks for any input.
Do you know if the data rates are better with the Atomos ProRes Raw?
Hi Josh, thank you for your video, could you please suggest which SSD I should use for 5.9k ProResRAW ? I also have S5 (love it) and my Crucial MX500 constantly shows "kangoroo" saying bad drive performance, really struggling, yes, Angelbird works good, but may be other SSD could be used as well ? Thank you!
Hey Josh I hope you check old comments because I’m trying to figure out if you’re forced to record braw externally with the s5ii. I want to know if I can just monitor my s5ii with the video assist instead of having to record through it.
Hey Phil! I do check old comments, and try to reply to them when I can :) I think you can just use the Video Assist as a monitor. I don't think external recording is mandatory
@@JoshCameron hey Josh thanks for getting back to me. Turns out when you disable output raw in s5ii settings and set the video assist to ProRes, you can use it just to monitor video rather than record externally!
Hey Josh, I just purchased a ninja v for my s1 and noticed that the screen was calibrated to warm with a yellowish/orange tint. How was your experience with Atomos and the process of fixing your Monitor? Also a video for monitoring v-log with the ninja v regarding exposure and luts would be great as I noticed it was a bit off when compared to the cameras monitoring tools.
Hey Danny, sounds like a similar issue I had. To be honest, Atomos were really prompt and helpful with their service. I had mine back within a week of sending it off for calibration :)
No worries, I can definitely make something like that!
Hi, how can be the monitor color calibrated? thank you for sharing! :)
What batteries do you recommend for the Blackmagic video assist 12G 7"?
Newbie here, I have the S5IIX rigged with the Kondor Blue Pro Blade with a Sandisk 2TB Pro Blade, I need a monitor, which of these two monitors I would take most advantage of?
Do you see any quality difference when using these devices versus just using the 10 bit in camera ? Is it really noticeable?
@Jerimiah Cook thank you for the reply
What if I edit on Premier Pro? Which should I get?
Hey josh! Can you please tell me what is the downside to using the BM Assist the wrong way round if you can flip the screen anyway?
It looks stoopid
Hi Josh,
Thx for the video comparison!
By any chance have you used your S5 on DJI RSC2 ?
I am facing a strange bug… with them.
Thank you
Hey Vilagi, wish I could help you here, but i've never used the RSC2 personally!
Thank you Josh, for some reason UA-cam didn’t notify my that you responded.
can the atoms ninja v capture HEVC files
Could you use a cheaper monitor for 12bit?
Hey Josh, are you going to make a review for the very new Sigma 16-28 2.8 with S5? That would be great!
If I can get my hands on one!
I’ve been waiting for a video like this. Cheers! but can I ask a favour? Please don’t keep calling the Atomos ninja (five) an ninja v
Cheers Luke! Hahaha no worries!
Damn, gonna have to go tell my coworkers at Atomos HQ we've been saying it wrong all this time :D
The usb-c external recoding on the BM is the decider for me. I won’t even look at the ninja.
Mate, you talked about color accuracy on the BM Video assistant and how you fixed it with some tweaking. Would appreciate if you could share these tips with me :-) Thank you.
Do you have latency/lag comparison between the two?
I don't unfortunately, but I think they're the same. I didn't notice any difference tbh
I saw you comment in one of your videos, that thanks to the ninja atmos v prores raw files you can edit smooth 4k video with your 2013 macbook, I have a 2012 imac that I'm thinking of upgrading, and maybe using a ninja v I could extend its useful life, do you think you could send me a couple of clips to test if it is possible to extend the life of my old imac?, thanks a greeting.
awwww I was waiting for the footage comparisons between the two..for Now i have the bmd VA 7" and been super impressed with it ;) but having a ninja just for 400usd and way lighter than the VA is a steal, i have recently used it on a film set and seeing how light it is, kinda want one lol... The VA 7" is built like a tank and is super heavy!
Comparison wise, it’s a hard task to tell the difference to be honest. The ProRes gets the edge for me in terms of overall quality I’d say (at the highest bitrate options).
Yeah it’s super light and super affordable! The ninja definitely has its place :D
Can you recorded 6k with the black magic monitor?
Great video!
Which one has the lower fan noise?
screen quality comparison?
They're both on par i'd say :)
Hi josh thanks for all the s5 vids and related content. could you tell me how you can redeem the licence for resolve? i got the video assit a little while ago. many thanks.
You should get a license key card with your product... if not, i'd contact Black Magic and reference the serial number of the item you have from them, and then hopefully they can sort you out :)
@@JoshCameron thanks for the reply🙂
HI Josh an other nice video. I'm a lumix S user from France and i'm looking for the best external ssd compatible with my BlackMagic video assist to record all codec available in all resolution especially 6K braw. I'm using an S1. Do you have some recommandation ? THX a lot !!
