I have to say thank you for an excellent vid, I have found four mineral wagons and a van in box I’ve had on the top shelf in my ‘office’ for years. Perfect timing!
Very useful video. I have been building a Palvan kit but didn't have my preferred 2p coins for weight. It has therefore cost me three 20p coins glued onto the floor !!!! Weight is essential for smooth running. Thanks for the video
When fitting brake levers on mine I put on dry with a little brass ring over the handle to form more detail. Always paint your parts first or weather them etc , good to weight them down too and I never use those couplings , all my models are fully fitted trains only problem is when I want to change the loco it’s a bit of a process with uncoupling needles I’ve made. I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to detail. But I love originality. I even put cargo plates on my wagons and sometimes old labels ripped in half as if been torn off etc ….eeeeee the joys of modelling
I just finished assembling one of these I bought before christmas. It took a while because I'd made a mistake and needed some plasticard to fix it. A dash of plasticard, some loose cardboard, and a couple of 2p coins, and my first-ever kit-built wagon is done (minus paint anyway). I've never felt so satisfied and it seems to run nicely on the track. I gave it a fair bit of weight, too!
I built some of these last year (review on my channel) and found that they're not bad kits. The only thing I noticed is that the coupling bar can be too rigid and cause derailments, coming up with a way of making them rotate slightly could help with going round corners
Parkside Dundas wagon kits are worth looking at as well. I have built loads of their vans and the detail is much better than the dapol. There is a wide variety of wagons too
I used to bang kits together like this when I was a child. I did soon learn to apply cement with a pin, though, rather than squeeze it on directly from the tube. Nowadays I use liquid poly applied with a brush. Just tape the parts together and run a small amount of liquid poly along the inside seam and let capillary action do the rest. It's much neater - and it ensures the parts fit together correctly before applying glue to them!
Thanks for inspiring...I’ve quite a few kits like these but all in the storage box....never seem to get enough time always doing other stuff on the layout.....
Ha ha. Tube cement! ;-) I remember struggling with that stuff many moons ago. As discussed in your previous video, with individual wagons coming in north of £10-£15, these kits are a great alternative. I will be giving them a try at some point - particularly as I like to model doors open where possible. Great video.
I would suggest fitting brass taper bearings in the axleboxes ( a very simple task ) to improve the free running & prevent the pin point axles wearing through the plastic
I don't know if you reply to old videos, but I must admit, I'm tempted to get the lowmac kits, however, I doubt I'll have a load on them all the time so I'm not sure if there will be enough weight to stop it derailing... Also on a sidenote, I'm seeing unpainted dapol wagons a pound cheaper than the prices of kits now, are they worth it? I'm worried it'll to be awkward painting the body without getting the frames covered in paint...
It might be possible to add weight under the body, but I'm not familiar with the lomac kit so couldn't say for sure. I think it would be pretty tricky to paint completed ones neatly, hope this helps
Possibly a stupid question but i have tried without much success to find out do you get any transfers in these Kits its not in my opinion just to paint and weather these models it's the little detail number and the weights descriptions in the corners or are they available else where
Mike, Do you "test fit" these parts , or are they that good to begin with? I have a couple of these down in the "dungeon". I thought I would try a bit of 009 even though i'm in the "land of left side drivers" and "cold beer drinkers" ,( and other annoying habits)
No I test fitted them first, although they were a pretty good fit. I would imagine that would cut down well to make 009. Another annoying habit is beating us at cricket, very bad manners!
I'm so confused!!!!!! The only crickets that I know of are locust like insects. Really Old Boy I do so wish that you would speak proper English when in the presence of we Colonials. It's only recent history since Rex Harrison taught us about the Rain in Spain etc and et al
They are good kits to build, same with the coaches kit that dapol sell not as good quality as the ready to run coaches but I think there like £12 a coach they don't look that bad after a bit of weathering, the way things are going with pricing people will start to turn to these kits as you said they are cost effective as you can get 2 wagons or coaches for the value of a ready to run wagon or coach, will look forward to next week's video on this getting painted... cheers Beeton hough junction (Dave C)
Budget Model Railways i have two of them coaches, at the time i bought them ready to run coaches were only £4/£5 more but now with them coaches being £45+ and plastic kit coaches being at £12 or there abouts you can get 3/4 coaches to the price of 1, I haven't been to dapol for awhile so the stock of them may have changed but yea not bad for the price when you give them a bit of weathering
If you have a 3d printer, or buy a cheap one, you could just print the pieces. I've seen bodies and chassis in 009 on thingiverse and they probably have them in HO/OO as well. If you wanted metal wheels, you could buy packs of wheels. Alternatively, you could print wheels out of black or gray pla.
Would have fitted some brass 'top hat' 2mm bearings. Use a 2.1 mm drill bit for the body of bearing and a 3.5mm bit to countersink the bearings rim so it is flush with back of the plastic.W iron.
as an australian modeling england it is very hard to get cheap wagons or even wagons at all there cheap on the website but the ruddig shipping is the only thing
Budget Model Railways Mostly curiosity. I'd have thought it'd be easier to paint without the wheels. I gather they come with metal wheels so no need to swap out old plastic ones (if you didnt have metal wheels to fit from the start)
I tried N, but found everything as, if not more, expensive even second hand I'm afraid. Also shunting does not work well which I enjoy. That's why I came up with the idea of the round and round layout in OO that's the same size as N gauge.
i get the building bit as its creative but for 6.00 pounds... hmm you can get a bunch of wagons perhaps 5 or 6 second hand on ebay which would be better for youre money.. just my view anyways.. still going to get one of these kits though lol :)
I've struggled to get wagons on eBay inc postage for much less than £2, I've done a video on wagons which only cost me .50p but I wanted to do a vid to help those who are not that fortunate. £6 is still a lot less than the £17 for a new RTR one
We are budget model railways so using a glue that costs more than the kit would kind of defeat the object, the ones I use work so that's all that matters
You used way to much glue for the roof. The ends, and 1/4 of each wall section needed glue to old up the roof and be sturdy. Of course I built 40ft and 50ft ho scale boxcars and the surface area is way larger.
I have to say thank you for an excellent vid, I have found four mineral wagons and a van in box I’ve had on the top shelf in my ‘office’ for years.

