I watched your video on the rosewater/glycerin mixture. I cheated and purchased it premixed. It has changed my life. I'm in eastern Canada and between 2 years of having to wear a mask and brutally cold winds in the winter my face has been difficult to keep happy. I have both rosacea and flares of SD. Both are managed with the Aveeno oat products, vanicream cleanser and LRP Baume B5 but the rosewater/glycerin spray has been the missing link. Why didn't my own dermatologist tell me about this simple trick? He keeps telling me I have an impaired skin barrier. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Nowadays, we don't talk enough about not overstripping the skin. In recent years most of us, (mostly by chance, I avoided a lot of it, but still) were damaging our barriers, so not enough of reminding that the skin is not to be brushed with a brush. Literally and metaphorically.
I broke my skin barrier a year ago by going too heavy on adapalene. Petroleum became my best friend. I used to use it morning and night and it worked like magic
I had a broken skin barrier years ago before you could find little info about it. I went from having normal skin to feeling like I looked and felt like I had a really bad skin burn on my face. Skinceuticals Triple Lipid was new at that time and a life saver. Never without now.
Here’s one simple thing I started doing. I started to put the basics of my skincare routine on display, my cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturiser and sunscreen And I put all my treatment Products inside my bathroom cabinet. This way I don’t tend to reach for them regularly. I only take them out when I feel my skin needs that extra oomph.. and refresh. I get to pick my routine for that particular day! This way I don’t overuse them and also get more use out of them. I don’t need an Instagram worthy skincare cupboard I just need a more functional approach and that is how I didn’t only repair my skin barrier but i can also maintain it on the daily! Great video! Thanks.
How dare a spam call interrupt my 101 skin barrier repair class with the one, the beautiful, the only Dr Idriss. Do they not have any respect? Back to the class.
So, so, so helpful!!!! We always hear about the "skin barrier" but no professional explains it and possible reasons for it breaking like you do! Thank you!
I love watching your subscriber count move steadily upward. You’re definitely my favourite Derm UA-cam channel. I swear I’d make the trip from Alaska to NYC to be your patient if it was feasible. Thank you for doing such a wonderful job. Your humorous delivery is unmatched. I love it!
Honestly your subjective approach is so refreshing. So many UA-cam Derms tote their professional opinion as objective; even though it is in fact an opinion. Your approach is more educational with the allotment to choose for ourselves.
This is the best derm channel out there , not just trying to sell products or get commission so we know its genuine so many channels its just not educational they just want sales 😀
Thaaaaank you Shereene, my skin has changed drastically since I simplified my routine. Now I just use the CeraVe hydrating cleanser and vaseline (sometimes I apply a thin layer of fragrance free lightweight moisturizer before) and I was terrified my oily skin was gonna breakout so bad but as opposite it has almost completely cleared, it has almost no redness (I have rosacea) and no fleakyness. I cannot thank u more 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👑
I’m rlly scared bc I have ruined my barrier with tret AND this Cali weather being so crazy. She says to pt on casa like but I have oily-dehydrated-acne prone- sensitive skin….do I try it??
Thanks for sharing, your comment gives me hope! What fragrance free moisturiser do you use? And did the vaseline work for you from the beginning or take a while to settle down? Last question, have you found an SPF that doesn’t break you out?! Thanks so much 🙏 - from a fellow rosacea girl
Thank you, Dr. Idriss! I remember having 2 under 4. The days were so long. There were times I wanted to run off to a deserted island (with sunscreen!). I so appreciate you taking time every week to educate us on skin care. On top of starting a new business and raising your babes. You are an inspiration and breathe of fresh air!! Dr. Jart's Ceramidin cream saved my skin barrier after I absolutely ruined it with getting a little too excited about tretinoin. It's my miracle cream!
Thanks to you, I have started to use LRP Cicaplast baume on my face. I was a bit sceptical in the begining because my skin is quite oily and prone to cystic acne, and so far, doxycylin is the only thing that gives me clear face for a longer period. But, after a week of using cicaplast before sleep, my face is in sooo much better condition! It has just blown my mind! Its not just that it greatly reduced my inflammation and acne, but my texture and hydration are in so much better state. Cannot thank you enough for that and all the knowledge that you are providing!!! Hugs from Croatia! 🤗
Simplifying my skincare routine with products that actually work for me( I have roseacea) has made such a difference! I can’t use most actives and fragrance is a big no no. I appreciate your knowledge!

I did exactly what you said in this video when I felt my skin was reacting to all the exfoliating. Retinol 2x a week, exfoliating using mandelic/lactic or PHA 1-2x a week or BHA/BP cleanser depending on my skin concerns that week and honestly it's been best for me. Thank you for this !

