    Had a similar issues... I opened up the control unit and it was humid... cleaned it, impregnated, re-sealed and they are working fine as we speak. Damn Bosch and VW for not producing these anomore!!! What a shame.

    It's ridiculous these days that a wiper motor needs that much technology to turn it on!! Nice job with the vid

    Another good video. I really like videos like this because it's how we DIY guys have to work in our driveways. We don't always have every tool we need and, often, we don't even have all the info we would like to have. Like you said, Will, we just have to do the best we can with what we have. Keep up the good work!

    Great diagnosis! Essentially you covered enough to make the call. Seeing a good can bus signal, loaded power and ground is enough for me to call the component. Nice work Will! 💪

    Bosch has had a huge problem with water intrusion in a lot of their modules in the past several years. We've been finding it in GM, Chrysler, Subaru, and several. We've replaced numerous wiper motors and FPCM's on GM's this past month. They have got to do something with their quality control. Nice job with the diag. You really only have to see movement on the Bus lines most of the time unless you dealing with one of the new Fords.

      thank you for the feed back, its good to hear from fellow techs. one thing i did notice while tearing apart is how it lacks two retaining clips that hold the module to the housing. i point this out somewhat in part two. even the reman came in the same way so i looked closer it almost seems as though the module has an imperfection in two of the retaining clip slots so they left them out, the motor housing appears to be right. just seemed odd. thanks again

    Nice job as usual, Will. Had a VW not long ago with inop wipers and it was a bad hood latch switch. I got lucky and found the problem without a lot of testing.

      wysetech2000 yup it's one of those interlocks, I had one as well awhile back, the hood indicator on the dash display made it easier for me on that one but I heard sometimes that's not so, I may have been fortunate in that case. thank you for the feedback it's always great hearing from you

      Just two parallel lines with modules wired in parallel with their own unique address communicating with the BCM and inputs such as the wiper switch ! Look at it this way, Me- I want the wipers on, Me turn switch, BCM- OK, BCM- HEY wiper module you home, Wiper module- Yea I'm home, BCM- Wiper module turn wipers on it's raining, Wiper module- OK ! LOL ! What ever happened to turn the wiper switch on ? LOL !

    Regardless of the complexity involved, I am surprised that nobody commented on the fact that the reason it blew up is because VW/Bosch could not make a rain wiper motor assembly rain-proof! If you think about it, it was NOT the technology which was the culprit here but the lack of good old fashioned basic manufacturing. Germans are famous for having water intrusion in the trunk where lots of expensive electronics are housed at the bottom of the trunk. Some of the roof drains get separated and end up dumping all the water right on the module(s).

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  7 років тому

      12vgs8606 very true thanks for bringing this up I try to stay neutral. I truly do see the benefits of the new technology but also understand their points. you bring up a very good point and to be honest most times that I see a failure is do to water intrusion, as you mentioned mostly Bosch manufacturing. not the fault of the technology housed inside. solid stable system otherwise

  • @ManicMechanic007

    Way too complicated for a simple wiper motor. With all of this technology thrown at the simplest of mechanisms, I still can't believe we aren't living in a futuristic world like the Jetsons.
    Good work Will.

    Good find! Even my '93 Silverado has a control board for the wiper motor. I replaced the board 4 years ago and it's acting up again. I hate dealing with electronics, but at least I can replace just the board for about $30.

      farmboy30117 thank you, be nice if I could have got just the module I searched, maybe with a closer look we could repair the board, there's gotta be an alternative. thanks for the feedback

    Somebody needs to explain to me why we need all of this computer technology to perform a simple function in a car. How is this level of complexity for wiper operation any better than a simple dash switch and relay to the motor?
    Cars are WAY over-computerized...and this comes from somebody who makes a living dealing with computer technology. Vids like this make me want to buy some old pre-CANBUS cars to last me the rest of my life.

      A decreased number of wires, thereby saving weight and cost, as well as helping with installation at the factory. Also its an advantage to have the modules connected with each other over a network so sensor data can be shared - example - vehicle speed, intake air temperature, engine coolant temperature.

