- We have come to an end of our Alan Moore-athon with one of the most misguided attempts at adaptation, Batman: The Killing Joke from 2016. Despite having the likes of Paul Dini, Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill lending their skills it falls flat in almost all ways. Animation, interpretation, additions, it's bizarre. But luckily at the end we also look at a good thing in the Justice League Unlimited episode For The Man Who Has Everything to wrap everything up. What's really interesting is that Alan Moore really wanted superman to dream of a simple fulfilling life of being a farmer like his adoptive father in Smallville. With his advanced alien knowledge of planet hues and how they associate to the peak of level of growth, he made a unique plant desgin to be a combination of cyan and magenta. This was why his yearly yield of products was called the blue harvest.

@@TheRedAzuki The Harley series, for as much as it plays fast and loose for humor, sometimes swerves into devastating emotion. That episode you're talking about might be the first portrayal of the Wayne murders in many years that actually made me FEEL for Bruce Wayne's trauma.
Rip Conroy, the one true batman
Bruce Timm's obsession with ruining the Dick-Barbara-Bruce dynamic has always been so confusing. The one big stain on an otherwise stellar version of the DC universe.
Yeah this movie along with some other decisions has made it so I'm not automatically excited to see his name on stuff anymore.
To be fair it makes sense, since that started in batman beyond.
If his wife irl is half his own age; everything makes sense now.
@@georgehernandez2156 I loved Batman Beyond. I was also 10 years old, so the "fresh look" was fittingly edgy for the year 2000 or so (maybe 1999, I don't remember). Also being a kid, I had nothing of a mind to compare and anthologize the different Batman works thru the years, I was just happy I had a cool cartoon to watch at 7 pm after dinner. (I had JUST gotten my own Orion 12" CRT with built-in VCR, {fancyyy} so no more having to sit with Mom to watch Law/Order LMAO)
its less confusing when you realise bruce timm has a thing for red heads and that bruce wayne has the same first name as him... Putting two and two together h's essential using batman as a stand in for himself, because he thinks batgirl is hot and wants to bang her. I'm fairly certain hes drawn nsfw artwork of batgirl too but i may be wrong about that. He defiantly has drawn nsfw art of red heads tho.

It pains me that this the last time both these voice actors worked together.

Actually LEGO DC Super-Villains is the last time they worked together. That was 2018 whilst this was 2016, though I may be wrong as there could be something else

A Weekend at Bernie’s style Killing Joke sequel where Batman is glued to the corpse of the Joker and he has to navigate the worlds of both Batman and Bruce Wayne is exactly what I always wanted to see, but never knew I wanted.

The whole "Bruce and Barbra had a romance at some point" seems to be a thing Bruce Timm is REALLY into as it was hinted at building in The New Batman and Superman Adventures and Batman Beyond was post that relationship happening. But at least in the case of Beyond it was implied it was mostly one-sided as a "school girl crush meets mid-life crisis" kind of thing, a VERY bad EXTREMELY messy idea, and mutually cut-off by both of them BEFORE it escalated to the point they were having angry rooftop sex.
And Timm might have only been stopped back in the day from letting them go that far because S&P was still on him enough to say, "You can't imply a 30/40-year old man and a barely legal teen did the Horizontal Batusi!"
Honestly, I'm kind of surprised Timm didn't add Harley Quinn to the story to hit the rest of his fetishes.
I do believe Bruce got Barbra pregnant and she had a miscarriage in the DCAU or tie in comics.

Um I have some bad news for you. They didn't cut it off. The tie-in comics basically explain that Barbara cheated on dick with Bruce and got pregnant which led to dick finding out leading to the destruction of the bat family.
It was a decent 48 minutes movie adaptation that starts when batman comes with bullock to investigate a crime scene, im glad that where the movie starts and there is nothing before that point

I've said it before, they should've focused on Batgirl's origin instead of that incredibly frustrating opening involving Paris Franz. Show Barbara's first night out as Batgirl where she saves her father at a Halloween party. That way, you can show the audience how fun it is to be a superhero and then juxtapose it with the rest of the movies nihilism.
So it's the rare case of an Alan Moore adaptation where there wasn't enough material to stick in a 2 hour movie.
And instead of cutting essential material that fleshes out the characters and world for running time, it adds a bunch of crap that actively damages characterization and world-building for padding. It really is the anti-Watchmen, isn't it?

