I'm Annette and I'm lucky enough to have a walled garden in the beautiful Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire, UK. I love to grow plants from seeds, cuttings, bare roots and more. My channel is a detailed look at everything that we're doing in the garden, with specific details about the plants we have and how to care for them.
I hope to inspire you to confidently care for your garden plants throughout the seasons and will share tips for growing for stunning flower arrangements so that you can bring your garden indoors too.
I love flowers - the fluffier, the better! I grow a huge variety of tulips, roses and dahlias each season, and grow hundreds of annuals from seed each year.
Follow along for inspiration and in-depth instructions so that you can join in too.

Hi Annette, love your please be kind😁. I haven’t watched you tube for awhile as I’ve been working more and not so much free time. 😢Your garden has changed so much since the last video of yours that I watched. I think the last one was end of summer. I’m sure most people have one of these areas but they just don’t show it or admit to it. Hope you are keeping well. I keep all my leaves too. In fact I pick up all the leaves from the park across the road and I sweep up all the leaves in my street and put them all on my garden beds. I’m lucky here in South Oz as we don’t have to dig up our dailies for winter.
Oh the leaves, it's a tas every year. I think one of our best jnvestments was a ride on mower with mulching kit, just whizz over the lawn and they're gone. We have a number of mature Sycamores and the leaves are never ending. You leafy mulch looks rich and lovely.
Irrigation for a quercus ilex in uk?. Be careful
Your beautiful dahila videos are coming up on my feed - happy to discover these. I like that you lay out the blooms on the table and identify them, side by side. (Cafe Au Lait are some of the most expensive tubers to get now!)
I got this very exact begonia and your video has been so useful, thank you!!
Very interesting, Annette. Love those doors! As it gets colder out, I would love to see something about your planning process, ordering and how you stay inspired without a blooming garden.
Love your garden even the compost area. I've been shredding leaves to make compost and to mulch some my beds over the winter. Wonderful bird feeders. In the US we have problems with squirrels getting into the bird feeders. Lately, I've been adding red pepper . It doesn't hurt the birds but keeps squirrels away. I've put meal worms on the ground but never thought of putting them in feeders.
My goodness, don't be shy to show your compost area. I learn so much from what you share. You have a wonderful space and you use it well. I also feed birds, but have not purchased meal worms. Do you find that they attract squirrels?
Lovely garden and impressive collection!😍 A few mislabelled dahlias; the one you call Jowey Winnie is actually Jowey Frambo, whilst the one you later call Jowey Frambo is something else🌸 Sandra, maybe, hard to tell😊 Also, the first plant you call Wine Eyed Jill is a pompom, which WEJ is not, so it is definitely something else also😊 The last WEJ you show us seems to be the right one. You can see how the petals are formed differently😊 Thank you for sharing your garden tour!😎🌸
Great team work both. That's a lot Dahlias to get into storage. Your beautiful trees with those Autumn leaves such a picture. How big is your garden? seems a lot for just the two of you to take care of. Interesting about the Peanuts. Two squirrels raid my flat based bird feeders, so l let them have those. Then watch where the Robins go, under which Shrubs and take a handful of feed and scatter under those plants. The squirrels are so clever, l hung a fresh Coconut of which l had drilled a 2" hole, from a string in my tree. The squirrel chew through the string, the coconut dropped to the ground. Then the squirrel put his head into the hole and stuffed himself sick with coconut. It was so funny to watch. I only have a small garden but from my Conservatory I can see the birds and the Bees and those naughty squirrels. I even had a little field mouse get into my fat feeder, the square ones you put the blocks in. The lid was tightly on, but somehow he wriggled through a 1/2" gap and got inside. I took a lovely photo of him. Love your honesty re your compost bins, real life, always a gardening job to do. Happy gardening 🧑🌾
I am in 8b in Oregon. Lots of rain. My dahlias did fine for about 2 years left in the ground. But then, one by one they succombed to moisture I am assuming. So if I want more, they will have to be dug. Now I know
Delightful video - you are such a cheerful gardener. Enjoyed seeing the compost area. Wonder if you ever considered the HotBin to compost faster? Thanks for all the dahlia tips. My sister and I adopted your washing table idea (back saver) and ingenious mesh bags to keep dahlia types together. Dahlia tubers are now put away for the season for me in New Jersey, where it has been very dry for weeks. The tubers were almost too dry after just one day out of the ground, and their little necks were skinny and weak. Trying saran wrap storage this year for the first time!
Thank you Annette and Richard. So enjoyed your video. Autumn colors beautiful! My first year growing dahlias . Will try to save them as I am in zone 6 b.
