Your mentioned symptoms are what we called "getting old". Which is why we also became cranky when the game lack QoL. We feel like it's wasting our time for no reason.

Another thing that I found to help is keeping only a few games installed at a time. I have crazy choice paralysis, so having my options be limited is great.

I'm not all the way through the video yet, but I wanted to say that your point about matching the 'mood' of wanting to play with the time resonates so hard with me. I am SO hyped to play fighting games in the morning while I'm at work, but after I'm off and have finished all my household responsibilities, my motivation to play is just dead. I don't do any work that is physically demanding, but I am just drained by that point and would rather watch tv or read something.

I agree...portable gaming is the only way I can truly enjoy some of the more involved video games in my massive backlog. While my family watches TV, I hop on my Switch, 2DS, Vita, or Wii U (yes, I still play Wii U). As much as I'd like to play on my Series X, PS4 or PC...it just is what it is. Family gets first dibs on the TV 😅.

Great video, always enjoy the coffee related content and accompanying thoughts. For me it’s just that I don’t have time to game anymore, which has pushed me towards shorter games eg. fighters, puzzle games, 5 minute chess. Juggling all the life stuff - work, relationships, exercise, shopping, cooking, cleaning - doesn’t leave much left over. So I find myself having to multi-task all the other activities I like doing - can fit in a few rounds of 40 line tetrio while having a youtube video in the background, or watching an episode of a show while making a plastic model kit.
For single player games I can finish the odd metroidvania and FPS title, but with games being more complex and having more mechanics if you take a break it’s hard to pickup where you left off. There are some JRPGs I have my eye on, but I can’t see myself investing the hundreds of hours anymore.

I love fighting games, but for me, they give me that temptation/justification for short bursts and sets.
I won't ever feel guilty for playing games, but I do struggle with that feeling for playing "too long" at once. And that's why it becomes easier to shrug off JRPGs because they're too much of a time sink, even though I love them. I probably love that genre more than fighters.
But realistically, JRPGs are segmented in chapters well enough that I could probably invest just a hour or two on a more frequent basis.

i think addiction is another big reason with think like this.. when were doing nothing but playing video games all day our mind kinda just gets used to it. so nothing seens new anymore.. i found out that i enjoyed video games as a whole alot more if i did something else (e.g) homework, house chores, the gym. for at least 80% of the day. i would enjoy fighting games (video games in general) alot more. i mean im only 17 so this would probably range age by age. but thats what worked for me....

First time here. Nice video! So... about the "mood matching", I'd say that has a lot to do with how much energy we spend before that break for gaming comes. The trendy web coaches of personal development tend to call it "willpower", and that actually looks a pretty reasonable wording for the thing from a psychological stand point. You see, we spend all day using our "willpower" to do stuff we need to, like work etc... If we think about video games during those times, we will need even more mental energy to focus on the task we're doing. So it's only natural we get out of breath when the time for play comes, even more so if we additionally want to spend more energy thinking about installing and playing something new.
I'm interested in this topic because (un)fortunately I like to play almost any kind of games in any kind of platform. I enjoy playing anything from adventure games to FPS, from a game boy color to a PC. So my backlog is not pretty. Even some mobile games. I tend to play from 2 to 3 hours a day, but the majority of the time goes to some random games on mobile, or some Hearthstone or Valorant on PC at the end of the day. This recently led me to think about how I spend time gaming and I'm getting the same conclusions over and over again. Frist, plans to hit the backlog don't work because they are forced (use too much "willpower"?). Like someone already said here, I also tried to stream games and use that as an excuse for playing different things. After 2 months I was burned out, and just wanted to go back to a routine game. Second, I need to constantly remind myself that my time on earth is limited, and that I won't be able to play all the games I want, so there is nothing wrong about already downsize my backlog to what I find essential (and even then it will be big). And lastly, it's better to abandoned completely a game I didn't play in the last 2 or 3 months, than pretend I really care about it and force myself to finish it for the sake of completion. If I were mildly invested in it, it wouldn't take me 3 months to go back to that storyline. Sorry for the testament... have a nice day everyone.

