Just so that misinterpretation does not propagate any further I would like to lay down a few facts: 1- Shogunate in this period is not over. Shogun is a supreme military commander title given to any clan leader with the official role of protecting the emperor, though in practice this gave the Shogun, the de facto political power as well. 1603 is just the beginning of Edo period where the Tokugawa clan consolidates its power becoming Shoguns for more than 200 years and the title would not pass on to another clan anymore. 2- The shamisen instrument the character carries in the back, though sounding similar to a western banjo, couldn´t be more different in its origins and the way it is played. To start, the shamisen was essentially invented in China hundreds of years before Christ, so no way it can be regarded as a "western instrument modification" as inferred by the presenter. It is a three chord instrument with no musical note markings on the neck, which makes it particularly hard to learn to play the exact same tune every time. The use of Shamisen on the background music mixed in Western movie style is appropriate, as Yotei is close to another location called Tsugaru straight, where the shamisen is a very prominent musical instrument with modern artists blending its sounds with western music. Also it gives the vibes of a frontier story mirroring the Ezo land with the North American far west. 3-Though the Tokugawa clan did start their reign at the same time as this game portrays I doubt the main character would ever interact with the Tokugawas much less other samurais like Musashi, or Kojiro. The northern territories were a forgotten afterthought area for these warriors and daimyos lords, so much so fallen samurais and civilians would flee to these lands to run away from their rulers. If I had to bet, it is more in line with bounty hunter related story, just like a western movie. However the wolf symbology does carry a significant weight as the native people from Ezo would regard them as important animals, with some local folklore claiming the Ainu people were born from the coupling of a wolf with a goddess, and mount Yotei also is referred by these people as the female mountain, to praise women vitality. Fitting symbology with the character.
i think the main antagonist faction is probably Matsumae Clan(fomerly known as Kakizaki Clan), but i think Tokugawa Shogunate's assassins or Toyotomi Remnants could possibly appear as minor enemy factions too.
