That fact about ROB's 1st and 2nd alts changing between different languages is interesting. This has me wondering though, if you play as one of these alts online with someone who has a different language set, do they see a different alt from the one you picked?
I think in Brawl, where he was introduced, when not set to Japanese, he would default to the second costume. Because Brawl didn't have a list of costumes like Ultimate, this was fine, since this just made it appear that the Famicom costume is just last. This also ensures that you still see the correct costume online. But Ultimate apparently changed this. Probably because you can now see the costume list. So if it started at 2, it would be weird. So they apparently didn't change the order to 2 1 3 4 ... which would make sense, instead they changed the texture so the Famicom texture was replaced with the NES texture, and vice versa. There is at least one other character where the texture changes based on language, so they already have this support. Does make online weird if you use costume 1 or 2.
I guess they could’ve used Figure 8 Circuit as the background for R.O.B.’s official webpage, since he _was_ a playable character in Mario Kart DS for some reason, but I guess that’s still a bit of a stretch.
when you were talking about the electric effect, you actually showed the paralysis effect. This effect is different to the electric effect (notably used by most of Pikachu’s normals, Ganon’s dair, and Samus’s charge shot). the main difference is the amount of hitlag given by the moves, with paralysis doing more
Dedede's damage effect may be just to make the it sound like you're actually being hit by a wodden hammer, just like how Fire/Electric damage effects have their own sound. It's labelled "Dedede" because that damage effect wouldn't be used anywhere else other than the character in question.
@@Sawcybui Yes but no. Hitboxes each have a specified sound effect that determines what sound they make, which is different from a hit effect... Toon Link's for example is still just regular "cutting" effect, but with unique sound effects. Dedede's is an actual separate effect (like fire, electric, etc) that just functions identical to regular default hitting effect (I'm unsure if the sound effect is directly tied to that or not).
Something I noticed is that Lucas’s PSI in his own trailer and artwork is pink but in the game it became cyan. This is probably because they wanted to differ Ness and Lucas more since Ness also has pink PSI. Though it’d be more loyal to the games if Ness’s PSI was Red, Blue and Yellow, while Lucas’s PSI was Cyan and Pink.
About the thing where King Dedede’s title is omitted-the title of King is kind of a misnomer. While I haven’t played a Kirby game myself, a lot of content creators I follow do, and several lore tidbits mention how he’s a self-proclaimed ruler, and gave himself the title.
It should be noted that with the past few games he's been progressively EARNING that title, he's basically gone through a bit of a Vegeta villain to hero arc.
@@Cri_Jackal Dedede has pretty much been a hero since the second installment (albeit a bit misguided since breaking the star rod didn't solve the nightmare issue) Any form of antagonization past the first game was either a misunderstanding, an organized battle that kirby agreed to, or he was possessed by some evil force. Aside form those times it's common for him to actively help kirby. This isn't a "recent" development.
@@masonjones7777 dedede isn't really seen as a hero since adventure, he is depicted as self centered pompus, and childish but caring alot about others because he wants to impress those around him and earn their respect. The reason solarbeam, fire blast, and hydro pump is specifically because those were the strongest moves of the starter types in gen 1. I believe Sakura even pointed it out. Changing squirtle’s move to whirlpool would break the pattern and wouldn’t make sense at all, so it clearly is not changed and the in game move list wasn’t wrong, it just was updated goalless in a way that coincidently resembles whirlpool
The "damage effect" refers to VFX, not SFX, though. Most attacks in the game have a unique sound effect despite the actual effect being the same, so I'm not sure that's the case here
I have no idea if its been patched since then, but i remember lucario's extreme speed (up-special) used to ignore the ledge grab limit and just allowed you to keep grabbing the ledge.
(3:30) About the stick, considering how many animations are bugged with this new mirrored look, it appears that they have left and right facing animations, where he actually uses the left and right hand. So I assume he actually have a stick in both his left and right hand, that becomes visible and invisible at specific moments. Then they forgot to make the other stick shrink down when they copied over the animation.
