Hi everyone. Just wanted to clarify this is not an ad or sponsored video. The intention with this video was to make it quick and informative, hence the script. Hope you all enjoyed the show, and it helped to understand how to play the game.
So nice to finally see a video explaining how this mode is played without much complaining about rules or bickering about the product or if it's going to be DOA due to pricing. Straight to the point. No click bait. Love it.
"Private, open the munitions crate., Issue the Heavy Bolters"........ "Sir there might be a problem" ...... "What is it private?" ......... "Quartermaster stores have sent Mortars!"......." oh heck"
As a Kill Team player this is fantastic for jumping over to 40k. I already bought two boxes of the Into the Dark cycle so I've already got the terrain.
Just for those not wanting to buy the rather expensive terrain, just use some dry wipe markers. It is a base to base line of sight game so physical walls are really only needed for aesthetic. There are probably other options terrain wise as well. I have bought the Terrain for £103 but that is because it was my birthday and I will be also utilising the terrain for display purposes when not in use.
I would be very interested in a tutorial for how you painted your terrain walls. They look amazing and I would like to try to mimic it for my own table please.
This reminds me of 400 point Recon Patrols from 3rd edition, which looked far more enjoyable than Hero-hammer at 2k points. Hopefully this will catch on and do well without balance issues and rules bloat, but we'll see in a couple of months.
I wish someone would make a battle mat just like you’ve set it up in the video: ship in the middle, space void around it, in the size of a normal 40k killzone
It seems a little rigid, but I can't imagine any kind of video going over the rules of a game is going to be lively and energetic. Glad you did it anyway. It gives us a good idea of what to look for in the games you will be playing, but also as consumers of the product itself. I'll probably be picking it up and playing it for those days we don't have a lot of time.
Brilliant concise summary thankyou. This has helped me make the decision to preorder the book as this looks like a lot of fun but in a pocketsized package. 500pt games look so achievable to buy and paint.
I have bought the terrain (also bought some Zone Mortalis Necromunda terrain as well for variation) and this will be good as I already have a bunch of armies from from a mixture of the Imperium subscription and gifts with nearly 500pts worth of miniatures for each (BA ,Sisters, Admech, Necrons, Nids, Chaos, Tau). Great opportunity to just invite friends over for a bunch of quick games and we can vary the armies.
Could this be adapted to work with a Crusade campaign setting? Also, I'm planning on using my Zone Mortalis terrain, but this would mean I'd have to either make the corridors narrower to keep to the board size, or increase the size of the board to maintain the size of the corridors. Thoughts??
Why not? If you already have experience with narrative games. It would maybe have to be like boarding teams competing for glory. Each match is your boarding team vs a new threat, your opponent also has a boarding team, you take turns playing as your boarding team and whatever the designed threat is they are facing during a boarding action. You get to upgrade after each mission via experience and replacing guys that die. Whoever does the best after a set number of missions, wins the campaign. Will require a lot of models if you are not keen on proxying.
Really appreciate this video guys! Good Work - straightforward and informative. One question I thought of though - where on the board can the reserves (not teleportarium) units appear on turn 2?
Omg so happy for this. You just convinced me this is for me. I have taken a break from 40k and went to killteam instead. Easier and faster to squeeze in a game. Now this approach is for me
Great video, very clear and easy to follow! Could you point me in the direction of the name of the song from the beginning of the video please? Assuming it's Montee but can't for the life of me find it. Cheers!
are you allowed to have two character models in a boarding action i thought i read it was a limit of only one character unless other wise said in the building of an army section
The arks of omen doesn’t have much information on the size of zones, and I don’t have any of the Galloway terrain or boarding action terrain. Could you guys perhaps give me the size of the zones on the battlefield? Size of the pillar spots, length of wall section from pillar to pillar?
I am late to asking, and even newer to 40k rules and whatnot in general, but I have a question regarding BA cover and a particular chapters "rules" I think. So I wanted to play Imperial Fists and I thought I saw somewhere that their chapter "rule" was something about when making a shooting attack it ignores "light cover." Does this apply to BA cover at all or just for 40k? Thanks for the video help btw.
I understand that melee obviously makes sense in thigh corridors and such, but it feel odd not having any form of shooting buffs. Like melee armies are just going to wipe the floor no?
As a new 40k player, is it still boarding action still a cool way to play? I'd have to buy the terrain, the books (for missions, which were written for 9th ed) and I'd have to adapt missions to fit wherever they are 9th ed specific (actions and perhaps other things). This game mode looks cool but just the terrain and one of the books is a pretty big investement. I wish GW made some 10th ed specific missions available like they did with the core rules so that it would be easier to get a taste.
Does this mean we have to slow-roll shooting? If for example I have two guys in a unit. One can only see one model in the enemy squad and the other can see multiple. Do I need to roll these separately so that only the guy who sees the second enemy model can hit him? What if one guy in the target unit has partial cover?
As a CW player this game mode might make storm guardians good? Rules as written, if I include the serpent shield platform, I can split the unit into 2, a 4 elf squad with the special weapons and the platform, and a 6 man squad fighty unit. Feels like it could be decent in a exploding 6s and extra Ap on the charge craftworld. I can't wait to try it out :)
You guys are awesome and it's a great video as usual. I am skeptical about this game mode myself. There are a ton of restrictions and while some make sense a bunch of others feel very arbitrary and less fun. Usually centered around armies themselves. I love Zone Mortalis and would probably prefer to recreate my own version.
So a shooting attack is limited to the exact moel you can see (this I get) but a melee attack can kill anyone in the squad no matter how far away they are? .. wtf.. why?
Guess it's to represent the rear models "stepping forward" when in the thick of fighting. Otherwise you could fight, kill the models up front, then your opponent couldn't fight back as they wouldn't be in Engagement Range. Wouldn't be fair really 😅
One question, can you only set one unit per entry zone or can characters be added in them without counting towards the max? Also, split 10 man units count as 2 for the purpose of deployment or as 1 unit that you can fit in 2 entry zones?

