    So glad you guys "rescued" this one and give it lots of love. The bird has to pick you too. I'm glad it happened mutually. Green Cheeks need a LOT of attention and they mostly bond to one person only. Hope you can keep up the good work. They live longer if you can also provide some human veggies and food. Make sure no avocados. There's a list of food they can't eat. My Green Cheek just passed away at almost 29 years old. I haven't found one online that could live this long. I'm so sad but keeping the good memories..

      First, I’m so sorry for your loss. Though it seems like your conure lived a long (and I’m guessing loving) life, it’s always so hard to lose a pet. They become so much more than a pet over time so losing one is always so, so devastating. I hope you’re able to find comfort in your good memories as well as the cute videos of fellow green cheeks online.
      I’m sorry if this is an insensitive question, but I would like to know if you’re okay sharing. Will you be looking to adopt another conure?
      29 years!!! I hope Maggy lives at least that long! I swear the Petsmart people told me 15-20 years, though another quick Google search now says 10-25! It has been a wonderful experience so far. Maggy is my first conure and I’m so, so, so happy that he picked me at the store. I’m in love with him! We’re trying really hard with the fresh fruit and veggies put he’s picky like a toddler. So far, he’ll only eat the fruit or veggies if he sees me eating them! Except lettuce. Lettuce is still gross to him. Such a character.

    Your hubby did a good job constructing an indoor enclosure for Magnus. I always feel trepidation with the "cage" enclosures with bars, if the wrong gauge is selected, bird heads can push through and get stuck. What your husband constructed precludes that entirely. Excellent planning! 👍 👍 👍

      It is so heartbreaking to see them in those little spots at Petsmart. Since getting Maggy, I’ve only seen other conures there once! And that was shortly after getting him. Can this type of bird talk?

    • @nipplrr
      @nipplrr  5 місяців тому

      They can! They have very gravely voices but can end up saying a couple of words. Maggy currently says ‘I love you’ and ‘want water?’, and of course ‘baby bird’ haha. His words aren’t super well enunciated but he does a good job of mimicking my tone and flow of how I say them. There’s a specific word i want to use to describe how he ‘talks’ but my brain is drawing a blank! Most of the time, it’s just peeps and screeches and chatter.

    I heard those little huts can be dangerous? If the bird chews on it and the strings come loose it could get hurt ?

    • @nipplrr
      @nipplrr  9 місяців тому

      The first little hut that was in his cage (just for a day or two), would be considered one of the dangerous fuzzy huts for multiple reasons. One being it was smaller and a material that birds seem to enjoy to chew (I’m not sure why that is). The current hut he has in his cage does not peak his chew interest at all. I wonder if that’s because it’s not as fluffy? If there were any signs of chewing, I’d remove it immediately. I’ve even washed this current hut and have had no loose threading! It may also help that he has a lot of chew toys and foraging toys in his cage. The most dangerous thing about the hut in there now (at least in my opinion) would be it can cause hormonally aggressive behavior because they can see it as a nesting ground (if that makes sense). Baby bird doesn’t spend much time in his cage- he’s usually with me. So he hasn’t gotten aggressive regarding the hut. He actually gets really excited when it’s bed time and has the most adorable little routine with me. He is territorial of his whole cage, though, and does get grumpy at food time.
      I have read both great success with having a fabric hut in a bird’s cage and some very stressful stories regarding them. The most horrible stories actually were with wooden nesting boxes or the coconut shells! I did make sure to do research on what I wanted to have in the cage with him. I think it helps that I am ALWAYS home (I am a hermit haha), so he’s always under my watchful eye. If anything gives me the slightest bit of stress in his cage- I remove it immediately (much to his dismay). :)

    • @nipplrr
      @nipplrr  6 місяців тому +1

      @whitneyrosati8395
      I think I was very lucky with Magnus. Maggy was comfortable (and demanding) with our attention right from the start. The staff assured me that they played with him and gave him attention during food time and cage cleanup so I think he was comfortable with being handled.
      I hope your new baby starts getting comfortable! I do know it did take a week or two before Maggy’s full personality was released. So hopefully your new little family member just needs some time to adjust. Conures usually need a week or so to adjust to all these new changes. I’m sure you’ve done your research on conures so you know they can also take a little time to trust their new person. It’s so hard to be patient though!
      I also think Maggy was pretty young when we got him. He was small and just a few months old so I think it was much easier for him to have a clean slate for trust with us- if that makes sense. The other conures I’ve seen at the pet store since have been a lot bigger and have no interest in people at all. They make me think of sulky teenagers. So I think their trust and comfort would take longer.

      Oh, they are such fabulous little creatures! Maggy has gotten VERY LOUD. The first week or so he was reticent which I found shocking because a lot of what I read about Green Cheek Conures was... they are quite vocal. Apparently, the first week - two weeks is known as the "honeymoon" stage where your new little birdy friend is just getting used to the new space and routine. After that, their real personalities and nature start to shine. With knowing how loud they can be... I think some apartment situations could still work out under the right circumstances! I'll try to get one of his temper tantrums on video sometime so people can hear how loud they can be. They really are such great companions. Bitey, loud, wonderful companions!
