"Uber has announced that it will be changing its controversial Super Bowl commercial before it airs during the game after backlash over its portrayal of food allergies.
The Food Allergy Research and Education nonprofit - which released a statement criticizing the ad earlier in the week - shared a follow-up statement from its CEO on Feb. 9, which explained that Uber had reached out to the organization and will edit out the depiction of peanut allergies in the final version of the ad."

Considering there are people who don't know that milk comes from cows, or that cheese is made from milk, telling people peanut butter is made from peanuts was a service announcement.

I'm allergic to peanuts. No, my allergy is not life-threatening, but still, it's a factor in my life. I did not for ONE SECOND think the peanut butter joke was about allergies. It was about someone forgetting the obvious, and I can't think of anything more obvious than that there are peanuts in peanut butter. It was HILARIOUS. Really, seriously, people need to chill. As Cenk said, we need our ... we need our ... what were we talking about again? 😉
My mother had dementia. My sister was just diagnosed with it. I’m 71 and losing my memory. I haven’t lost my sense of humor though. I thought the commercial was cute. Memory loss happens. Own it.

When you see a Parent that once was self sufficent, raised you to be a self sufficient Man and dosen't know you or your children, cant tell you if they are hurting. A very strong person that was proud of speaking 7 languages interacted with their children and grandchildren and then snap of a finger gone and look at you with tears in their eyes and tell that they are losing and point to their head, then someone make's a statement Own It. ????

This is a marketing gimmick they do it every year....no one is offended. They simply can't afford to run the ad during the Superbowl, but want the views.

What I find quite amusing is that the ad never says that the person in the ad forgot they had a peanut allergy. Only that he forgot the main ingredient. They were not making fun of peanut allergies, they were not encouraging that line of thought. Sometimes people just overreach for the sake of overreaching. Peanut allergies are very serious, anaphylactic shock kills. If you've never had your throat swell up and you stopped breathing, you will never understand.
So hey. I was a registered nurse for 37 years. LOTS of pediatric work. Somehow, all those PB&J sandwiches didn't kill OR put anyone (except a very small, small percentage of well known allergic kids) in danger or cause death.

The biggest offense is that Uber Eats has money for a SuperBall ad but not enough money to pay its drivers well.

I was not offended by the advertisement but I did think it super annoyingly stupid.
My teen aged daughter has extreme peanut allergy. I love her dearly. I thought the ad was hysterical.
My niece has a peanut allergy. But it came along after puberty. Once we figured it out, all she said was "Damn now i can't eat Reeses anymore ".

I have multiple sclerosis. An unfortunate key symptom for me is awful memory / short term memory loss. Lots of people in the MS community are kicking off about this ad.
Why can’t people just lighten the hell up? It’s bloody hilarious. Life is hard enough already without going around desperately trying to find things to be offended by.
We should all try to turn life’s struggles into humour where possible. It’s a much nicer way to live.

The joke was that a person with a serious peanut allergy forgot that peanut butter is made from peanuts.
If nothing else, it drives UP awareness for peanut allergies.

The peanut joke was not even about allergies. The punchline was that peanuts are the first ingredient in peanut butter. Given that the guy had peanut butter at home suggests that neither he nor anyone in his household has peanut allergies. He also did not have a reaction when he ate peanut butter. I really dislike having to explain jokes, especially bad jokes.

Humans make jokes about death, disease, disability, allergies, etc because gallows humor helps us discuss and process the bad things in life we can't totally (if at all) prevent. It's not making fun of ppl with allergies or disabilities, but of the shared human experience of being vulnerable to countless accidents, illnesses, and other disasters

I'm not offended by the peanut butter part. We have severe nut allergies in our family and I'd like to try to explain where the peanut allergy joke sensitivity comes from -- there are actually parents of non-allergy kids teaching their kids that nut allergies are not real, when they actually are life threatening, not just itchy hives, this has made those kids bully the nut allergy kids and there have been cases of those bullies attacking kids with peanut butter and putting their lives at risk. Of course, those parents who do teach their kids that kind of hate are the same ones who wear the red hats and worship the orange god. And we all know that both sides of the aisle get butt hurt by everything so small harmless jokes get blown out of proportion.

Why do people make everything about themselves and their own situation? It might actually be good for them to giggle at a playful joke once in a while once in awhile. People that can't laugh at themselves and their situation are a problem.