Thanks for the video
Ouch, that's the cost of living crisis for you lol. I use lead offcuts I got from a roofing company a few years back

It's very satisfying making your own wagons
I built some of these last year (review on my channel) and found that they're not bad kits. The only thing I noticed is that the coupling bar can be too rigid and cause derailments, coming up with a way of making them rotate slightly could help with going round corners

Airgun pellets are handy for adding weights, I used them a lot on N Gauge goods stock and it did improve the running and the coupling.
I might need to get one over the pond. Now a nice thing with weights is when they are disguised as freight or cargo inside!
Brilliant! You make kit building look very easy, which gives me confidence.
Thanks, that was the aim

Sadly the fumes make me ill!
I find the Revell applicator with the thin metal tube to be the most useful way of applying liquid poly

They are potentially a good option, wagons are so expensive now given you need six plus to make a decent looking consist
I’ve built about 3 of the “presflo” wagons by Dapol. They are fiddly but worth the money. Although I think there should be a pre-painted version.
@KP3 A kit is a pile o'parts that need assembly AND painting. (keeps us out of the liquor locker a bit longer)
I would suggest fitting brass taper bearings in the axleboxes ( a very simple task ) to improve the free running & prevent the pin point axles wearing through the plastic
I fill the bearings with vaselene. Some of my Airfix/Dapol kits are still running 30 years on after this treatment as good as the day I did them.
Nice video. Made some in the past only down side I found was couplings at the time metal did not stay put, otherwise very nice models.

