The Bulldog Choke In MMA - Analysis of a Catch Wrestling Classic

  • The Bulldog choke is a rare catch wrestling submission that was used by Ben Askren to get a win over Robbie Lawler. The Bulldog Choke has been used multiple times before in the UFC and in this video I breakdown how and why it can work.
    In the UFC it has been used by Carlos Newton to submit Pat Miletich, Chris Lytle used it to submit Tiki Ghosn, Tim Elliot used it to win a fight on the ultimate fighter and Raquel Pennington and Uriah Faber both won with Bulldog chokes on the same evening.
    It is essentially a mix between a headlock and an RNC and If an attempt at a bulldog choke is available then it means the attacker is forgoing the opportunity to insert back hooks in to establish a more secure position to complete the choke from.

    Even though Askren is just now part of the UFC, it's no secret Dana White has a long history of hating on him. The Lawler matchup was on purpose since he's a brawler. White wanted Askren get beat up and lose. That's why Askren said "Hey Dana, is that really the best you got?" after the fight. It wasn't a diss on Lawler, it was about White not getting what he expected.

    If the choke was around mouth and above the chin, the would have slipped out quite easily. That was not the case because Ben had Robbie's lower part of chin and partially neck tight period. A bulldog choke is not a headlock. The chin is not facing towards you unlike the most of the headlock situations. There was no way Robbie would have been able to get out of that till the bell saved him. Not to mention, he was not fighting the choking hands at all as he didn't have much strength in his whole body being choked out hard. What do you expect a referee to do that at that point?
    Even if Robbie was not out, it is his fault that not fighting the choking hands at all and let his arm go limp like that in front of millions of people.
    If how Robbie did is considered a legit, then how many fighters will fake their status and get an easy way out from bad positions.
    Watch the graciebreakdown on this, it was very well done.

      The thing was that Herb Dean made the decision for him. Watch The Weasle's breakdown of that ending. He shows a few frames where Lawler gave a thumbs up and flexed his arm while Herb was kneeling to check on him. Should've let him pass out. He wasn't getting out of it.

    • @John2corner
      @John2corner 5 років тому

      @R M The weasel the weasel lol who is thst dude? No offence but why do I take his thoughts on this over other experts like Graciebreakdown. Also, you cannot just let fighters pass out if you care about their longevity. Being a good referee, you never really want to let that happen otherwise why do we even need a referee?
      We don't even know if that was a legit thumbs up. Also, Ben was distracted when Herb approached so he released a bit. That's when Robbie probably came back. Like you mentioned, whether he was out or not, there was no way for him to get out of that. He was not even fighting the choking hands. He was letting Ben to squeeze hard enough for Ben to burn his arms out? Give me a break...No legitimate coach would teach you not to fight chocking hands when you are put in a bulldog choke. I am sure you know how nasty that choke is. It is not a headlock.

      Don't forget that if you pull/crank upwards going backwards, you can break a neck. Ben can crush watermelons, he surely could have broken Lawler's jaw or snapped his neck. Lastly, Couture had this technique of isolating his arm muscles while choking someone so that the lactic acid would be minimal. Askren, being a legit top wrestler, maybe could have held on for the remaining time in the round.

    Sonny, based on what you seen of Ben Askren against Lawler, you think he’s going to survive? He gets hit with big shots (chasing for those takedowns) and I don’t think his chin is going to last for a lot of fights

    • @boywonder4509
      @boywonder4509 5 років тому +4

      Askren was able to close the distance right away and wrap up Lawler. In his post fight he mentions making a small positional mistake when taking Robbie to the mat. That's how Robbie was able to muscle into that Fireman's Carry, slam him on his head, and proceed to ground and pound. If anything you see how composed Ben stays when getting punched on the ground. I think he needs to work on his striking defense and entries but he was on his was to smothering Robbie. Just my opinion though.

    • @ishakaimen1576
      @ishakaimen1576 5 років тому

      Fernando Antonio you would think someone who is 19-0 has already got his entries figured out. Also how do you make a grappling mistake like that, when you are a top grappler? To be honest not very promising fight, we’ll have to see what he does in the next fight

    • @boywonder4509
      @boywonder4509 5 років тому +5

      @@ishakaimen1576 Top grappler or not mistakes happen all the time. Plus that slam was all muscle. Robbie's one strong Mofo. By entries I mean more his ability to close distance without getting punched. That's something that comes with sparring reps. He also took very little damage while standing. He was on his way to smothering Robbie like a wet blanket. The longer the fight the better odds get for the grappler. Especially one that doesn't rely on power and strength like Ben. I'm a grappler so maybe I'm bias

    • @nonyobussiness3440
      @nonyobussiness3440 5 років тому +1

      Dude he only took shots because he got slammed and was smart enough to grab Robbie, find his hands, trying to transition to a better position. In exchange Askren took clean heavy blows which was better because most fighters go defensive mode and curl up in a ball or go on their back in attempt to pull guard. In that situation that’s the worst thing you can do because you just got slammed and you’re opponent is going to drop bombs on you if you go defensive and don’t attempt to get out of that position they stop the fight right then. Better to try and do something getting Jko’d in the process then avoid possibly get hit clean but the fight stops.

    • @SonnyBrown
      @SonnyBrown  5 років тому +4

      I thought the Lawler fight would finally give us a clear answer to that but I still have questions! One thing to consider is that Lawler may have been one of the worse matchups for him in the UFC. I think he would handle Jorge Masvidal and RDA.