Hey Matt, thanks for watching and greetings from the UK.
I'd probably suggest the Samsung T5 since it's small and very quick!
Myabe I missed it in the video but which do you find yourself using more and is there a reason for that?
Personally I find myself reaching for the Ninja V more often, purely because of the media storage option being a little better for my workflow. I like to have SATA SSD’s as working drives, so it’s a nice touch that I can just take the recording drive and then use it as my working drive.
I also edit in FCPX exclusively, so for me I’ll always favour ProRes :)
@@JoshCameron I have the BM one. A solution that I found for recording on the video assist that I like a lot is a nvme drive into a sabrent aluminum case that is very small (and completely tool less so if I have more than one nvme i can swap on site) . Is so light and small that i can strap it on the back with adhesive velcro and forget it.
Been trying to make my mind up on which one to buy with my S5... I've been working with PP and AE CS6 for the last decade, holding off on getting a CC subscription. Now Davinci Resolve is looking really enticing, and I was wondering if the 12G video assist also comes with a license for Resolve Studios, like other BM cameras. Does anyone know? It probably is the deciding factor for me.
I think it might do. What i'd do is check with the retailer you'd buy from or check the product description etc and you may be able to find out :)
Thanks - a common dilemma I think , so your input is useful.
Thanks Paul!
Can you use a SATA SSD on the BM Video Assist via USB-C adapter?
I haven't tested it myself, but I can't see why that wouldn't work!
Differences on dybamic range between internal and Braw recording?
Just starting to consider something like this to pair with my S5. Is there an option that is better with Premiere Pro? That is where I edit most of my projects.
I think both will be good for Premiere since you can use both ProRes and BM Raw I believe.... I'd double check that though!
@@JoshCameron Thanks!
I’ve been looking for this
🙌🏼
I have an S5 and use the free version of resolve but I think I am leaning more towards the Ninja because of the price but would have to switch to final cut. Can you edit with the view assist in free version of resolve? Thanks
Hi Dan, thanks for watching. When you buy the assist, you’ll get a free license to the full Da Vinci Resolve studio! So that would solve your issue :)
Price wise, the Atomos is far more affordable, and you could still edit in resolve if you shoot a compressed ProRes codec (anything but ProRes RAW ! )
@@JoshCameron Thanks for the fast response👍
Hey, does the video assist have anamorphic desqueeze options?
I believe so.... I could be wrong though! I never checked!
Thanks !
hi josh you have a problem with the ninjaV and pana s5?
i have glitch in recorded file.
i can help me?
thank you Josh.
Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to help, but if I were you i'd reach out to either Atomos or Panasonic directly and hopefully one of their engineers could troubleshoot the issue for you :)
@@JoshCameron Thanks Josh, other people also had the same problem as me even changed the ninja V and the panasonic S5 camera, but they kept having the glitches...
I sent the report to Atomos and they told me to contact the supplier
Hey mate, can i record prores with vlog profile on atomos? is there such thing?
Hi mate, if you're shooting ProRes RAW then it'll be a log profile already - just make sure your colour space is set to V-Log/V-Gamut in the Atomos Record menu.
Also, if your camera is already set to V-Log then it'll read it from there :)
@@JoshCameron thanks a lot josh! You just made my mind on the atomos! I was more concerned with the ease of use of the files than the raw itself, and as I am a davinci user a prores vlog would be perfect for me! In some tests, gerald udone noticed that the raw is not much different from the vlog, so having a smaller and cheaper recorded it is gonna do the job! Thanks a lot!
Oh, shootings prores doesnt crop the sensor, right?
Does the 5" non HDR Video Assist work with S5?
It should do as a monitor, but not too sure as a recorder...
TRIGGER ME! Hi, I I shoot BRAW on my s5iix using a blackmagic Video Assist 12G, 7 inch. I have a smallrig top handle with a red 'record' button to trigger start/stop recording using the usb c to remote mini jack cable that came with this handle. When I used this top handle for recording BRAW with my GH6 the trigger button worked perfectly. What a treat. Unfortunately my s5iix doesn't seem to send this trigger signal to my Video Assist... I get an error message on the screen of my s5iix, by the likes of : "This function is disabled while sending raw data over hdmi". I'm crying in the corner. Anyone got a solution?
Could you compare the footages side by side please. I mean braw vs prores raw and try to push the colors so we can see the benefits of 12bit over 10bit. Thank you
I have a video coming out very soon that will do just that :)
Ninja 5(!), not "Vee" ;-)
The hate on Avid DNx? lol
Ninja is just cheaper
you talk too fast
Working on it - sorry my friend!
Atomos has sdi support. You need a module but it has it
Does Resolve Studio come bundled with Video Assist 12G HDR 5" ?
Yep!
@@JoshCameron Yo thanks for the instant reply ☺️☺️
