And this was my first ever piccolo I got and I can say that it played pretty darn good for a first time player. I’m also a pretty big person with big hands so the mechanism was set for me. I can also say that the high B and C were almost impossible to get out at first, but as I got used to it, they popped right out. I’m also in high school rn and this piccolo has already gotten me to a lot of places and it’s been great.

Thank you for doing this review. I know we have been hounding you to do it for a while now. I love my Pearl 105. It definitely seems like it was made for big hands. The keys feel like smooth little coins under my fingers. I play it with my community band and it blends beautifully.

Hi Joanna. I’ve just treated myself Pearl 105 for my first ever piccolo, and now I understand why everyone raves about the Pearl piccolo’s. They just work, and an additional bonus for me is that I can feel no resistance in the head joint so it won’t trigger my vertigo. It’s just a case of me getting used to finger positions, especially around G and A, but overall I’m thoroughly impressed and it’s a massive improvement to the first piccolo I tried out xx

Yaaay! I play on the 165 (of which I also ended up purchasing the grenaditte headjoint as a secondary). For my personal playing style, I love it (it was my second picc after an all metal gemeinhardt, and after using several different piccs at my high school). As suggested in this video, I did actually use it in my youth orchestra, and now at my uni! It was definitely interesting to see how what was said in this video would parallel how I play (I definitely agree on where the pebble of air is on the 165). I will say that I also have some issues with the B7, but not with Ab7, C8, or even C#8 (I love the Ab7 on this compared to other piccolos I’ve used, even the nice ones that my uni owns). I like having both head joints in case I need to play outside for some gig, or even once orch please I played had two piccolo parts and the grenaditte headjoint blended better with the other piccolo players grenaditte piccolo, so I personally enjoy the versatility there. I would definitely recommended seeing if this piccolo works for you :)

I'm about to go to high school, which means marching with a piccolo. Thankfully I've had the opportunity to play piccolo for some songs this year, but the school piccolos have been used a lot and are worn down, and the ones at the high school are even more worn because of years of marching. So I've been looking for piccolos to buy for myself, and these were on my list! So happy you have made a review and I get to hear about these piccolos from your perspective!

  • @kanadra

I'm not exactly in the market for a new flute or piccolo, but I always enjoy watching your reviews. Very informative, and entertaining!
Out of curiosity, what kind of ear plugs do you use while playing the piccolo? I've tried the basic foam plugs, and I have a hard time playing my picc. while wearing them! I don't know if it's just in my head, or if it's truly happening, but it seems like if I can't hear myself, I can't get a clean strong sound, especially for higher octaves.
I'd love some advice or suggestions, or even a video tutorial! Thanks. :)

A month ago I was looking into Pearl piccolos and wished you had done a review on them. I literally just got mine in the mail yesterday. I;m so happy you are reviewing more piccolos! As others have said, I really enjoy your review videos cause you actually explain what kind of flute player matches which instrument. If you get a chance, could you review the nagahara mini? It's the only piccolo I've seen that has a low b key :O Thank you

Joanna, thank you for finally testing the pearl piccolos. You do sound great on them. They are relieable, in tune and a good gain for the money.
However I am surprised that you didn't be comfy by the assisted fingering (right hand). The worlds best piccolos do have this, like Braun, Burkart, Powell Custom, Hammig and so on. This is the Standard! The Powell Signature and the Powell Sonare are an exception :-). Don't "torment" yourself with nonergonomical flutes and piccolos!
    Greetings
    Benjamin

Yay love my Pearl 105 piccolo ! I got a grenadilla wood Pearl headjoint for it so that extra space in the case is super useful. Tip: get the 105 and buy the grenadilla hj separately. This combo is usually cheaper than getting the 165. Only difference is you don’t have the silicone pads.

I have a PFP-105, great instrument, but I'd really like to have the wood headjoint too. Really annoyingly Pearl won't sell the 165 headjoint by itself for a reasonable price, they want to charge $1,300, which is MORE then cost of a new instrument. You would think that since the case comes with two headjoint slots they'd let you'd get the other head... So my plan is to see if used granadilla headjoints from FCNY will fit my Pearl; I've got a Di Zhao coming in the mail to test right now.

