I was 24 and my room mate and I were going, but I got sick. Eric (my roomie) was a serious Zappa fan. Eric departed this world in late 2022 and right before he passed we were talking about Zappa and this show. So sad I missed in real life.

I remember finding a tape on the street when I was about 17 years old. Nothing was written on it but I was curious and played it anyway. The music mezmerized me and I couldn't stop playing it. I had never heard of Frank Zappa so it took me a couple of years to find out that the album on it was in fact "Overnite Sensations". I started collecting more Frank Zappa albums but this one remained special to me. It was 1977.

I was there. I was at a lot of the Palladium shows. Personally, I think the Roxy-era band, which I never saw live, having discovered Frank too late (1975), was his best band ever. And I also think his SG playing was the best-sounding. The unique wiring on that axe gave him more tonal variety.

This is what the woman, Nina Blackwood had to say about it:
**The hardest and worst interview that I have ever done was with Frank Zappa. Ugh! It was a nightmare. I feel bad saying this because he is no longer with us, but he was a nightmare. I hope I never run into anything as terrible as that again. He was deliberately being Frank Zappa. It was the first live broadcast that MTV ever did. It was his yearly concert that he used to do from The Palladium on Halloween. I was the host. Even in rehearsals Frank was really obnoxious to me. Between my lack of experience and him being obnoxious, it was just a nightmare. Enough said. It was a very bad experience. (...) It was baptism by fire. Now, with the chip on my shoulder that I have developed, I wouldn't tolerate it. Back then, I was young and we were trying to do our best. I was an easy target. It was a cheap shot and he didn't have to do that. If Frank wanted to be smart then do it to Walter Cronkite or something, but not a twenty-something little girl doing her first live broadcast.**

Chad Wackerman: at the time, after Bozzio and Colaiuta, my young self thought Chad was just ‘very good’ but I have grown to see past the attitude and star power and now think his is just as good as those guys! Incredible technical abilities paired with a sense of groove and power that is hard to find. I guess that was 1968. Then, after my 30 months in Nam, I left the service in Phoenix. that's when his 70s albums came out..."one size fits all' , apostrophe, over-nite sensation, hot rats...and I turned on my best friends to Zappa to great enthusiasm. the early 70s were an unbelievable time in rock music.

Was at this show! RIP the Palladium, one of the best places to see a show, better than the Garden. The balcony was especially good. I was up there for Rush and during Cygnus X-1 we watched the massive old chandelier shaking. We thought it was going to fall on the crowd. I'm glad I was around for those shows, especially FZ.

Frank Zappa crossed the border of musical genres with his innovative and brilliant compositions, provoking the conservative establishment ❤

Yep, I too saw him for the first time in '80 and I too was only 14. It was in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in a stadium with bathtub acoustics called 'the Ahoy'. Got some very surprised looks from quite a few long haired people in the audience. Take care!

I just happened to be in Manhattan visiting my sister just a few blocks uptown from the Palladium. I heard about the show that afternoon and decided to walk to the Palladium just to soak up the fandom. I soon noted fairly good tickets were selling third party, & as being alone greatly improves the odds of a great scalped seat, I ended up in the 3rd or 4th row of the balcony just about dead center for the marked price of the ticket. One of those times it all comes together. I was a complete stranger to Steve Vai in 1981 and remember the impression of “who the hell IS this guy?” What a night.

I swear I'm here for the music, but I'm loving the extended interview intro. Humor belongs in music, and to do it the best, you need a killer band that can play anything while keeping the audience involved. Zappa, Weird Al, Steel Panther, GWAR, etc.

Wow! I had never seen this, Zappa on top of his game as usual with all the heavy hitters Steve Via, Scott Thunes, Ray White & Chad Wackerman. Which all would end up on The Man From Utopia album which was released in 82. Funny... Ray White sounds a lot like "Ike Willis" ... greatly miss Frank Zappa, thanks for posting this.

Amazing, I don't know how these guys did it other than rehearse their asses off constantly. Listen to the time signatures, the rythms changing on a dime. I notice in a lot of Zappa compositions, he will have a riff played then completely stopped - silence - then started again. That is damn hard shit to play because the mentality you get into as a musician is that the music flows and you can get lost. This though, you gotta be right on top of your game, because it dont flow man. Steve Vai said they has to remember 80 compositions and every night Frank would create a new set list

Zappa era mi genio favorito (y sigue siéndolo).

Both Drummers Terry B and Vinnie C were the same young age when they started with Frank as well!! Not to mention Steve Vai was only 18!!! I actually auditioned for Frank (with Chad) at the same time - same age - before this... That's the age when we all really "had it" (think about it - we started playing around 5 - 7 years old - and played non stop - took private lessons - through school bands, garage bands , etc... and for me - I was playing drums to Frank's LP's since I was 12... I was ready.... but Chad was more ready ...lol...
