  • In this video I play devils advocate and talk through the top 5 reasons to NOT BUY the new 2023 Toyota Sienna. I talk through this while showing my personal 2023 Toyota Sienna XSE 25th Anniversary Edition.
    The 5 reasons are:
    1. The optic… it’s a minivan…
    2. Gutless
    3. Rear cargo space / no diaper changing
    4. Limited functionality (no off-roading)
    5. Unknown reliability
What are your thoughts? How does the Sienna stack up to the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey?
    Thanks for watching!

The biggest reason not to get a Sienna is the dealers want a $9,500.00 premium over list. Pure ripoff. I am sure some people are stupid enough to pay it, but to me it is not worth an almost 20% premium over list MSRP.

I raised my 3 daughters and owned a 1995 Toyota Previa SC for all of those years. My youngest daughter bought a 2022 Sienna AWD last year and they love it. Compared to what I owned all those years it's bigger, has more power, and it a lot nicer. I'll go through your point one at a time.
    1. The Minivan Optic - People need to get over themselves. Why do so many people care what others think? I've also spoken to minivan owners that said they would never own one and now love it a lot more than their SUV. If you had 2 rear doors on the Sienna that opened like SUV doors and lifted it slightly people would think it looked amazing. The shape and design is extremely good looking.
    2. Gutless - This has 90 hp more than my Previa and I didn't have any issues getting around. I've driven my daughters Sienna and it gets up and goes just fine. It's not a race car and doesn't need 500hp. People need to slow down and relax as this is much quicker than my Previa. The other benefit is that while the Sienna has more power than my Previa it also gets much better mpg. My daughter sees 34-37mpg vs my 17-21mpg!
    3. Rear cargo space - Many people may not need the entire 3rd row up which would give you more space. With the deep bin though you have a lot more space than I ever had and I always managed to make it work. Just use the floor when opening a sliding rear door, which there are 2 of them compared to the one I had on the Previa.
    4. Limited Functionality - Off roading? It's a minivan and that issue never affected me. Most SUV owners never, ever go off road either so that's a very lame excuse as they just want the image that they do.
    5. Unknown reliability - I would argue just the opposite. This powertrain has been around for years in other cars like the RAV4 Hybrid and Camry Hybrid. Toyota hybrids are very reliable and have an excellent reputation for reliability. You mention the V6 Honda Odyssey's V6 reliability and it's been known for many issues with its engine and more so transmission. The eCVT in the Sienna has been bullet proof. And to repeat, that 35+ mpg is much better than the 20 mpg with a V6 at these gas prices.

I think this review is not just. Minivans are not meant to be compared with SUVs. Minivans are not for racing and fast pickups, and perform differently compared to sedan cars. Their main use is practically for larger families and the comfort and space they bring in. Furthermore, minivans are supposed to look like minivans, lol, i never expected my minivan to look any different than a minivan. Furthermore toyota hybrids have been out for almost a decade and proven with time. I dont think any of the 5 reasons justify not to buy a sienna.

      @fav4it 10 місяців тому +5

100% agree. Why is this minivan being compared to SUVs (even full size SUVs) as for reasons not to buy it? They are separate vehicle categories. People generally don't take minivans off road. This model has been on the market for 2 years so if there's been any reliability issues, it would have been known. Toyotas are known for long term reliability. There is a high demand for the Sienna and if a buyer finds a new one at a dealer, it's likely marked up in price beyond the MSRP.

I can confirm a Honda Pilot with the third row up does not have more cargo space then a minivan. The cargo space behind an upright 3rd row in most SUVs is not functional, especially for families with kids.

Toyota is still the best for minivan. We looked at the highlander a d hated thr back row option, so cramp..so we bought our second sienna.

I traded in a 2012 Odyssey for a 23 Sienna. My Odyssey was a lemon from day one with AC issues, and the engine had to be rebuilt at 90K miles, due to issues with the rings. My only two complaints about the Sienna is poor interior lighting, and a hard to operate multi media display. It has plenty of power, and I love the 34 mpg around town. As far as changing diapers, open a side door, slide the second row seat back, and you have a large flat surface to work with.

