EXPLAINING DISNEY #13
I take a look at the evolution of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the ORIGINAL Mickey Mouse, created by the Walt Disney studio - but taken from him by Universal studios!
Oswald was Disney’s first star and this video follows him right from his first appearances in 1927 through to his stint at Universal, his disappearance in the 1960s, his re-emergence at Disney in 2006 and his modern Disney appearances, up until today in 2019.
I take a look at how Oswald evolved alongside Disney’s other popular characters, Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Chip An Dale, how he survived (or didn’t) amongst the times’ biggest cartoon stars - Felix the Cat, Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, The Flintstones and Yogi Bear, and how Disney and Universal animators changed his look, appearance, and personality over time - as a follow-up to my previous videos “Evolution of MICKEY MOUSE Over 90 Years (1928-2018) Explained”, “Evolution of DONALD DUCK Over 85 Years (1934-2019) Explained”, "Evolution of GOOFY Over 87 Years (1930-2019) Explained”, “Evolution of MINNIE MOUSE Over 91 Years (1928-2019) Explained”, “Evolution of PETE, Disney's Oldest Character, Over 94 Years (1925-2019) Explained”

props for actually using the paid promotion pop-up properly, I don't often see youtubers do that!
Instead of explain Disney can you also do Explaining Warner Bros? and start with history of Bugs Bunny
He best waifu
Do Evolution of Gladstone Gander!
I want Oswald back.
Mickey wouldn't exist it if weren't for his older brother Oswald.
Well, maybe. We can't know for sure if Walt wouldn't come up with Micky if he still have rights to Oswald. But that take a part in his creation, Oswald become more and more boring to audience without Disney's creative spark and rest is history.
Walt would’ve never gotten the inspiration for the mouse if he hadn’t lost the rights. He would be using Oswald to boot the company, of course if he hadn’t lost the rights Disney wouldn’t be as successful
Lazbro Brony I'm the younger one
They need to get him back
Oswald's success lives through Mugman!
There’s something legitimately sad about the fact that Oswald was this close to having everything Mickey has today.
And the Disney mascot would have been the same species as Bugs Bunny. Be to Donald Duck as is to Daffy Duck.
Well, at least he isn't completely gone.
Disney should make a new 2d cinema released film with Mickey, Donald, Goofy and the gang with Oswald in it.
An 'Epic Mickey' type film would be awesome on the big screen.
Joltimus22 I would rather have a epic Mickey 3
@@jamescolm1133 nah a movie would make the games more popoular
They should have a movie of epic mickey... Now that's a masterpiece made to come true.
But they should also include Oswald’s girlfriend, Ortensia.
An Epic Mickey movie would be awesome!
Oswald the "Lucky Rabbit" how ironic
They did Lucky Rabbit because Rabbit foots are lucky.
And he has two of them
He was lucky in one way.
Mickey the “ murder mouse” no irony
@@clover266 nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnno. That's not your name
I hope Oswald gets his chance to step back into the spotlight. I really like him so I hope he gets his big chance
@Kieron Paul yeah I'll try
I love Oswald a LOT more than Mickey.
They are making a Oswald cartoon on Disney +
Yeah, good luck getting smashed by a Disneyland ride
Again...
I loved Oswald. He was so cute and I hope Disney makes more with him.
Yes, until years later (2010), the company (Universal) partnered with and bought Illumination Entertainment (with their characters Gru, Margo, Edith, Agnes, Vector and Dr. Nefario) and then the MOTHERFRICKING MINIONS CAME AND STOLE THE SHOW!
(excluding Max, Duke, Buster Moon with the Sing characters, The Lorax and now the Grinch)
Emphasis on ‘was’
I've got my Oswald plush ready for his return
I am making a dress with 41 Disney Forgotten Princesses and have included Ortensia because she is a princess since married to Oswald and Mickey and Minnie are royalty.
The same goes for Foxy and Roxy, and Bosko and Honey.
This is one of those stories that shows that just because you know how to be a "business man" doesn't mean you're creative or know what to do with your properties. Walt started creative and knew what to do with his characters but he learned how to be a business man because of this story. And he made damn sure this type of thing would never happen to him again.
I think its funny he lost Oswald to a poker game
They should do a TV series on Oswald and Mickey being brothers
no, a rabbit and a mouse can't be brothers. because it really doesn't make sense.
@@ragdollyandy Umm they are brothers u can look it up and besides everything in the cartoon world doesn't have to make sense I mean Mr. Krabs from Spongebob has a whale for a daughter
@@ragdollyandy And yet Oswald is married to Ortensia a cat and have 420 kids.

