Anyone remember rogue trader? lol It became a really popular successful game because everything was in one book, I hear it started an entire company.
This is my 40K Safe Space - Boarding Action
my friend and me have so much fun with it - we also thinking about doing theme armies just for this game mode

Me too on the doing themed small forces for it! I only have space for one big 40k army that can actually be collected to point it can flex with meta etc… this let’s me get some other factions itches done in a playable 40k format I enjoy.

Yeah decided to channel my disappointment how the Agents of The Imperium into a positive hobby energy to build an Inquisition Boarding Force
Bard touched on this briefly at 19:40, but it's worth mentioning again. One of the truly great advantages to Boarding Action over 40k is the simplicity of individual combat. It really is one ork vs. one space marine, flat rolls, go. It's not "one ork with a waaagh, plus this for the warboss, plus that for a banner, plus this for a charge" vs "one space marine with this stratagem, plus this from the chapter master, rerolls from the chaplain, and whoops we have a banner of our own."
Are there modifiers? Of course there are. But you, as a player, aren't reliant on exotic competition combos just to maintain some sort of parity with your opponent.
I only came here to feed on Bards enthusiasm.
Boarding Actions has been slept on as a game mode I’m going to say primarily because of online salt when it first released about the price point.
The terrain is not any more expensive than other GW terrain kits of a similar size… there’s also cheaper third party alternatives if you don’t want to / can’t spend that.
This terrain is gorgeous when all put together though and, despite being a big ol’ hobby project you don’t regret a minute of it longer term as there’s SO MUCH JOY in this game mode. Personally I think it’s the perfect homehammer kit. Fits in a box, fits on a normal dining table, game mode that plays faster, relaxed and well balanced when you have mates over, but still feels like playing 40K.
Very excited for the new book and hopefully a whole new wave of people trying the game mode!
Do you know of any good cheap terrain alternatives?
@@Hikertrash215 ttcombat has cheaper MDF kits for all sorts of Boarding Action/Zone Mortalis/Necromunda terrain, I'd give 'em a look.
My group loved Boarding Actions in 9th edition, but we didn't like how bland it was without subfaction rules in 10th edition. The game just felt clunkier. I'm very excited to have the army rules and missions updated for 10th. I expect this will be very popular again.

@@Hikertrash215 there’s both 3D printed ones and MDF ones if you go searching online… personally I still think the investment in the main GW kit is worth it. It’s a big project but when it’s done it’s really gorgeous and feels worth it.

Just a little reminder for the Terrain set: It's literally two sets of Killteam Into the Dark terrains and could be easily bought together with a friend!

Interesting how you noticed and called this a passion project and the designers were let off the leash... in the latest White Dwarf, one of the developers provides designer commentary (page 68) and describes it exactly as "a labour of love from start to finish".

I still think about Bard’s Judiciar closing the door and dealing with Beard’s Orks to clinch the victory. Such a great game.

Amazing thank you for this… i have we been trying to build a 2000 pts army of custodes and orks… for me and my son… we only got into 40K from just before last Xmas… it is so HARD keeping up with all the changes. We have only just started painting squads as we just wanted to learn rules and play and we are getting everything from scratch! Boarding action sounds perfect! Pick up and play games with what we already have while helping build a bigger narrative so we can eventually play full and fully painted 2000pt battles! Love your content please keep up the great work!
Sticky notes is my solution for now. At the end of 10th ill probably grab out the label maker/whiteout for my book

Spearhead is similar. It's a separate game mode with all the mode-specific rules and faction rules in one box. The fact that we're seeing both within months of each other is interesting.
I'm very excited for Board Actions, and from this review it does indeed sound like this is basically the model Games Workshop ought to use for all games: release when ready.
Can't wait to try it out. Boarding actions was the best thing in 9th in my opinion.
Boarding action felt way better in 9th imo. Feels a wee bit thin in 10th to me.
@@Taz7713 why do you say that? 🤔 I've not played it in 10th yet so I can't comment.
@@War_Hammered I want to clarify that it's still a grand time to be had with the boys, but with the changes in a lot of units in 10th, and not being able to use detachment rules it just felt less flushed out.
The SoB detqchment that let you advance and shoot was hilariously fun. Just a squard of 30 sister sprinting around a ship at full speeed unloading their bolters in everything.
10th is still fun, just not as filled out. (Yet?)
@@Taz7713 hmmm that's interesting. Removing detachment rules obviously to probably stop armies of advance charge or advance assault weapons everywhere and abused.
Then again. In 10th every unit has its own unique rule which is kinda cool and probably what you would lean into more in the this edition for boarding actions.
@@War_Hammered having just finished this video, i can say that the new boardif action specific detachments seem to bring back some of what was lost, so it's very possible my only complaint will he short lived haha

