- A very good afternoon spent at Wigan North Western on the West Coast Mainline where we see plenty of services from Avanti West Coast, Northern, Transpennine Express and freight from DRS.
This wasn't the original location for the station to reside in. The first station was built in 1832 by the Wigan Branch Railway and was located at Chapel Lane was would only see three trains a day which back then was all you needed. This station allowed for trains to pass from Liverpool to Manchester. In 1838 the North Union Railway which saw their line head up to Preston, this station would then become the present site for the current station.
Several years passed without to much happening until 1846 when the London and North Western Railway was formed due to a mass amalgamation of several different companies, this allowed for the first trains to start running from Glasgow to London, however this was only made possible because the London and North Western Railway worked in collaboration with the Caledonian Railway.
Inbetween 1888 and 1894 the station was enlarged due to the London and North Western Railway connecting with the Manchester and Wigan Railway. Because of this the station saw terminating services coming from Manchester via Tyldesley. These trains served the station up until 1969.
Much like many of the stations in the North of the UK the station wasn't really seen to all that much and in the next 80 years next to no work was done to the station. Services obviously got busier and the frequency of trains coming into and out of the station got busier along with the size of the trains, in 1924 the station was officially renamed from Wigan to Wigan North Western and it wasn't until 1972 that more improvement work was carried out on the station. The older Victorian style building work was replaced with a more modern effort to make things more comfortable for the passengers and station staff. The track layout for the station was also tweaked but this was because of the impending electrification the northern section of the West Coast Mainline, because at this stage all train services running to the North from Crewe were all diesel hauled. So class 50's would've been a very common sight on this section of the line.
A year later the line was electrified up to Preston which saw the introduction of electric engine hauled passenger trains, most commonly class 86 and 87 locomotives would be seen hauling the big intercity trains from the capital.
And finally in 1974 the entirety of the WCML was electrified and the first electric hauled passenger trains started running from London to Glasgow.
My next station is Warrington Bank Quay.

10:09 it is almost de-branded because: rip northern. Replaced by Northern trains
I was actually watching Top Gear when i got the notification, been looking forward to this
You're lucky because you filmed before the lockdown. Anyway, I really like those Pendolino Trains.
Yeah he does tend to get a nice amount of film, and do it in advance
Hello, I hope you're well. Please don't challenge yourself to go out if you feel that it will put yourself or others in danger. We love your videos but we also encourage you to stay safe in these trying times.
I'm doing very well thanks, there's no need to panic my friend. This was filmed well before the measures were brought in by the government advising all but non essential travel and the coronarivus took a dreadful hold on the country
@@Tornado922 All's good then mate :D

Still prefer Virgin's livery on the Pendolinos.
It'll take some getting used to
Superb video which I enjoyed watching. Stay safe. :)

@@Tornado922 you're welcome. I am indeed keeping well. Taking each day as it comes. :)

I havent Seen this Train Station
Great action as always, just keep it safe ;}
I always do my man ;)
:}
What's my main concern is how well you manage your videos but I'm sure you've got it in control. Great seeing the flask train well with no flasks. Never seen one in my life.
This was the second time I had seen the flask train. But only the first time I had filmed it
Oh wow
Pendolino sounds weird and funny when they make that noise when they arrived at the station.
They certainly have a unique sound when the arrive and depart
Yes XD
i have never experienced a 390 do that before, maybe trains do have feelings ;) lol. and i also do like the new class 195s and 331s on northern. good station, never actually been here before, really like it. having a London north western 150 up this end of the W.C.M.L is really odd.
Wigan Wallgate is the other station across the road. It is on the Manchester - Southport line and also serves Kirkby near Liverpool.
Once again thank you kindly for the information
Due to coronavirus I have to resort to train simulater videos since i used all my real life videos!
I feel you
@@roanprice8929 haha
excellent shots 👍the class 68 nuclear flask i have seen at Ashford International were you have filmed from and pluckley I have also noticed there seems to be lack of shelters on the platforms incase it rains are they all up the other end
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed watching this. There are a few stations around the UK that do seem to have a lack of proper shelters
How many films have you got left?
I have 3 more to upload so I'm desperately trying to space them out as much as possible so you guys have something to watch
Thanks
Glad they kept the yellow ends on the new avanti livery so us orange army can actually see them👍
Well you guys are certainly doing an amazing job given what's currently happening in the UK and around the world! Keep up the good work!
hi jerad mate when my northern deals come back out do you recommend me giving this station wigan north western ago for tones and waves
Well personally I don't go after tones and waves so I can't really say
Decent video but as you say its a pity there wasn't some more freight for a bit more variety. Keep safe and take care, regards Gary.
Thanks very much, I would have liked to have seen more freight coming through but it was still very enjoyable

Where were all the Northern service passing you going?
They were going to Wigan Wallgate
Alex's Trains Cheers
@@Wirralspotter Np :)
Will you do a video back at Norwich and Ipswich later in the year because the 755's and 745's are in service?
I will be going back there at some stage
Pendelino accelerated so fast
They do have some decent acceleration to them
Why 390 130 so funny?
Avanti West Coast Wikipedia said that it is 5-car class 802s and 7-car class 801s
Time shall tell as to how accurate that is going to be, but they will indeed be getting the 800 series trains from Hitachi to replace the 221 Super Voyagers
Wikipedia showed that
The class numbers aren’t confirmed. Wikipedia doesn’t state this. All we know is that they will be in the AT300 series like the 800, 801 and 802
Where it is it (The train Station)
The train station is in Wigan in Greater Manchester and its to the South West of Bolton
Trains are still running there??
At the time of this recording the trains were still running normally throughout the UK. However 3 weeks ago all the train companies in the UK started running very limited timetables because the UK is currently in lockdown
Did you her the LNERis goin to be Avante wast cost
Callum Elliot that most definetly has not been discussed 😂
Which train did that young chap get on
He lives here
Nuclear Flask Train 🤣
That was the opposite of a Nuclear Flask Train
The flasks themselves might've been dropped off and the locos and empty wagons are returning
Can u do newcastle
At some stage I will go back there
I've been on the white train
The 390?
Yes
Suggestion, because you have stopped filming why don’t you try to spread videos out during the Coronavirus so we can have at least more time enjoying new videos from you. I don’t know wether you are or not and that was just a suggestion not that I’m your boss. Well done for catching the transpennine just at the end!
That's what I'm currently doing, I'm only releasing one film a week as to have some sort of content on the channel until I eventually run out of films
I was the kid waving on 185141,timestamp is 25:32
I can see my phone
There's your moment of fame haha, where were you off to?
@@Tornado922 sos bout late reply but Glasgow,if u look on my channel you'll see yourself
@@Merseynwresponses what's the video called ill have look at it
Also I'm first YAY
Aren't we staying at home????? I dont think this is legal
Look at the date at which this was filmed before making such a comment
Can you literally read???
Luka Mitrovic are you somehow blind. The date does state in the title in 7/3/20 a full 2 and abit weeks before Boris put us into lockdown. But ironic of you to say this when you see this and don’t think.
Read the date. Quite simple
I think someone needs think 🤔 before the make comments or read the description properly
