I read a book about this woman. She was so deeply disturbed and downright frightening. I remember seeing the movie that was made about her and it scared the crap out of me. Her parents were useless, as I recall. 😬
I was in kindergarten in Evanston, Illinois while Laurie was on her rampage, and the entire school was on lock-down. This was 1988, and that was unheard of at the time.
That was terrifying to you.

@@sasskvetch8617that is not the only reason mentally ill people were let out in the streets. Conservatorship laws were also scaled back to keep someone from being committed to an institution for any reason another person wanted, which happened too often. Some 40 years in, we can't keep blaming Reagan for this. There have been plenty of opportunities to help the mentally ill during periods when one political party was in control of the presidency, House and Senate. It shouldn't take four decades to fix this.

This woman was on a malicious path for years - the destruction left in her wake is shocking. The lack of assertive intervention from her parents enabled her to wreak havoc in the lives of everybody who crossed her.
As long as someone like a jodie arias doesnt commit a violent crime it doesnt really come up what a nasty person she might have been. When a person does hurt somebody than you know what they are capable of. Before that they might just be unpleasant.

I have bipolar and in group therapy I have learned that some families just don't see mental illness, they see the child is a bit unusual or unique. My grandma had schizophrenia so my mom didn't notice my bipolar..this one is perplexing. My half sister has OCD but I've never seen her obsessed over people .. this one is strange..thanks

Wagashi, yep back in the day the universities weren't the GRIFTERS they are TODAY! Unfortunately our GOV'T subsidizes Unis which need NO help. I was in college in late 80's-early 90's and could never imagine paying what you poor kids do! It should be ILLEGAL! Many of these colleges have endowments of not just millions but billions of $.

Having parents catering to her was what enabled her to keep going to college. And if you have no intention of graduating, it isn't as expensive. She was only there looking for a sucker to marry her.

Three years ago I was on the same team of hotel managers with Robert Trossman. I must say him and the entire group of survivors are inspiring how they support each other and meet on the anniversary of this horrible tragedy.
May they find a peaceful way to live and thrive.

Her parents are definitely at fault . They were more concerned with throwing hush money around to keep up Apperances rather than actually get thier daughter the help she needed
I don't know if parents should be blamed for their adult childrens' actions, choices , or behaviors, especially if they tried to get help for them in the past. However, I would blame them for enabling their children.😮

I just knew the monstrous thing she did.
I had no idea about the years of hell for all who knew her that led to it.

A lot of ocd symptoms are comorbid with schizophrenia signs, these seems more like the later imo. People with OCD fear their thoughts because they would never act on them, which is the HUGE difference here with Laurie.
I thought she might be in psychosis..flipping through the channels fast as lightening is something I’ve watched acutely psychotic mentally ill patients do

I’ve always viewed OCD people as being the opposite of a sociopath in a lot of ways. Like OCD people feel guilt for bad things they don’t do and sociopaths feel no guilt for the bad things they actually do

Thank you . . . I enjoy your videos. I have an unhinged sister that is 2 yrs. younger than me -- she destrkyed my limited life by an atrocious act of elderly abuse & I'm disabled. Horrific -- these monsters are REAL & deadly & don't want help.
Horrible. Her parents couldn't accept her mental and allowed her have an illegal gun. If you're sick enough to be put on Thorazine even back then, you must have been deemed having psychosis. I speak from having practiced psychiatric nursing back then. You see, thorazine was one of the older psych meds. But the severely mentally had to be put on it. By this time in psychiatry, there were other antipsychotic meds. But if you needed the Big T, you should be hospitalized. There were also other forms of treatment available at that time also. Her parents could have prevented that child's death. But you see, denial can be great. And MI had a great stigma then, moreso than now.
she could get a gun today, gunshows are the major loophole it depends on the state but gunshows cant make you wait two weeks. Im in Ca and we have red flag laws, the mental health one is if youre hospitilized against your will you cant get one doesnt matter what meds you take, but other states give dv offenders their guns back, its horrible.
@@gjh9299 They do background checks at gun shows. It only takes a couple mins. The same thing with stores. The waiting period depends on the state. The people you see that got weapons and shouldn't are due to nothing being reported. The Uvalde kid had a DV charge from attacking his grandmother. The judge never put that on his record. So when they did a background check, nothing showed up. The only true "loophole" is a private sale. I can tell you have never tried to buy a firearm.

I thought the same. She was mentally disabled tho. I think she knew the relationship was bad but thought he cared for her and was willing to take any pain for that care. Horrible

A society where a person with mental health problems has easy access to lethal weapons, is probably more to blame for creating the monster in this case.
America had easier access to weapons before and much less shootings. The problem is society but not the access of weapons

There was a Lifetime movie about this case. It starred Valerie Bertinelli as Laurie Dann. I forgottem about it until now when you were telling the story I thought this all sounded familiar like I saw it or read it somewhere and then I remembered the movie. It was called Murder of Innocence and it was based on this case. It’s scary that her parents were in such denial about her mental illness. Instead of helping her they just covered for her which leads me to believe they had mental

Laurie Dann’s murderous spree and it’s aftermath reminds me of a later case. Ethan Crumbley, anyone? The Wassermans were complicit in her actions because of their refusal to cooperate. James and Jennifer Crumbley, Ethan’s parents, are complicit in his actions too. The difference: the Wassermans got sued by the families of the school rampage victims. The Crumbleys are currently being indicted for their complicity as well.

