This was brilliant. Steven is a legend. We need more with him. How he just knows the ages, breeds and more just by looking at a fleece. Epic! Really glad you did this Cammy.
I'm 23 minutes in. This man needs his own documentary with interviews. The knowledge he has can't be replaced. 50 yrs from now this type of knowledge will be of research and museum quality.
I do agree. Being a tradeswoman, I have watched genius and expertise retire and fade, and not many people noticing. Shameful and heartbreaking. Let’s find a way to reverse this process!
I'm not so sure - in the last 4 or 5 years we've noticed more young people getting into all sectors of the wool industry compared to the 15 or 20 years before that. Classers (graders) are in demand in Australia and New Zealand so I don't think the expertise will die out any time soon. But I agree Steven definitely knows his stuff!!
I love the traceability aspect because I want to support the shepherds at the end of the day. Having said that, I have a new found respect for all the work that goes into processing and grading the wool.
I don't breed em, raise em, shear em, sell them and rarely wear wool. But I was captivated by this video and the interplay between you two. Keep showing what fascinates you and let your enthusiasm carry us along.
Cam mate seriously you should be an ambassador for British wool and wool products,I applaud you on your efforts to show the general public what goes on behind the door of the wool industry 👏 keep up the good work mate top top videos 📹 pal
Wool is an amazing fabric. I hope the producers will soon get corrected value for their product. I agree about Sandi's wool. As a member of her community, I support her wool products because it comes from her sheep.
I foolishly thought a fleece was a fleece, with only small differences. Boy, was I wrong. What an education! Thanks for taking of your time to educate us on the wool industry.
Love Steven, so educated and was quite able to transfer his knowledge of the wool to those listening 👂. My jaw fell open just listening to his lecture. I wish he would set a camera to record himself sorting and listening to him talking about it, as he sorted. I could listen to Steven all day. He is one of a kind. What a crown jewel 💎 he is. TU
This was terrific! Stephen is amazing.... I can share that as knitter along with friends and podcasters I watch we have done everything we can to buy wool during the pandemic and even now. There was a time that producers and dyers had difficulty getting yarn/fiber... As I learn more about different sheep types I "collect" breed specific yarn and try to buy direct from farms or mills. I am in the process of changing out any "plastic" type yarn materials for wool and natural fiber. We just got wool pillows in cotton covers and it is fantastic to sleep upon. Oh well, I am rambling on but everything about sheep to fleece I find fascinating. Thank you so much for sharing this information.
What a fantastic video, I’m sure we used to have a wool marketing board in my town. Steven was one of the best contributor I’ve ever heard on You tube. He never missed a beat. I hope he gets a decent salary!! Thank you.
Oh wow, I don't even know where to start! What a brilliant video. Super interesting to hear Steven talk. You are totally right, Cammie, the man needs his own channel! I could watch and listen to him for ever. Such a wealth of knowledge! Would love learning more about how he can tell the quality, age of the sheep and which breed! I am one of those knitters and spinners that was asking to buy the wool from the islands. I am so glad the Woolboard is picking up that the story behind the sheep and where they came from is important. If we want more people to buy wool, we need to create a connection to the place, the farmers and the animals that worked to produce that wool. The story makes the wool so much more valuable.
Replacing these gentleman will be a big job. The training needs to start now. This knowledge isn’t learned in a year. They are ALL absolutely amazing. This is even more informative than the last vlog you did like this. Well done 👍🏻 *edited for spelling
Every time you find a master of their craft and you interview them, or work with them, you not only learn new skills for yourself, but you excite us and make us wish we were there with you. Thank you so much for sharing your curiosity and enthusiasm with us.
Thank you, Stephen! I agree with Cammy. Could listen to and watch you for hours! Your knowledge and confidence is palpable. (I like your smile too). Thanks for taking the time to talk with us (and to your bosses for allowing it).
Habs, wasn't his smile beautiful? It showed he was really enjoying his interview, had an inner joy for life and especially his craft! I noticed his hands--not a wrinkle or age spot, looked soft and young, yet he was a hard working master craftsman! Cammy that was an award winning documentary and deserves recognition!
