+Lovelorn88 Nick Yeah, same here. I gotta quit. My face has got thinner and even if I put on or lose weight, it stays the same. I wasn't sure if it was just aging, but after seeing this, I'm pretty convinced it's smoking...
DCJY - the1ross Yeah, I added age to my face. I smoked on and off but I think alcohol binges was worse for me, especially for my brain. Constantly forget shit everyday, it's a real hassle.
I'm on day 2 of Champix (to stop smoking) and I'm a woman so it may be different for me, but my face has also gotten very thin - I too thought it was just raging but now I'm not so sure. Smoking long term does turn you into a bit of a zombie! I'm just hoping I don't get fat (I'm really slim, so hopefully I won't.) People keep saying "smoking is so bad, being fat is better" and I completely disagree! Obesity is far worse, long-term, than the ill side effects of smoking for most people. Will see anyway, hopefully it'll improve my life and not fuck it over.
I will never forget the first time I played this game on TGCD. Oh my gosh the music so amazing! The emotion I felt because a musical known carried the moments of the game in ways I cannot describe. I actually used to listen to the music to do my homework in school that’s how much I loved it. The music alone with carry me away to a distant world in ways that no other music could. Thanks for sharing this mile stone in JRPG’s. I am devoted to your channel man. It’s nice to see people my age still having a passion for these games. Thank you!
I'm actually playing through the entire Ys series right now because of you, Johnny! I've completely fallen in love with these games, just incredible! Thanks for introducing me to such a great series.
Iv learned more from your videos about gaming then anything and anyone else you really confirmed for me what i wanna do in life and you just introduced me to so many games i cant thank you enough.
This game was so amazing back in the day, i'm still looking at youtube videos about it 25 years later. Pretty sure i watched this review a while ago too - nice review. You are right the music really makes this game such a joy to play. The boss music makes me wanna throw up the horns and start banging away. Edit: And the voice acting at the time had us going "WHOA, NO WAY!!!!". No it's not that great - but wow! Voice acting in a video game! The cut scene between book 1 and 2 was the ultimate - "Dude look what this system can do" moment for a group of video game playing friends.
VBshredder No! What are you talking about!? The voice acting was actually REALLY good, especially when compared to any of the cringy voice acting heard in games today! It sounded like a great anime from the 80s or early 90s (the only kind of good anime)!
Bro I’m so glad I came across your video! I spent like more than an hour grinding to get the katana blade and I just realize now that you actually have to equip it in order for it to work! I’m dying here! 🤣
Damn I didn't realize you've been on here for almost a decade and a half! You definitely mellowed out a bit over the years. Lol. Also my Turboduo has taken a beating over the years but still works flawlessly.
You have got me into so many good games Ys is one of those game series. When I first seen the thumbnail on this one I was like Happy Console Gamer that doesn’t even look like him then I heard your voice and I was like yep that’s him haha. This is an old one :)
Experiencing this game back then is one of the most memorable gaming moments. Was completely blown away with music, animation and voice acting that remains some of the best up until now.
My favorite RPG [including both Japanese and Western] series of all time :) Played all most all of them, and love playing them on my Vita. Which I can play Ys 1 and 2, Ys Oath in Felghana, Ys 6, Ys 7, and now Ys Memories of Celceta
Downloaded it on the Virtual Console this morning, really didn't expect to like it but decided to give it a go - fast forward 6 hours and I'm still glued to the TV, haven't even got dressed yet! I'm in big trouble when the missus gets home!
i think this and phantasy star II on genesis were the most fun me and my bud ever had playing an RPG. the music and cut scenes were mind blowing back then
I just got the CD ROM working with the Magic Engine emulator on OS X (using Daemon Tools Lite to mount the ISOs) and man, the music in Y's is AMAZING! You were not joking about how epic the tunes are! "Theme of Adoru" is just brilliant!
Just beat Book I last night, and it was pretty amazing. Combat was fun, had some surprisingly goo voice acting, and fantastic music. Some may think the cutscenes are dated, but I love that TurboDuo animation style.
Great review. I just downloaded it from the virtual console and man i love it. The first thing that caught my attention was the music. The guitar is shredding man. Amazing game.
Wow, I'm glad your Turbo CD add-on still works. Let me guess: It was made in Japan, right? Nowadays Microsoft and Sony subcontract the manufacturing process of their consoles to Chinese sweatshops, and it almost seems as though the consoles are designed to break down within a year or two of normal use. The last well-built system I saw was the Sega Dreamcast.
Hey man....I have to say, you're actually one of my favorite reviewers, lol. I like your style of reviewing games and you know what you're talking about.....something most "professional" reviewers lack.
I LOVE this episode!!! I've always wanted to play this ys book 1 & 2! This is the second best episode of "Happy Console Gamer" the first is the pilot phantasy star episode! Good work!!!!!