Almost 3 months ago, I woke up at five in the morning to the sound of explosions, quickly packed up, and left the house. About a week later, my skin was covered with pimples more than ever. During this period, I did not pay much attention to the skin and found this video. It was nice to read the comments and see the support for Ukraine. I am grateful that there are people like you. P.S. now I am still in Ukraine, and I hope to return home to my native town soon
My dear Shereene, Just discovered your site, and watched several of your videos. They are truly fabulous, and it is so good to see you do such a great job educating the public/your followers about skin and the importance of maintaining its good health. Brava! It is hard to believe so many years have passed since I saw you last when you were still at the lycée. Super proud of your accomplishments. You’re an absolute natural in this medium. All the best in all of your endeavors.
I’ve had a broken skin barrier for over 2 years now, maybe even longer but never realized it until 3 months ago. I stopped using ANYTHING on my face except for water. It got better but I still have a lot of red dots and acne marks left and also a lot of comedogens which I never get. They look like little bumps under my skin, sometimes I can pop them tho. I’m now starting to wash my face again in the evening with the la roche posay toleriane hydrating cleanser as I find it the best one for my skin, the moisturizer of the same line and the cica plast Baume 5 on top. I’ll also start slugging with Vaseline over it, I really hope it’ll resolve my issues and I’m glad to have stumbled across your video because I wasn’t really sure on how to handle this situation correctly. Great help from you thanks 🥹❤
Dr.Idriss, I bought petrolatum the moment you suggested but didnt use it until l watched this video. It has been working its magic this two days. I have extremely sensitive skin and with a little goose bumps. I wanted to say thank you!!!
As you've advised I started using vaseline as occlusion and it really works - makes retinoids less aggressive and also increases effects of other active ingredients
Thank you! Even as an MD i can't keep up to date on the myriad products and claims, so i appreciate your videos...and your humor! It would be great if you did a video on the best cruelty-free brands (is there really any need to test on animals??)
My skin loves lanolin! Glad you mentioned it because a lot of people on youtube warn against it because some people can have an allergy to it. Also I wish more products had urea in them.
Always excited when Dr. Idriss posts a video, learning a lot from her as always and having fun while doing so. My skin’s health has been improving since watching her videos and Instagram posts. It’s great to see dermatologists on UA-cam sharing factual information on skin health and care. ❤️❤️❤️

There are just some products that just instantly cause me allergic reactions. Sunday Riley’s gel moisturizer gave me an allergic reaction that looked like a burn after just one or two uses. The most recent one I had a reaction to was Kiehl’s Super Corrective Soft Cream. I got a rash and itchiness all over my face. You just never know these days when products can have 100+ ingredients. But I’m usually ok with active ingredients and retinoids. So I wouldn’t say I’m sensitive, necessarily; but I I am allergic to some specific stuff.
I am admiring your painting in the background, I have one hanging on my bedroom wall that is similar, bright, colorful poppies! Oh yes I bought the working hands cream and the but cream. I use an AHA cream once a week and I notice a smoother skin surface!
A humidifier in my room makes a huge difference for me. I no wonder wake up with very very dry skin and my lips aren’t chapped. Plus, my nose doesn’t feel stuffy and doesn’t hurt when I breathe in.