Hi Annette, once again I loved this video. I think your compost area is bigger than my whole garden 😊😊😊
The autumn colours are beautiful. Annette I know you grow some of your dahlias in pots. Do you deadhead them to keep them going? I am a container Gardner and growing collarette s for the first time this year - NZ. They are looking lovely just now. I love the different seasons in the garden. Lots to do in autumn of course but we are now so enjoying our flower filled courtyard - late spring/early summer. Watering daily and sometimes twice as its becoming warm and dry. Great vid. 🌻🐝
Hi Annette, Good video and content; as always Quick question: > Where do you get your net bags from? Kind regards Johan
Hi Annette, I hope it's not too cold for you out there. Here in the Peloponnese, Greece we 've been having two days of continuous rain and I am a bit sad cause I haven't seen the sun for 24 hours. Temperature is 15C during the day which is a bit cold. Your red tree is stunning. Keep warm.
Dear Annette I had to laugh when you said, please be kind!! The leaf mould is worth gold. Look how lovely it has decomposed. Gardening is tough work. I took out my dahlia tubers which were in tubs, the soil was finished and the tubers like bantam chicken eggs - I was not impressed. So I re-potted them into small pots and I will feed them well, and then they can go into the garden soil. They perform better and I have to lift some of the other older tubers as well. It never ends. See when you used the blower to gather the leaves you should have blasted the tree with the left over leaves, like plucking a chicken :) have fun while gardening. I think we are going to have a summer storm tonight, I do not really like storms during the night, it is more scary than day time. I have improved after many prayers I use to be a real scary cat. I even asked my husband if I could have awnings over all the windows. Much better for me. Love the cages over the bird feeders, doves can be real gluttons they even chase each other. I buy chicken feed for the birds, it is fine and they enjoy that very much. Keep snug, take care. Kind regards.
great video Annette. You have been so busy. We started our dahlias yesterday. As we were threatened with minus temperatures last night, I also gathered all my tender plants and put them in the greenhouse, agapanthus, salvias, fuchsia, half hardy perennial grasses, cannas, coleus, and pelargoniums. It took all afternoon and I was absolutely shattered by late afternoon. Some of the pots were really heavy. Are you doing the Christmas crafts again this year? I loved that series as I love to craft. Happy gardening 🙂 x
Thank you for sharing … I’m getting great inspiration from seeing what you have done
Thanks for this video Annette and Richard. Kind regards Joke from Holland.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching Joke 😊🍁
I am from iran. U are doing a wonderful job.
Thank you so much 😊
Please I am new to dahlias. Second year. Unfortunately, my dahlias suffered so many pests this year. I think I also had powedery mildew. The tubers are healthy but the foliage was damaged. What do u do to avoid this.
Hi there, Sorry to hear you have powdery mildew, that must be so annoying. The good thing is that the tubers will be fine next year. Try not to plant them too closely together so that there is good airflow between them and as the plants grow, you can take off the lower leaves if they look a bit bedraggled and this will also help with airflow. 😊
Thank you for sharing this and showing how to divide the tubers
You are so welcome Linda 😊
Thank you Annette, this is exactly the instructional video I was looking for!
You are so welcome. Glad it was helpful 😊
Thanks for the video. I added Daisy Duke on the suggestion of one of your previous videos. Always love to see what other people love
Awesome, thank you! 😊
Thank you. Really helpful video.
You're welcome Viv. Thanks for watching 😊
Good morning Annette, plants are all so expensive and I try my best (at times :)) to take care, following your instructions re storing the tubers will prevent a lot of disappointment later on when it is planting time. Actually, all bulbs etc., that needs to be lifted should be stored in this manner. Gardening is much work, then again, as I said plants are all pricy and we should be more thrifty in collecting and saving. It is dahlia planting time here and the ones I had in buckets I found the tubers were not very big, so I separated them, checked to see that they are healthy and re-potted them into new containers and soil. I think I will feed them well every two weeks and depending on how they respond I am going to plant them into the prepared beds. For me it works much better. We do not get winter rains so we can leave the tubers in and we do not get heavy frost for the soil to freeze underground. Oh, I am in South Africa. Looking forward to a nice show of dahlias, I really just love them, they are so rewarding with just a little tender loving care. Have a beautiful day, hope the winter in Britain will not be too harsh, we are waiting for our rains to come, bad storms in the Northern parts of the country, hail like golf balls, I have so much empathy with those people, I am trusting we will be spared that damage. Many blessings.