One thing - I think it's a bit too much to say that everything is in this book and nothing else... now I don't have the book and you do; but... are the detachment lists like the 10th PDF, where they just tell you the unit name and limits, OR does it include the actual datasheets? I believe it's only the list of unit names and modifications right? Which means... you still need your codex for each army you want to play (although to be frank, many will just use free alternatives).
So to play BA, you need this book, the box of terrain (or from the old KT boxes) and codex. Sounds like the free core rules are all you need from the main rulebook.
That's still a significant buy-in... before you consider the models.
However I'm here for it, I've ordered the BA book and looking forward to it! I have all four Gallowdark boxes, so I'm currently slogging through preparing and painting the terrain so I can get in some Boarding Action!

As someone who has built and painted a lot of smaller armies (I like the variety), the idea of having a rules set design which will allow me to use them in games is very appealing. I bought all the Books and terrain when it was released but was a little disappointed that it came so late in the 9th edition cycle.
This is what I have been hoping for.
I agree with Bard! Boarding Actions deserves a bigger spotlight for how fun it is
I might just get the etsy MDF terrain for 3rd of the price and then give it a go!
Soft cover book also means it’s easy and cheap to get a spiral binding put on it. Then it can just lay open on the table on the page you need.
Seems like a great resource! I like the sound of the new mustering rules giving themed detachments

Thanks for this review! I liked the idea of Boarding Actions when they came out but the books were hard to come by and there were many of them. Nice to get a all-in-one book. :)
Im so stoked. Loved 9th ed BA. i was worried they left it behind until the end of 10th. So stoked.
Ive been using my Boarding Actions terrain as ITD terrain for Kill Team and hosting KT tournaments locally, but Im so so so so pumped for the tactical, specialized features of Close Combat in 40k. All the White Dwarf missions none of my friends wanted to play because they only knew of BA's launch reputation. I really hope it takes off this time around! Yall make me happy I preordered the book ASAP

Love this. Only just started to get back into GW after 25 years! I've been seeing Boarding Actions in the White Dwarf mags I've picked up and thought this looked exciting. I want to build a kil team. Then a Boarding Action team ( I know they are separate game systems) and then slowly build a 2000pt army. This couldn't have got me more excited.
Also I love the enthusiasm generally. I am not into the moaning channels, this is our hobby and I wanna be buzzing off it. I know all the draw backs, mention them but don't bang on about them, let's get excited!

I never liked it because of it being so spread out. I played a game where we used jungle terrain in place of mortalis terrain for set up. Played 1k sons vs Demons and it was a blast. Don’t get hung up on space hulk terrain. This is a great game for campaign stuff linked scenerios. No more rules changing weekly due to meta tourney stuff

Fast & Furious but a little bit of a Beer & Pretzel game

Sounds good, I was starting to think all the "lore" and "Fluff" rule makers went to AoS and left 40k in GW.
It's almost as if thousands of wallet's shrieked out in pain, as they realised the Combat Patrol magazine was about to be launched and people were locked into 90 issues of £10 a piece for their Boarding Actions.
I'm very confused with the detachments for Space Marines. So I cant mix Terminators with any other units? I only own Assualt intercessors, normal intercessors, scouts, and Terminators.
So would it be possible to play border actions as if you were in a two story building? Or would you play just a standard game of 40K?
This seems to be proving that taking literally anything/everything all the time isn't good for the game and that some sort of Force Organisation actually helps balance.
Now I really want to play boarding Actions

It will likely be the main, possibly only way I play 40k and would be awesome to see some regular batreps. I will definitely subscribe if you do them on an ongoing basis
We have been covering it fairly regularly throughout, there’s already quite the library over there. We will also continue to throw them in as we have done previously :)

Sad that we have to celebrate it when Games Workshop actually releases a complete product. I think it's great that they are learning and hopefully they keep it up but dang.