I’m so looking forward to the next one. There are so many applications for wool, even insulation for the building trade. I’m a knitter and have just bought a Tunisian knitting needle, something new to have a go at. It’ll only knit British wool though. 😁. PS Steve was brilliant, I bet he has soft hands
Thanks so much for posting videos like this! As a crafter and now lover of all things sheep, due to you and Sandi’s channels … I find everything fascinating and gives me such an appreciation for my yarn!❤
Probably your most informative video to date, can’t wait for the next one on processing. the Wool Marketing board need to hire you to make a video “From Tup to mattress topper, the story of wool in 2022”
This was terrific! Thank to all these people sharing their expertise and giving us a glimpse of the workings behind the scenes, I’d never known about. Thanks so much Cam for arranging/interviewing -Great job, very educational!!
Wow! This was amazing! Can’t wait to see the next one! You are spot on about people wanting traceability for things they buy. Kudos to mentioning Sandy Brock’s wool items - those of us who follow her channel, bought up ALL the items so fast I don’t think they lasted in stock for 15 minutes! And all because we watched those particular sheep be born, grow up, be sheared , and all the steps in their lives. I get the same sort of impression for Tom Pemberton’s farm store, selling milk from the cows we watch having a good scratch on their cow brushes, or from the Angus beef we’ve watched grow to market size. You are spot on, that the LEGENDS who explained their wool grading, sorting, and auctioning, have tons of fascinating info to share!
Bloody Brilliant Cammy!! The content of the video, and the knowledge in that 40 minutes , you can't beat it. It would probably surprise a lot of people and would be really interesting to know just how many "man" hours are involved from when you start with your shears to a finished fleece being used either for carpets, knitting, tweed, etc, etc. The traceability factor is good, surely the only way to really promote Britain and British products. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank YOU, Cammy, for a super video. I love "factory" tours where one gets to go behind the scenes. You've shown us markets and the wool board. Craigie Boy showed you and The Hoof GP making a TV show. Graeme shows us dairy barn setups. Love them all. Looking forward to part two. Thanks for the shout-out to Sandi Brock. She showed us her wool being processed small scale. British Wool will be big time!
I love watching Sandy's videos! That's what drew me to this one, as she has just started to market her wool. Brings back old memories for me of learning to card n spin using a drop spindle
This was fantastic! I would never have known about this process, but for this video. Steve is amazing! His knowledge and expertise is a joy to watch. Makes you wonder if the next generation of sorters will be so in the know.
Oh my goodness this was super interesting and I learned so much. I had absolutely no idea that a fleece would tell so much about the sheep it came from. I vaguely knew it was graded just like meat and grain is but it a lot more interesting than either of those! Another reason consumers like to know where wool comes from is a rejection of the whole modern stamp press of manufacturing. If you know where the wool came from it ties you back to the land and all the people involved. It’s not just another carpet made from oil by a machine monitored by someone who may hate their job and/or live a miserable life because we the consumer isn’t paying enough for workers to make a living wage. The carpet becomes in some way almost an artist item just because we know where the wool is from.
This is one of your best videos yet. Knowledge and years experience these gentlemen have was unreal and to think you have to go to school to grade wool. WOW!
I love learning all the different steps that the wool goes through. Stephen, he us a Rock Star! Amazing that no matter how busy they all were they took time to answer snd were all so pleasant. Love these kinds of videos too Cammy, you are just spreading your wings and flying everywhere... I love that. Miss seeing Lizzy and Jock. Hey maybe you could get your Mother to do a typical meal cooking video for us. Just something I'd enjoy also. How are the puppies 🐶?
What a great idea if Mum would be willing! I had a (male) Scottish tour guide years ago who made pancakes for us. Simple but we loved it. Later had contact with his Mum about what a good boy he was. 😻 Remember that she lived in "The Shambles".
Greetings from Nova Scotia canada. Enjoy your channel, and as a knitter found this episode very informative. You have an excellent way of educating your viewers. I love wool, find it comfortable to wear and warm in cold Winters. I hope one day to be able to knit a sweater in pure wool, however the price is prohibitive. Your videos have shed some light on why this is so and I shall continue to dream.