And she didn't actually want help, she thought she was fine. Ethan asked for help repeatedly and was ignored. The only similarity is that they were both mentally ill school shooters. You could say that about all of them.
I read a book about her about a year or so ago and it scared the crap out of me and she still does. Her mental state and delusions and everything just stayed with me and scared me so bad.

When you look at her fathers behavior you know that it's both nurture and nature that had a hand in this tragedy
When I was a little kid, I was super obsessed with this Lifetime movie called "Murder of Innocence" and knew that it was a true story, but this is honestly the first time I've ever seen anything about the real story behind it. This was way before the internet, so you couldn't just easily look up stuff like that. Also, I was like 6 or 7 years old at the time 😅. It's actually sort of surreal to hear the real story. I remember feeling bad for Laurie with her mental illness, but after learning what really went on, she's not just mentally ill, she's also not a good person. But I can definitely see where that comes from. Her parents are even worse.

I used to think the plots and characters on lifetime movies were ridiculous...and then I saw this video. Laurie's character seems made up, it's scary to think people like this are real and among us.
In 1993 they made a TV movie named Murder of Innocence with Valerie Bertinelli playing Laurie

Years ago i came across the movie about this case and it definitely bothered me lol. Im a huge horror fan so it takes something pretty special to disrurb or stick with me. Valerie Bertenelli played Laurie. She did a great job! The movie "Murder of innocence" is dated etc but it delved deep into lauries mental state. The thing with ths raw meat was gross. In that dorm room she had dozens of packs of rotting meat around. :/ and then started having a compulsion to always wear gloves. Watching someond downward spiral like that on screen is eerie. That woman definitely needed help and her family definitely turned the other cheek. The mom was said to be the type that would care too much about what other people would think of her so never wanted laurie to seem like an embarrassment...
It's a good movie though!

I've been following you on here for almost 2 yrs but seeing that album just flooded my head and heart. I imagine you have a similar orientation to that whole- era. This was the first school-shooting I was aware of. I lived in the area and this changed the was schools operated, in that you couldn't just walk into a school at any time anymore. Thanks for covering this case.
This evil maniac suffered from way more than OCD! As someone who has lived and battled with OCD his whole life, I can tell you from experience that people with OCD aren't crazy. Our brains just make us do weird repetitive tasks and rituals every day to distract us from our true underlying obsessions and fears. The severity of OCD spans anywhere from a minor nuisance to an all consuming and life crippling chronic condition rendering some individuals stuck like prisoners in their homes, unable to live any semblance of a normal life! An observer unfamiliar with the condition may think the sufferers are crazy doing these compulsions, which can look bazaar, but we are well aware of how nutty our behavior can appear, so we get really good at hiding it over the years. I can vouch that OCD does NOT in any way cause someone to be violent or commit crimes, let alone mass murder! If anything, it does the exact opposite. One very common OCD obsession is that we constantly think we hurt someone by accident by inadvertantly hitting them with our car, so we will circle the neighborhood looking for injured pedestrians we hit even though we are certain we did not hit anyone or anything!
Pretty sure she was schizophrenic. OCD is often a comorbid of other mental health problems (speaking from lots of family and personal experience)😢
Im so happy we understand mental health better. We still have a VERY long way to go, but I think we can get there.

I first time heard of this case when I watch "Murder of Innocence" film on TV when I was in kindergarten years. It left big impact on me especially in trying to understand mental illness

I was a kid and it was so shocking that I always remembered her name. Sad that they are so common now that they don't stand out in the same way.
This was an absolutely insane case. Like everytimr I didnt think she could do anymore unhinged things she did over and over again. Its so messed up that her parents were too "blind" by their daughter's lies and victim mentality to see just how much of a monster she was and could've trier to get her help before everything escalated to the point it did.

And my theory goes with the fact that people with OCD do have intrusive thoughts which can exultate to harming yourself or others, which it's just a theory but that could be what Laurie might have been suffering from

This was one of the infamous killers who was in the news when I was growing up in Chicago. I never knew all these details. What a sad horrible tragedy. Those kids must’ve been terrified.
I was in high school in Oak Park, IL at the time. This story was very disturbing, and unheard of at the time. Little did i realize that this sort of violence would become way to commonplace in the future.

I just watched the movie about this case called Murder of Innocence starring Valerie Bertinelli. Bertinelli is currently in her mid 60's but she played the role of the killer back in the 80's and she absolutely ripped this role!! WOW!! I had no idea how good of an actress she is. The emotional range that the character demanded was incredible and she mastered it. SO IMPRESSIVE!!! I watch her cooking show sometimes on Food Network but yeah, she is a great actress!

The only person I’ve ever known to have been prescribed Thorazine was when I was in rehab and he was a 6’3” about 275 lbs guy with a violent temper who was court ordered there after he was high, directing traffic downtown and it took 10 cops to subdue him. Of course they put him in my room and every night before I closed my eyes, I asked him, hey big man, did you get your meds?

I've been married almost twenty years. We have three wonderful kids and he's my best friend. We have a good life together. Just thinking about him not being here is overwhelming. If we were to get divorced it would crush me. I truly cannot imagine life without him. All that being said, if he left me I would deal with it. I don't understand how much of a lunatic ou have to be to kill someone you supposedly love.