I remember someone already said this that ''the reason Dedede has a seperate effect is to highlight the honour that is to be hit by the great King Dedede''
(8:30) Probably because "Dedede" is pronounced differently. In English it's "dee-dee-dee" and in Japanese it's "day-day-day". The two Chinese versions probably represents mainland China where they likely say "dee-dee-dee" and the second being Taiwan where they likely say "day-day-day". But they didn't bother having the announcer making a third recording for Taiwanese Chinese. Also, same characters can be pronounced differently in different regions; example of how "can't", "bath", "fast", "class" are pronounced differently in different English speaking regions, but still spelt the same.
The Wiki "confirms" that this is the case, Xander only recorded lines for English, Japanese and Korean, while both Chinese versions are using what's available instead of getting custom recordings as well.
The bit about ROB's move names is probably the fact that every character's moves are those names in the code, but his moves's official names are just the game's code on display. Side3/S3 is the name for Forward tilt for every character behind the scenes
My theory for the dedede effect is that the updated normal effect for ultimate looked off during his hammer attacks, and instead of manually adjusting the code to make it work, they just added a new effect to streamline the process.
The Dedede effect seems to include the sound of his hammer landing a hit and the motion blur of the hammer swing (which is usually white for soft swings [jab] and yellow for hard swings [Smash attacks]). I wouldn't be surprised if a small star appeared akin to Kirby landing on the ground.
Im pretty sure the reason Dedede has a completely different effect is for when he reflects a reflected gordo, because when this happens it has a completely unique animation, different from just hitting it back.
The Dedede effect might be how the character being attacked snaps to a position in the hammer's arc. For example, forward smash tends to snap the victim in front of Dedede. (This is my guess and it might be completely wrong.)
Na, that information depends on other things like knockback angle, whether it's weight-dependent or autolink, etc. Effects only affect vfx, sfx, hitstun and interactions like Pikmin being immune to it or Spirit buffs.
I might be incorrect, but I’m fairly certain that DeDeDe’s hammer attacks play a unique sound when hitting an opponent. As this sound is specific to DeDeDe, it might relate to his effect.
Traditional Mandarin is the primary form in Taiwan, whereas mainland China uses simplified. Taiwan was once under Japanese rule during Japan's imperialistic phase, so there are still people in Taiwan who can speak Japanese (mostly old people, I believe). This may be the reason they chose to give the Japanese pronunciation to Dedede. Not 100% sure why they stuck with "King Dedede" for simplified, though.
Last time I'm gonna say this but another fact about Sonic that isn't in the wiki is the fact that Sonic is the only character who doesn't slam into the wall when running into one instead he does a backflip off of it
9:00 dedede is a "self proclaimed" king, so in smash, sakurai (who also created and voiced him), completely dddisrespects the character by not giving him his fictional title. As if "Great king" is only in dedede's imagination 😂
With King Dedede losing the "King" part in Japanese, I forget exactly when he mentioned it but I remember in one of the directs/presentations Mr. Sakurai mentioning specifically with Isabelle as the example that they often left off honourifics in their character names, with Isabelle usually being referred to as Shizue-san in Japanese but in Smash she's just Shizue. K. Rool is an exception to this, probably because (phonetically) "King Cruel" is much more his name than just "Cruel."
After Pokémon unite, it's confirmed that Pokémon learn to use a move and use it as they learnt it, so this means that every Pokémon has it's own unique interpretation of the moves, i.e, in Pokémon Unite there're 4 water Pokémon that use Surf (Blastoise, Greninja, Slowbro and Cramorant) and every surf is different
Fun fact Snake has a specific animation when you let his Grenade blow up next to him while he’s idle. It doesn’t happen with any other bomb in the game just his own
If I had to take a guess as to why dedede's hammer has its own dedicated effect, I'm betting on it being a remnant of Brawl's coding likely using it for different sounds, since most characters in that game had the exact same sounds for hitting people, including swordies having the same slash effects. Sm4sh was slightly built off of Brawl, namely with animations, pre built physics that would later be modified and such, and Ultimate is Near Directly built on Sm4sh. So this is likely a small forgotten remnant of old codding work arounds that technically aren't necessary anymore. For example, Meta Knight, Pit, and Charizard still have code for the old Brawl glide behavior, despite no longer having such moves, and Ridley has code for it too, but no animation. Steve's elytra glide is likely built of it as well, give or take some modifications to make it a bit less busted. (Aside from the initial firework, he can't really gain too much height of it, and will fall like a brick if he stalls too long with it)
Fun fact: King Dedede in the E3 showcase, they show him crouching but it looks like it was ported from Sm4sh due to the eyes just staring into your soul, but we all know when Dedede crouch now it's just too perfect.
