Ah yes, the very first Disney villain ever, Charles Mintz
I never thought about it that way but yeah. I'm sure there were earlier obstacles that Walt faced, but the first villainous character really would have been Mintz.

This was awesome. Hard to not feel a little resentment towards this guy, but I'm guessing he regretted his move in the long run...
Maybe considering he (referring to Mintz) eventually lost his studio to Columbia just before he passed away.

When Hugh Harmon and Rudolf Ising went to Carl Laemmle and said they should be in charge of the Oswald series, Laemmle decided to cut Mintz's contract short after the first year and produce and distribute the series himself. So he hired a young Walter Lantz to head the new studio. Lantz went to Disney for approval and Disney gave him his blessing. Lantz produced over 140 shorts with Oswald, and only three of them are known to be lost.
Even when the series ended in 1938, Lantz still used him sporadically in various cartoons. His last animated appearance under Lantz's tenure was a 1952 Auto-Lite commercial where he co-starred with Andy and Miranda Panda.
And of course, Lantz gave him a life in comics for over two decades, from 1942 to 1963. Even after the end of the comic series, Lantz used Oswald in merchandise and publicity images along with his own characters. As little as he resembled his original Disney/Iwerks version, I find it better than not using him whatsoever. It's making some effort to make sure he's not entirely forgotten.
Case in point, Epic Mickey is not the first video game to feature him. That would be a 1996 Sega Brazilian exclusive game called, Woody Woodpecker's Frustrated Vacations.

You forgot to talk about Walter Lantz he owned Oswald from 1929 to 1984 he made all the Post-Disney + Post-Winkler Oswald cartoons also you showed a Lantz cartoon Charles Mintz and Margent J. Winkler only made Oswald cartoons in late 1928 and early 1929 only.

The truth of the matter is that the story of Oswald, Disney, Mintz, and Universal has been publicly available information for decades, be it in books, newspaper articles, fanzines, television specials, documentaries, and other resource materials.

I totally agree. I was still learning the ins and outs of editing and hadn't yet focused on audio when I made this episode. I'm seriously debating getting rid of the outro altogether for the next episode. Thanks for the comment and hope you enjoyed the episode in spite of the audio blare at the end.
What happened to Mintz didn’t he lose everything after that
The Oswald character was bled dry for money after Disney lost him. The animations grew worse and worse, however, Mintz only capitalized on the character...and had married into money. So, no, he never got his comeuppance for his immoral business dealings. But he may have lamented that he didn't keep a deal with Disney going, seeing as how much larger they became than his own studios projects. Thanks so much for watching, listening and commenting!

They were offered higher pay & would’ve lost their jobs if declined. All, but three accepted the offer

@@yosefdemby8792 Yeah cause Walt hired them & disliked what Mintz was doing, they didn’t care about being paid lower than what Mintz was offering so they remained on anything they were supposed to work on before leaving

@@yosefdemby8792 Leaving on their own free will would mean they voluntarily agreed to move on & leave Walt behind regardless of what was offered. Mintz had to bribe the animators to leave or else they wouldn’t have cared as the pay they were receiving was expected for the time
Disney said in an interview published in the July 30th 1953 article of The Portsmouth Times that he did not own Oswald's copyright.

@@yosefdemby8792 He legitimately couldn’t have said anything else as Oswald fully belonged to Universal at that point & not Mintz, but I recall in a different comment thread that you happen to be on that Disney’s family have said that Walt did still miss Oswald throughout his life. Out of the comments I’ve sent it seems that you didn’t bother to look into the sources I’ve listed which I highly suggest you should, especially from the Walt Disney Family Museum website itself which details everything there is regarding Oswald & Walt
@@JaimeValladares00 He had more than enough money from Disneyland to buy the character. Universal only used him in comics and merchandise because of Walter Lantz’s insistence. Universal was overall indifferent to the rabbit by the 1950’s. Why didn’t Disney buy him? Especially since Universal didn’t renew the copyright, thus making the first Oswald cartoons public domain!

Oswald was still appearing in comics up until the 60s which the trademark of the character was still being used & therefore couldn’t have been bought or used by anyone else in newer interpretations. Public domain only applied to the first batch of shorts Disney & Ub made with the character, but that wouldn’t mean they could do new things with him as again Universal was still using him
I don’t like Mickey especially the fact he is Oswald’s official brother