Hey Shereene! Hahaha you always crack me up with your humor in your videos. I've been watching your videos since you posted your very first one and they have helped me so much in treating my skin. I am a nursing student and so I love the science behind your content. You're inspiring me to pursue Dermatology as my focus/interest in the future as a future nurse. Thank you so much!
I bought the Aveeno Calm and Restore cleanser at Target because I had a damaged skin barrier before a trip. I think it was caused by an exfoliant I used. All my normal skincare products burned when I used it and they normally don't. When I got the Aveeno cleanser, I thought it was going to be gentle. However for me, it burned immediately after applying it. It was quite a disappointment considering that it's supposed to be for sensitive skin. I also read through some reviews on Amazon and some other users reported having a burning sensation so be aware that it might not work for everyone. I will say that applying the Vaseline really helped so I'm glad she suggested that!
I would try the Clinique extra mild facial soap or the Kate Somerville goat milk cleanser. Those are extremely gentle and the Clinique one is unscented.
Gluconolactone is doing wonders for my skin. It is very light and with better results than glycolic acid on my skin. Through time my skin became more even and hidrated and faaaar less irritated
You literally crack me up & as much as I want to say that your mega informative videos are my favorite part of your channel your personality is un-topped so that’s just that.
Dr. Idriss, how did you know I needed this right now?? Just wrecked my barrier after using Differin without a buffer underneath this past week (I've been on it for 3.5 months, thought I was ready!), then smacking AHA to get rid of the flakiness. I learned my lesson.
Thank you for mentioning that you are a certified dermatologist! You definitely deserve & have earned that title! Being clinically certified is what sets you apart from the idiots that think they they know chemistry. Being honest, beautiful inside & out & freaking funny makes you the only dermatologist that I listen to! ❤
I love the O'Keefes hand cream. So glad you mentioned this. I use cotton gloves. I tried the latex. Was so uncomfortable but I'll try again in the winter. Thank you! Love your content
Thanks for that. I actually damaged my skin around the days because I left the cleanser on for too long 😬 and it is very irritated. I had to stop all the product and stick to SPF in the AM and moisturizer at PM. Also thaks for the notes on humid weather. It would be nice a video with product recommendations for that kind of environment, I live in Miami 🥴. And most importantly, thanks for your didactic and creative way to educate us. Have a great weekend!
Omg I’m doing something right, I use the Aveeno cleanser after my cleansing balm and I love it. I use the calm and restore serum after cleansing and lactic acid twice a week and retinol the rest of the week and that’s it. I did disrupt my barrier with a vit c from the Ordinary and used nothing but cleanser moisturizer sunscreen and at night vaseline. It took about 3 weeks for me to not feel any irritation at all but I got there👍
I would love to see your “ what I eat everyday “ routine. Like how much water , breakfast, lunch and dinner. Is there anything you eat specifically for your skin and hair health? Vitamins? Thank you. Love all the info. Learning a lot🙂
I stopped all acids, serums, exfoliants, acne treatments I only wash my face with mild cleanse (cerave) and apply lotion afterwards and twice a week I put vaseline on my face. After two days I could see a nice difference on my face. I have oily pro acne skin and I'm i just turn 40. My skin stpped being extra oily, no new breakouts, my skin looks moisturized not dry and oily.
Hi I am 27 years old skin nerd who recently discovered world of skincare. I have started with skincare basics. I apply spf daily without any fail. I started exfoliation twice a week with 5% lactic acid. Currently I am intended to stick this simple routine. But in addition, I want to start retinol too but the problem is that I am planning to conceive in the very beginning of next year which will make me stop using it. I have heard that the process of making skin tolerant against retinol is quite tough. I mean one has to go through major purging, breakout and all but eventually it's worth everything. I don't want to loose that tolerance during the break because of pregnancy. Not only that, after 3 years I will conceive again. I hope you are getting my point. Can you please make a detailed video on how can we avoid retinol's side effect and what can we use instead during pregnancy in order to not loose tolerance against retinol?
Retinol (over the counter) or retinoid (Differin or prescription)? If you want retinoid to be easier, apply moisturizer and let it dry after double cleansing (w/ oil then gentle cleanser) at night, then apply retinoid to clean, dried, moisturized skin. For pregnancy, try finacea 15% prescription (but it’s likely expensive), glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide can be used.
I hear you with the toddler, I thank you for sharing your knowledge. May God grant you sabr (patience) to be everything for everyone and bless your family especially your husband for letting us have this much of your time after such a long day! Hope you had some restorative sleep and a great Staurday in sha Allah (God willing). 🥰