PJiggles has done an in depth video talking about differences in languages, I recommend checking it out! Except it wasn't just English and Japanese, it was all the languages.
Yeah! I thought about that video when thinking of the concept. I figured I might be able to go even more in depth given my background in Japanese and making a video dedicated specifically around that one language :)
One thing I'm sad you didn't mention about Sakurai's UA-cam channel is how he actually isn't monetizing it at all. He still needs to hire video editors, translators, etc., so he'll be losing money; but he says it's better in the hands of people who need it. What a legend.
This may be just my sonic knowledge but, while lots of Sonics moves are from Sonic the Fighters, there may be another one. Sonic’s forward air (the one where he spins forwards not in a ball) may be the Emerald Dive move from Sonic the Fighters. Sonic, metal sonic, and super sonic know the move.
i noticed something that's related to the ROB color fact. I'm pretty sure that NO spirit battle in the entire game uses a character's default color. I noticed that a lot of them didn't use the default color even though it would've been more accurate to the spirit than what they chose, but it's a way of reinforcing that you're fighting copies, not the originals. it seems like the Smash devs kept that in mind when making the Iron Golem spirit battle, surprisingly. needless to say the difference is because ROB's default color is different depending on the region.
For Dedede's effect, I think its because he has this unique sound effect when he attcks with his hammer, and the sound effects are probably linked to the visuals effect in some way.(this is speculation i'm not a tech genius so i dont know how it actually works)
A second reason that i'd say squirtle uses whirlpool, is that getting hit only by it draws you in to the the rest of the final smash, kind of like how whirlpool locks you from switching out your pokemon. Plus it just straight up looks like a whirlpool
Funny how Lucas reuses Ness' old idle animation when holding a small item in Smash 4 and Ultimate despite having a unique animation for this case in Brawl. Same goes for his "No Contest" clapping animation.
(10:00) It would be nice to also show differences between UK and US English, and also between more languages. You probably have plenty of people willing to help out.
The Rob thing is very interesting to me because in the villager and iron golem battle, the purely grey nes Rob is obviously what it’s meant to be as Iron Golems are well solid grey. I wonder if any other spirit battles have this issue
Something you might not know about: When you get ko'd in the Wuhu Island Volcano, smoke will appear from the volcano. Snake's remote missile (side b) will indicate how much time he has left to control it, as well as how far it is from him. If it's far from him, the missile launcher will glow yellow-orange. If it's close to Snake, the missile launcher will be green. I never knew these
I believe the dedede effect changes the sound effect of hitting someone, since dedede's hammer attacks make a much higher pitched noise than his body attacks
Here’s a very interesting fact about Olimar and Alph. Due to Olimar not having his eyes open, he’s not programmed to have a blinking animation, just two states, closed eyes normally and opened eyes when hurt. Since Alph’s eyes are open by default, this is reverse, so he closes his eyes while hurt. However, this means that Alph does not have a blinking animation. Yeah if you pay attention, Alph never blinks.
It makes sense that Squirtle would use Whirpool, since it's a trapping move. Like he's just trapping the opponent in the Final Smash while the other 2 deal all the damage.
My mains have rotated between Kirby and bowser and briefly meta knight, but it took 2 character analysis and this vid to convince me to main DeDeDe! “PREPARE TO BE DEDEDESTROYED!”
Another fun fact about dedede that kinda got shown when the voice actors for different languages said his name, the actual pronunciation for his name is, in fact, day-day-day (dā·dā·dā). If you want more clarification, ask PJiggles.
I personally think the Dedede effect has something to do with the sound effect that sometimes plays when you hit a heavy hammer attack. I’ve always noticed it and found it really satisfying, but never knew what caused it. This may be it.
I think squirtle is using hydro pump because pairing hydro pump with solar beam and fire blast makes much more sense since they’re all powerful attacks, whirlpool isn’t.

That fact about ROB's 1st and 2nd alts changing between different languages is interesting. This has me wondering though, if you play as one of these alts online with someone who has a different language set, do they see a different alt from the one you picked?