I always loved in “For the man who has everything” the great little touch where Jor-El briefly talks in the voice of Pa Kent.
Yes it shows that even in Superman’s perfect world he would include his earth friends and family in some form.
no mason you're right. they explicitly reference the events of killing joke in death in the family. Its stated to be the last thing joker did before getting sent to arkham (before he escapes in death in the family) and barbara is shown to be in a wheelchair at Jason's funeral. Him crippling barbara is part of the reason the response to joker's escape from law enforcement is shown to be extreme enough that he is forced to flee the country. They even mention the justice league is actively searching for him.
The dedication to the blue harvest bit is incredible. Just when I think it's run its course, it comes back

So it’s so clear that their goal with all the batgirl stuff was an attempt to subvert one of the go to examples of fridging. And they somehow make it more sexist. Why make her character even more dependent on the men in her life if you trying to subvert the sexist trope of doing that.

Now that we have The Batman Who Laughs, we need a standalone series of The Batman Who Glues Himself To Things.
I always thought they should’ve made the first part Batgirl when she was first starting out and teaming up with Batman to help stop the Joker. But we never actually see the Joker, he’s always just off screen or shrouded in shadows or fog when Batman fights him and it’s all from Barbara’s point of view, so when we finally see him is more momentous. And Batman is reluctant to work with her and she’s nervous about taking on such a responsibility and burden of crime fighting, but over the segment she grows confidence in her abilities and skills and Batman grows to respect her as a crime fighter… so that way when she gets shot, it’s more tragic and gut punch like “oh no, she was so good at her job and she was so happy, this sucks”… it’s better than rooftop sex lol

Absolutely, there’s a great line in Hush comic where Batman talks about how much Barbara enjoyed being Batgirl and how much it crushed her to be robbed of that livelihood. It shouldn’t be about any weird and creepy romance with Bruce, it should be about how Barbara enjoyed being a hero and how good she was at it and how horrible it was that it got taken away from her.

It's been a while since I've laughed at anything as much as the part at 20:57. Just reading that text on screen while Mason rambles about nonsense. Everything came together just right.
I had to pause for a minute for my own laughter at the editors' cry for help, after Mason's 50th "glued to something" joke.

The musical sting and the spinning onscreen text "HAVING SEX WITH BATMAN" destroyed me. And that was even before the glue runner. Ben and Laurence deserve a Nobel Prize for this one!
The "It's just seeeeex!" cry near the start made me curl up with cringe so quickly that I ended up with a similar spinal injury to that which Babs experienced.
My God I never thought I would hate batgirl for being a dump, but here we are
The whole reason for the first half of the movie with Batgirl is that they planned on following 'The Killing Joke' as accurately as they could. But the problem, by the creators of this logic, is that anyone that (somehow) hadn't read, seen or heard of how the story goes, might be at a loss for who Barbara is, because they don't actually mention 'Batgirl' in the story.
So their logic was add to the runtime with an extra story of their own making purely just to set up in peoples heads that Batgirl is a thing. And she's Barbara. That way you know the significance of the Joker just getting wildly lucky in shooting the woman that turned out to be Batgirl.
In theory, it's not a bad idea.
Problem was that original story to start the movie really just butchers Batgirl as a character and is all around awful. Like, you can practically _feel_ the quality difference on your brain between the first half and second half.
So yeah, you suffer it once. If you somehow didn't know Barbara was Batgirl, you do now. From here on you can skip right the hell over that awful first segment and get right to the actual Killing Joke story.
Watching it fresh and with the “controversy” in mind, it’s really hard not to notice how leering the camera is with Batgirl/Barbara even before her interactions with Franz & Batman. The first act actively damages the “One Bad Day” thesis statement in that the Joker flashbacks (or atleast delusions of a flashback) feel even further out of place in this amalgamation. They built sympathy for a character that was already sympathetic instead of their Devil.
The problem is the THE KILLING JOKE comic is overrated trash if the first place.