My friend advised me to "stop playing games that don't have an end" when confronting me about my backlog.
He has a point, but popping in the fighting game of my choice to instantly play a few or many matches is just too convenient for me. The flexibility to play FGS in short or long sessions is fantastic.
One needs to commit time to playing RPGs, so I don't play them as often as I did when I was younger.

  • @xxnike0629xx

This isn't just with games. We often get into 1 thing and then we keep doing that 1 thing for a while. When we try to do something else, it just feels off; not the mood.
We often are put in a situation where when we want to play/do something we don't have the time. But when we have actual spare time, a lot of times we don't feel like playing.
The thing with JRPGs is that it's a long & dedicated thing. So that aspect alone could make it less motivating.
A lot of people end up (for example) taking a hiatus from gaming completely (or whatever hobby) or some just drastically cut back on buying new things in your hobby to minimize adding more things in backlogs.

Haha. I don’t know how old you are but I’m about to turn 45 and lately I’ve just been getting lazy when it comes to starting a new game, time is also a factor. I miss the days where I can just play uninterrupted. I feel like I loose this mood if I know I can’t. Play it long enough to really get into it. Most of the time I just want to watch UA-cam or Netflix. I totally get what you’re going thru. I still have ps4 games I barely touched and I have a PS5 now. Currently playing Elden ring and Legends Arceus. Both open world and very big games. Sometimes this can be daunting too. I feel like it will never end. Which is both good and a curse. It means I will be playing this game for years and never complete it. Meanwhile the lure and temptation of new games keep on coming. Haha. First world peoblems eh? Let’s just say I probably have enough games to last me 5-10 years. That’s how back logged I am.

I’ve fallen out of love with JRPGs back when I played Persona 3 Portable. I always like to play games in the most efficient way possible, so I ended up playing P3P with a strategy guide. Some point after the Emperor & Empress fight, I realised I wasn’t enjoying the game because I was following the instructions to the letter instead of figuring this stuff out for myself.
Digital Devil Saga and SMT3: Nocturne were a similar story, but not as rigid since they didn’t have a time mechanic like the Persona games. There was more room for me to fool about with them. Still, I tend to avoid traditional JRPGs from then on since they feel more like a checklist simulator than a game to me.

I totally get the feeling. The older I am the less time I wanna sit on a PC to play anything. The only thing I play on it nowadays is 3S, the rest of my gaming time I’m either on switch, or a retro handheld or phone, laying down on the couch with my wife while she watches or plays something. I still enjoy games, but I rather play Mother 3 on a GBA than sit for several hours to play any AAA game on a PC. Even hogging the TV with consoles is something I avoid.
Recently I also started reading both books and (more) manga, and it’s been great, and it makes it so that when I wanna play games it’s because I want to, not because it’s the only entertainment I have to rely on.

I never even knew about steam link, and for some reason it didnt even occured to me that there could be a way to play my steam games on my phone... from the time I got PS4, and then Vita and Switch... I never touched my steam library again, albeit there are some games I always wanted to play, mostly PC only visual novels. So I guess this could be a way to get into them... after all these years, haha
And the fact that they are just visual novels, the control scheme is not an issue. I actualy dislike playing anything on my phone without buttons, but this could work.
But in reality... this is not solving my issue at all... I already have such a huge backlog on my mentioned consoles, and now with steam games coming to life again for me... oh, jeez... thanks NG.

Playing Elden Ring made me realize that I no longer enjoy lengthy video games anymore. After like 40 hrs. The game felt like a chore for me. I finished it in 90 hours and I know that there's still more stuff that I could have explored. But I am done with that game. It's why I appreciate arcade games like fighting games, SHMUPS, and rhythm games a lot more. The time commitment is not based on if you can complete the full game because those types of games typically have a short duration of completion. It's moreso based on your skill level and how you compete against others 1v1, or score-based (leaderboards) + replayability. That's why I will never grow tired of arcade games and when I see new games getting console or PC ports. I don't hesitate to buy them at full price.