Ya, I would have said "Wise" too. Wish that girl would drop that orb. Soundtrack does sound nice, and the bumping into enemy style of fighting while simple looks more time effective than going into a versus screen.
What’s up Johnny? Going back a long way with this one! I’m trying to pick out a retro English translated jrpg when I am in surgery recovery soon. I just got an nes everdrive and am torn between Ys or FF3. You talk so high about why Ys stands out because of the music of the TG. But little less. I know you were just starting out but Wow the passion has always been there. How does the gameplay and story stand amongst all the other franchises? Out of all the nes/famicon rpgs which one satisfied your “need” the best? Thanks for all the years.
Great review as always, but you need to make a complete Ys series review. With all the Ys in the series. I think there are 6 or so of them and they are all awesome.
Ofcourse one of your old videos shows up when I look up Y's. My first experience was turboduo version, hands down my favorite rpg of the era it was above and beyond zelda or anything else to me, the music, the story, it's up there with ff7 as my top RPGs of all time.
I'm half way through playing the entire series, my goal is to play all the originals, then all the remakes, or atleast the ones that have remakes. I even went so far as to get the japan only PS2 remakes. All because of this video. Thank you
Ys... wow... its been to long. This was one of my first childhood sega adventure games back in the 80s. Despite me only playing it on the SMS system i still had an absolute ball with this game. I highly recommend this game to anyone that love these types of games. The fighting system might be very odd but its something that grows on you with time. I know i definitely found it really odd at first but the more i played the game the more i loved it!
I originally own a Turbo Duo when it first came out just to be able to play Y's. I ended up later selling the system and and all the games I had with it. Y's left me with such a great impression that two years ago I went and tracked down another Turbo Duo system and another Super CD version of Y's Book I & II again just so I could revisit this great game again!! I will not let it go this time. This game blew all other away during it's time when it was new. It still rocks!! Yes it's pronouced E's
I've never played the older versiosn of y's. However, I played the psp versions which are really great old school games. This is a great series and a must buy. Great music, good gfx, good great gameplay.
I remember getting the CD add-on just around the same time I started taking Japanese classes in junior college.. '89 I think. I remember one of the first things I learned in class was "katakana" and it clicked right away.. on the main title screen... イース! EESu OMG! I can read Japanese! And I know the correct way to say it! =P This time of my life will never be replicated.
The game is amazing, the music is amazing, and the story is amazing. The gameplay maybe simple but it works. You can stay hooked on it for a long time because of the game quality. If you haven't gotten it, then get it. The DS remake of it came out recently and I heard it is amazing as well.
I've watched several retro console reviews and many times the reviewer has mentioned that though the old console still works, their X Box 360 has already red ringed (sometimes multiple times). I guess the 360 is the standard comparison for console life spans because it has the shortest life. By the way, I have several classic consoles and they all still work, but my friend has already gone through two 360s.
The first ys' game I played was ys' 3 on the super nintendo. Then ys' 4 ark of napisth and then right after that I bought ys' chronicles book 1 & 2, oath in felghana, and finally ys' seven the most three resent games on the psp. They're all great games. I haven't beaten chronicles yet though.
Yes it is entirely possible, and you never know we might see solid state storage as the standard again someday. The prices do drop every year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed too. :)
Yo HCG, I got Ys Book 1 and 2 for the PC. I really like the game it's simple and fast pace kinda of hard but you can manage by grinding. My question is I want to continue the story of Ys, which is the best version of Ys 3? I heard nothing but good things about it I want to get the best version
I highly recommend it. If you can't get a game because of the price tag *cough* Snatcher *cough* then just get some blank cds and start burning some games (not literally). I also recommend Shining Force CD strongly.
Its an excellent Zelda-style action rpg. The story is actually a bit cooler then a typical kill-the-evil-demon story, because you're actually uncovering a mystery. Plus you are getting 2 games in one package. If you want to see why games have the music and cut scenes they have today, check it out. Its quite an experience, even today.
AMEN!!! LOL I broke my "sony tradition" when I bought my first Xbox and regretted it when it died on me....problem is, I wasn't willing to sell all my games (35-40 of them) to gamestop for like 30 bucks total, and then have to start a "New collection" ...Although I still have like 60 old games for ps2.... I wish Sega was still around!
I always called it EEs. I saw it as a preview on Gamepro TV and they called it that. Although recently, I've been pronouncing it Wise so people know what the heck I'm talking about when I ask for the game. It's bad, I know. Good video. Can anybody tell me what platform I should go for when playing these games, The DS remakes or the Virtual Console releases? I´ve never played any of the Ys games before even though I´m a fan of jrpg´s.