too professional guys showing up the big wigs ;)
Not calling him beard felt so weird, but I acknowledge it would probably be confusing to someone who doesnt know who or what beard is
This was very good way to show us. Thnx guys!
I've enjoyed not only all the explanation, but the bloopers. XD By the way, Joe "Ex-Beard" is becoming General Pancho Villa.
Despite not being an ad or a sponsored video, it was the best commercial for boarding actions I've yet seen.

Yea, while it is well known that games workshop sucks, surprisingly little 40k media lets the customer decide for themselves.
Uh, the title is "BEST way to play," that's hard clickbait right there

What are the dimensions for the board when both pieces are put together?
Great Video, however, the Space Marines force is (as far as I know) illegal, as you are only allowed one character model. I could be wrong, however.
Welcome to Teleshopping Tactics. You guys should make this a side gig.
Love this primer video and the production values were superb 👌 excited to watch today's batrep and see how Boarding Actions play out in a full game

I also thought of that. I miss the older versions, the new stuff is over stuffed full of rules. Now I want to play Patrol xD

It will definitely become less rigid as they expand on the rules going forward really simple balanced ruleset to build off of though.
Great video!
You started setting up with attacker units. At least the first UM unit was set into a virtual attacker zone.
“Mortars are a poor weapon choice in the corridors of a void craft.”
Kriegsman: *scoffs* it just becomes a improvised rocket launcher.
Nice! I feel like this is something this Space-based game has been needing for a long time.
Terrain looks really good. Hope to see a video on how to paint it.
uh... isnt the use of the apothecary and captain not allowed? in addition to the 0-1 hq and 0-3 troops and elites, its also 1 character only
Can you use both Uriel and the Apothicary in the same force? Dosn't that break the 1 character rule?
You must have confused the character with HQ

Correct, the cinematic is just whilst we're talking about set up, not a hard and fast example of an army
So excited to play this!
Can you shoot through your own units (say a necron warriors through your scarabs)
Does opening a hatch require an action, like raising a banner?
Indeed it is, and can always be done even if there's a rule saying you can't do Actions