Yes
He is literally present at all times in the F-zero GX stage "Port Town Aero Dive" in the background, so they could have used that one too.
They should have made ROB's webpage background Gamer. After all, that's where you'd expect a toy to be: in a huge Nintendo fanboy's room.
when you were talking about the electric effect, you actually showed the paralysis effect. This effect is different to the electric effect (notably used by most of Pikachu’s normals, Ganon’s dair, and Samus’s charge shot). the main difference is the amount of hitlag given by the moves, with paralysis doing more
Dedede got an effect named after himself what an absolute CHAD
Dedede's damage effect may be just to make the it sound like you're actually being hit by a wodden hammer, just like how Fire/Electric damage effects have their own sound. It's labelled "Dedede" because that damage effect wouldn't be used anywhere else other than the character in question.
Like clouds buster sword, or toon links sword, or the fighting game characters' unique sound effects
@@Cri_Jackal Dedede has pretty much been a hero since the second installment (albeit a bit misguided since breaking the star rod didn't solve the nightmare issue)
Any form of antagonization past the first game was either a misunderstanding, an organized battle that kirby agreed to, or he was possessed by some evil force.
Aside form those times it's common for him to actively help kirby. This isn't a "recent" development.
@@masonjones7777 dedede isn't really seen as a hero since adventure, he is depicted as self centered pompus, and childish but caring alot about others because he wants to impress those around him and earn their respect.
He is more interested in doing stuff for himself even if good for others his actions are often based on keeping up to a standerd of his appearance to others.
Basically he is morally neutral but has friends who are more morally positive that he follows.
@@Cri_Jackal He never struck me as evil. Greedy, yes, but he still feels like a normal element of the cutesy world, like if he was better at sharing he wouldn't even be an antagonist. Though his power as "king" seems to tempt a lot of dark forces into him, Dedede himself isn't the evil here
I'm actually cackling at the royal match sponsor. I see that ad on UA-cam all the time and it really doesn't look like something people would download. Never knew they did sponsors, but all the power (and money) to you PKBeats
Dedede's hammer attacks have a custom sound effect. I'm pretty sure this is the only purpose of the Dedede effect.
The "damage effect" refers to VFX, not SFX, though. Most attacks in the game have a unique sound effect despite the actual effect being the same, so I'm not sure that's the case here
@@Casual_PKBeats Oh okay. In that case I have no idea what it's for.
I remember someone already said this that ''the reason Dedede has a seperate effect is to highlight the honour that is to be hit by the great King Dedede''
and that person is absolutely correct.
I thought it was just because of the unique sound effect
Living Room would be a perfect for the R.O.B. background.
yeah, the Dedede effect is definitely an audio thing. Y'know that unique thud sound when the hammer connects.
Dedede’s effect is incredible.
Squirtle's up smash is also totally Hydro Pump and that looks pretty different than Greninja's and the other hydro pumps
Not aqua jet?
@@vyor8837 Aqua Jet is a contact move, while Squirtle's up smash shoots 2 disjointed jets of water.
@@givecamichips thought you said up special, not smash. My bad.
@@vyor8837 No problem, but for the record I'm pretty sure Squirtle's up B is Waterfall
This is one of my favorite smash series, I love the dumb stuff!
Olimar can not breathe oxygen. It is stated in Pikmin that the planets gases are deadly to his kind.
I'm pretty sure it's literally just for the custom sound effect.
@@Kirbman Sound effects are different from visual effects. Thousands of attacks have the normal effect yet sound different.
@@theotherjared9824 Yeah, PKBeats told me in a different comment. I have no idea why they made the effect.
There is a star
11:21 Ok you caught me off guard
At the end you'll get ROBed
bro didnt have to violate lucario like that😭😭😭
Im pretty sure the reason Dedede has a completely different effect is for when he reflects a reflected gordo, because when this happens it has a completely unique animation, different from just hitting it back.
As a kirby fan who also watched the anime subbed, I can confirm king/daiyo is just a title, and not his name
They shoulda given Rob the Nintendogs background, without the dogs, so it's just... a living room.
I like your choice of background music.
It's King k rool not cruel.
@@wetube6513 I believe his name in the Japanese version is still spelled "King K. Rool" but phonetically pronounced "King Cruel."
