Smart locks are kinda dumb

  • I spent many weeks working on finding out just how dumb smart locks are, and trust me, they're pretty dumb. You're honestly better off with an old fashioned Yale lock. But, if you insist on it...
Kwikset Bluetooth and NFC Lock ($222, the price has gone up since I wrote the script for this video):

MiLocks cheap in price and quality lock (could be used with better hardware for just the latch turn, maybe?):

Not sure I agree. I've got two Z-Wave smart locks that have been in use since 2019, which are great. They look like regular locks from the outside (with real keys!), they function normally from the inside as well, and they are very handy. I have the Z-Wave locks connected to my Home Assistant ZWave controller. This allows me to run automations that unlock the door based on phones arriving home and then motion in front of the doorbell/security cameras so 99% of the time I don't need to use my keys. I also have them set to lock automatically when both of mine and my wife's phone leave our home zone, this way we can just simply leave, and the doors are locked behind us. Easy.

Fair enough. There are exceptions to every rule, and primarily I think my concern is when a problem is being created for a solution to be used or when a solution only marginally solves a given problem. It sounds like you've improved your situation satisfactorily. I think it's a matter of me simply having different requirements and the value for cost for me isn't there. I could be wrong in the percentage of times that may be true, but I think I cover at least a reasonable subset of homeowners in my similar situation and perhaps with my taste--if I have any. I appreciate the thorough reply and I hope other viewers see it and consider it as well.

@@smartercircuits Yeah, it drives me crazy when the 'smart' solutions are more trouble, or a worse user experience than the older analog versions. All our switches are smart toggle switches, and everything in the house works as anyone would expect it to without smart stuff. Lots of extra quality of life improvement features for us that know the system (double tap actions on switches, etc).
I love not having to run around the house turning off lights when I leave. That was the main goal when I started into home automation.

I absolutely agree. Quality of life and peace of mind. Through almost our entire house we simply walk into a room and the lights come on. If it's late at night, they come on softer. Hopefully this spring I'll finish out all the motion and presence sensors. If I can get it working properly, I'm going to repurpose my low-voltage switch wiring to simply supply power for various other things. When our switch system was up (I had to take it down to do stuff to it), we used double taps in the bathrooms to tell the system we were taking a shower or bath and to leave the lights on even if movement in the room wasn't detected for a while. There are so many different techniques to these things it really is quite awesome.

I did install the Schlage Sense lock on my back door and It works every time with my watch. Only problem is there is no indication if it is already locked and passing the watch over it when it is unlocked, locks it. This problem occurs when you use the keypad as well. It has been a source of occasional frustration.
It works well with the HomeKit and can provide loaner key codes to guests.
I look forward to your thermostat video. I have a 3 zone system and have yet to find a satisfactory solution for control.
Currently I have LoRa sensors in every room with a central receiver to control and dish out heat.

I'll have to test drive that one. I'm also considering revisiting the drop bolt lock for a sliding door lock, but I still have ot wonder if I'm trying to invent a problem to solve.
I hope this next one is of use to you. I think the potential for multiple independent relay boards communicating with a central system could be done, or one central relay board with multiple remote sensors. I'll try to keep zone control in mind as I make the next one.

You forgot to mention being a responsible gun owner.

The primary reason I don't mention that sort of thing is the requirement to be present yourself (or a human at least, unless your doggo is less clumsy than mine with ordinance).

Valid point, I love the takes on your channel. You'll be big in no time.

Much appreciated. I'm glad you like it. I like gadgets and sometimes what I observe might be useful--or at least entertaining.

I really dont see much smart in "smart" anything. Sometimes analog is just plain and simple.

Agreed. There's making things easier through automation, then there's adding wifi functionality to a cheese grater.
      Thanks for the view!

Thanks! That's Ozymandias, he's a bit long in the tooth, but he's a good doggo.
