@@christiansmith9321car insurance, Maintenance, and repairs will be expensive, That’s why its cheap. Buy a toyota lexus or a ford, They last longer and cheap to maintain
I've had a 2017 2.0 litre diesel XE for two and a half years now. Used daily. Because of the Ad Blue it is exempt from ULEZ in London. I get average 35 mpg for short, around town journeys and 64+ mpg on motorways. I love the handling but when using recommended tyre pressure, occasionally get rear tyre spin when starting from stopped. Cured by deflating by 2 psi. Keeping to recommended service and oil change keeps is keeping it in good shape. Only minor issue is paintwork easily scratches on boot bumper shelf. (Should have bought one with metallic paintwork). One thing I must do is update the SatNav software as the city council, like a lot of others has introduced new No Entries, Bus Gates and Pedestrianized areas. Mileage is currently only 74K so will probably keep this one for another year or two. No way will I be going EV!!
Owned mine 7 years ago- change oil every 12 months with the Jaguar spec oil - not one breakdown - only maintenance issues were an ABS sensor and wishbone arms - has 55k on the clock - running better than ever - was a Jaguar car at Coventry for first 12 months of life - I believe it probably had a tough time then - 2016 R Sport
Is it a diesel? Looking at a 2020 diesel 180 with 54 thousand miles
All the above examples of reliability are low milage examples.
@@Edvard.MunchkinYes - but you need to get one that has had regular oil changes - 20k between oil changes is just too long - mine sounds sweat - if they are noisy then it’s had a hard life etc

Had one since 2 years . Built 11/2015.. had the timing chain, dpf full, rear camera failure, oil pressure sensor and abs sensor. All that before 90000km.
What happend when the timing chain failed ? Did you get it repaired and if so how much did that set you back ? £

Here in the uk Jaguar dealership it’s about £10,000 if the timing chain snaps

@@Sevenseas0 “If it snaps” yes. Most get changed before that point because they generally get noisy.
from what i read yes the timing chain issues. also the fuel line rail leak and other lines where coming loose. but seems like electrical etc is all ok

I’ve had an xe for 5 years now have the 20d and had no problems. I use Castrol oil and change it every year, think a lot of it is the maitainance schedules need to be shorter.

New catalytic conveter, 5 engine mounts, 8 batteries, new boot lid, all new external lights but since all fixed under warranty, been a top notch car, had it 7 years now

Have my 2016 2.0 TDI now 4 years only serious issue cracked cast iron exhaust manifold - apparently not uncommon according to the D Jag dealer - supplier issue? 4.9L/100Km on long runs and one Tank of fuel D-U.K an underated vehicle and with AWD Extremely good in the snow
Reading and listening to everything about Jaguar XE it seems that if I buy the new one, change oils at least 1x to 2x per year (as I do with my current VW golf), I should be able to have no problems up until 70-80k kilometers. Then it might be a good idea to change the chain and check turbo just for a good measure of safety and long term care. From there on I could push the vehicle up to 150k kilometers before repeating this. And maybe even reach over 230k kilometers before having any "more expensive" repairs or replacements (5000 € or higher repair).

You are correct but always be prepared for the unexpected.
That's coreect. Especially the 2.0 litre diesel, jaguar got too carried away telling people not to change oil in over 20k miles, then using chain and guides that require good oil..
This set them up to fail.
And this is the problem now, new drivers then wouldn't service them frequently because dealerships would say they aren't due, only to have premature failure.
Iv had to get a new engine. Car was at 70k when I got it and it only had 3 services imagine
The turbo is just like any other turbo and if the driver observes a 30 second idle before stopping the engine for it to cool down and switch the stop/start system off while driving, the turbo should last the whole car’s life or indeed in old age might be a reason to scrap the car. Sticky waste gates or variable vanes can be an issue, along with actuators, but a skilled mechanic would not usually remove and replace a turbo for such a repair.