Putting it all in one place feels like a trap and they're just going to hurt me with it later...
That said, I have approximately adequate points of at least three armies from starter boxes and this format is exactly perfect for me, and I want to get it as soon as possible.
Build the terrain myself until I can afford the actual kit.

I'm so out since 10th Edition was out. Just to big, to many things change to rapidly. (And ToW finaly came;) but this could be very very cool to come back to 40k again. In a smaller and campange focused way. "The Baritons XII are ready to #bardingaction, sir!"
You can pick up MDF boarding action terrain for £30. There's no reason not to play!

Question. Because the Detachments determine what you take in a faction. Does that mean you don’t really use points? Or are you still limited to 500pts.
Would you say the rules would work with other kind of terrain (ie ruins)?
If it's close enough together yes. It's just walls and doors. You can make all doors open or use 'debris' as one time use doors. Just remember to keep out artillery.
Just keep in mind Boarding Action missions have a specific layout for each scenario. Doors and walls locations are not random, its balanced out to clearly control how far each side can get each round to make sure the mission works out :)

Can I still play my Eldar Corsairs? I bought 3 boxes just for boarding action and run them with prince Yreil?
From what I have found, no you cannot. I too have 30 Corsairs and Yriel and am immensely bummed by this.

My vote is with friends play corsairs in the detatchment that makes the most sense. It feels like genuinely the one major oversight I have seen.
Honestly might get this, would probably be easier to get someone into this format than full 40K.
I actually got excited hearing about this book. Like 50+,or double like yall said missions out of ONE book? This could be the way of grabbing people into the game easily and not be teaching them a not totally butchered game of 40k like most other game modes
Boarding Actions is such a great system!
But I'm gutted about what they did to Agents. The Assassin's were our only real "punch" and they've been completely removed.
So happy for this!
There's much potential & opportunities to create other borading actions missions or create narrative borading actions stories & looking forward to buying Borading actions Book 📖 , etc , & have been playing Space Crusade/Space Hulk scene the early 80's , sweet 👌
Are the data sheets for the squads in there or do you still need the codexes?

Always loved boarding actions, I didn't like the new kill team so for me boarding actions is a great alternative. Just to be clear we still need the codexs?
Unfortunately due to the nature of how GW are handling the app you will need the codexes for datasheets for a faction - however their multiple detachment rules, enhancements and Strats for boarding action are all in this book! Hope you enjoy playing buddy!
If you know you’re only going to be using a faction for BActs then just the data cards would be enough.

I m confused that I paid 250€ for the prior Boarding Patrol edition. Now you get it in one Book for 55 €
I wonder how the Boarding Action rules will translate to open board for 500pt games. I played a few 500pt games about a year ago and it was brutal due to magic bullets taking out whole squads even though you could only see one model.
Havent played but they said in this video that you can only shoot what you can see

Forgive me if im mistaken but the terrain is 130£ the book is 40£? So thats a £170 there are over 50 missions which can be played both ways ? Thats over 100 missions! Thats means its less than a £2 a game ? No?
Spear head for 40k. Boarding actions is the only good thing about 10th edition. 10th is not enjoyable to play it feels too competitive and not fun to play. Oh well more time for painting as we wait on 11th

I know people say its expensive, but I'll say for what it is, its fantastic.
I would bet more of it will start showing up on the second hand market once the new edition/season of Kill Team launches.

I found it expensive too, and split the cost with my brother. Afterwards, the sheer amount of different missions and setups that could be achieved with just the box made the cost worthwhile.
I mean… I know people say this… but it’s not any more expensive than other GW terrain kits of a similar size… and those kits don’t give you such a good modular and re playable set as this one does. I think it’s the perfect homehammer kit personally and, for all the reasons outlined in the video, really good value long term. I certainly don’t regret mine, I get more joy out of it than a lot of other hobby investments of a similar price.
