  • Portable icemaker repair, simple fix, no parts needed.
Once again, I found myself struggling with an issue and could not find any solutions anywhere online.
I would’ve never of thought that it would be a simple hair preventing the ice from making.
Properly cleaning the unit often by running vinegar through the pump is great but does nothing for a piece of hair or a piece of plastic from the factory being stuck in the pump.
The Dometic Icemaker seems to be the same as most competitor icemakers, so this will probably work on other models as well.

Last year our first ice maker stopped working. Back then we had money so we just ordered another one. For some odd reason, instead of throwing it away I put it in the closet... Last month our 2nd ice maker took a s**t. I was in no position financially to "just buy a new one" so I Googled Magic Chef troubleshooting and your video popped up. Thanks to you I now have 2 fully functioning ice makers! 😁😁😁

I do admire how professional you created this video detail by detail explanation by the explanation I am a HVAC tech for 25 years and if you know basic electricity you could do it if you have issues try to get a electrical diagram now for the HVAC part if you don't have a HVAC EPA certification do not attempted replace the compressor before you replace the compressor have knowledge of all type of freon or gas reminder there are compressors that all you need is a small spark to create an explosion anything that you have to do with replacing the compressor you must do it outside where it does not danger anyone's life it will cause respiratory issue and yes it will kill well thank you for your video very well professional and I thank you so much God bless you all have a blessed life

My mother is on her 2nd machine. Both units mysteriously stopped working. She has to have her ice to chew on. After watching this, I suspect we have same issue or certainly with same parts system. Gonna take em apart tomorrow and get em fixed. I can't be the ice runner for the rest of my life. She literally has the unit next to her room. Thanks for posting the video. I will fix these portable ice makers before I melt away. 😋 Tank Q !

Thank you SO much for this very well explained video which enabled me, a fairly mechanically inclined lady, to feel I could undertake this repair. The pump as well as the intake reservoir were slimey and disgusting! After cleaning the pump, I taped a Qtip to a very narrow pick-type fork to reach down into the reservoir, repeating with clean Qtips until it looked clean. I let it rest over night. Today it is making nice large cubes again! Thanks again for the great video and for saving me $100!

That type of pump is similar to the ones used in automatic pet water fountains. An enclosed ice maker is obviously a lot cleaner than a pet bowl but my experience was that the pet water system had to be taken apart and thoroughly disinfected and cleaned at least once a week. As you saw, they are not tolerant of any debris whatsoever. One hair or bit of plastic would easily be enough to shut it down. Great DIY fix!

I’m in the middle of a 2-1/2 month camping trip in my travel trailer thru Michigan. My Frigidaire ice maker (probably all same Chinese mfr) did exactly what you described. Thanks for your video. I did have an obstruction in my pump, but it wasn't a hair, it was a small piece of plastic. After reassembling the machine, the pump was working but the movement of the tray was erratic. I found where the motor connects with the movable tray the plastic was broken and crumbled so the motor ran continuously but the tray didn't move. That's where the piece of plastic that was in the pump came from. It took me some time before I actually took the motor off, but I finally got there. Thanks again for your video. I didn't bother taking the front cover off.

Thank you for your video. It helped me out a lot. My igloo actually had a different problem then yours but thanks to your clip I was able to take the machine apart to get to the problem area. Past the pump where it is pumping the water into the reservoir was a little build up of some fuzz that directed the water behind the reservoir. Result.....water ran behind and then back down...the machine cycled without any water/ice and finished with nothing. Once the fuzz was removed it fills the reservoir again and life is good. Thanks for your clip again.....👍

** IMPORTANT - Be sure icemaker is *NEVER* level or tilted to the right
facing it from the front of the machine. Better to shim two of the
rubber feet with folded cardboard so it is slightly tilted to the LEFT.
Why? When it fills the bucket, it *intentionally* *overflows* it to
chill the remaining water. If the machine is tilted to the right, water
runs down the right end of the bucket, drips on the STEEL motor
bushing/STEEL shaft creating RUST. This WILL eventually seize bucket
    motor.

The biggest problem with these small ice-cube makers is that, if you leave them even a small amount of time, mould starts forming... and it's almost impossible to entirely remove. It has a reservoir that you can't get to, so you'll never know what's growing in there. So, be wary of these things - they do work - but 'health wise' may not be that good.
After my first one became infested with Black Mould, I threw it away. Now - with a simple 'redesign' (Getting rid of surplus plastic) I have device that I can place my Canned beverage of choice into and have it cooled within seconds.

Thanks for the video it was very informative learned a lot about my ice maker it stopped working on me I self cleaned it left it unplugged for a few days I removed the parts like you said in the video but one thing I’ve noticed is that the fan would run for only a few minutes and stop so I cleaned the fan and whatever else I could find that had dust on it crossing my fingers and toes it’s been running for the last half and hour and now we have ice in the tray,
    Again thanks for the info..

A good video, very helpful...I had an H2O tube that had a hole and needed to replace it...however I have a Magic Chef model, and like the guy says, models differ...so I had to loosen the nut/bolts for the compressor so I had access to the H20 pump plus remove the front cover taking out the screws on the bottom of the unit...so we were able to remove the H20 pump and take out the damaged H20 tube (video does well to show that)...the bolts and nuts holding the compressor in place are metric 10mm just so you know...got it all back together but had to tweak the cover to get the screws lined up for placing the front cover back in place...Oh when you take the front cover off you will have to separate it from the insulation, pretty much forcibly taking it off...again a good video but lacking the obstacles you face when doing this..thanks

This was super helpful as I was already fairly convinced the pump was the problem in our unit.
I found the pump well tucked behind the refrigerant coils in this particular machine. So, instead of trying remove anything besides the back housing, I simply unhooked the tubing at the top as shown and created a gentle vacuum in the pump tubing.
After pulling and pushing the air a bit, I gave the machine another good rinse and drain (both from the drain plug underneath and by tipping the unit gently).
So far, this has done the trick and I'm hoping it will continue on like this for a while yet.
    Thank you.

Hopefully you discover the same and you’re back up and running, just remember you do not need to take the front cover off, we did that for videoing purposes and a lot of these icemakers have drain plugs on the bottom, so you do not have to tilt it on the side but, if you do turn it on the side, please make sure it sits upright position for 24 hours before plugging it back in and running it.
