  • In this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Adam Yamaguchi meets with pilot and inventor Blair White to learn how he adapted the airplane evacuation slide to be used on buildings with up to four stories.
With his company Slide to Safety, White's goal is to make building evacuation quicker and more efficient for those trapped taller buildings. On airplanes, the evacuation slide takes about 90 seconds to inflate; the Slide to Safety inflates much faster, taking under 6 seconds. And unlike a car's airbags, the Slide to Safety can be deployed multiple times.
The key to such rapid inflation is a similar concept used in safety slides on airplanes: compressed air flows through an aspirator, and valves open to pull in ambient air.

@The Henry Ford (1:37), incorrect! The FAA requires evacuation slides to be "ready for use" in 15 seconds or less. You have confused time requirements with aircraft certification standards. The FAA requires aircraft cabins to be able to be evacuated in 90 seconds (or less) with half of the exits blocked.

The only problem with this is the high cost, an aircraft escape slide brand new costs around $250,000 amd can be up to $750,000 and they require a $10,000 maintinece every 3 years. They are very costly to maintain and are extremely dangerous.

So frustrating the wrong information. An aircraft evacuation slide has to deploy in 6 seconds, not the 90 seconds stated in this video. The aircraft needs to be evacuated in 90 seconds, but the slide deploys within 6 seconds. From FAR 25.810: Except for assisting means installed at Type C exits, it must be automatically erected within 6 seconds after deployment is begun. Assisting means installed at Type C exits must be automatically erected within 10 seconds from the time the opening means of the exit is actuated.
