      So true, it really is about balance! For my acne I have tretinoin, pushed it to every night because the doctor said I’d tolerate that after a while, but my skin stayed pretty irritated for months. Now I use it every other night or once every 3 nights, my acne is now actually doing way better with less tretinoin, more isn’t always more! 😄

    I started using 0.04% tretinoin in October. I used it up until March, when I noticed my skin was only getting worse. I took a few weeks off before seeing a dermatologist. She prescribed a lower dose, 0.025%, in hopes that I’d have a better response. I’ve been breaking out ever since. Basically 7 months of horrible skin - the worst I’ve ever seen. So many people told me this was normal. I saw my derm yesterday and she agreed that tretinoin isn’t for me and my skin was actually having a reaction. Thanks for sharing this! People need to realize that these aren’t one-size-fits-all products.

      I finally met someone who just totally has a similar experience to me. I also didn't find retinol suited my skin even in the lowest percentage. I suffered for almost 5months of breakout. When I went to the dermatologist in my area, she even said “how is it possible for somebody to not tolerate retinol at all?” 😅 I'm using only BHA to clear my pores and Vit C serum for antioxidants. Those two are likely passable enough for my skin to adapt. My skin now starting to get better with glowy finish 😊

Now I diligently unclog pores and start using the granactive retinoid 2% to help me with keratinized and face oil to moist up the unclogged gunk so it didn't stick and find the way out. It’s much better like probably 80% better with almost Clear skin 💕

  • @hayatidk

    I noticed with retinol that I only broke out where my skin was visibly congested before or tiny bumps were just on the verge of coming to a head, and no pimple stuck around for more than a few days. People say you’re “purging” if you’re breaking out on your typical areas, but even if I get a pimple on my cheek (where I usually break out) on an area that was totally flat and smooth before, I know it’s just a bad skin reaction. Really annoying that companies push the “purge” myth to get people to stick with a product for months that just isn’t working for them

      Stretch marks happen when the skin is tested past it’s normal capacity and has to do with the amount of collagen and elastin you produce. It all comes down to skin type some people get them some people don’t but you can’t prevent them with products or make them non existent. Cellulite is caused by fat there isn’t anything you can actually do to your skin to get rid of cellulite you need to exercise to reduce the fat, but you might still have it where your body stores it’s fat regardless of being overweight or not.

      @@megsantos5899 only washing certain parts are good for rather sedentary people, during temperate or cold months. If you sweat, or get dirt or grime on your skin, you definitely need to wash it off. That being said, Durant mean you have to use soap or some sort of detergent; using a washcloth is a good solution, as long as you don't scrub hard. And not using very hot water is also the way to go.

    Thanks for the video Shereene! ❤️
    I noted that you said that buffering a retinol by applying moisturiser first decreases the potential for irritation but in doing so it decreases the efficacy of the retinol. Another well known derm on UA-cam preaches the opposite - that being, that applying moisturiser first does not compromise the efficacy/absorption of the retinol. Do you have any further info on this/references on this topic?

      Is CeraVe moisturizer good for oily skin? Is has cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, cetrareth-20.

    • @chandracox6814
      @chandracox6814 3 роки тому +1

      @@ireneshaffer914 yes it's great for oily skin. The moisturizer not the cream. Don't be put off by thise kinds of alcohols in the ingridients list. The kind of alcohols you mentioned are called fatty alcohols and provide hydration and act as a stabilizer to the formula. There are bad types of alcohols that should be avoided but these are not them. I recommend looking up alcohol in skincare and the difference between the good and bad alcohol. Cerave has great formulations and the moisturizer is great for those with oily skin while the cream is great for those w dry skin.

    • @ireneshaffer914
      @ireneshaffer914 3 роки тому

      Cetearyl alcohol and cetrareth-20 are both comedogenic rating 2, combine is 4. So confuse right now. She's the only one dermatologist didn't mention cerave moisturizer on her videos. Wandering why.

    For a few months I was trying to push through the ‘purge’ after increasing the strength of Tretanoin that I was using. My skin had gone from an even skin tone with rare breakouts, to red, sensitised and lots of breakouts and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. After realising that it was a reaction and wasn’t going to stop, I quit using it and concentrated on hydration and repairing the barrier. After a month my skin is now better than ever and I’m using the previous strength tret again, but just once or twice a week. This video basically validates my personal experience and I wish I’d known this months ago. Thanks for sharing your expertise 🙏🏼🙌🏼❤️

    I started Tretanoin on completely dry skin and use it once a week. I’m taking it slow becasue I have sensitive thin skin on my face. I also use Glossier niacinimide and zinc serum, an L Ascorbic acid serum I found in Amazon during day under moisturizer and spf… I listen to her advice and so far so good! I’m 49 and playing the long game and don’t want to over do it. If I can increase to twice a week then maybe every night I’ll do it SLOWLY ;-)

    Great video, thank you! I was always terrified of starting a retinoid, but with my dermatologists advice I went straight from nothing to nightly 0.025% tretinoin (edited for accuracy, I realised it was 0 025%, not 0.05% that I said before!) and my skin care friends looked at me like I was crazy! From all the skincare articles I've seen online I would have thought this wasn't possible, but I experienced no such "purge" or any adjustment period (beyond some very mild pinkness for the first few days), and instantly better skin, my acne improved and is almost completely gone after just one month.
    Keep up the great work, I love seeing more scientists and dermatologists put out information online alongside the huge amounts of misinformation that can easily spread : )

    THANK YOU for busting this myth!!! I have been thinking this for some time, there's no way your skin is "purging" when you try new products.
    I tried 1 month of Curology, "a mix just made for me", and I aws having a bunch of tiny "water pimples" (that's the best way I can describe it), it wasn't normal zits, it was like very easily poppable and it was just WATERY. And I tried it for 1 month, so 1 week more than the 3 weeks for the purge time, and it was still happening. I was told "my skin was just purging" but I said nah that's BULLL because I've NEVER had weird tiny water pimples............
    From then on, I could never believe shit about ppl saying "your skin is purging"

    Ahhh!! Dr. Idriss I absolutely loveeee your videos, they're exactly what I need!!!
    I do have a few suggestions for future videos, I thought I might leave them here 😊
    1. Moisturiser product for your lips that actually work ( not the flukes that cause more dry out)
    2. Hair products for strengthening hair follicles and helping with dry brittle hair.
    3. The debate about air drying hair versus applying heat after a shower ( I saw a few articles discussing how heat is a protector for the protein in the hair, unsure how accurate that is.)
    4. Laser hair removal do's and donts, I did many sessions for years and years, found benefits but at times, it stimulated my baby hair follicules and I started getting hair in areas I never used to get growth before ( my arms and shoulders started getting more hair then usual)
    Thats all I have for now, thank you so so much for all your amazing content 😍

    Vit c doesn't purge skin it reacts
    Lightest concentration and slow in routine , 2 times in week for 4 week then alternate and 4 week to 8 then see if it works then try daily or stick with slower ..... Consistency over intensity ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Whenever I start to use a new skincare product I always get pimples during 4 weeks of adjustment period, but no irritation at all ,even though I have super sensitive rosacea-prone skin. If the pimples still haven't gone after 4 weeks, that's a big red flag for me. The second way how I can tell if it's really a breakout or a purge is what the pimples look like. If they're red and swollen that means it's a breakout for some reason, but if they're just white, kinda small and don't hurt at all when I touch them then it's a purge. Unfortunately, I can't use the mapping method because I can normally get acne all over my face. Using new products only 2 days a week at first also greatly reduces purging for me.
