  • Eric shot a cow!! Instead of a bullet, though, he used a dart with medicine. We had a cow that got pink eye and was having a hard time seeing. We didn't want to stress her out more by trying to get her caught, loaded on a trailer and moved to our cattle working facility. We decided to use our Cap-Chur dart gun to shoot her and give her some medicine.

Not only are helping the cow, heifer, steer, bull or whatever, that's $$$ that are keeping the operation going. Every life counts on a farm/ranch.

Does your rifle have the low and high settings? Ever tried low, if so...would you recommend low setting in any situation? How accurate would you say your rifle is at say 20-30 yards? I ask because I just bought a similar rifle, but have not received it yet.

Seems to be a lot of pink eye problems this year as well as foot rot

Yes, this is two years in a row with a lot of pink eye for us. Luckily we haven't had much foot rot though.

How often do you move your herd to a new paddock that is lush forages at least 8 inches tall? Cows on well managed pastures are more resistant to pinkeye and hoofrot. See Gabe Brown, Allen Williams, Greg Judy, Ray Archuleta, Steve Kenyon, Joel Salatin, Teddy Gentry,... Polycultures supply more diverse nutrients to the herd.

Many of these have great info on youtube interviews or their own channels. Dirt to Soil, How to Think Like a Grazier, Pastured Poultry Profits, and Salad Bar Beef are all books that would help your soil microbes, plants, animals, and wallet to be healthier.

Those practices are all great but not applicable to all situations. Pink eye is rarely an issue for our herd. For some reason it has been an issue this year though.

I think you should move her real at home or you could take better care of her way she getting around is good she’s getting here the other cattle I think you do a lot better😢

What's your recommendation for taking better care of her?
Moving her and her calf to an unfamiliar location is just going to make it worse for her and it won't speed up the healing. We have done everything we can to prevent her from getting pink eye but nothing is 100%

They have made the very best decision possible in this situation. Attempting to move a cow who is afflicted with pink eye in both eyes is extremely dangerous to the handlers and could potentially cause a tragic or fatal injury to the animal. She could charge at people, she could bust through a corral, hit a water through and fall head in etc. Here, she is out in the open and will only run for a short distance until she senses it's safe enough. I have seen a bull flip himself backwards in a chute during medicating because he could not see. If not treated quickly, she will lose her eyes. Ever try to inject an uncooperative animal in a chute...it is very stressful to them...more so than a quick dart.