    • @ancientflames
      @ancientflames 2 роки тому

I loved Elden ring but yeah after 50 hours I just wanted to be done. For me knowing that all the stuff I’m collecting and progressing in doesn’t carry over to anything makes me lose motivation. Games like fort nite have ruined me because you get a cool skin or whatever in that game and its something you can show off for years to come. got a cool weapon in Elden ring? So does everyone else, doesn’t help that Elden rings story is best experienced on UA-cam via lore videos haha

Making games more accessible so you can play more means your children will see how much you game. Gaming has enhanced my life although I would prefer my child develops interests in other areas rather than mimic what I do. So I tend to lower the priority of video games while I'm with him.

I really like Nintendo first-party exclusive games on the Switch. Most of them are a pick-me-up arcade-y experience (Mario Kart, Smash, Splatoon, Animal Crossing etc) that I can play for 15-30 minutes and put down without thinking too much. Not to mention the Switch is also home to many excellent 3rd party indie games. I also have a pretty powerful desktop to play Steam/PC games but as long as Nintendo keep making good exclusives on their dedicated console/handheld, I don't think Steam alone is enough for me. Steam Deck? nah, the absence of Nintendo exclusives mean it's not really an alternative to the Switch.

I've actually fought against this feeling, and still am fighting, for the past few years now. I default to the MMORPG genre because I enjoy the gearing systems in the majority of them and I enjoy the constant grind that is required to achieve the best gear in almost all of them because it keeps me busy and it helps me completely forget about the troubles I face in real life. Recently, because of the release of Elden Ring, I have been wanting to get away from MMO's so I can enjoy other games that I left behind like From Software's souls-like games or single player story driven games like Nier Automata. The issue isn't really not having time or not being comfortable when playing but instead it is more about just not being interested in a game that I want to play at every given moment. Everytime I go to play Elden Ring I play for maybe 30 minutes to and hour before slumping down in my chair and turning off my console even though I prefer playing for hours and hours a day since that is the amount of time I give myself to play. I still haven't seemed to find a solution to the problem like you have but I am still searching for it each and everyday. Thanks for the great video and amazing content, keep up the great work!

Maybe it has something to do with the amount of expectation you put on the new versus the amount of comfort you get from the default. I'd say there is nothing wrong to enjoy any game for an hour and switch it up for other, or just stop playing. Maybe if you lower the amount of expectation about the new game, in terms of the "mental reward it will give you", but also rationalize a bit that MMORPG is something you can always get back to, you may find it is easier to play both. Hope you find a balance (=

More importantly I would love to see the original artist from that development all of these games for example of the artist that drew the street fed at three cast I would love to see them add some of the newer characters that were never in the game into the game through downloadable constant like Laura for example or only and go chemistry for the three that would be awesome I would love to see that hopefully we can make this a reality in the future maybe for the 40 year anniversary of Capcom hopefully we don’t have to wait a long though or Sean in hyper fighting lol that would be awesome if cocaine was in hyper fighting cigar from Thailand is pretty much finished lol.