His previous 2006 odyssey had transmission broke at 180K miles 🤢 my 2005 Toyota Sienna is still running great with strong engine and transmission at 324K miles. The Palisade does NOT have a bigger space behind the 3rd row. I commented on your 5 reasons you love the Sienna. We had a Palisade before our Ody. Now, the Ody has a much deeper well behind the 3rd row than the Sienna does. But, even if it didn’t, there’s definitely more usable space.
To your point, the Yukon XL or Suburban to get more room behind the 3rd row. However, you’re in a SUV. Harder to get into. Terrible gas mileage….and terrible reliability…..and on and on. I looked at new ones of those also….

You are being an amazing dad thinking so much deeper that you found a place for changing a diaper. This is reality of life, becoming a parent is not easy but we try to give comfort to our kids as much as we can. I keep repeating my self in all of your videos that I am waiting for my Sienna desperately. But by the time I get mine, that diaper changing spot will not be useful for me any more LOL.. During a test drive both of us noticed the drive train, wind and road noise. It seemed quite loud for a new 2023 vehicle, it reminded us more of something from the 90s. We drove on the interstate at around 60 to 80 mph along with some back roads. More noise from inside around the dash and behind us, both squeaks and rattles. Like you, we also have a Land Cruiser and that could be part of it, we are just use to it being dead quiet inside.

I didn't think the XSE would be THAT much stiffer... well, it is folks. Find a way to go for a test drive. the XSE also does not have the acoustic glass or sound deadening, so with the stiffer suspension I feel that it transfers more noise into the cabin. the suspension is just overkill for a minivan.

You forgot the biggest fatal flaw...you can't get one within a reasonable time frame.
I just today cancelled my order for a 2022 that I placed in June 2022, since they called me today saying it will be coming in November. Since the total price is $5,000 more than it was when I signed, I asked for my deposit back.
I was willing to take the chance on reliability, although my main concern wasn't the engine but the battery. It's Ni metal hydride, not lithium, and I drive my cars to 200,000k+. But as others have said, Toyota's been making hybrids for decades.
Our 2012 Sienna with 140k miles is fine, I'll replace the struts next month. We're past the family car thing, but it's still super-useful as an enclosed pickup truck. Just last weekend we drove a 300-pound tiller into it with no problem.
You can't take the 2nd row seats out of this now, which severely limits its use for cargo, which was a big reason I had second thoughts about it...although it's hard (or impossible) to find a car with comparable cargo space for the same money.
And the whole negative of "it's a minivan, so people will laugh at you" is just, with respect, stupid. I think $60,000+ SUVs with less usable space worthy of laughter.

So stop trying to downplay something that has been tried and tested to be the most reliable hybrid systems available.

And the Woodland Edition of the Sienna gives you the ground clearance to help you out on Gravel trails & snow/mud
Comparing the Sienna to body on frame XL suv's like the Escalade, Suburban & Yukon XL isn't really fair. Yes, behind the 3rd row they're bigger. But they're also body on frame huge SUV's.
Most minivans that store their 3rd row have that dip down.. not optimal for changing babies.. but for that you can slide the 2nd row seats back and have ample room for that in between 1st & 2nd Row on a flat surface.
Yes I like strong acceleration.. but for all it does give you.. It's one of the best Van's on the Market.

