TOTAL Click bate. Freedom of speech is not the same as reinterpreting someone else’s words to suit your narrative. A title like “what Sir Rowan Atkinson thinks about free speech today” would have been more accurate. You are not a building a truth worthy relationship with your audience.

This hadn't got anything to do with "DESTROYING Woke Culture", though, now had it? That was cynical clickbait, and you should be ashamed of it. You've used an intelligent argument to serve a crass headline - there was no excuse for that.

This is a problem, or was, in the political party to which I happen to belong, which began a trawl of social media comments in order to combat, as they saw it, anti-Semitism. Not so much it transpires because they thought they could by doing that prevent anti-Semitic comment, as because they were afraid that such comments as were made might hang around the shoulders of the party in a pre-election period and damage our prospects of victory. I'm still not entirely sure what I think about that; members of a political party are, after all, in a different position to those who are not; they owe an obligation to their party not to embarrass or damage it (one could wish that the party were more aware of its obligations to its members, but leaving that aside - the point is made; one has a duty not to hurt the party which has granted one membership). However, that's a prohibition or condition that needs sensitive handling - which is not what it got, as party bureaucrats sifted through any number of comments which THEY considered might be damaging; applying the most restricted and constricted interpretation they could in order to make a case for referring their victims, for want of a better word, to an anodyne but compulsory course of correction, dimly master-minded by a charitable trust to which the party had referred its response, but not its investigatory processes. Some went along with that, to be rewarded by an approving nod; others told the party to, basically, screw itself - which might have resulted in various responses, from expulsion, to cautions, to the bureaucracy backing away red-faced. Whatever the consequences for the member, the process was motivated by fear of reputational damage - not by principle; fear engendered by the irresponsible stupidity of a previous leader and one or two of his admirers; and that's why I'm still unclear as to whether it was justified or not: because he had profoundly damaged the party, and his successor, by denying there was a problem at all when there very clearly was, and incidentally still is (suggesting that this mini-purge largely failed to achieve its aims - although some were removed from the party who should never have been admitted to it; complicating the issue further: there WAS a problem; something had to be done about it; the question in my mind remains: was this really the best way, or even an acceptable way, to police party opinion?). Internal debate is one thing: Rowan Atkinson isn't primarily talking about members or organizations who need to pay some heed to their organization's reputation: but still - the mindset and thinking are very similar, and the dangers of an excess of caution turning to outright censorship remain. One of those dangers is that such organizations will develop a mentality they then apply to those outside of the party or group - will form a self-protective circle of waggons, or castle walls; and will embrace a totalitarian, or at least authoritarian, stance which will in due course imprison them in intellectual certitude and sterility.

I have to agree with Rowan. Woke culture has ruined comedy, tv shows, movies and video games. Because of that, we can’t say certain words or design characters in a certain way. If something doesn’t appeal to modern audiences, they throw a hissyfit. Remakes of games like (example) Tomb Raider had to be censored a tonne because Lara looks to sexual. Looney Tunes had to go 13+ just to have a fraction of their original comedy, seriously, woke culture is just insane.