Thank you so much Dr. Shereene for teaching all of us more about the skin and im trying to understand my sensitivity! I feel so much more educated and sure about my skin. I can finally take control over my skin health ❤
I started using AHA’s and BHA’s for acne and hyperpigmentation (which worked verywell). Eventually, nothing was working. I quit all chemical exfoliators and viola! My acne went down 100%. Moral of the story, even if you think you are going very easy on the AHA’s and BHA’s, you might still need to dial down a bit.
I love exfoliating with glycolic, lactic and sometimes even salicylic acid! Do you never use it anymore? I try to just see what I think my skin needs that day, and sometimes I’m just too tired to do more than a good moisturizer…
@@M_K_M_K_M_K I do still use exfoliating acids. Lactic acid and Salicylic Acid are my favourite. I just realized recently that I was over exfoliating and my skin barrier was damaged. My acne got worse because I was exfoliating too much. I gave my skin a break for a few weeks and now I only use AHA’s and BHA’s once a week. I thought I was being careful before as well but apparently it was too much for my skin.
@@ErlonJris I see! I think it can be so hard figuring out what is causing what…. When I started using glycolic acid I immediately loved the way it made my skin look and feel… so glowy! I think I maybe exfoliate a few times a week now, different acids… I definitely got a more flaky, red and dry skin recently which made me realize I overdid it with something, and I need to pay more attention to calming and moisturizing the skin :). Did your acne completely go away after that break and now with the acids in your routine? Thank you for replying!
@@M_K_M_K_M_K Yes it’s very difficult to figure out the right balance. My acne went down almost a 100%. I now only get an occasional breakout. But i’ve realized that my skin needs acids a lot less than I previously thought. Obviously it is also possible that my skin is just not ready for using acids frequently and it might take some time before I can tolerate it better.
Love you and your videos. I hope the universe gives you all the happiness, peace and success. Thank you for helping so many of us improve our skin as well as motivate and entertain us. ❤️
I was so intrigued when you mentioned the Skinceuticals because my skin LOVES ceramides. Fortunately I looked at the ingredients because it has lots of essential oils! Lavender, rosemary, peppermint, linalool, limonene, omg. Any one of those would be bad, but together they'd burn my skin to hell and back. Why would they add those? Sensitive skin sisters and brothers beware! Love your videos and hope you get some well-earned rest!
Totally agree about Vaseline. It has helped my skin so much!!!!! I wanted to try the Skinceuticals cream but it has essential oils so that defeats the whole purpose? Thanks for taking the time to create this video despite your crazy day!! We can relate 😄
I've switched so much of my skincare products based upon your recommendations and my skin is so much happier! Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
i actually damaged my skin barrier by under doing it, rather than over. it’s become colder and if i don’t take preventative measures and up my routine to protect my skin, my moisture barrier gets easily damaged. i also have eczema everywhere and EDS which people with these conditions apparently have very thin skin. it makes sense for me.
Great video! I like the Aveeno cleanser as well as their serum and the gel moisturizer. Weleda skin food is good, though I wish they'd sell it in a bigger tube. I have had eczema since I was a little kid, and I feel it if my skin is dry. After a shower, I use Hydratherapy lotion, followed by Aveeno Eczema balm from head to toe. I like skin oils too, but have to be careful. I should probably start using Vaseline. Also I wear spandex exercise gear at a minimum, as I find the close contact with the skin to be irritating over time. Agree with the humidifier! I live at 5000 ft and the air is super dry. Just make sure to buy gallons of distilled water to pour into it.
I am a new subscriber and I am glad I watched your video today! Last month my face and neck was red, burning and peeling it was so bad that my husband ask me to go to see a dermatologist that night I decided just wash my face and apply a thick layer of Vaseline all over my face and neck before I went to bed ( I was desperate) my husband asked what happened to you know? 🤣🤣🤣 the next day was a miracle! all those issues went down 50% I decided not to go out (very cold here in the Midwest) and applied Vaseline again the following day the problem was solved I couldn't believe it, thank you for talking about Vaseline now I feel good that I did something good for my poor face and neck.
Hi Dr. Idriss, Could you make a video about how to mix and layer products and what to consider in terms of hydrophobicity, pH, reactivity/formulation, clumping/flacking, etc? Thank you for all your content!!

Thanks.

I’m so glad that I started following you and other dermatologists. There’s a lot of misinformation out there about skincare.
Thank you!

I wash with CeraVe and Vase too and these work really well! I also have Rosacea and it is hard to clean your skin without irritating it!

My boys are 7 and 6 now and it’s a whole new world. It only gets better 💕 You make my Saturday! Skin care = self care and I can’t thank you enough for all that you do.

Any updates?

Hi Adreana! I have the same problem and my question is: did you use the retinol, the acids while only using cleanser, moisturizer and spf for restoring the skin? How many weeks took you to restore your skin? Thnxxxxx
wait, is this routine that you used to have or the routine that helped you after your skin reacted to over exfoliating? my routine is exactly like what you described

Thank you so much, my skin looks better than it did in my 20's😊

Dr.Idriss, I bought petrolatum the moment you suggested but didnt use it until l watched this video. It has been working its magic this two days. I have extremely sensitive skin and with a little goose bumps. I wanted to say thank you!!!
As you've advised I started using vaseline as occlusion and it really works - makes retinoids less aggressive and also increases effects of other active ingredients

I trust her because she has good beautiful skin
Thanks, almost bought it. That's my problem also. Even without alcohol, every hand lotion I buy burns.
This was such a game changer for my skincare routine! Can't wait to see what's next!

Dr. Idriss, how did you know I needed this right now?? Just wrecked my barrier after using Differin without a buffer underneath this past week (I've been on it for 3.5 months, thought I was ready!), then smacking AHA to get rid of the flakiness. I learned my lesson.

Hi
I am 27 years old skin nerd who recently discovered world of skincare.

I loooove Cerave’s Pm facial moisturizing lotion! It’s super mild, full of ceramides and doesn’t break me out at all.
i use shea butter
