      you are right, i tend to understand the "bad movie" part as "underrated" or "with bad results in the box office". History will make justice with this movie.

      +GoodBadFlicks The previous Judge Dredd(Stallone) was definitely a good < bad movie. I remember when one of my buddies found it in my DVD collection I got a verbal beating.(A lot of them yelling "I am the LAW!") Would love to watch that episode, but something tells me It's been lost because of iblip.

      I admit I didn't want to see it in theaters because it came out about the time a lot of movies were pushing the whole 3D thing as a gimmick. I thought it was going to be another cash grab.

      I’ve been reading *Dredd* (and the rest of *2000AD)* since I was a kid in the 80s... I have to see each film in the theater, even after the horror show Stallone made. It is seriously amazing with the volume and screen size in a theater...

      @@dsandoval9396 I got the chance of seeing it in theaters in 3D. The whole slow mo drug is amplified in 3D and its actually the way it was supposed to be seen. When movies like this fail, studios play it safe.

      It came out at a very competitive time. Movies like Batman Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, Django Unchained and more to compete with. Then the general lack of knowledge of Dredd probably didn't help. I just saw Dredd in 2020 and it's absolutely incredible. I wish I had seen it back in 2012.

    As a long time fan of Dredd and 2000AD this was a joyous movie to watch. They nailed the look of Mega City 1 and it's a full on balls to the wall violent action fest. I have huge respect for Karl Urban for playing Dredd so well too. It was so refreshing to see a well made hard R rated action movie and it reminded me of the 1980's and early to mid 90's when action movies were in their prime.
    In a world where there are 5 Twilight movies and there are so many shitty horror and comedy movies that get multiple sequels, Dredd 2 deserves to be made.

      ***** This is just another example of how money cannot make up for lack of real artistry. Avatar was a technological achievement, but that was about it. It failed to be really immersive (in my opinion) because I was never once convinced any of it was real. Wheras with Dredd so much of the environment just isn't there, but we believe it is, we never think to question it.

      +pewol Honestly, it just seemed to me that this is one of the rare, true blood, action movies to come out in recent memory. Just pure action from start to finish. They didn't hold back on the gore but didn't over do it at the same time and the "Slomo" sequences were amazing. I like an action movie that doesn't need much dialog to get the point across but can still drive the story forward at the same time. I don't know, just appealed to me but I'm a child of the 80's. This movie reminded me of an updated version of an 80's action movie at the end of the day :). Reminded me a lot of Conan the Barbarian, another movie that moves forward, driven primarily by action.

    Dredd has become one of my favorite movies of all time. I've been a part of the "Make a Dredd Sequel" community for more than two years now, and have signed the petition and shared it with others as much as possible, recommending everyone I talk to into this type of movie to go give it a watch and buy it if they love it.
    If Dredd will only be one movie and not getting a sequel, then so be it. I will in that case have to accept it. But that won't stop me from hoping from the bottom of my heart they'll make it a trilogy, and do everything I can to see it happen. But since the first movie just keeps on gaining more and more fans and supporters, there really is no reason why it wouldn't happen.

And since the actor of Dredd AND the producer of the movie among with probably everyone else working on the Dredd movie knows about it's off-theater success and thinks it's awesome, they will keep trying to think of a way for it to be made.

      John Carter was pretty good, but was a victim of crappy advertising and lack of faith in the project from Disney. Also, the fact that it was based on a fairly obscure literary character (even though it was the same guy who created Tarzan), didn't help either. Still, it's a really good movie that I feel eventually will become a cult hit. Sort of like how Scott Pilgrim bombed at the box office but became a cult hit via DVD and Blu-Ray sales.

    Of all the movies I saw in 2012 -- from big budget Hollywood movies to foreign air-house films -- Dredd was no doubt my favorite. Dredd is everything I wanted out of, say, a Batman movie: instead of setting up this huge situation where a city/world is in peril, just drop the character in a grounded situation and let him/her do what they do best. Not every comic book movie needs to have airships falling from the sky or lasers shooting up into the air. And Dredd proved that. And did so perfectly.

  • @Siderite
    @Siderite 9 років тому +12

    Great video! There is such a huge mismatch between what makes a movie commercially successful and what makes it a good film. John Carter, for example, was a decent film considering the source material. I remember thinking at the time that they could have gone any number of ways away from the book and made another faceless modern reboot, but they didn't and I appreciated that. Filled it with useless special effects, though.
    Thinking about that, I wonder if box office success is truly a reason for studios to make sequels. I mean, if a studio has confidence in a movie, they promote the hell out of it, they make a lot of money anyway because people go and see it before they have a chance to hear how good it really is, and they can make any number of sequels even if the first film tanks, just because they believe in the concept. If they don't have confidence, you get something like Dredd, that people didn't really hear about until it was off the big screen. Isn't that like a self fulfilling prophecy rather than a cool management decision?
    It would be interesting to graph the profit margin of films together with the occurrence of them getting a sequel.

    • @GoodBadFlicks
      @GoodBadFlicks  9 років тому +4

      Siderite Zackwehdex I really liked John Carter but the studio majorly dropped the ball on the marketing.

    • @princeofcupspoc9073
      @princeofcupspoc9073 6 років тому

      I'm tired of films that take characters and plot, but forget the major themes of the source material. You can't make a John Carter film where the characters are clothed. The pulp-nude-titulation is central to the material. The books are brutal and visceral, and very misogynistic, total dick-waving. Hollywood keeps taking tame family-friendly scripts, and buying well known material simply for the title and name recognition. I Robot, The Puppet Masters, etc. Luckily Netflix is still in a place where they don't think every film has to be dumbed down and sanitized for the lowest common denominator.

    Awesome review and I felt the same way! This Dredd movie did the character and his world justice! Stallone's was so bad, that one of the biggest mistakes was to reveal Dredd's face! And then the throw in a romance plot, and stupid and forced comic relief, stupid character arc/development, and a bunch of others. You know what I thought was funny?! Dredd's bike in the Stallone movie could not work, it just malfunctioned. I was thinking that maybe that was a subtle flipping the bird sign to us fans telling us that they're in control, and they will butcher everything that made Judge Dredd awesome. Karl urban is the true Judge Dredd! The Stallone version should be erased from Dredd history and movie history! Well that's enough ranting, so now I look forward to a sequel!

Let's hope that the Dredd/MegaCity One series does Dredd well, and allows all the detail of Dredd's tales to finally get used as they should be. It's long past time that we saw characters like Judge Death, the real Fergee ( EASY THE FERG!), and the mad Judge Cal done with full respect. I think I could do without Walter the Wobot, though.