I know it was like dessert. That episode is my favorite because it is the perfect blend of action and heart aching moments.
I love Laurence's (or is it Ben's covering?) plea... Almost as much as I love knowing Nick Mason will NEVER stop this style humor.

That episode of JLU is one of my favs. It's so heartbreaking and powerful. Batman trying his hardest to free Superman while Wonder Woman is just getting beat to death, is probably one of the most intense moments of the show.

It’s honestly the perfect episode, a lot of humanity in all the characters, non stop action, dreams, tearful goodbyes and hope in the end. This is one of the few shows that can make me cry.
On a scale of bad decisions, I think having Batman and Batgirl bone is up there up filling the Hindenburg With Hydrogen
Well, the US pretty much owned all the helium in the world at the time so the Zeppelin Company was shit out of luck.
Even if that weren’t the case though, what gas it used for lift is irrelevent since just as many helium-lift airships crashed as hydrogen-lift airships.

That scene where the Joker pulls a gun on Batman, pulls the trigger and it ends up being one of his harmless bang-flag guns, and he looks at it with mild disappointment and says, "Oh, God dammit..." I lost it. One of the funniest Joker moments of all time to me.

I actually prefer the JLU version of "For the Man Who Has Everything" to the comic. The elements of society splintering political unrest on Krypton muddy the appeal of the beautiful dream reality for Superman. The more simplistic version in JLU makes it much more obvious why Superman would actually want to stay in black mercy's lie and as a result it hits way harder when he has to reject it.
They likely also had to leave Batman's dream as Thomas Wayne beating on Joe Chill. Since they already did a Batman version of this story with Madhatter in TAS.

The original Killing Joke doesn't have anything to do with Barbara aside from being shot. Joker had no clue she was Batgirl. It's not about Batman really, Jokers plan is to mess up Gordon. So I'm sure, that after the studio actually read the book they decided to make it about the person who was most affected by the story.

It may be nostalgia talking but Justice League Unlimited was really the peak of the DC fandom in animated form.
Idk if it was peak but it was certainly was a great show. Basically all the animated shows before then where good. Jl,btas, superman,static shock.
@@cngotham4111 People were still taking risks then instead of sticking only to a formula. They also weren't treating kids like they were as fragile as they're treated now, they trusted the kids to be able to parse out adult situations. Batman Beyond, Gargoyles, JL, JLU, Static shock, all of them had big adult themes they explored without making them "adult". A little trust in the audience goes a long way
I've always felt that the way to extend "The Killing Joke" to feature length is to stick "A Death in the Family" in there. Having Joker kill a Robin fits with the theme of messing with Batman's allies.
How many more episodes before the in-jokes make the trivia segment completely inaccessible to new audiences? I love it, keep up the great work

I just picture the editors reviewing the audio for these videos and staring at their computer like the meme of the dad in coralline when they hear masons running joke of the video being like “I loved cat woman when she does the cat laser vision”, and then have to make several two second clips of jpgs of cats shooting out of Michelle Pfeiffer eyes

I hate that this isn't Bruce Timm's only attempt to make Batman and Batgirl do a big sex. I saw Killing Joke in theaters, you know what reaction that moment got? Laughter. Nervous, unsettled laughter. So uncomfortable.
Looks like we’re going from an Alan mooreathon to a James Cameronathon. Hype. Also, is the glue yourself to stuff going to be a recurring gag like Blue Harvest or “Rodney!” Or is it going to be a one in done for this episode.?

