Sam, my friend, Most people in the west have absolutely no clue about Russia. No clue at all.
On the other hand, I am learning Russian language, I watch multiple channels about Russia, I dove into the history of Russia (a bit) but I can honestly say that I also still don't know anything about the country. But at least I respect the country and it's people and I am learning.

What's interesting in Serbia, many Serbs don't know much about history of Russia, or even Serbia they live in, but they love Russians. I loved Russians even before I knew anything about them. Everyone around me was full of love and respect when talking about Russia. It's like conditioned response to smile and be joyful when I think about Russia, and Russians.

@@ivangoran4461 Despite the cold war that I lived through and all the negative propaganda about Rssians and Rssia, I always failed to understand why Russians were such bad people. Ten years ago, I actually met Russians for the first time and my feeling was confirmed. Russians are beautiful people.
Regarding your country, Serbia.... I was there a couple of years ago, in Zemun.
The feeling and the vibe was fantastic. Beautiful people. I wish I could come back but Ruussia is calling and when I go there, I might stay. I most likely will not see any point in retrning to the Netherlands but I will never forget Sebia. And then again, who knows... I might still visit your beautiful country and people. ❤

Sure, now and again you get somebody who wants nothing to do with cameras, curiosity and questions, and nobody can deny such people the right to be that way, but most of the conversations you record are really quite heart-warming. Unless you're editing more than half the footage you shoot out of every video, and you've only been showing us the light and swell aspects of provincial Russian life, I don't think any one of your fans think anything other than that your countrymen and women generally seem to be really good humans. You make this guy feel happy for you. Even when you admit to being a bit bummed out, you somehow manage to provide a reason to smile a little. It's admirable, sir. And I'm not saying I think it would be wrong of you to make miserable videos. I'm only saying that you have a positive vibe that comes through, and I hope it keeps working for you. It certainly works for little old me. Всего лучшего, Sam!

Your routine with giving away the Kinder eggs is very cute and friendly. It was nice that Ksenia was willing to walk along with you. Having an extra person/personality to interact with adds a bit of interest, and of course, she's prettier than you are ;) . For the older houses... It's just history and economics. Removing older buildings and starting new is expensive and hard. It's rare everywhere. Of course, it's never pleasant to see something neglected and abandoned, but just being old isn't a bad thing. It would be nice to see the local economy doing well enough that remodeling and updating would happen at a faster pace, but we should be patient. When the owners feel more encouragement, they will make improvements. --- Your comments of encouragement to the one gentleman, about his home, were great to see.

Your friend is very nice and I admire her very good knowledge of English. I imagine that like everywhere, you would not want to be found down some dark alley in the middle of the night speaking English, you never know who you are going to meet, especially drunks who will just pick on anybody that seems 'out of place.' The tourists are students, probably well-educated and middle class, they are unlikely to hit you with a knuckle duster for simply being English! One strange thing is that as an Englishman living in Russia who used to be an English language teacher, you say at 2.39 ''...they're speaking perfect ...'' but the adjective 'perfect' has to be used as an adverbial phrase. I can not speak Russian 'очень хорош', I can only speak Russian 'очень хорошо! The adjective 'perfect' becomes 'perfectly' just like the Russian adjective 'прекрасный' becomes 'прекрасно.'

My Russian language skills are abysmal, almost non-existent. I've found it impossible to get past a few basics and will never be able to get to conversational level - I'm aged 74 which is my only excuse. My Russian wife (who teaches English) and I speak English all the time if we are out and about and no-one has ever paid any attention to it in a negative way. I have had young people smile in recognition and say a few words in English they remember from school. Or slightly older people who show an interest and wonder why I am in Russia when incomes are so much higher in the UK. I disabuse them of that notion when I point out how much a small apartment costs to rent or buy, and how much they would pay for a beer. :-)
All I can say is that Russians are more sophisticated and are able to differentiate between ordinary citizens and what Government and media do and say. Long may it continue.

You may be far from the frontlines however I strongly believe more sensitivity should be exercised. I live in Belarus and I would only give Belarusian or Russian sweets to people. Do you not see the unfairness of German/Swiss/Belgian sweets legally sold in Russia/Belarus and yet Russian/Belarusian sweets are forbidden to be sold in the EU? Why would you reward unfairness? Does anyone really think you shouldn’t speak English openly in Russia though? The premise is close to strawmanning, because what’s more important question is what would happen if you, or a local, were caught criticising the Russian government. Maybe that’s a street experiment you’d be understandably reluctant to try?

I saw the video made by the other foreigner and I thought he didn’t believe it either. Though sometimes Americans will write to me and ask if they will be safe in Russia.
