Too bad I just graduated so I won't be able to audition for all state anymore. I play these pieces for fun now. or as fun as its gonna be because these pieces are hard...
This etudes bears a similar sounds to the beginning of Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald xD Also, I can't wait because I am hoping to audition for the Texas Community College All-State Band and the etudes uses the same for TMEA. :D
Hi Eric. I tried for region last year (didn't make it) but it made me a much better player and now this year I have a very real shot at it, your videos helped me a lot. I have a question. Any suggestions on the grace notes with the trills (For Example, beat 1 of measure 3) I've been having some difficulties. Thanks!
The best way to think of the grace notes plus trill is as two separate ornaments. The trill is really a triplet where the first note is on the beat. The grace note comes before the beat. I would encourage you to practice it with the trill but without the grace note first before you add it. It's 4 notes in total, with the grace note coming before the downbeat.
The whole triplet concept makes it look much more simple. Tried this as I was reading the comment and while it's not perfect (because its still a work in progress for me), it's 110% better, thanks so much!
So I'm a junior in highschool and recently I have been going back tot eh basics and fundamentals to try to improve my playing so for the clarinet hand position, the left hand is slanted and the fingers are curved? And the right hand is is the wrist bent at all?
This is hard to describe on the internet. Basically both hand should be forming the letter C, meaning your knuckles are up when you play. The left hand should be curved inwards, like you are turning your left hand to the right. The right hand should also be curved inwards, like you are turning your hand to the left. The idea is to be as close to the right hand trill keys and to the left hand throat tones as possible. Don't think of your wrists as bent, they simply are turned inwards. Also make sure that your thumb rest is at the right height. Your right hand index finger should be in line with your thumb.
It really all about voicing. Make you take enough mouthpiece. Practice double lip. Try to play in the clarion and altissimo without the register key(s).

hi so I saw a video from a couple years ago and it says that your a professional and also teach if you still do is there a way I can contact you to do lessons
You can start it counting eighth notes if you must. It doesn't go very fast so you may be able to count it in quarter notes instead of in eighths. Do not tongue all of the notes when you learn it. It's important you play the right articulations. Learn it as printed.
Long tones with a mirror. Learn to play without the register key. This book is essential, but you need a good teacher to guide you through it: www.amazon.com/Foundation-Studies-Op-63-Clarinet/dp/1581060629
+Eric Chi Thank You! As well one more question. I've been playing with a regular rubber mouthpiece for the past two years, and I've been wondering which mouthpiece I should get. I'm looking for one that can help get me a nice round tone, easy blowing, and play notes in the high range easier. Any options?
I think it depends on the context. If you're playing something where the pitch of the D is long enough where it can be heard, then I would add the left hand fork key to the side D. In this context, it doesn't make sense to me to coordinate two fingers on two different hands for a trill.
2 of the etudes are available here: imslp.org/wiki/32_Etudes_for_Clarinet_(Rose,_Cyrille) imslp.org/wiki/40_Studies_for_Clarinet_Solo_(Rose,_Cyrille) Etude no 3 is still under copyright so you will have to buy it. I'm sure your band directors will provide a copy. You can buy the book here: www.amazon.com/Artistic-Studies-Book-French-School/dp/158106053X
High C + the second trill key from the top is the preferred way. If you can't get it to respond, you can use High C plus the throat G# key although it's usually flat.
Hello Eric chi! Thank you for this video it was really beneficial my comment is a bit late lol but this video help me make all state this year as a sophomore so thank you!
How to make clarinet players feels like trash 101

You are such a good musician! Is it possible if could do short 10-20 minutes UA-cam lessons? It would benefit everyone greatly :)
I love you Eric chi
This is going to be a fun year
an outstanding job!
Jesus bless me this year 💯

Nice finish thx

I forgot to mention that you should practice the trill (triplet) as fast as you can so you don't distort the 16ths around it.
Yeah, took me a couple of reps to learn that haha, really messed me up for a bit. Thanks a ton!
Also forgot to say you sound AMAZING! My goal is to sound like this one day
követni nem tudtam szemmel hogy hol tart .wow its very hard grat.
Very nice :) Could you upload the bass clarinet etudes?
They should be up by tomorrow.
+Eric Chi thank you very much :)
I got them done today. They're up now.
Can you make the same video but slower tempo?
Sorry, but this is the speed the etude should be played. I believe UA-cam has different playback speeds in the settings.
I try out in November. I'm from from South of Texas and I'm nervous!
Brownsville!!!
I live in Alice! My boyfriend lives in Harlingen
I live in North Texas Dallas metroplex aREA

Whoa how can some one read that easily. I play clarinet and so hard stuff but dang. My eyes would hurt so bad after that. Not to mention my breathing.
i want to play this for solo and emsemble even if im in middle school 👌
and hi from Grand Prairie TX
Hello I have a very dull tone how do I fix that
Probably an embouchure/air problem. Make sure your mouthpiece/reed setup makes sense.
The kind of mouthpiece can also make difference.
hey etudes out but th website isnt showing
I wish you could do flute 😭
That's true Luis XD

I'm excited but scared lol
What's is the best way to practice getting the 3rd register to sound so good.

made area and then I forgot what I was playing during the song haha oh well theres always college
It's been a year since I've played a clarinet, this might be interesting. But, does anybody have any tips to help me play this 😅😅

What is the best way to finger the f sharp and e flat at measure 25?
F# in the front, Eb on the side.
Dang that was fast. Thanks a lot man
will you be doing a recording for 2017-2018
Yes, they will be up on July 19th.
hi so I saw a video from a couple years ago and it says that your a professional and also teach if you still do is there a way I can contact you to do lessons
You can contact me at Eric.chi.clarinet@gmail.com. I live in Houston just so you know.
Haha this is gonna be interesting :)
around what time will they be up
I have been sick for about a week but I'll try to get them up tonight.
Eric Chi I hope you get better
Thank you. I just uploaded them.
When you first start practicing this do you double it and tongue all notes or is it just how it's written

@Eric Chi,
Is there any warm up books or exercises you recommend that can really help?

What are you playing on now? An M13 Lyre or M15 would most likely work for you. Make sure you use at least a 3.5 reed though.
It's a Vandoren stock rubber mouthpiece. I play it with a Buffet E11 model.
What model Vandoren? 5rv Lyre?

How do you count the rhythm in measure three?
Read the notation on top of the rhythm. It is essentially 2 sixteenth notes with the second one clipped (short).
The top of the page addresses how it should be played. Just think of straight 16th notes with the second of each pair being clipped short
what book are the pieces from?
Artistic Studies from The French School.
www.amazon.com/Artistic-Studies-Book-French-School/dp/158106053X
How would you recommend trilling the C on measure 31?
The second trill key from the top is your only real option. You can try the G# key but it's usually too flat.
+Eric Chi Also, how would you suggest taking the beginning (Grace note into trill) I am having a bit of trouble adapting to that.
The grace note comes before the beat. Think of the trill like a very fast triplet. You can practice the two separate and then put them together.
I think it depends on the context. If you're playing something where the pitch of the D is long enough where it can be heard, then I would add the left hand fork key to the side D. In this context, it doesn't make sense to me to coordinate two fingers on two different hands for a trill.
where can i get this music?

thankyou
After the grace note in measure two ,do you only do one trill ?
Yes he does
How did you trill the measure after 30? Thanks!
High C + the second trill key from the top is the preferred way. If you can't get it to respond, you can use High C plus the throat G# key although it's usually flat.
Do you know Chester Rowell?
Yes.
