Frank was in the zone. He endured growing up in Lancaster in the 50s (then a one-horse town), he was thrown off stage and seriously injured at The Rainbow in '71, and in 1990 was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer. Despite all this, he left us with such magical, timeless music and an incomparable sense of humor - thank you FZ.
I'll never understand how anyone thinks the Philly show is better than this. I've been listening to this for over 20 years now, and Frank is on a different level this night.. And this is just the early show! The late show is an absolute shred fest. To each their own, but I just do not hear it. Frank sounds off in the Philly show, whereas here he's doing these beautiful palm muted phrases that are out of the ordinary. That crazy chromatic build up at the end of Napkins.. The tapping section! You can just tell he's really feeling it. Listen to You Didn't Try To Call Me from this show. Even on that tune Frank is playing these great passages at the end, and they're not even there on the Philly show.
Couldn't agree more. I see so many detractors these days that talk about immature lyrics etc. As if that's all there is to his music. It's part of the beauty of it all. Never taking anything too seriously, but the music delivers so much raw emotional playing. Incredible diversity packed into one performance. It doesn't get any better.
This is one of my all time favorite live recordings, period. And I collect live music. All three solos - voice, violin, and guitar are just sublime... this is as good as it gets. Happy Birthday, Zappa would've been 75 today.
@michaelklein6967 I know it's 8 years ago.. I'm just listening to this and I'm amazed, too. I only knew a shorter version of this one with only the violon and guitar solo in the middle - that was already one of my favorit versions aswell, but I didn't know about this complete version here. Great find! Recently I found another very nice version with trumpet, sax, violon and guitar - you should check it out aswell. ua-cam.com/video/bvczPfJ3VIQ/v-deo.html
Great song, didn't matter what drug we were on or stone cold sober. The car audio & home hi fi were at its peak in the 70's. Always wandered why Frank insisted on playing this one live with his back to the crowd?
He didn't. There's plenty of videos available right here on UA-cam where he plays this facing the crowd. I've been studying Zappa for 30 years now, and I've never seen Frank play a solo with his back to the audience. The only time Frank turns his back to the audience is when he's conducting/giving cues to the band.
These people are smoking crack. The Boston show is so much better than the Philly show. Frank was absolutely on fire, as was the rest of the band. The Philly show doesn't even come close.
All feature Eddie Jobson on violin, but I agree with Dirigible that the 28-min version on Deluxe Zappa in New York is incredible, with Jobson, Zappa, and Brecker Bros.

the 20th century greatest composer and guitar player
Most influential, overlooked, most prolific, genre busting, insightful, brilliant.....music is the best. 😊

21-year-old Eddie Jobson on violin (and Hammond); just inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2019). The first rock violinist.
Eddie Jobson was great with UK and Fripp
WITH JEAN LUC PONTY TOO !

Coeur
Fav version of Black Napkins; beats the Philly '76 release.
I dont think so, Philly 76 is the best live Black Napkins version
These people are smoking crack. The Boston show is so much better than the Philly show. Frank was absolutely on fire, as was the rest of the band. The Philly show doesn't even come close.
is the pitch correct op?
Øystein,N austevoll
hallo Ween that number :-)
Great version but Philly 76 is the best live Black Napkins version For Ever
Maybe the best version is from Zappa in New York, Deluxe bonus. 28 minuts of art
Le servirete noir, live in Paris, for me! 👋🏻🍀