@@anagonzalez8972 Okay, I was being idiotic.
I remember over a decade ago, before Epic Mickey, where I had dream about a Mickey Mouse-like rabbit. Few months later, I went to ask my sister (who was working at the Disney parks at the time) who that character was and did he ever exist; but she didn't know. Fast forward to Epic Mickey's release, as I was walking past a Gamestop, I noticed they had cover boxes advertising the game. Upon looking closer, I was in absolute shock because the same rabbit I saw in my dream was on the cover and turned out he was real. Immediately, I got the game and that's how he became my favorite Disney character.

Can’t believe Charles Mintz rimmed Walt Disney and took advantage of him for the rights of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
It would be awesome if we see more of Oswald in future Disney productions where he plays a bigger role rather than just a cameo once in a blue moon.
Charles Mintz was an asshole
Is that why they named the villain Charles Muntz in Up? 💀💀
Savanna Obregon Obviously especially with the almost similar last names and their first name is Charles.
Savanna Obregon yeo
@@fernandogamez7463 And his movement into Columbia after Disney left into United Artist still prove the point until Mintz's death.
Oswald is such an amazing and unique character. Love him
@@stefanyoutube2358 I hop we get epic Mickey on switch
And he's adorable!😊
@Garbage Guy agreed
So Oswald to Disney is like Waluigi to Nintendo
Yeah
More like Luigi, except more forgotten
@@puncake8945 so in the middle between as waluigi an luigi
No way. Waluigi still exists, and appears in things to this day.
When was the last time you saw Oswald?
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer I saw him getting thrown in the trash.
Yeah, let's not utilize this character enough which has potential, and then wonder why it didn't take off.
Can only hope they give oswald another chance and make it a REAL chance this time.
Part of the problem is probably that they don't quite know what to do with the Oswald, as he is too much like Mickey.
There is essentially no place for a second such character, especially since Mickey can already fill any role required, and already have several different versions that is still Mickey.
What they need to do, is focus on the differences, however small they are.
They're perfect for cooperation (Mario Bros, Luigi used to be a copy of Mario).
They're perfect for friendly rivalry (Street Fighter, Ken was originally a second Ryu in fighting abilities).
There is also the "We're the same, but not" (Morrigan & Lilith comes to mind, among others).
I know my examples are from computer games, but it is possible to find similar situations in other fiction, especially in crossovers, but... thinking of it, has Mickey EVER had any rival, friendly or not?
Also, now when Mickey is big, and it may seem impossible to do certain things with him ... why not use Oswald?
@@RubberyCat Mickey does have a rival---his name is Mortimer. I don't know how much he shows up nowadays, though. Pete would also sometimes fill that role.
@@paintingkitsune
Oh, the rat dude.
I had forgotten about him.
Hm, yes, he don't show up often, either.
.... As they do not seem fond of using Mortimer as a rival for Mickey much ... they could make use of Oswald vs Mortimer, and ... yes...
I think that would work well.
what're you guys talking about? Mickey is clearly the rat, since Disney is kinda greedy lol
Mortimer Mouse is Mickey Mouse's rival, although he has not been used by Walt Disney Productions for many years. Pete The Wolf/Cat/Bear is just too good of a villain, so Mortimer Mouse is not really needed.
I consider myself an Oswald fan, but I had no idea about his whole other life as a realistic looking rabbit. That really felt like an entirely different character.
gee who would have thought a character seldom used wouldn't become popular?
Someone I mean, I always liked him a lot
Hey to be fair, other characters from different franchises were under utilized and yet their popularity still shined through. Pit from Nintendo Kid Icarus comes to mind, though his appearance in smash bros does help a bit I guess lol
There are dozens of fans. DOZENS!
I hear he's really popular in Japan and even has his own fashion line there.
That's because of Universal Studios made him bland and wimpy looking.
In defence of the animators, they didn't betray Walt, they left due to Walt Disney studio(disney brothers studio at the time) financial struggle which made them unable to repay their animators, oh and Fun fact, Walt didn't have any grudge against any of the animators or Charles mint, he forgave them and considered bygones as bygones. Besides another well made video, thanks
Bugs would be the one to steal the popularity of Oswald
@TGDS NO the name of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were taken by Leon in 1933, during which the Schingieser studio hire animatiors from other studios with Warner's funding to make his cartoons after Harman-Ising left, it was Leon who defined Looney Tunes like how Disney defined Mickey Mouse, it was Harman-Ising that left which shaped Looney Tunes after the 3-color debacle that was bad in 1933. Harman-Ising created Looney Tunes and have their own studio after they left Winkler's studio which ironically stole Oswald Rabbit, It was WB's and Leon's givings that made Looney Tunes
The IRONY is that ANOTHER Walter brought the rights of Oswald from Greedy Ass Mintz. Walter Lanz. Aka Creator of Woody Woodpecker!
I can’t believe some people only know him as “that guy from fnf”
Wait he isnt just that guy from fnf?
I reconized him from clips of the older cartoons, and even though he has a mod, the mod might have been an attempt to help out other people come back to the older cartoons of him, possibly increasing is popularity. I love is older design, though. The fnf fans who know him from there arent mislead, possibly just focusing on the game instead. (Sorry to pull out the response)
You actually get what I mean?
I did hear rumors about Oswald getting his own series exclusive to the Disney+ streaming service.
Yep they is a rumor that Oswald will have his show in November 12th 2019
If it could be based in the world of epic mickey my brain would explode