Cammy WHAT A SUPER FANTASTIC VIDEO. Compliments to you as host.....but massive respect to Steven(Stephen). Richard and Billy from the British Wool Marketing Board.....REALLY REALLY fabulous to see where your fleeces go to when they leave your farms!!!! Absolutely knock out Video!!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
That was super cool!! I bought some of Sandi Brock's yarn solely because I knew the story behind it so knowing the origin is a great way to get people more interested in the product. The hat I am going to make with the yarn is going to be even more special to me than the hats I make with generic yarn because I got to see the whole story of how the yarn was transformed from a fleece to yarn.
I could listen to steven all day it's not just his knowledge but the delivery I was absolutely entranced! It's also why I watch cammy the excitement and knowledge is addictive!
Wow Cammie this video was so interesting, this gentleman was an incredible teacher and it was also wonderful to see the depth of your knowledge as well. Brilliant 👍🥰
All I ever knew about was the end product in a cake of yarn. This was really interesting. Thank you and the British wool industry for doing this video.
Great video Cammy and a fantastic insight in to what happens with the fleece once it leaves the farm. Really looking forward to the next video on this. 👍
So fascinating. I loved seeing all that goes into it. As a spinner, I knew quite a bit but this just opened it up all the more. Thanks for a great video!
So true Deerheart! No robot or computer can do what he does or accumulate the knowledge and history! Yeah for Steven, a true master craftsman who deserves an award!
I absolutely loved this video. So many fascinating aspects to wool. I also love the idea of knowing the story of the wool. I’m very big on buying local products. I research the products I buy so I know what the company is about.
That was fabulous! As a small potatoes spinner of fibre, it was so interesting and seeing that a guy like Richard Hewson can come in a help make a few changes that helps the farmer get more for their fleeces was terrific. I'd volunteer to bring my wheel and my chair and sit and keep Steven company any day! I'm amazed that he can determine the rough age of a sheep from just looking at it's fleece. This is the first Sheep Game video that I have watched and I hope to watch many more.
Ah Cammy, this was a tremendous video! All of the information (you need to buy Stephen a pint for that amazing explanation) was so incredible to learn. Thank you so much, and looking forward to the next video already. 👍👏👏👏👏
What a fantastic vlog. For many decades we have supplied the Woolboard with their grading Skeps (Vats as you called them) & worked closely with them as times have changed, long may this great tradition continue!!
Stephen's knowledge and experience along side your enthusiasm, there's at least another 30 vlogs just waiting I hope Stephen is training and encouraging the next generation of woolboard employees Such an ambassador for the industry You would both make great teachers, your love for the product is infectious Thank you Cammy and thanks to the marketing board for allowing you to publish the processes Take care Geoff
Thank you Stephen, for grading the best fiber out for us spinners! Nothing better than Grade 1. I loved your expertise and longevity in what has to be a physically demanding career.
Great video Cammy. Saw the 40 minute length and almost didn't start it. Glad I did. Steven being able to grab a fleece and tell breed and age was sure impressive. Sure hope they're right about the price going up. Would like to at least cover the shearing cost!
Hugely worthwhile and informative video. I wouldn’t have known where to even start researching this product. You’re handing over goldmines of detailed knowledge. Something that glossy mainstream TV misses in their endeavour to please ‘the public’.
I am a wool classer in America. I absolutely LOVE THIS. our wool is no where near the quality of the wool Steven is looking at but I am proud of the fact that I use some of the same techniques.
This was amazing. I learned so much. So much respect for the whole process. I’m a hand knitter and the BFL wool has so much more meaningful now! Thank you!
I’ve just found this video… as a sheep owner of a mixed flock and a user of wool for my peg loom I’ve loved this video…!!! What a deep lesson about wool.
Fabulous video Cammy. Last year I bought wool mattress toppers and a wool duvet from The Woolroom it's an excellent quality product with traceability on each product.