The Honda pilot does not have more room with the third row up and neither do the suburban or Yukon. Try sitting in the Yukon, suburban or Tahoe third row. It's tiny compared to the sienna not to mention you need to crawl back there. Then there's no food wells your feet are right next to the seat in the third row. The siennas third row is actually comfortable considering how far back you can recline the seats and there are actual footwells that you can rest your feet in. I know your really not comparing the trunk space of a pilot to the sienna

I give the Honda Odyssey points for better cargo-space options - the ability to completely remove midde-row seats nad have a relatively full-flat cargo space is handy. Also, even in all-wheel-drive mode, towing is problematic with all front-wheel drive - the heavier front-end slumps down, the rear trailer hitch jacks up, and vice versa. Riding in any of the rear seats is like seesaw. And motion-sickness possibilities a constant, the lack of a window to hang someone's head out means EVERYONE gets to enjoy motion-sickness 'aromas' for a long LOOONG time. (And even a minute is an eternity!)

Second, Sienna cost more and hard to find. Dealers were not flexible at all. Third, I did not care about AWD. We live in the South. Four, the 2023 Sienna is inferior to the 2017 except for gas milage. In summary, my biggest reason was not being able to remove the middle seat. In essense, I wanted a pickup truck with enclosed cargo capacity.

There's less room in the back of the sienna as compared to a 3-row crossover SUV? I'd be surprised. Compared to a Suburban XL - sure! but that won't fit in your garage. And changing a child in the back? If you do it often, I recommend getting a table back there. What I do is change in the front seat. Low floor as compared to an SUV. Yes. It also means easier for your young kids to get in and out of. Have you ever seen a kindergartener get out of a high SUV? and you know the parents NEVER take their off road. What do you think?

@@natalydelcielo You’re not crazy the only thing crazy are those markups,i kinda went to the same dilemma about a year ago before the markup prices got too crazy, cause we wanted the woodland edition but they only come in two colors for 2022,cement gray and midnight black my wife and I agreed that whatever it takes we gotta have have that Cypress Green it’s just Gorgeous even though we ended waiting for 6 months..and a big factor for pulling the trigger on this was the 8 passenger seating and having a capable AWD system, that the other models didn’t have at he time,we have big family I have 6 kids and the woodland edition only have 7 seating.I went to 6 different dealerships to finally got a lowest markup price.and we didn’t really care for the other bells and whistles the comes with it.I know that 25th edition is hard to come by but in the long run you will have a better value for the money being its special car if you ever sell it but at the end of the day you still have to do what’s best for everybody you’re family.Whatever decision you’ll make, good luck and hope you the best.

Just like in your case, this one also comes in only 2 colors, white and gray. We ended up caving for a big markup on the white and it's gotten me going in circles. If I'm gonna pay this much markup on top of an already expensive car, it should at least be everything I wanted. And then again, I don't "need it" as I can make my Highlander work with as we are a family of 4 plus the elderly parent in laws now and then. Again, thanks!

My wife and I have been seriously considering the hybrid Sienna. Over the last 20 years we’ve owned a total of 4 minivans, but for the last 8 years, only SUV’s. We currently drive an MDX, which is sporty and “classy”, but we are disappointed in the rough ride and lack of room in the 3rd row (our young granddaughters call it “level three”) My elderly father recently bought a new Sienna because he had trouble getting in and out of his Camry. He doesn’t drive, he’s chauffeured by his caretaker. My wife and I were very surprised when we rode in the middle row of his Sienna. You missed reason #6. Compared to the SUV’s we’ve owned there is a very low roofline. This makes getting in surprisingly uncomfortable. My wife is 5 foot 5 inches tall, and she remarked “nope, never going to buy one of these, I have to duck way down to keep from bumping my head getting in.” I was surprised and disappointed, I thought I had talked her into eventually getting a Sienna, and was looking forward to the great gas mileage. She likes the Kia Carnival styling, so we’ll have to look at that next, but sadly, it’s not a gas saver like the Sienna.

Are people really taking a Toyota Highlander off road? The vast majrity of people who have an SUV or pickup are driving it like our parents drove minivans and station wagons. I'm not saying noone uses an SUV or pickup as a work vehicle, but most people don't. It should also be noted that while larger SUVs with the third row down might have as much cubic space as a minivan with the third row up (which kills the comparison but whatever) , the space is not efficiently laid out. It isn't as functional as in a minivan.