Toga Himiko Welcome to 2020 LIAR
Oswald is actually pretty popular in the Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea parks, lots of merchandise for him there! His simple design and aesthetic make him a fantastic mascot to put on merch, not to mention his mischievious personality.
nautical I'm an American and Latin and I'm so jealous of Japan, why do Japanese have all the fun?!
Valerie Vargas I know right. Anime as well
Charles Mintz? Did he end up looking for a rare bird species in Paradise Falls?
DBulldog who do you think the character was based on?
@@froggod4504 was about to say this
Charles Muntz is based off of Charles Mintz, seems nice, is ultimately a bad guy. He also tries to steal Kevin (Oswald).
The real Charles Mintz eventually released shorts (namely Krazy Kat Scrappy not Scooby Doo's nephew by the way and Color Rhapsody) for Columbia before said studio took over and renamed it Screen Gems. Mintz died in 1939. As for Screen Gems it closed in 1946 before the name was brought be for television until 1974 then since 1999 the name was brought back again as a specialty feature film studio.
Woody woodpecker?
Oswalds history makes me so sad. He deserves so much more love
No literally, I was thinking the exact same
I'd love to see Oswald get some screentime with Horace as his buddy. Those two characters would fit so well together.
I would love to see that as well since they did get along in Epic Mickey. Some Oswald fans on Twitter have been wondering if Horace would complete a trio of friends after finding out about Toby Bear another friend of Oswald's from his old shorts that was added to the comic.
8:40 I had no idea that 3 of the original creators of Looney Tunes were originally some of Disney’s original animators!
Yep! This is exactly why when WB started with cartoons, many characters they started with had similar looks. From Bosko's Looney Tunes to Foxy and Piggy in the Merrie Melodies, they all seemed to emulate the look that Oswald and Mickey had...with good reason.
It's not so much ripping off a style when you think about it, more like learning the style from working under a previous teacher.
Animators would often switch studios, back in the day; for instance, many went to Disney at lower pay scales, to learn to be better animators, then would rejoin their old studios!
Oswald would be great if they brought him back with a stronger personality. I'm thinking something like Milo Murphy from Milo Murphy's Law. He is a lucky rabbit after all, but they could play with it being both good and bad luck; seeing him getting into catastrophic messes but always getting out just in time while remaining "Peppy, alert, saucy, venturesome, neat, and trim."
Or they should just keep him the same as he was in his original 27 cartoons instead of copying another character's schtick.
@@d.j.w2600 The problem is, in his original 27 cartoons he was a carbon copy of Mickey (or rather, Mickey was a carbon copy of Oswald). They need to find a way to make him stand out and fit him into the existing Disney lineup.
@@SquirrellyFries Or do nothing to him, as Mickey's abandoned being an all rounded character to just being a tenderfoot.
It's our boy, HumanName, the animal!
Man Oswald in KH3 wouldve been great
Sadly, he didn't appear.😔
*we need a magic brush (paint and thinner) key blade too*
An entire world based on tue land of forgotten toons from epic mickey would have been really cool
Oswald:you took everything from me!
Mickey:I don't know even who you are.
Bizarrely enough, I think from a business standpoint the best way to get Oswald back in the picture would be to make him a recurring character in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Roadster Racer shows since those are pretty popular with little kids and would have him familiarized as part of the group so that growing up they might never realize he wasn't always there. That age group is also one of the biggest fans for the classic Disney gang.
You should do Felix the cat 😂 since he's turning 100 in November 9