The killing joke was interesting, but yeah they just seemed tired. I think the nostalgia critic suggested they could have replaced the batgirl scene with a montage of TAS Batman-Joker face-offs and it would have set the stage much better
Ah. Like how "The Shootist" did for John Wayne, using a bunch of stock footage from older Westerns he did to set the stage for his later year, slowly dying gunslinger as he goes through a week in a town.
That thomas wayne beating up joe chill montage cutting to batman smiling is the only time batman smiling has not been unbelievably cursed to me

I think Alan Moore once said his favorite Watchmen adaptation was the Harry Partridge "Saturday Morning Watchmen" and that just makes me happy

I absolutely adore Justice League Unlimited. I know it’s not perfect, but I don’t care, it’s a cartoon I always like going back to. It was the only DCAU show I saw as a kid and that was before I even got into comics. I’ve seen more since, but JLU’s dialogue and tone still get to me. Would love to see you guys cover more JLU stuff.
P.S. the Hawk and Dove episode is underrated imo. Also hearing the intro song just makes me so happy and excited lol.
Likewise, for me the DCAU is the only DC comics I really need. I am so obsessed with the show that I binge watch it all once a year. My favorite episode is actually for the man who has everything but after that I love “The Return”.

There was a comic published just before the Killing Joke titled "The Last Batgirl Story" and I really wonder why they didn't just adapt that for the prologue

love the consideration of Clark's trauma at coming out of the "perfect world" dream. It was touched on a little in House Of M with Spider-Man but not as much as I'd have liked. Sadly with comics there's always a new thing coming along quickly so they rarely delve into the consequences of things like this.

@3:30 We can take the example of Robin in Batman: The Animated Series. He popped up in the series without having any kind of introductory story or explicit information about his background and his ties to Batman. Which totally makes sense since the character was so notorious. He's the opposite of Two-Faces. Harvey Dent appeared once as district attorney. He appeared afterward as being the guy poisonned by Poison Ivy in her introductory episode. He then got his two-parters when he turned into Two-Faces.
Also, you can expect the film audience to already know the great lines of the lore. Let's be serious, people who'll watch the film will know it is the adaptation of a graphic novel. And this graphic novel itself was thought as a stand-alone.
Batman’s bat glue should be a running gag. If you retired blue harvest and replaced it with a story involving Batman gluing himself to something in the film your covering that would be a fitting replacement!
You all should do the old old James Bond movies. Connery, Moore, Dalton… Maybe Lazenby…
Great idea to end with an actually great adaptation with the Superman For the Man Who Has Everything episode
The Killing Joke 3: Batman accidently glues himself to every member of the Justice League and becomes "The Living Katamari."
I listen, mainly, for the inanely specific jokes. I finally don't feel alone.
I like the twist on that Barbara-Bruce scene (you know which one) Batman having glue on his glove and tapping Barbara's shoulder taking her shirt off by accident, and Batman committing to the idea he did that on purpose and having sex with her just cause he wouldn't admit it was an accident

I remember seeing this in the cinema. Awkward would be an understatement. What kills me is that other DC animated releases absolutely deserved the cinema release and the money it cost make.
Agreed under the red hood or return of the joker deserve a theatrical release
Batgirl's story being glued to the front of this adaption, really shows that sometimes...less is Moore.
Green Trivia is my absolute most favourite section of any video series ever.
Mason is correct in asserting that A Death in the Family comes after The Killing Joke, both canonically and chronologically. There is dialogue in A Death in the Family that suggests this is the first time the Joker has been at large since the events of The Killing Joke, and that every law enforcement organization and superhero team will be after the Joker "after what he did to Barbara."
I am never going to get tired of the blue harvest joke
Seeing that Killing Joke animation edit makes me realize how badly we need an animated Batman movie in the caliber of Spiderverse.

I think the only reason people would assume Bats kills the Joker at the end of the comic is specifically because they want it to end on the even bigger downer that Batman ultimately fails.
They just want the hero to lose.
Gotta say, as much as I already like Hamil, him saying he won't voice the Joker again after Conroy's death made me respect him even more