If book ii is the sequel, then why must I play through the first one to unlock the second?
Thumbs up if you came here after the smoking story
haha same. ^,_,^
I'm just hoping I don't get fat (I'm really slim, so hopefully I won't.)

Im here from the year 2020. Wow how time flies by. Thank you johnny for helping me get into the ys series.
I am soo happy to hear that! thats the reason I started the channel!

I just got my Turbo Grafx 16 mini - and I’m playing Y’s books I & II!
So glad you are feeling better Johnny!
I'm actually playing through the entire Ys series right now because of you, Johnny! I've completely fallen in love with these games, just incredible! Thanks for introducing me to such a great series.

I love watching the throwbacks idk why.
You are so right about the sound track. Great call.
Wow 13 years ago. Happy I subbed to your channel. Your love for gaming has me always watching your videos.

Thanks to your channel and Game Sack, I finally got into Ys.
Great video! This game is still one of my favourites after all these years.

This game was years ahead of its time. Zelda, action RPGs, and video game music in general owe a lot to this masterpiece.

Turbograxy version just amazing. The game come out 1989 and have neat full voiced and not digitalize 16 bit music. Its really breakthough though
Watching in 2022
damn..total transformation...
Ys was awesome. It is hated on by those who did not understand it. This game is immortal.

Younger Console Gamer had more bass in his voice 🚬🤔
YS ROCKSSSS!!!
:-)
Wouldn't you love it if they went back to cartridges too? I miss the days of "No load times"!
@MatticusFinch1820 I love my xbox 360 but I'll have to agree with you there. All my old systems work, I've gone through 3 of these damn things.
Its an excellent Zelda-style action rpg. The story is actually a bit cooler then a typical kill-the-evil-demon story, because you're actually uncovering a mystery. This was the first video i saw of yours
You could always get the Sega Genesis CDX. It's a Genesis and Sega CD in one. Sadly, you can't put a 32x on it.
I always called it EEs. I saw it as a preview on Gamepro TV and they called it that.
Although recently, I've been pronouncing it Wise so people know what the heck I'm talking about when I ask for the game. It's bad, I know. But I got sick of correcting video game store employees since I've been looking for the games.
He looks older here
Good video.
Can anybody tell me what platform I should go for when playing these games, The DS remakes or the Virtual Console releases?
I´ve never played any of the Ys games before even though I´m a fan of jrpg´s.
If that music I'm hearing in the game.. alright I guess I'll play it.
I know I'm late to the party, but I just got it a few days ago on Virtua Console. I'm into it! I tried out roms of the nes and sega masterstyem versions... and they're definitely not as good.
I've never played a Ys game. They look cool though.
I bought this game and beat the first Ys, but I sold my wii. Now after some time I've bought another wii, and not only do I have to rebuy this game since Nintendo doesn't allow transferring of titles I purchased to a new console (I'm still in contact with the person I sold the wii to, she doesn't even play most of the vc games), but I also have to play through the first book before I can play he second. If book ii is the sequel, then why must I play through the first one to unlock the second?
I've always called it wise, and will continue doing so. :)
i just bought Y's 1 and 2 Remastered on steam.
I like both the PC and PSP versions :) Now I can play Ys anywhere.
This version kind of socks, the Turbografx 16 (Wii Virtual Console) version is much better
+Diogo Farias i like socks. so that's fine with me.
yeah no voice acting is a real deal breaker in the new chronicles
HappyConsoleGamer, have you heard of Ancient Land of Ys for the PC?