I think one thing Disney would need to do to use Oswald more is to give him a more modern and more Disney design as to fit more in with his fellow characters, along with a personality distinct enough from other Disney stables and the other famous cartoon rabbit to be able to stand out on his own.
Exactly.
I think Oswald went through enough redesigns for his life time, he should stick with his Classic design
E Man You mean a cream colored face with bigger eyes, gloves, shoes and buttons on the shorts like Mickey?
Oswald I see as an ego maniac he wants attention and wants to be loved and will do anything to get it
Valerie Vargas more of just gloves and maybe shoes, he can keep a white face as a part of his design since I think it works
If my memory serves, Oswald also served as somewhat of a rival to Mickey in Epic Mickey . At least in the early portions. He was jealous towards Mickey for taking the spotlight from him while he was basically forgotten.
I loved Oswald in the Epic Mickey games. Frank Welker was the perfect choice for his voice. I hope Disney utilizes him more in the future.
I just love how a good chunk of his changes were making him a bit shorter and more *rounded*

He needs a modern redesign like Mickey got! That'll make him popular again, I think.

I don’t care how long it takes I’m gonna be waiting Disney Make it Happen
I like his classic design with the 30's antics the best
Nah he looks fine.
@TGDS they would have to make him different from Mickey.
And a few days ago, Oswald finally got a new short!
I wonder how Walt Disney would feel about Oswald being back at Disney and more importantly how would Walter Lantz feel about Oswald not being owned by Universal anymore
Walter Lantz never really cared all that much for the character, which after all, was forced on him
Plus he did ask Disney if it was ok to continue the shorts and Disney didn't mind. So yeah I would imagine that Lantz would probably be happy that Oswald returned home. Sure he helped develop the character but he never really owned Oswald at the time either. Though the characters he later created was owned by Lantz til he sold the studio to Universal.
Disney got their revenge
Now Disney is a super company
I personally fell in love with the character in the first epic Mickey game what a story very underrated game
16:28 oswald smug dancing is not something my eyes were ready for
Oswald is a wonderful character and I love him to death! But, I recently realized that I don't think Oswald would be quite as famous or loveable if he wasn't forgotten.
I wish theyre was a movie and oswald burts into mickeys house and tells hom everything and then they have some brother bonding time
Nooo! Oswald is my favorite! I hope i will see him in a movie or in a game again! I played with the Epic Mickey 1, 2, and i love that game! 💙
Guess what Disney Plus is making Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon series coming soon
Another Oswald fan!!! I have no idea how but I got so attached to this Oswald man, but I can and will cry over him. 💖💖
Anyone else came back here after Disney's 100 anniversary special?
Seems like Oswald is still as lucky and remembered as ever.
Oh heck yes! Keep spreading the word about Oswald! He deserves to be remembered!
No matter what, I’m not gonna give up on Oswald. He still has an enriched fanbase who desperately want to see him on the big screen. Not only that but there are rumors that Disney may be developing an Oswald cartoon series for their streaming service.
Iger did hint that they were planning something for Oswald during D23 in 2017
mannystella I'm not giving up convincing everyone to be open minded to get together to support Oswald having a comeback for he's a very underrated character that deserves better and yet others say the idea is getting old and annoying but yet there are other things that are extremely overrated that already annoyed the heck outta me like Finding Nemo is so overrated because seriously I've seen that everywhere I mean EVERYWHERE and everyone kept mentioning about like all the time plus even references on tv shows, which makes it more worn out that way so why not talk about Oswald for Pete's sake!
This video made me fall in love with Oswald again, thanks! Hoping he makes another comeback!
THERE HE IS! THE GOOD BOY!
Thank you for making a video about him. Even though I already know alot about him, I love watching videos about him.
and he is back, they released a new animated short of him today
I Had No Idea Oswald Was like the original Mickey mouse until the actual Character Came. And, I Didn't know he was jealous. He and Mickey are Seen Together in the Epic Mickey games.
I mean, I think it’s difficult to imagine Oswald gaining popularity when he isn’t used for anything but easter eggs and regionally-dictated shorts. Mickey Mouse is a legacy character who is only in a limited number of modern appearances, so if Disney was to attempt to put Oswald up in a similar rank to the Disney Trifecta (Mickey Donald Goofy), then they’d need to release substantial work starring him. It seems as though his acquisition was more for the two video games, as any potential interest in the character would’ve required a greater investment and perhaps endanger overshadowing Mickey. For now, he feels more like a progenitor than an equal-the one that came first but was surpassed in every way. His value is almost entirely sentimental for the company.
This might not be Disney, but you should Explain Felix The Cat.
Because hes turning 100 years old, and I feel that Cat deserves some sort of celebration.

