    Respectfully, not sure I agree with the rain cape example; here is why: I actually have both - There are people who can ride on warm rain without covering their arms, I happen to love it and to me it is actually a glorious ride - the vest keeps your core dry and warm yet your arms cools you down on a summer rain, if anything I make my rides longer under these conditions... love it - where there's such as thing as an uncomfortable cold rain where you want your arms covered - In fall/winter/spring I take my long sleeve cape, if I ride knowing that it will rain in the summer - I take my rain vest. An October/November rain shower in Canada is might not the same as TX, or Denmark, Colombia, Thailand or France - So I highly disagree in the sense that perhaps you are not taking in consideration that Rapha designs appeals for worldwide use and addressing a personal preference rather than a wider need that might not apply to a type or ride or the reality of a Geographical region. I tend to find this range very justifiable.
    (BTW: if you get it, amazing... you would think water goes under your neck or arms as it is a vest - nope... great vest, warm - if you sweat, it will not really breath that well, but otherwise a good rain vest).
    I think what you are trying to highlight is overlap, I personally find the thermo jersey to be slightly more overlapping with the midweight jersey (both, long sleeve). Having tried both, I find them somewhat similar. One slightly but not more warmer than the other. But these overlaps I find less common. The classic winter jacket which is mentioned early on the video and the PT Jackets, they have a very different fit, with the classic is a more relaxed fit and not expecting a high intensity ride where as to keep warm with the PT jacket, you need to have some intensity. Same with the aero jersey and the thermo jersey... different garment.
    I think the key is finding a garment that fits you and addresses your specific needs, as you pointed out. A rain cape and a rain vest have both a place in my kit in Canada, it might not if I lived in say, Costa Rica or if I didn't enjoy riding in the warm summer rain. I shopped around until I found a brand that fit me well - (i.e. Castelli is not my thing, but ASSOS shorts are the bomb for my bum ;) ). I don't find that much overlap but do agree that it can be confusing and overwhelming at first when you check the brand's entire inventory. The insulated PT jacket I had to return as the fit (and I tried two sizes) did not work for me.
    Having said that - thank you for this video and all content, it is useful to exchange ideas and opinions to learn more :)

      You are correct. My goal for the video was to point out overlap and stress that buyers must make time to understand the functions of the product.

    You are right about group rides and people looking you like a poser for wearing Rapha. It did happened to me.
    Guess their thought change when in one part of the ride it was a 3 miles sprint and I came 3rd out of 50+ people.
    Personally I'm not a fan of those clubs uniforms with commercial announcement all over their jerseys (to each is own). Also I wear another brand from California called Ornot.
    Love your vlog. You are great guy mate!

    Rapha is quite expensive but the quality of items sold at its stores are undeniably fantastic. A own a couple of Rapha garments given to me as gifts. For those unwilling to splash the cash, I say wait til they have a sale like they currently have now. And for tight gits like me, I'd say look at other stores. For example Galibier.

  • @ramsesm
    @ramsesm 6 років тому +3

    One more small thought :) - I see how you were packing the insulating jacket and while I realize that was not how you pack it for your rides, but this was a quick example, I find packing my jackets from the bottom up... (from the waist to the collar)... much easier... Because - then I'm on the saddle and I pull the jacket, the outer of the jacket is the collar already, so when my thumbs grab it and the jacket unrolls, it is already upside-up and ready for my arm to go in... :)

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому +1

      You're right, I was just showing a quick example, but I will try your suggestion since I don't usually fold mine like that. Thanks for sharing :)

    • @ramsesm
      @ramsesm 6 років тому +1

      Try it and perhaps if you find it comfortable, I find that with one pull I have the jacket/vest it by the collar or shoudler already so it makes it easier/faster to push my other arm in as the incoming wind opens it for me... So roll it from the bottom up and make sure the zipper/front is in the inside, so the back of the jacket faces out when its rolled... you will get the jacket open by one pull and already facing properly to push your other arm in... #marginalgains :)

  • @x87by8

    I'd just like to add that the bottom zipper on the Pro Team insulated jacket is for the rider to be able to reach into the inner 'jersey' pockets for food or nourishment while riding as its easier to reach those pockets from the bottom in the riding position than opening the jacket zipper from the top and thereby unzipping the entire jacket when its cold .. I agree that Rapha has an enormous arsenal of garments to pretty much suit every cyclist's need in varying weather conditions and that you have to study the function of the garment for your specific application. Great work on this video and a superb primer for Rapha shopping!