@@BudgetModelRailways Muchly thank you
Nice wee kit, never done one before. Thanks for sharing........John.
Possibly a stupid question but i have tried without much success to find out do you get any transfers in these Kits its not in my opinion just to paint and weather these models it's the little detail number and the weights descriptions in the corners or are they available else where
Mine came with some transfers but not sure what they were of, possibly worth googling it
Good video! Just cuious, what paints would you need? does it tell you on the the instruction manual?
We will be covering painting it in next Tuesday's video
Budget Model Railways. You tease, you!
Mike, Do you "test fit" these parts , or are they that good to begin with? I have a couple of these down in the "dungeon". I thought I would try a bit of 009 even though i'm in the "land of left side drivers" and "cold beer drinkers" ,( and other annoying habits)

Ehhh......Mike....... ,what's cricket?
A game they beat us at
I'm so confused!!!!!! The only crickets that I know of are locust like insects. Really Old Boy I do so wish that you would speak proper English when in the presence of we Colonials. It's only recent history since Rex Harrison taught us about the Rain in Spain etc and et al
My apologies, I believe the correct term is dominians, or commonwealth rather than colonials.
Hi Mike, I had ruled out Dapol, but will look at them again, regards Kev
i think they look fantastic :) ty for the video
They are good kits to build, same with the coaches kit that dapol sell not as good quality as the ready to run coaches but I think there like £12 a coach they don't look that bad after a bit of weathering, the way things are going with pricing people will start to turn to these kits as you said they are cost effective as you can get 2 wagons or coaches for the value of a ready to run wagon or coach, will look forward to next week's video on this getting painted... cheers Beeton hough junction (Dave C)
I might have a look at the coaches, as you say with new ones £25+ they are a big saving
Great video - you've inspired me to do some!
Thanks, that was the aim of the video
How long does your poly cement take to dry ?
A while.
was that Dapol C042 OO Interfrigo Wagon Plastic Kit modeled on an actual wagon which ran on British rails?
Sorry, Not sure I'm not that up on my wagons. We tend to run whatever we like so it's not an issue for us
Yes it did as part of the international traffic into the UK with fresh produce from Italy and spain
nice video subscribed very helpful easy to understand
Thanks for subscribing Keith glad you liked it

It's something we are looking into, thanks
Buy decent wheels, 3d printed out of pla or something else you can't get the precision of a metal wheel .
Would have fitted some brass 'top hat' 2mm bearings. Use a 2.1 mm drill bit for the body of bearing and a 3.5mm bit to countersink the bearings rim so it is flush with back of the plastic.W iron.
It would kind of defeat the budget object to start buying tools and fittings
as an australian modeling england it is very hard to get cheap wagons or even wagons at all there cheap on the website but the ruddig shipping is the only thing
Its a shame , as its not actually that expensive to post these its to Australia, but of course retailers have set charges
On the other hand if any of our kits interest you our postage to Australia is very reasonable as our kits go in large letters
Good ideas for those who aren't near discount sources.
Thanks
looks great for a kit : )
It should look even better once it's painted , video on that out next week
Another good video.
Far better to paint main structures (underframe and body and roof) before final assembly !
Yes that's what I would do another time
Great video
For some reasons I just assumed that dapol didn’t do rolling stock and only locos 😅?
Out of interest, how easy is it to remove the wheels without damaging the model after assembly?
I'm guessing you could carefully prise them out, but curious as to why you would want to?
Budget Model Railways Mostly curiosity. I'd have thought it'd be easier to paint without the wheels. I gather they come with metal wheels so no need to swap out old plastic ones (if you didnt have metal wheels to fit from the start)
I see where you are coming from I should have painted the under neath parts before I assembled it, yes they are metal wheels now
Cheaper is good!
Nice tutorial, are we going to see how to paint them?😀
Next Friday hopefully
Thanks, I struggle to paint them smoothly so that will be useful
Sorry meant next Tuesday!
Looking forward to that .Painting is truly the weakest of all my many weak points
We are working on it this weekend
On the picture off the wagons the doors open? Can this not be done?
Of course if you want to
Great video thanks, would you ever consider n gauge, cheaper wagons and second hand accessories, trains, bigger scenery possibilities,
I tried N, but found everything as, if not more, expensive even second hand I'm afraid. Also shunting does not work well which I enjoy. That's why I came up with the idea of the round and round layout in OO that's the same size as N gauge.

Mark's Models are selling dapol kits for a reasonable price €7-€9
there are a lot of better glues to use than what you show here.
We are budget model railways so using a glue that costs more than the kit would kind of defeat the object, the ones I use work so that's all that matters