I have a composite Bernhard Hammig and the only thing I hate about it is the Split-E. I know some have “on/off” switches but it’s the extra rod that poses the problem, I’d just it rather not be there. I’ve never had any issues with high E anyway so it’s completely unnecessary for me. It makes it a lot more difficult to hold onto and play quickly. Do you know of ANY professional model, even low-end professional, piccolos that does NOT come with the Split-E but is composite?

Hi Joanna, we have been fans for years!
A question-my daughter just started HS. Her teacher is “old school” and said a wave headjoint is for beginners and will hold her back as she progresses. What are your thoughts?
Also, we need a composite headjoint for marching band, but wondering if she really needs a wooden headjoint for concert band, or is the composite enough?
    Thanks!!

  • @soschadao
    @soschadao 6 років тому

So the pearl 165 (and by extension the 105) comes in 3 headjoint cuts. high wave (wood or composite) and standard cut. The 165 is the only one that the wood headjoint is made for and is only available on that model. the 105 is intended to have the 2 headjoints, and are marketed with one or the other. but you can pay the extra $300 for the other one (good for people who may not know what they want or for doublers. I find i prefer the wave one myself, but i play a lot. composite ones are good for doublers, traveling, marching band, etc.

I'm seriously considering the Pearl 105. I really want a Phillip Hammig, but I can't justify the price and the Pearl seems so much more practical for what I'll be using it for. Thanks for the review.

I upgraded to the 105 earlier this school year. It's great. I actually feel as if the trill keys are smaller but the Bb lever is huge. I thought it looked like mine and I had to check. But yeah its's a great piccolo, especially for it's price!

Rachel Allen Yes they’re pretty similar but there are some alternate fingerings that are specifically for piccolo because sometimes the regular flute fingerings make it more difficult to get those notes in tune.

My daughter became very disappointed in the 165. I bought it to get her through college, but that didn't happen. Initially she blamed her inability to play high B & C on her inexperience. (Wish she would have told me!) Turned out it was the piccolo, she has no trouble on other piccolos. Her professor said it could be the mechanism. It's financially upsetting!

  • @erind9535

Pearl makes some nice piccolos but unfortunately they don't mesh well with my playing style :( I find it a little strange since I have a Guo Grenaditte piccolo that I love. From what I've read, Guo invented the grenaditte material and helped develop the Pearl piccolo. I think that high B7 is just a trickier note to get out than the C8. Would love it if you did a review on the Di Zhao 201 and the new Lyric Piccolo. I think they are currently the least expensive grenadilla piccolos on the market.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist

The Di Zhao 102 is a composite piccolo while the Di Zhao 201 is a grenadilla piccolo. It would be interesting to see how similarly or differently they play. She did buy the Di Zhao 102 piccolo, so you are remembering correctly :)

You are right! I have actually seen comments in the Flute Forum on Facebook from Geoffrey Guo telling people he helped with the Pearl piccolo design. It’s funny though the Guo isn’t designed the same way. The Pearl piccolo is actually a copy of another very high quality piccolo, The Hans Reiner piccolo. I would love to get a baby blue Guo piccolo, that would be fun.

Good morning! I wanted to ask you a question. :) I cannot decide between the Yamaha YPC-62 and Pearl 105E. My budget covers either one, but to be honest, I am terrified of cracking. I know the sound in the wooden piccolos is much warmer (which I love). I currently live in Thailand though and it is super hot and humid, so I worry quite a bit about cracking (and the overall upkeep of a wooden instrument). If I bought the Yamaha, it would be my first wooden instrument. Do the wooden piccolos really crack as often as I have read? If so, do you think the Pearl 105E would be equal to the YPC-62 in terms of sound, quality, and longevity?

If you're looking at the Pearl 165, maybe also look at the Yamaha P62 also. I managed to get mine second hand for the same price as a Pearl 165. I'd definitely say it's worth the extra money and the whole piccolo is made from grenadilla wood, so you get a much sweeter sound (at least I do!) Happy shopping!