Yes it is! There are to many allergies to be mad about all of them and all of them are as important to those allergic to them as yours is to you and some are a lot harder to deal with than yours. I suffer from chronic pain due to muscle skeletal conditions incurred over 25 years of military service and allergy to NSAIDs so I have to endure constant pain without relief because anti-inflammatory meds, including the cortisone shot used for nerve blockage, give me a reaction, possibly lethal. Stupid is as offended does.

Jesus, people! My parents both died of Alzheimers, my child is gay and non-binary AND I have a life threatening food allergy. I didn't laugh because it was an awful ad but I didn't get offended. Get over yourselves and see the funny side of things. It must be exhausting to be so offended all the time.

Memory loss shaming? One of my late mom's favorite was these kind of humor. It made her laugh often and made it easier for her to deal with it herself. And I forget silly things all the time. I can laugh, or I can cry. I prefer laughter 99% of the time, and so does anyone who has to deal with me.

I’m offended by the overall stupidity of the ad in general.
I'm 70. The all of the ad made me laugh.
As a parent of two children clinically diagnosed with peanut allergy (and no, the ambulance trip to the ER is not a fond memory, nor the medical bill) -- what I find crazy isn't insensitive jokes about peanut allergy -- rather it's the amount of focus the food industry puts on allergies or sensitivies that can hurt people over time rather than those that can be anaphylactic. There is so much gluten free emphasis, which don't get me wrong, is important for people with Celiac and gluten sensitivity (which i also have) -- but peanuts and other nuts are the clear majority of food with incidents of anaphylaxis. Wheat probably isn't even 1%.
We have to be extremely vigilant. It's a real thing. Yet you'd think people are gonna die all over immediately from wheat, and it's just not nearly the same situation.
One of our kids also has gluten/wheat issues and he eliminates it from his diet. But peanuts are another beast. We don't not expect people to care, and we put this on us. But the amount of gluten friendly options vs. penaut free are shocking.
BTW, we love peanuts and it absolutely sucks we can't products in the house.
Part of it is probably that gluten is more trendy right now and peanut allergies have had the spotlight for a long time and there is a lot of awareness about it. My sister was diagnosed with celiac and it was crazy how many items have gluten in them that trigger reactions. Shampoo and lotion wasn't even safe! Gluten Free isn't even regulated, you can slap GF on anything and it is allowed, even if it has wheat in it. That isn't true with peanuts.
I'm also wondering, are you talking the warning of possible cross contamination? I think they just slap that warning on everything so they can avoid lawsuits
@@UnicornsPoopRainbows Not just warnings/cross contamination...actual ingredients. The number of times I've seen gluten friendly vs. peanut/tree nut safe is crazy.
Of course, being gluten friendly is a lot easier, because anaphylaxis is so much less likely even with cross-contamination.
You'll see so many gluten free flours made from something like almond, which is a way more lethal allergan statistically.
Yes, gluten can cause chronic issues and pain, and can get very dangerous for those with Celiac. I have a niece with Celiac. But the difference is, you can get away with mistakes.
We are grateful for the options available. It's still not easy, but it's really exciting when we find Peanut/Tree nut safe options.
As I mentioned, one of our kids has both the peanut/nut and gluten issues. With the nuts, we have no tolerance. With gluten, he can make a piece of toast in our shared toaster. He doesn't have Celiac. He gets EOSINOPHILIC ESOPHAGITIS (EOE). He's pretty sensitive if there's wheat in something. But again, there's some wiggle room, and anaphylaxis is very rare with wheat/gluten even for people with more severe situations.
Clearly still grateful and happy for those with wheat issues that they have options. But it's just crazy how much more attention it has over probably the last 15 years. I think mostly it stems from concerns about genetic engineering and Monsanto. Not a whole lot of attention to peanuts and nuts.
This is our battle, though. So we will just have to be vigilant. 😉

It brings attention to a lot of issues, and therefore helps all of them. My daughter is severely allergic to peanuts and most other nuts and seeds including peas. I wasn't offended at all, or by anything in that video.

I am confused...all they did was make a simple joke and structured it so everyone could get it...they could have said...'so there is strawberries in strawberry jam? Wow, it is the main ingredient.' There wasn't a hint of a mention of allergies of any kind...they just used a food that had the main ingredient in the name. The only thing I can conclude is they have taken peanut allergies and elevated it to even hearing the word. Now, I wonder if using any of the letters in the word 'peanuts' is taboo...oops just used an 'a'...'p'...'s'.