    Nice diagnostics Will and you're right about German cars being overly complicated and as your viewers have mentioned. Glad to see that the scope has helped you out and at least it proved that the can bus had some activity. Keep up the good work!

      stuzman still got it bud it's been a blessing more than once, will share more often. I was worried at first if I could capture the signals well enough, no effort at all after a little tweaking. I will put the set points in the discretion. then realized I could download the PC live view and make it more presentable on a bigger screen win win. still love that scope old faithful I named it ;) thanks again

      I've had the PicoScope for several years and have considered it to be one of the best investments I've made. I have several other scopes and always turn the PicoScope because of its long time bases. I've even used it at work to look at bus channel controller communications between PLC modules. Works great and it's worth every penny.

      Im willing to bet after sales has a lot to do with it, buying mass quantities they pay pennies on the dollar for original parts. i agree its gotta be easier to run bus lines with independent modules most using a basic code tweaked here and there. it really dose have advantages. hard to except i agree and expensive to replace compared to hardwired configurations

    I've seen situations when you dry out a circuit board, it can recover from water intrusion. Most modern boards are sprayed with lacquer or urethane to waterproof the components. It would have been worth a try to dry it and bench test it before replacing it.

    Good video. I liked the use of an oscilloscope. Nothing old school about it. Especially since its a digital scope. If it was analog then that would be old school and also not easily balance on the front of the car like that. 😜 too many techs think that they need some fancy & expensive scan tool when all they really need is a scope and the knowledge on how to use it.

    • @robinsonsauto
      @robinsonsauto  7 років тому

      thank you, your right it isn't old school just an older set up but works fantastic and has saved me many times. i will show it more often now ;) nicked named old faithful i got this from a fellow you tuber when mine had issues at the same time i gave my verus back to snap-on because it kept locking up they seem to have made many software upgrades im going to need to reinvest. however "stuzman" reached out and saved my A## with this one!!! i cant thank him enough, its been many years and has always worked well. GW instek GDS-840c

    • @petrocksgarage
      @petrocksgarage 7 років тому +1

      I prefer a good oscilloscope to a scan tool with a poor excuse for a scope 'feature' like a Snap-On Verus. A real oscilloscope is much higher accuracy, resolution, sample rate & better features (e.g. be able to see pintle humps on injector wave forms etc). Plus, with a Verus and similar scan tools, you are tied to the OS that it is running. In the case of Snap-On, it's Windows XP (last I checked) which Microsoft dropped support for years ago. In addition you are susceptible to all the Windows viruses/malware if you connect it to the internet and other glitches in the OS, not to mention bugs in Snap-On own software. You don't have that problem with a good oscilloscope. Just sayin'... :-)

    I have a 2009 Volkswagen Touareg and the passenger side windshield wiper doesn’t work. There was an ice storm and too much ice built up onto the wiper and was then turned on. Would that have caused a problem with the motor or a part on the windshield wiper itself??

      BTW, for those who aren't sure what a politician is... I'll try to explain..
      In old Latin there where towns and settlements that relied on somebody usually a male to tell the towns folk the news and important things like "the attackers are coming. Hide everyone!!" He was officially called the town cryer or Polo. Then we have Tician. That stands for Tick. A Tick is nothing more than a bloodsucker that leaves folks drained and sick.
      A POLITICAN is A Crying Whining Blood Sucker that takes and takes and doesn't care if they leave you sick and without any means to live.

    Using a testlamp on these cars is a fail in my experience. Sometimes the lamp comes on at 9volts which indicates high resistance upstream which can go undetected. Its like counting money by measuring thickness of a wand of notes. Unless the eye is trained to see the voltage relative to the intensity of the lamp. Otherwise good vid.

    QUESTION.. seeing activity on the BUS by the wiper motor is telling you that the bus is healthy all the way to the motor , but it could have been the switch on the inside the car that it could be bad too isn't it? you got lucky that when you opened the motor you found water then was obvious , i had a jetta long time ago and i had a program called VAG that i bought on ebay that was only for VW and could talk to all the modules i got rid of tha problematic engineered piece of $!@#