Good morning Annette ❤ I have been waiting on this video. I have my dahlias drying waiting to be stored. Can I ask what you use to sharpen and oil your snips etc. Love Juliana from Devon
This is most helpful. I live where it is moist (pretty soggy lately) but where I can store them free from frost is very dry. My tubers have shrivelled over winter before. I will need to be wrapping them somehow. I have heard of waxing them. You mentioned plastic wrap - I may try used vegetable bags instead- the ones with holes in them. Reuse recycle etc. 😊
Hi Annette, thank you so much for all the storage information. I have only tried storage dahlia once and they all went rotten. Watching you, I can see that I made so many mistakes.
You are so welcome Pauline. Glad you found it useful 😊🌸
These Dahlia storage /care videos are so helpful Thank you! I save them all.
You are so welcome Carol, I'm glad you like them 😊🌸
H Annette. I've watched all your previous dahlia videos, but this is still interesting. Thank you. I us\e produce bags from the supermarket as they are a very competitive price at only 30p each, which means 10 only cost £3.00. I hope that helps any viewers. I stored some of my unimportant dahlias this way last year- my first time- and I wanted to see how it would go. Well. as you know, they all came through ok. My other special dahlias,I stored as I usually do, leaving them in their pots and let the soil dry, not watering at all until I saw growth in the Spring. This always works but takes up so much space. So, having experimented with the wood shaving method, I am now going to over winter all my dahlias in wood shavings. Thanks for introducing this method to em last year. Cosmos is looking so cut in the video. Happy gardening 🙂
Thank you for sharing this. It’s the first time I’ve grown dahlias. I’ve learned a lot from this video.
Glad it was helpful! 😊🌸
Hello. I appreciate you making the distinctions about how many ways there are and how to choose. I used to just “do whatever” without realizing that my conditions dictate success. It’s horribly dry here so it’s tricky to keep them from shriveling up but also not getting carried away with trying to give them humidity! Ugh. I guess as long as I don’t put them away damp I have a chance. I have had some success in the past. Thank you for the in depth video
Hi Leslie, yes, dry conditions are almost as much trouble as our damp conditions. I hope you have a successful storage season! 😊🌸
Most of my dahlias in containers are still in leaf, only 1 or 2 have died back enough to put into storage, the ones in the ground have died back, I'm going to leave them there and cover them with big pots and mulch. I'm planning on storing all my container dahlias the same as you in crates, but with straw instead of shavings. I was going to try and over winter 1 dahlia as it's putting on growth right now, even have a lot of flower buds forming, not sure if it's possible to keep a dahlia in growth completely over winter though.
Hi there, I should also have mentioned that you don't need to wait for your dahlias to die back or get hit by frost - you can store them at a time that works best for you, so if you've had enough of them this season, then just chop them down, dry them out and put them into storage 😊👍🏼
Oh you make me want to order Strawberry cream soo bad...😂
It's gorgeous!
Tiptoe through the window By the window, that is where I'll be Come tiptoe through the tulips with me Oh, tiptoe from the garden By the garden of the willow tree And tiptoe through the tulips with me Knee deep in flowers we'll stray We'll keep the showers away And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight Will you pardon me? And tiptoe through the tulips with me Knee deep in flowers we'll stray We'll keep the showers away And If I kiss you in the garden in the moonlight Will you pardon me and tiptoe through the tulips with me?
Thanks Adrian, that's beautiful!

Gosh I really do admire your patience and enthusiasm as you work through the flower beds lifting the tubers. Richard is such a valuable assistant. Thank you for pointing out dahlia gall, I didn’t know what that looked like.I have learned a lot from watching your dahlia journey in the course of a year. The pictures you have put on screen have enabled me to pin a few favourites. Your comparisons are very useful but best of all is the hands on knowledge you share. Thank you
Thanks Jackie, that's so wonderful to hear that you're finding the videos useful - that brings me so much joy, thank you 😁🌸
Good morning Annette, thank you for sharing with us as well as informing which are better growing dahlias. They truly are seasonal bloomers, but so gorgeous. I never cared for the 'open' face ones, the more single flower and the harlequin centres, but now I am attracted to them as well. The ball shape and water lily ones are so lovely and even the plate size ones, they are so showy. Did you know if you cut back right to the soil level the bushes which are 'done' they re-grow for a second flush. I did that pure by accident as a exhausted growing dahlia is really not that nice to behold. The complete bed came back with that second flush and I was so surprised and it does no harm to be tubers for the next season. A walled garden must show dahlias and roses!! Would it not be better to grow the pom-poms and the smaller varieties together then they are not lost amongst those giant growing ones. Have a beautiful day. Kind regards.