Seriously though why is Wasteland not a world in Kingdom Hearts? Oswald could be there and it could be filled with Epic Mickey references, and King Mickey could comment on how oddly familiar the place is. It would be great yes?
Epic Mickey was joint venture between Disney and universal, square enix wouldn’t be able to get the rights for Oswald.
@@Spoogebro Really? I thought that only the Universal made Oswald shorts were still owned by Universal. The character himself, his Disney made appearances, and the rights to use him in future media were owned by Disney.
Jacob Spagnotti And to leave you needed a heart, which no one including Oswald had...so in KH terms everyone in Wasteland would actually be a Nobody. That could be interesting, as they aren’t bad guys. Unlike Heartless Nobodies fall into a more gray area. and a place like Wasteland would be a great place to explore that.
@@wingedmirage4226 Oh man i didn't even think about that! That'd be cool!
Actually Epic Mickey wasn't a joint venture between Universal and Disney. Universal completely gave up the rights to Use Oswald in 2006 for Al Michaels with Epic Mickey being made by Disney's Junction Point. Universal has even had to erase all references to Oswald in their parks worldwide. Disney currently owns Oswald himself, All Disney made Oswald films, the characters under his Disney IP (Ortensia, Toby Bear the bunny children, etc.) and the right to use him as well. However what some employees have said is that they don't know what to do with Oswald's character which was a problem that they had with Epic Mickey as well where Oswald's character was changed several times.
...wonder if we should bring up the brief period in the 2000's where oswald was loved in japan and also became blue

I’m glad to see a couple of classic Oswald shorts are on Disney plus, and they made a short new one recently
The FNF community: Fine. I'll do it myself.
If Disney make a series of him I really wish all the Universal universe never take it bc Fanny as his sister is weird it would be interesting introduce her as she always be as his ex and really hope they took Ortensia's family too c'mon Walt's universe of Oswald is pretty amazing and having this character back is really depressing no one cares about him.

Oswald didn’t deserve this, I’ve known about him for a while because of the Epic Mickey games and I always loved him. I hope that he has more stuff to come
Imagine if Oswald got the modern Disney character design treatment. That might help improve his chances of appearing in more shorts.
Well, so I think, that twisted winds design would be good.
I love your evolution videos Sooo much
Epic Mickey introduced me to Oswald. I loved him and i loved how meta they made they story
Yes I first knew of Oswald The Lucky Rabbit when I'd read The Art of Walt Disney back in 1978.Years later I came across a bigger version of this and also like this it's in hardcover too.If I had the time to both vacation and subscribe online then I'd help out with franchises of both Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Oswald Rabbit alike as well as to see them side by side too.
You and I both
Oh My God yes! Some love for Oswald!!!
I first discovered him from Epic Mickey but that lead to me watching his cartoons online and I love him. I hated those big head re-designs though, it looked ugly and that realistic bunny looking version was just.. too different..
Mickey was re-designed a bunch of times but you could always tell it was the same character.. Oswald looked best when he had the disney based design.
revisiting this video after Once Upon A Studio. we finally got to see him again!!!!!
"i doubt that his popularity will skyrocket once more"
the fnf community: *n o*
If they have Oswald just in cameos (and Epic Mickey was like 9 years ago), how were they hoping his popularity would skyrocket?
I hope they would use him more in the future, he’s really spunky and it’s sad to see his character just fade away again:/
Ozzy’s getting his own show on Disney+! I’m so excited! :D
Really?
@E . A this was 3 years ago, when that was still happening.
i am very sad it's cancelled, if that was ever truly announced.
@E . A Gosh, yeah.
That is why I LOVE Disney!! Nice Video!!!
