I’m surprised by how much positive comments this video got! This in no way showed anyone how to actually move a piano. This video should be titled, “how to wrap and prepare a piano before it is moved!”
This is so unnecessary...taking off the music desk, hinges, and lid. Just more things to get damaged being separated from the piano. Im moved over 3,000 pianos and never damaged a single one keeping those parts on. It also makes less things to carry/drop, saves time, and less likely to leave at the warehouse/storage area. No thanks
@@mikerollins3088 as I understand it, the piano is tipped onto side where Edge of lid would be, leaving lid would put piano weight on the edge of lid and hinges.
@@MarcLaurens1 you're right as far as tipping it onto the side with the hinges...however, on a skidboard we only slide the piano over far enough so the lid rests up AGAINST the padded board that transports it. We dont pull the lid up and ON to the board, so there is no weight bearing on the lid or hinges and therefore no damage results. I definitely understand why you would mention that tho. Just not something to worry about with the technique we use
I have had my grand piano moved 5 times here in France in and out of apartments, I watched every step they did. I wouldn't hire the movers in the video.
If you want to move your piano both SAFELY & properly, make sure to consult your local music store. If they sell pianos, its highly likely they have piano-moving team specifically dedicated to this with years of experience. Do not trust a regular moving company without first consulting someone who handles moving pianos regularly: music store!!
I could move that piano in ten minutes by myself. You don't have to remove the music rack or the lid. I know its an old school Yamaha just by the lag bolts in the third leg.
This is a waste of time you said move in 3 minutes as a professional piano mover that’s taken over a half hour not necessary to remove the lid music rack and over kill on the wrapping that’s why you move 2 pianos a day and I 10!
Amateurs! A procedure that's not well thought out. A perfect example how lids get damaged folks! A crescent wrench? That's how legs get scratched. If your going to remove parts off the thing, then why leave the action in? Were those hammers flopping around?
The lid isn’t getting damaged because the “lip” is hanging over the paint board that they put it on. They didn’t just drop the piano to the bare floor; they put it on a grand piano board.
No reason to remove the lid in the first place if your using a SKID board. The height of the board allows the lid to not contact the ground. These are indeed amateurs.
no thank you take the hinges off. I have done far too many repairs of the side of the case because the instrument is layed over on that dise to move it and the hinges touch the ground first if you are not REAL carefull.
when people tape around each leg of a chair or bench it makes me want to slap them silly. IMO there's no reason not to set it down upright and wrap it like that. beautiful level of care, tho! and good thing you're not in the video editing business lol. that silly title overlay just wouldn't quit!
if something falls or someone grabs in between the legs, the fabric will have nowhere to go except to compress the legs towards each other, risking damage. You don't have to tape the legs, but don't start the wrapping from the open legs end either.
Android Kenobi i can see that possibility but i havent seen it happen. if the legs in particular are that fragile i would avoid the weight of a pad on them altogether.
so very wrong - I'm a second generation piano store owner. DO NOT EVER ALLOW A PIANO MOVER TO REMOVE THE PIANO LID. You don't want the action and strings (the expensive stuff) unprotected and accessible on (of all things) a moving truck. Also why risk scratching the case by having movers remove & reinstall your piano lid hinges. The hinges are not meant to be removed unless the piano is being refinished. It weakens them plus you risk losing the pieces. WHO BLANKET WRAPS A PIANO WHILE IT IS VERTICAL AND EXPECTS THE BLANKETS TO REMAIN IN PLACE DURING A MOVE? Drape the piano with multiple blankets while still ON ITS LEGS. Secure the blankets with plastic wrap. Then place it on its side. Now you have a protected piano ready to be moved. Check out this photo of a properly wrapped piano. facebook.com/pg/jcc2c/posts/ On the positive side - they did remove the pedal lyre prior to moving.
removing the lid allows for a lighter piece to carry and maneuver ! secondly if you wrapped and shrink wrapped it while still standing you would never be able to remove the legs since they are flush with the edge , not sure how you are a second Gen mover , but if the hood pins were not removed and was wrapped how you suggested when the piano goes to the moving board it takes all of the weight of the piano and applies all the force to the two lid hinges which will definitely weaken and stress the screw holes and you have a greater possibility of permanently damaging the lid or hinges or causing a serious misalignment issue or even bending the hinge or breaking the hinge from the whole itself which would require serious restoration to the piano ... these gents did it flawlessly , take note when building and disassembly at a piano factory the same steps are exhumed.

You guys are obviously new. You don't use a damn wrench. You use a socket. You scratch paint with that wrench. And try using rubber bands and shrink wrap on every thing. It saves money and will not leave tape marks on furniture that you don't know how to cover up all the way. Oh yeah. Use ratchet straps instead of loading straps. They hold the weight. Good luck noobs
This is really not the proper way to do this. if done properly, one skilled mover can disassemble and wrap a grand piano by himself in five minutes, without speeding the video up. The first mistake was to remove the music desk, the second was to remove the lid. You are just increasing your risk of damage by doing so.
They need to invest in a side table to avoid working off the ground so much... It would also make the job more attractive to the next generation of Piano Movers

Your baby grand seems to be a lot lighter than mine. Trying to hold it up like your showing after removing one leg is asking for a herniated disk.
3 minutes to move, 3 weeks to remove all the tape used.