Hi there, yes, it's such a good idea to cut deep whenever you deadhead - best not to just snip off the flower head but to follow the stem down to the first or second set of leaves, this creates a much more attractive plant and it's less likely to topple over in the high winds. 😊🌸
@@cottoverdi Dear Annette, you cut right down to the soil level, the Dahlia will come back. Perhaps too cold in Britain. I get a second flush when I do that. Happy days.
Thank you for an informative video. Please can i ask, do you ever get problems with slugs eating the small plants ? Xxx
Hi Susan, we have loads of slugs in our garden but I've never noticed them paying any attention to the poppies 😁
Glad to see you back Annette! Looks like you had a blast over here in North America! You have so many things still blooming and putting on a show! The garden has aged gracefully!
Thanks AJ! Yes, it was an incredible holiday and very much needed! I'm gradually putting the garden to bed now - I just really feel like doing a massive tidy-up at the moment - I want to clear it all! 🤣
Thank you Annette. Quite a lot of work to get them out of the garden and store them.
Yes indeed! 🤣 But it's so worth it to protect them for next year 😁🌸
@cottoverdi So nice to hear English people use old language (indeed). Indeed is a greek word Όντως(Ondos) in modern Greek or Τω όντι (tooo ondi) ancient Greek.
Thank you for a brilliant video, all very clear.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🌸
I planted my Rudbekia in a large pot, it's already 4yrs old.
Wow! Well done, that's fantastic! 😊🌸
@@cottoverdi I thought perhaps I had got the time wrong, but no, I bought the seeds on ebay from the Amish community when my relative died, just as a reminder. I put grass cutting mulch and feed it. It is getting a bit pot bound now. It's 4 feet tall and still flowering 23 flower heads. Thanks for your reply. Think the Amish have seeds which are heirloom and not been interferred with. The bumble bees and hover fly love it.
Dahlias and fluffy cats. What more could a person want? I’ve been covering my dinner plates at night here in Northern California trying to get a little more time from them. Thank you for a great video, Annette.
Thanks Kat. You're so lucky to still have blooms!
Good morning Annette, yo, gardening is a lot of work especially if you wish to save bulbs or tubers for the next season, preparation is key! But it is worth it as well!! You have given such valuable details to the young or new gardeners out there, if they follow your instructions, they will become very contented gardeners in the future. I just wish to mention, I watched a Japanese dahlia garden, it was huge, probably growing for a small business, this grower removed all the bottom leaves off the plants for better airflow and it looks very tidy and I am sure the plants have benefitted from this. Just a thought to keep. We also have clay soil so we added lots of river or silica sand and loads of compost. It does help to break up. Many blessings.
That sounds like a great idea, thanks. I know it works for tomatoes too. 🌸😊
Love this video. Very anxious to see the "net bags" you use for storage. Keeping the label with the right tubers is a huge challenge. writing on the tuber itself can get smudged or not visible. Also, very pleased to hear you are a "Garden Answer" viewer, which I also love.
Hi Louise, yes, I love Laura and everything she does - so much fun to watch. I'm sure many of us can't imagine having such a big garden and the sheer quantity of plants that they have to manage but they do a fantastic job and are so generous to us on UA-cam and also to their surrounding community. It's wonderful to share in their happiness. These are the netting bags I use amzn.to/3NLyZyx
@@cottoverdi hello 👋 pretty lady how are you doing today and the weather condition like?
🙏🥀 Annette thank you for showing us how to prepare Dalia for winter storage. It’s amazing you got so many 369 dahlias. tubers its almost like a potato farm but you have more varieties of Dalia tuber’s than potatoes thank for showing division of the tubers I had some misfortune with my tuber some of them fallen out of the bunch but had no Eyes I tried to grow them but none of them came out does anybody remember Geoff Hamilton BBC gardeners world one of the best he used to show us how cutting crafting and dividing Dalia flowers i learned a lot from Mr Hamilton that many years ago sadly miss him I like the way you bring your baby dahlias out for sunbathing thank you for showing lovely demonstration. I’ll be waiting for your next video on pinching dahlias 🙏 from Dahliaoholic Ram
yes, they won't grow at all without the eye so just put them on the compost. I've seen some re-runs of Gardener's World with Geoff - I first started watching it when Alan Titchmarsh was presenting 😊
Love your videos all the time and I learned so much about dahlias from you. This year is my first dahlia year and I've started with 9 tubers. Now my question: If you lay out the tubers for drying in the shed, aren't they in danger of mice or other animals to get damaged or eaten? I would be very glad for an answer. Lovely greetings from Germany...
Hi Julia, thank you. yes, mice might eat them but it is less likely at this time of year because they have other food sources. I don;t leave them in the shed for very long - a matter of days - until they are dry and then they are packed away securely and I will show how I do this is the future video. Hope this helps. 😊
