    Lovely Dahlias, I have black Honka one, which I love, and the pollinators love it too. The only thing in flower arrangements once cut the petals don’t stay on that long, not with me anyway.

    I enjoy your videos. I planted for the first time, a few dahlias directly in the ground last year, and they didn't come up. I read up on it first and watched a few videos. I might have planted them too deep. I purchased some more and am going to try again. I live in Southern California, so I know I will not have to store them. Dahlias are so gorgeous; every time I see a video on them, I get Dahlia envy ! Your garden is so pretty ! 🌷🪻🌹

      Hi Anna, thank you for your kind words. I'd such a shame that your dahlias didn't;t come up last year. They do need a little water to get going - did you have any rain? Obviously, they don't want to be sitting in puddles, or they will rot, but they will need some moisture so cut check your soil with your finger, every few days to make sure there is some moisture under the surface. Hope this helps and good luck this year 🌸😁

    Thank you for this Annette. Hearing what you said about dahlia loss when I’m sure you are so careful about storage ,made me feel better about having left all my dahlias in their pots to rot over the winter because I had Covid and just couldn’t be bothered . Im sure that’s no consolation to you though. On the other hand, it means I have another chance to buy different ones. I have also bought some Bishops Children seeds as an experiment .

      Oh gosh I'm so sorry to hear that but you are not alone and thank goodness I have Richard to help with the dahlias because otherwise I think it would be too much for me! A friend of mine sowed Bishops Children in the past and absolutely loved the results and it's so exciting to wait for the surprise of each bloom 😁

    I do find Farmer Gracy supply excellent quality tubers and bare root perennials. I also ordered more dahlias from Peter Nyssen, just in case my lifted tubers don't survive the winter. I did leave a few in the ground but will be surprised if any have survived, even here in Surrey. Can't wait to start planting up in a week or so.

    I too have lost dahlias but being compelled to replace them doesn’t feel so bad when the new ones arrive. I adore Brown Sugar (replaced in case it doesn’t make it through) and also have Copper Boy which is similar but not identical. Roll on spring! Thanks for sharing your first batch of choices.

      Hi Jan, glad to know I'm not alone. I'm so desperate to tip out all my storage crates but I'm going to have to wait a week or two to see the real damage.😬 Roll on spring!

    I have a bishop dahlia in a container, I plopped the whole container into a cold frame last December, put a pot full of straw over the plant then added wood chip around the pot, well that worked a treat as I took it out of the cold frame last week and it's growing now.
    I potted up some FG plants today, same solution as you, into the cold frames until the weather picks up a bit. Luckily I don't get the extremes of cold or snow in SE Ireland.
    That Honka 'Rose' looks amazing, if it grows as good as Honka 'Black' AKA Veronne's Obsidian it should be amazing.

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Рік тому

      Wow, that's such an interesting idea with the straw and wood chip - not sure I'd have room for all my dahlias though😬 . I really hope I get more than just 3 flowers from Honka Rose this year - otherwise I might have to give up on that one, even though it's so interesting 😁

    That is a fat bunch of tubers..we usually get scrawny little things ...which are easy to rot when trying to get them established :(

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Рік тому

      Yes, I think it's always worth paying a little extra for 1 good tuber from a great supplier and then I split the tuber the following year if I need more plants.

    How much space to you give each dahlia please?

    • @cottoverdi
      @cottoverdi  Рік тому +1

      Hi Marie, I give them at least 50cms (just under 2ft) but best practice is to give them even more space - about 60-75cms. It depends how much space you have to spare 🤣. The danger of planting too closely is that they will suffer from poor airflow and be more prone to disease.