I ended up needing new injector seals in the diesel version, and had 2 garages refuse including a diesel specialist, and the jaguar main dealer not having the part, before I was lucky enough to find a rural garage that replaced the lot quite affordably. I then found out the car was having nox sensor issues which would be about the cost of another few annual services, so I sold it to a local garage in the end.
I still desperately miss it though. I'd buy one tomorrow if I didn't think it would blow up on the driveway from all my short bumpy journerys.
These cars break down so often that has caused a shortage of parts in most main dealers. It’s a shame otherwise amazing cars to drive.
If petrol an option for you they’re more reliable
How much did it cost to replace injectors seals?
@@TheTechAudiophile about £160, but that was a very lucky case of just being charged for labour. I think it was 400-600 from the dealer. About 750 quoted for the nox sensor needed at the same time, but I sold it to the garage before changing it.
JLR and Ford have very poor replacement parts availability due to cost cutting and reluctance to stock. They are not alone. Try getting a turbo for a Ssangyong diesel engine. You might die of old age first.
If its the same as an xf then every single part will fail , mine has actually given me nightmares its that bad
Anything from 2019 onwards has the up graded timing chain and ur gear selector from the face lift models are now the same as the f type no more dial to select ur gears
Which goes to prove that the video accusing driver’s poor servicing is piddle.
@@hedydd2 not really as I had a 2016 with 130k miles on original chain and had no engine issues but that being said every car that has a chain has a failure rate look at the mini n18 that was a common issue where chain guides and chain failed to the point the issued an upgraded chain kit and mini never took responsibility so it happens to other brands as well if memory serves me right bmw was on watch dog for there chain meant years ago due to it failing and how difficult it was to replace due to it being up against the fire wall off the engine bay
@@davidmaguire5510 Wasn’t the 2016 a Ford 2.2 engine? The Ford had no common issue with timing chains. Up until mid 2016, I believe that either engine was to be found on new cars in dealer stock.
@@hedydd2 no ford engine was ever in the xe hence no 2.2 versions all 2 litter unless u went for the petrol version where u had the v6 which was a v8 with 2 cylinders capped off to create the v6 as the bottom end was the same in the v8 just without the cap
@@davidmaguire5510 I’ve read up on the model and you are quite correct. I wonder why sales of the model were so disastrously low? They peaked in the second year at only the low forty thousands. Could it be due to JLR’s poor reliability reputation?
I am extremely careful with maintenance. I change oil every 15.000 km. Liqimoly 0w30 with the jaguar specs. I wait for tree or four minutes to cool down the turbo and also drive carefully until the engine raises temperature. Turbo broken suddenly and 1.600 euros repair. I have had many brands un my life, BMW, Volvo, Nissan, Volkswagen, and NEVER broke a turbo.
I would suggest to service every 10000km. But generally Jaguar are built like biscuits 🍪 easy to break
That’s unfortunate. I’m the same as you but did replace a worn turbo on a heavy duty air-cooled industrial six cylinder once while changing a broken manifold. It had been making loud whooshing noises when decelerating suddenly off a load for a while and I didn’t consider it worthwhile reinstalling it. The new turbo cost £1200 but the two piece simple cast exhaust manifold cost over £2000, all plus VAT.

No. Very little city driving. Mostly highways.

The timing chain issue is only on diesels not petrols and was fixed for diesels around 2018 iirc with a better timing chain
Only problem with Jaguars are when you send them in for service the oil never gets changed which results in the engine issues
I do believe that. My XE v6 is 9 years old now, and for its first oil change under my ownership, I took it to a specialist. They came to get me when I was waiting, and showed me the oil that had came out. It was jet black and stank. He said he didn't think it had been changed in at least 20k. All previous services were dealer stamped. With the most recent one being only 6k miles previous. I have all the old servicing invoices that the previous owner paid, at great expense.
Anyway, that aside, I've had no issues with it in the couple of years I've had it. And being the supercharged v6 version, it's quite fun too. I felt it was a risk buying a Jag, but I have to say, so far it has been flawless and I have no plans to change it.

I had 1 for 2 years. Engine failed and sold for parts…. Everyone who I know told me jaguars are unreliable…. I learned the hard way… did I maintained my car? Yes full service at jag and I changed oil every 10 month ….. had 75k on a clock.

D204 180 hp 2l diesel
Did u buy new or used?
Was 55k on a clock second hand

Thank you for the informative video. I have a 2015 xe. As i am posting this i am changing the timing change with the help of a friend. It sits at 144.000km but the ticking noice started around 130. I always use castrol oil, and i change it 2 times a year even though i only drive 10k a year. I believe this is why it lasted so long before becoming critical. I heard some snapped around 90k. I didnt know the service history when i bought it oversea at 118.000km. Its the only real problem i had with this car over the 2 years i owned it. The thing i hate most about this car is the jerky transmission accompanied by a lag when accelerating. Is this normal is there something i can do to improve it?
The transmission is usually smooth and responsive. Have you replaced the trany fluid? If not, give the trany a service whilst you working on it.

possible option: XHP tune for your gearbox, its even smoother shifting (in adition to oil change)
The transmission is an electronically controlled unit that should ‘learn’ or calibrate itself during driving. There should be a way of resetting it to factory default and letting it re-learn as you drive it smoothly, so that it changes smoothly. This is a ZF 9 speed unit, the same as I have on a 2015 Honda CR-V and I changed its oil at 50,000 miles and it is now coming up to 100,000 and changes like new, nice and smoothly.
Change the oil, change the oil, change the oil. See "I do cars".

Don’t know why JLR vehicles, from the cheapest to the £150,000+ Range Rover, are so palpably unreliable and continue to be so from one generation to the next. Having bought many of their products from Defenders to Range Rovers and a Jaguar XK8 over the years, they just do not improve. I believe it is due to an arrogant company ethos that as far as mechanical design life goes, they have a ‘that will do’ attitude.
Jag tends to follow BMW in most things including problems.
My XE was in about 10 times in 12 months for appalling build quality issues.
Sold it and got a Volvo V60 instead which was a much more luxurious car.