I started solving this problem when in 2020 stopped playing Call of Duty Warzone because I was wasting way too much time plating that video game. But then I started playing Call of Duty Mobile and I also stopped playing it after a year or so for the same reason. But then I started playing Genshin Impact to the point my account was at youtuber level but I was not making any content so the problem was just replaced for a new one again. I was not playing that much hours a week but all my gaming time was dedicated to Genshin and to some fighting games playing ranked matches (especially Soulcalibur VI and Guilty Gear Strive). All this years I was looking at my gaming library with lots of great AAA titles ready to be downloaded and enjoyed but I didn't have the time nor the energy to do so because online gaming is so addictive due to the competitiveness (fighting games) the gambling (gacha games) or sometimes both (Call of Duty) that most of the time you're trapped playing those games. But then I got tired of the situation a couple of weeks ago and I ended up uninstalling every single online video game on every plattform I own (PS4, PC and mobile). After a couple of days I felt like a slave that was freed from his forced captivity. I started beating Final Fantasy VII Remake, then Devil May Cry 5 and today I just finished The Last of Us Part II and OMG!!! I can't believe all the fun I was missing, the top tier graphics, the amazing stories, no more microtransactions, no more battle passes, no more forced addiction! no more ranked lobbies, no more training, just pure fun with amazing masterpieces that really mean something to me instead of brainless, repetitive, addictive, low quality and empty hours, days, weeks and months wasted on online games IMO. I can't wait to get my hands on so many other great AAA games I haven't played yet. I feel like the gamer inside me was reborn like a phoenix from its ashes. I'm really way happier now! 😁 P.S.: I'll keep playing fighting games but not online anymore.

The best part is when you go back to the multiplayer games (locally at least) you actually have fun because your friends and family aren’t no life’s with crazy high skill levels. Makes fighting games and racing games way more fun when your opponent is a normal human being.

TBH getting older, having a salaryman job, life etc. I really don't want to spend my free time in front of a TV playing computer games if honest, much rather be outside in the fresh air. If it wasn't for say a Street Fighter or a dark souls game I don't think I would have any interest in booting up my PS4 anymore lol.

Don’t know if you ever played Mortal Kombat I don’t think you ever seen you playing on my back 11 on this channel but I honestly think more kamikaze is the best one I ever did since you made me pig I think I’ve seen please play the Japanese character for three feather I will go with subzero in Mortal Kombat trilogy on Mortal Kombat 11 would love to see you play on your channel though it’s probably the best American developed fighting game outside of killer instincts which I also highly recommend The frog from battle towards is in Kill State fighting games and he doesn’t hilarious dance I believe it’s a tant but it’s hilarious and it’s worth buying the game just for that

Would love to see a 3-D fighting game collection from Captain like for example rival schools collection street fighter EX plus collection maybe even add the final fight revenge fighting game that they made for the Saga Saturn or even if they released that independently of these other collections I would really love to see that maybe even a cab Converse SK colle and which include part one one and part two I would really like to see that for the modern consuls I’m really tired of trying to find these 30 year old video game system just to play the games that I like because I really don’t know how to do a simulation stuff so I’m relying heavily on trying to find all castles in all games that just continue to get more and more pricey when I could just really download a digital version of these games and it would solve for the forms I will never have to hold onto all systems that I really don’t want to

Is Capcom ever going to fix violent tens stance in ultra Street fighter two I noticed that it was completely wrong and comparison to the original character that was an SPC chaos I told the company about it I’m sure they laughed I just find it kind of funny that a fan was able to recognize that the very company that is selling the game that they made made a mistake on the very characters that they designs and it was completely wrong lol

This is why I’m gaming exclusively on the Nintendo Switch lately. It’s so convenient to be able to move my switch around and still enjoy it on the TV. I still would love to see Nintendo and Sony go back to handheld gaming. The Switch battery limits make it difficult to take around on a daily based. This was a great new coffee video!

To be honest I’m not really big on Japanese rol playing games but I do believe they have some best graphics when it comes to game development no I feel like they’re the only producers of amazing content other than the European game developers for the ones here in United States it was a vole playing game that apparently cab, was going to make called deep down that had some of the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a video game especially on a console and then they just stopped the development for it but amazing don’t know if that was real in game for the dep or just a CII trailer but either way was really looking forward to it maybe though just do a dragon storm too instead LOL

Fort nite for me haha. but I don’t like most jar-gas anyway. Beyond final fantasy and those kind of games I find most jpgs like tales of really dull, monotonous and boring. Some of them shine with a pretty good story, but I can get a similar or better story from a 12-26 ep series of anime in way less time with more memorable characters. I don’t believe anyone who says they play most jpgs for the story, as the stories are largely nothing special.