What an enlightening video. As you said, could watch Stephen all day long. Had no idea the apprenticeship/college required for grading wool. And his ability to tell the age and breed of the sheep just by examining the wool, simply amazing, the man's a living encyclopedia on wool. Thanks for going out of your way to make such an interesting video, Cammy.
And thank you, British Wool, for welcoming the tour! 🏆
Can we all agree that cammy is the best youtuber?😂
Absolutely. His field trips are epic! So looking forward to this one!
Yes! But don’t tell everyone. Let’s keep him to ourselves! 😉
He is good ...nearly as good as Sandi Brock.
Aye!👍🍻
Agreed
This was brilliant. Steven is a legend. We need more with him. How he just knows the ages, breeds and more just by looking at a fleece. Epic! Really glad you did this Cammy.
I'm 23 minutes in. This man needs his own documentary with interviews. The knowledge he has can't be replaced. 50 yrs from now this type of knowledge will be of research and museum quality.
100% Robert!! He was brilliant!
Dang near everyone Cammy talked has been in the business for 40+ years
A knitter always appreciates how much work and love goes into a wonderful wool yarn. Thank you!
I love the traceability aspect because I want to support the shepherds at the end of the day. Having said that, I have a new found respect for all the work that goes into processing and grading the wool.
The man ( Steven ) who could tell breed age etc of the wool was amazing. Could watch and listen to him all night.
As someone who washes fleeces and spins wool seeing a warehouse of fleeces. Is just dazzling.
Could watch the wool grading for hours this guy is fasinating and knows his stuff
I didn't realise the training they go through either 😯
I don't breed em, raise em, shear em, sell them and rarely wear wool. But I was captivated by this video and the interplay between you two. Keep showing what fascinates you and let your enthusiasm carry us along.
Thanks Sharyn!! I learned so much!
Weii said! I love listening to such well spoken experts.
Wow! Cammy, you're telling an important story with this video. Thanks so much for educating us.
I foolishly thought a fleece was a fleece, with only small differences. Boy, was I wrong. What an education! Thanks for taking of your time to educate us on the wool industry.
Its fascinating just how varied wool can be!!
TU
Very interesting! How kind of the Wool House to let you in to do this and Steven was a rock star! Can’t wait to see the next video

Imagine being able to tell the age of the sheep just looking at the fleece another guid video 👍
Yes that is quite a skill!!
Absolutely loved all the explanations Steve gave...and yes Steve should start a youtube channel on wool sorting!!

This was fantastic! I would never have known about this process, but for this video. Steve is amazing! His knowledge and expertise is a joy to watch. Makes you wonder if the next generation of sorters will be so in the know.
I SO love that you know who Sandy Brock is! She is the Sheep Queen lol
Stephen!!! WOW so much knowledge!!! Thank you. Excellent Video thank you.
Absolutely fascinating. I hope the knitters share this video in their community. What an education.
That was a comprehensive video. Worth saving for future reference. Cammy, well done and nice touch with the kids at the end!

This was amazing! Thanks to everyone at the British Wool Board for sharing so much :-) Love their new ideas, I can see they have a lot to offer!
Absolutely amazing. That guy can tell the age what kind it is. That’s pure experience. Thank you for this that was amazing
I loved this video. It was so interesting to see what happens to the wool and the journey it goes on. Thank you for sharing!
Stephen is an absolute legend. I found what he had to say fasinating aand im not even sheep farming, my background is in dairy farming
All I ever knew about was the end product in a cake of yarn. This was really interesting. Thank you and the British wool industry for doing this video.
Thanks Steven really like the how easily you explain some of the different wool grades.
Great video Cammy and a fantastic insight in to what happens with the fleece once it leaves the farm.
Really looking forward to the next video on this. 👍
Wool Staff brilliant very clever skilful staff. Well done Cammy highlighting this industry. Learning so much, love sheep. 🐑🐏🐑🐏👍
This man is a wool encyclopedia! Entirely fascinating.
So fascinating. I loved seeing all that goes into it. As a spinner, I knew quite a bit but this just opened it up all the more. Thanks for a great video!