  • @ericburgess4995

    Very informative video, I subscribed. I agree tops that fold down into a jersey pocket is an important consideration. Also, its important to know what materials are used in making the product this usually tells you what the best use cases are. Just an FYI.. Gillet is pronounced with a soft G it's the french word for vest.

    Thanks for responding to my comment from your past video. Its a pleasure to hear you preach as they say in the comments below. I feel that most of your videos are very informative and true to one self in that you actually take the time to break down the garment after testing it out on rides and finding out what works and what doesn't.
    Keep up the good informative videos!!! You are great. I truly agree that for Rapha stuff it's expensive but you do get a lot of technical quality on every piece of garment they make that actually works and their unbelievable repair warranty is second to none.

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому

      You are welcome Raymond. I too fancy Rapha for the same reason you do. I have used their repair service and no one else offers that, plus the customer service is very good. I have used stuff and after many years when it broke and could not be repaired, they offered me 50% of the replacement. Can't be that. I love the way they focus on the 'cycling details'.

    Love your channel! watching all of your Rapha product reviews. I think I just about get away with wearing the same size in classic vs pro team. I'm an XS in both at 5ft 8 and 62kg. I've just ordered the pro team thermal jersey to add to my pro team rain cape - your review really helped, love your focus and detail on the stitching too! Whats your thoughts on the pro team vs classic bib shorts fit? Do you size up in those or just jackets? I currently wear the classic bibs in XS but thinking of buying the pro team bibs on sale.

    Great content and glad I found this channel. Is it possible for you to include the sizes you have in the Rapha gear you wear in the reviews as a reference. As a sprinter my weight fluctuates in the “winter” months(live in SoCal). So it rarely drops below 50 but I and planning to start purchase cooler weather items for upcoming cycling trips to colder climates.

    I was put of Rapha by their specific weather & riding tolerances far to confusing, in the end i went for Castelli, an Alpha ROS jacket for the winter & a couple of Perfetto's for spring & autumn with an Idro rain jacket to be worn over either of the aforementioned if the weather turns nasty, but for summer riding so far i have only worn cheap Chinese jerseys as the fabric is not technical nor is it really needed for summer riding but I'm learning as i go so who knows what ill be wearing later on this summer, great video as always Eldred with a clear explanation, more of the same please mate.

    Just a note. For me, from around 8*C to 15*C (48*F to 60*F) a sleeveless pro team base layer, pro team aero long sleeve jersey, and a classic vest II work great at keeping me warm (but not hot). 8*C is the lowest I would go with this combo as you will start out feeling cold at that temperature until you start putting some power down. This combo works especially great if your ride involves any descent climbs!
    Thanks for another great video. So helpful!

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому +1

      Well put Austin. That's the thing about the human body, we all regulate our temperatures differently and each of us have to learn how many layers work for us in each situation. Keeps it interesting. I run hot and usually don't need too many layers for the torso, but for my fingers, I don't mess around :)

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  5 років тому

      No. I used my regular sizing for the Pro Team Lightweight Vest. In fact I currently have the Pro Team Lightweight Jacket on order to be delivered this week and I also ordered a Large. The sizing is somewhat inconsistent from Jerseys, to vests and jackets, that you have to try them. I don't mind because they provide a free return label. I expect the Lightweight Jacket to fit, since it's stretchy like the vest.

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому

      Nazar, the sizing will vary with the lines. The proTeam fits really race tight, then the Classic fits looser like a club Jersey and the Brevet is kinda in between with the core having inconsistent fits. I stick mostly with the ProTeam line because the fit suits my body type. You have to find which line works best for you and once you're familiar with the sizing, just take advantage of the sales.

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому

      They are designed to be worn over either of them as part of a layering process depending on the temperature. Since they have pockets, you could just put them over a base layer, but if it's really cold then you can have your base layer, jersey and the jacket.

    Haha, I wish UA-cam has a reaction emoticons as I definitely agree with you that it can get confusing going through their products, I’m currently considering getting a pair of my first Rapha bibs and deciding which one would be better, classic, proteam, brevet or lightweight as where I’m living it’s 28-32 deg C and I would like some low light reflectors which is a pity isn’t standard on all rapha bibs.

