Also if the aircraft fills up with water, you would have to swim down to get out. Would be very hard to do if it was inflated. Thanks for sharing as always your videos are great.
Looks like pulling the right string to inflate the chamber closest to your chest is important too, if you inflate the top chamber 1st it's going to choke you out maybe even with the inner chamber uninflated. Hopefully we will never need to find out. Good video Shaun!
Nice job of showing how the life vest works Shaun. Let’s hope they change the design sometime in the future. You brought up a good point. No one was wearing a vest that was standing on the wing on the plane that went down on the Hudson. Sometimes in all the commotion important things get missed
Excellent demonstration. I think another point about not inflating before escaping is that it may be too large to get thru openings and thus become a roadblock for the people behind you to get out especially if there is water in the cabin. Hopefully you never have to use it but you want to get it right first time.
Great video Shaun. I used to have to maintain the lifejackets on a few of my ships while in the navy. It was always fun getting to demo the out of date jackets.
This is the demonstration on every airline that. Basically most everyone never pays mind too when a flight att does there speech prior to departing. Great job Shaun 🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🏼
Another great video. I can’t believe the FAA doesn’t make the airlines or aircraft manufactures have a similar video available on line or available on their entertainment systems. They should also take it one step further and show you exactly where the life vest is located in their video.
Depending on when you filmed this... I can just imagine the neighbors looking on and thinking “that’s his plan for dealing with the hurricane?!?!” 🤦♂️ Looks like the expired units might find a second life as inflatable travel pillows. 💡😁
Concrete shoes?!?! Too funny. Seriously though, this vlog should be played on every pre-flight brief in the U.S. It's great your channel informs as well as educates!!
Great passenger safety video. Maybe you should develop a series for passengers in your new capacity at Alerion. Email them a link to the info video. Maybe include your raft training, maybe even smoke and fire in flight.
Awesome content as always! Kinda wish you'd shown us how you got it off though.... But surprisingly quite different to what I remember being shown in the safety videos, so great to see one inflated, thankfully not in an emergency
Fantastic Video. As already stated airlines should show this video so that everyone understands why not to inflate before exiting the plan and what it looks look on after inflation. Thanks
This was great, Shaun! Man, that thing really puffs up! Not good if you've got claustrophobia! 😬 First time I've ever seen this done. I don't fly much! 3x commercially in my 46 years on the planet. I always had air rifles that pumped up. Never had one with the CO2 cartridge. I have had emergency tire kits for off-roading that had the canister, though. 👍 I think more people will learn from this video than on any flight, just because of rushing around, trying to get to your destination, and NOT miss the plane - the minute you sit down, the brain goes into RELAX mode, and some might not really hear what the flight attendant is really saying. They may be listening ... but not HEARING. Good stuff, man! I expect this one to get a BIG view count with time. 🍻😎
@@CorporatePilotLife -You're very welcome! I'm new to making vids on UA-cam, so I don't mean to insult you with a tip ... but I think if you take the current title, move it to the video description (below the Skillshare link), and change the main video title to: "Inflating a commercial airline life vest", you'll maximize your view count. $$$ 😉🍻
Food for thought: by certification crew vests have two chambers, passengers vests only one. Second, should you be in a situation where you need to swim away from the aircraft or raft to retrieve someone it is very hard to do in an inflated vest. Recommend, as a crew member, to put some air in the vest using the manual tubes. Should you become fatigued while swimming or have someone panic and climb on you, you will still have your auto-inflation cartridges to assist you. All the best.
How do you ditch it? Undo the buckle, obviously, but it looks like it's too tight to fit over your head, at least with both chambers inflated. I suppose that being hard to ditch is a feature.
Will skillshare teach me how to land without having to fan ("bobble") the yoke? Oh wait ... that would be a great video -- your technique for landing. Do you "fan" the yoke? If not, how long did it take you to get the timing just right? Any tips, suggestions, wise observations that come with years of experience?
I'm curious about safety as it relates to the undercarriage. Is there some sort of lockout that prevents the gear from being raised while landing or standing? Maybe some sort of cam lobe that prevents gear movement while under load?
Normally referred to as the "squat switch" switches on the landing gear not only prevent the gear from being activated while under load, but dump the cabin air pressure as well. Some aircraft also use them to inhibit the use of thrust reversers and lift inhibiting devices.
Very informative and useful tech video. Did you see the recent story about shortage of corporate pilots? They estimate 98,000 new business pilots will be needed between now and 2038 to meet demand.
Very excellent video on those thing we've seen flight attendants talk about so many times. BTW, Shaun couldn't make any flights for the last three weeks cause he was mowing that gigantic lawn.
Shaun, I wonder if the average pax would be better served by pulling both actuators so that their head is held above water, not able to roll side on to waves, etc? Plus, since most seem to want to exit a wreck with their baggage, the added buoyancy would help in that &^%$ effort? :-).
I can’t remember the specific airline, but I recall there was an Asian airliner that went down and many perished because they couldn’t exit the aircraft as it filled with water because they did inflate life vests inside the cabin.
That is the one I always think of, pretty sure the plane ended up inverted as well and everyone who had inflated there vests couldn't get out as you said. I never thought about the potential for ripping it but being trapped with it on seems like a significantly worst scenario.
They screwed up with the tubes for blowing more air in, one should have been bigger for the bottom one at least, maybe both. But the bottom one for sure.
One of my tenants gave me a couple expired units. I talked my son into putting one on, slid my hands down and pulled. Funny stuff...but I guess you had to be there. Ended up piercing both with a knife to help get it off.
Shaun, cool video but one thing, how do you deflate them after? The debrief shows how to inflate but no one shows how to deflate. Can you deflate the second chamber alone do it's not so bulbus around your head? Or even deflate it half way?
What happened to the flight videos? Tech Tuesday is cool. But I enjoy the flight videos and there seems to be less of them now that you're with the new company.
I have one on deck...should be out tomorrow. Things have been pretty crazy lately, but I'm getting back on it. That was fun for a demonstration but to have to do it in a real emergency . . . not as much . . . or maybe MORE (in a stress-relief kind of way).
When you inflated the 2nd one it reminded of Chris Farley in Tommy Boy 🤣
LOL...fat guy in a little coat...he was hilarious
That movie was great. Loved his opening the door scene after he got to school late. .
Tragic loss it was when he passed. Still an all time fav.

The second one is there to support your head so your mouth and nose are kept out of the water.that's why it folds in toward your head.
how did you get it off?
Very carefully...LOL. It has a deflation valve that I will show when I go swimming