That Steven should be on UA-cam sharing and explaining what he does. He'll be a hit like the hoof GP guy.
So informative , and Steven is just amazing to listen to ! I know Sandi from Sheepishly Me would get a kick out of him too! Thanks for posting.👍❤️
Steven is terrific and so highly skilled! No machine can do what he does! 🦌💌❤️🐑
So true Deerheart! No robot or computer can do what he does or accumulate the knowledge and history! Yeah for Steven, a true master craftsman who deserves an award!
Herdies are my favourite sheep ever!!! Gorgeous smiley sheep.
I absolutely loved this video. So many fascinating aspects to wool. I also love the idea of knowing the story of the wool. I’m very big on buying local products. I research the products I buy so I know what the company is about.
Stephens knowledge is unreal and I could watch him all day as well
Great video cammy
That was great! When I watched the shearing videos I have wondered about all these things: grading, sorting, fibres, selling, etc.
Thanks Cammy. 👍👍😁❤️
Leaving my like and comment for Steven. What knowledge. Great, great insight. Thank you 👌👌👌👌
So much fun to listen to some one who enjoys and knows the profession. What an apprenticeship is involved 🤓
This is absolutely fascinating.
Excited to see the next stage! Love the cleaning and whatnot getting it ready for buyers :)
Billy Thank you for bringing in The Sheep Game! So informative.
Great video Cammy, really interesting to see another side to the sheep industry.
You have created another fine historical documentation! Brilliant work! You are the man!
What a fantastic vlog. For many decades we have supplied the Woolboard with their grading Skeps (Vats as you called them) & worked closely with them as times have changed, long may this great tradition continue!!
Wow that was a great video! Am sure my fellow spinners will be fascinated.
Hey got that pink shirt, thank you! 🙂
One of dad’s talents he was a master dyer He had a love of good wool This is cool❤
Stephen's knowledge and experience along side your enthusiasm, there's at least another 30 vlogs just waiting
I hope Stephen is training and encouraging the next generation of woolboard employees
Such an ambassador for the industry
You would both make great teachers, your love for the product is infectious
Thank you Cammy and thanks to the marketing board for allowing you to publish the processes
Take care
Geoff
I found this VIDEO SO FASCINATING like you Cammy I could listen to Steven hour after hour what a Great Fella and also Billy was great xx
Really lovely to hear you talking about how great British wool is! British wool is amazing. I love trying out all the different breeds ☺ 🐑 💕
That was very interesting and Steven is very Informative and a merit to his Craft and Art! Thank You.🤗
Thank you Stephen, for grading the best fiber out for us spinners! Nothing better than Grade 1. I loved your expertise and longevity in what has to be a physically demanding career.
Love this. Good information. Sad about the sheep reduction. Wool heaven. Wish I could work there! Thanks Cammy!
Great video Cammy. Saw the 40 minute length and almost didn't start it. Glad I did. Steven being able to grab a fleece and tell breed and age was sure impressive. Sure hope they're right about the price going up. Would like to at least cover the shearing cost!
This man's knowledge is incredible! So impressive he can tell type and age of sheep by the wool.
Two thumbs up. As a handspinner in the US, the heritage of UK wool industry is just fascinating. Can't wait to see the next video featuring the mill
I love these kind of behind the scenes educational videos! The everyday and seasonal are great but these take the process so much further.
Hugely worthwhile and informative video. I wouldn’t have known where to even start researching this product. You’re handing over goldmines of detailed knowledge. Something that glossy mainstream TV misses in their endeavour to please ‘the public’.
I definitely agree with you that I could listen to these professionals talk about the wool forever
Thank you!
Steven is amazing. What a gem of a man chock full of knowledge.
Brilliant! I must get myself one!
The wool mattress toppers are brilliant. Love mine.
Steven's depth of knowledge really shined in this video, as well as his ability to explain it very well. The whole video is so interesting!
Fascinating video. As a knitter I’m really looking forward to the next part too! It’s lovely that you mentioned Sandy as I’m a great fan of hers.
Your right it is fascinating learning about the different qualities of wool. Good job.