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому +1

      Omar, they have a few on the ProTeam Bibs. Also for your region, you could look at the ProTeam lightweight bibs for hot weather or the Rapha lightweight bibs.

    • @OmarTan
      @OmarTan 6 років тому

      Veloharmony,
      Hmm, I went to RCC in Taiwan to try out Rapha bibs but can’t seem to find the right fit, my issue is more on the bib straps where when I go in a riding position, it shifts outwards to the point my nipples is exposed. I’ve tried S, M and L and all of them has similar issues, from worse to okay, Classics, Brevet, ProTeam.
      I like the brevet, but the strap has very little stretch which is okay if the front cutout isn’t at the navel/belly button, as currently going to the toilet will require removing the straps
      I can’t stand the lightweight meshes straps, feels very rough on the edges
      Thoughts?

    • @Veloharmony
      @Veloharmony  6 років тому +2

      The straps on a bib short are designed to keep the shorts in place not cover your nipples. Focus on how the strap supports the short and whether or not it stays on your shoulder when in the drop/riding position. Use your baselayer or your Jersey to cover your nipples.

    Rapha is splitting hairs (your words) because they know people will buy whatever they produce. Not that the customer actually needs it or will use it but because they want what Rapha has. You need to know Rapha's founder came from the marketing world and he knows people are sheep and will buy anything to be apart of something or to show off their wealth. Rpaha's products are very well made, great looking, desirable but does have a lot of useless products (too specific as you already mentioned pertaining to their gloves)

    Thank you for explaining the different types of technical jackets by Rapha. I have a Mavic Jersey that they say is XXL, but it fits me like I’m five years old. That’s disappointing because it was pretty expensive. Lol. Please consider doing one on Cycling shorts and the padding. Being a year and a half into riding, that’s been the biggest nuisance for me (former football player) when it comes to Cycling clothing. From trying to understand European sizes and cuts, to trying to figure out what’s good padding for endurance riding (40+ Miles) vs padding more suited for shorter rides (less than 30). It’s been a hit/miss/trial/error cause price doesn’t necessarily mean quality and vice versa. Also, longevity of the pads (that might be a difficult). Lately, I’ve just been sticking with getting Specialized clothing because their jerseys seem to fit and their shorts/padding is sufficient. Not great tho. Lol. Speaking of great - does anyone in the Cycling clothing community make great Cycling wear??? Lol

      CycoWarriorx, I hope this one helps you. I did this a while ago on the shorts that I have used. ua-cam.com/video/zuvl_g-qZes/v-deo.html

      ASSOS Miles line or the Rapha Brevet line... I prefer the ASSOS bibs for a number of reasons (less seams, fit better, less complicated construction and the material they use keeps you cooler - ice black) but they both use top of the line pads (same manufacture) and they both have a endurance density foam (meaning - firmer and higher density foam for longer rides). These lines are also a bit more comfortable than their other lines. In the case of Rapha, the pads are now different sizes depending on the size of the bib, where as ASSOS the pads are all the same size. For shorter rides you don't need a higher density foam, so you have more flexibility in what you choose, say the UNO line or the NeoPro which is what I use for training and everyday riding, very similar to the UNO but a bit heavier, not for racing. I have a Specialized bib and its great but I found the other two brands more comfortable, but it is a very subjective and personal thing... Hope this helps you.

      Ramses Moya Yes it does. It adds more clarity. That’s been the frustrating part of being still fairly new to Cycling; is deciphering what works vs what doesn’t, in size, fit and comfort. It’s not like purchasing athletic gear where you know the sizes are the sizes and who makes high quality vs those that are mediocre. I appreciate the info you shared because I’m definitely looking at both brands!

      Cyco, I tell you from experience - I started with some cheap shorts, then moved to LG shorts and then Specialized... It was not until I found on sale some ASSOS and to be quite honest, I got them because of how they looked... once I got them on - oh boy, I understood how different and great they are. I can sit on the saddle for longer, more comfortable and even with a couple of crashes and small tears, the bibs are fantastic. I would rate them higher than the Rafa to be honest. Get them on sale... I buy nothing from them unless they are on sale.. super worth it... and the Miles vs the UNO or the ProNeo - you can tell the difference on the ride, so for long rides, its not marketing bluff that they are made for those. I got a couple of friends started in cycling and told them to save their money and get the ASSOS bibs... Also, their sizing is based on height and its bang on. Glad it helped :) Cheers and enjoy your time riding.