(Aside from the initial firework, he can't really gain too much height of it, and will fall like a brick if he stalls too long with it)
Hey did you know that you can footstool dedede multiple times when he is in the super armpit part of his up b
Fun fact: King Dedede in the E3 showcase, they show him crouching but it looks like it was ported from Sm4sh due to the eyes just staring into your soul, but we all know when Dedede crouch now it's just too perfect.
The dark blue fur with the vivid green looks great on Sonic in my opinion
2:15 I just got a wave of nostalgia from that background music
You can also see Olimar’s helmet clip out of his head when Incineroar uses his final smash
Mfw ROB in this game is literally a fighting game character: his moves are just called by how they're inputted.
@@Casual_PKBeats Okay, that seems exciting.
Another amazing video
It would make sense for ROB's background to be Wrecking Crew, because when he challenges the player in-game, that's the stage used.
"Speaking of things" has me laughing every time
(6:45) If only there was a way to make voices and sound effects easier to hear ...
Dedede's got that Sakurai build, of course he's got his own effect
Funny how Lucas reuses Ness' old idle animation when holding a small item in Smash 4 and Ultimate despite having a unique animation for this case in Brawl. Same goes for his "No Contest" clapping animation.
(10:00) It would be nice to also show differences between UK and US English, and also between more languages. You probably have plenty of people willing to help out.
So, when Lucas whips out his stick, it's big and hard. After he finishes it rapidly shrinks in his hand.
The Rob thing is very interesting to me because in the villager and iron golem battle, the purely grey nes Rob is obviously what it’s meant to be as Iron Golems are well solid grey. I wonder if any other spirit battles have this issue
I Want The Smash Facts Back 😭
Something you might not know about:
When you get ko'd in the Wuhu Island Volcano, smoke will appear from the volcano.
Snake's remote missile (side b) will indicate how much time he has left to control it, as well as how far it is from him. If it's far from him, the missile launcher will glow yellow-orange. If it's close to Snake, the missile launcher will be green.
I never knew these
*FUCKING LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*
Bruh, I can't believe you just treated my man Lucario like that!
I think Squirtle IS using hydro pump but is just swirling it around to make a whirlpool, which is probably how they DO learn it
Maybe Dedede has a unique attack effect to use the unique sound effects the hammer has?
They should've gave R.O.B. a subspace themed background, since he debuted as a Smash character in Brawl's story mode.
It makes sense that Squirtle would use Whirpool, since it's a trapping move. Like he's just trapping the opponent in the Final Smash while the other 2 deal all the damage.
I don't know if its been covered but joker grappling hook is a projectile. I reflected it with King k. Rool on battlefield top platform.
My mains have rotated between Kirby and bowser and briefly meta knight, but it took 2 character analysis and this vid to convince me to main DeDeDe!
“PREPARE TO BE DEDEDESTROYED!”
just checked my smash 3ds, Lucas does have the same idle as ness when he's holdinf an item
Love these videos man, keep it up
You said PT's tip could be a carry over from Brawl, but I'm pretty sure there were no tips in that game.
I think he means that the tip in Ultimate was carried over using info from the Triple Finish trophy in Brawl.
Squirtle is definitely using whirlpool cause it drags opponents in and traps them in the final smash kinda like in games and anime.
not sure, but dedede might be for the sound effect his hammor makes when he hits you.
I think squirtle is using hydro pump because pairing hydro pump with solar beam and fire blast makes much more sense since they’re all powerful attacks, whirlpool isn’t.
10:10 what a coincidence, channel Hanasaku just made a showcase of these different effects
And in it he says the hit effects include both sounds and visuals
Thanks for the video :)
Zombie doesn’t have eyes
8:59 The thing with dedede in japan is that he's actually a self proclaimed king, not actually a king.
8:20 How strange that Pythra, or Homura/Hikari outside of English, changes from Pyra (Mythra) and Pyra/Mythra between Chinese and Japanese, even changing the cropping of their icon on the character selection screen
Please refrain from investigating my stick any further. Thank you.
Oh my god ... this whole section about Lucas' stick is cracking me up lol
My brother and I often talk about HOW DUMB IT IS SEEING HIS STICK JUST LINGER IN HIS HAND SOMETIMES
Now, I'm learning all kinds of extra dumb stuff about Lucas' stick LOL
