It’s funny because it’s the last thing you would expect from an author. His comment about reading a book struck me. I’m like, yeah, that’s what drew me into RPGs in the first place, especially before they had voice acting. It was like an interactive book, especially the old BioWare PC games like Baldur’s Gate 2 or Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy VI

I think God of War Ragnarok would be a good one. He could lower the difficulty to his liking if he wanted and just do the main story missions and finish the game relatively quickly. He already did the first little bit of the game and he liked it.
I’m OK with the longer intro. It’s a cinematic way to introduce transport players into the world they (likely) read about or watched. Also, the wizard duels/battles are really cool!
Once you get through the initial introduction stuff, which you were pretty close to finishing, then the game opens up into basically an open world experience. The castle interior is ridiculously detailed, too, and is a lot of fun to explore.

Love the honesty in this! Reminds me of when I tried to have my wife play Mass Effect: she was bored by conversations and then had no idea what she was supposed to do. I said " you have to make your way to the tower". She replied, "how do you know that?". I answered, "well, all that dialogue you skipped went over what your mission was, so...yeah..." She was such a good sport! Clearly not her type of game. She's eager to watch *me* play Hogwarts Legacy because she knows she doesn't have the patience for it 😆
Well there’s two types of games, there’s the games that focus more on story and are basically mini films like this one and there’s just the games that have like 4 second cutscenes and are all action where all you have to do is shoot people. It makes sense that if he’s not a gamer that this is not only what he’s most familiar with but what he prefers.
His reaction to the game was hilarious! Haha! I totally understand his perception of the introduction, I felt the same way. Although the game is so much better right after he quit playing so I would love to see him play the game at a later stage. Thank you for the video!
I've never seen anyone skip those cutscenes, except maybe speedrunners 😂. But honestly, you should have more patience for those scenes as they create immersion and help you understand the context. This is especially important in times of platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and so on, which have the core concept of short videos that make us forget how to focus for longer periods of time. If you don't have enough time during the day because you're too busy, try playing the game after you come home from work at night. Games are supposed to help you cool down and relax after a stressful day. However, rushing through the game creates the opposite effect by causing more stress. With all due respect, I don't think you're in a position to give the game a review, even if you've played it for 45 minutes. I don't watch a movie for 20 minutes while responding to messages on my phone every 4 minutes and then draw a conclusion after only seeing 16% of the movie. In the case of Hogwarts Legacy, you've probably only seen about 3% of the game. If you don't want to play the game as it's supposed to be played, why don't you react to the gameplay at 150% or 200% speed? That would save you time, and you'd be able to understand everything.
Makes senses why Drew would find the game slow. Men of his vintage need things be be extra fast and action-packed to excite their senses, which have dulled with age.
I agree with Andrew, i mean the scenary, atmosphere and music are spectacular. But this is a videogame, you can expect me to just wait through 1 hour of cutscenes with some casual gameplay that consists in touching two buttons and follow a npc. And after that slow prologue you have freedom to... keep exploring and doing tutorials. If you are a hardcore fan of Harry Potter i can understand that you love this game, but i can't see such a slow beggining of a game gameplay wise as good videogame design.
It’s just too bad the game is woke up the wazoo. The forced diversity took me out of the experience. Every other vendor/teacher is black/asian. Doesn’t make any sense in late 1800’s Britan, especially compared to the established 1990’s in the same universe.
I love this game so much. It's wonderful. I don't understand why people think it's anti-trans... JK rowling didn't even say what most of them say she said and the game even has a person who's probably trans and is portrayed very positively in-game.
If Harry Potter took place in the US, there would be wizards with AR-15’s that fired transfiguration bullets that turned their enemies into (insert whatever horrors you can imagine). Additionally, the wizard would charm their guns to be self lubricating and I expect there would be aim assists by way of magic
A slow, cutscene-heavy beginning is a given in story-based game, and frankly I don't see anything wrong with that. It has to explain the setting and the premise of the story. Books and movies do the same thing. Once you get over that initial hurdle, the gameplay always picks up. Ironically, you stopped shortly before this one does. And personally, I think ignoring the story in a story-heavy game is missing out on a major part of the experience. You wouldn't know why you're doing what you're doing, you're just doing stuff because some prompt tells you to.
Fun trivia for iPhone users (it may also work on Android but I don’t know for sure) - if you say “Lumos” to Siri, it will turn on your flashlight. “Hey Siri, Lumos!”
This video shows some of the flaws with some Playstation / Xbox games in that they try too much to be an interactive movie, compared to Nintendo's strengths like in Breath of the Wild with letting you just start playing the game and learning through clever game design
To each his own. I far prefer this type of game to the Zelda games because the stories tend to be so much richer in them. To some degree, every Zelda game has the same story. But there are happy mediums - the Elder Scrolls games throw you into the action but also have stories that are pretty rich and deep.
It does get better as you play, there are less cut scenes then the bombardment of them in the beginning; I think you have to understand that it is explaining what is happening at that period of time (This is before Harry Potters time, and even Dumbledores time, way back in the past). So it is trying to catch you up to speed on what is happening in the magical world. This game is very versatile, if you just like fighting/killing than this game isn't for you. If you like the HP series, always envied Hagrid or Newt Scamander and wanted a collection of dangerous magical creatures yourself, would love the chance at redecorating the requirement room to your liking, collecting materials for potions making or traits to upgrade your "armor", dueling obnoxious students or fighting dark wizards/goblins and inferi, questing throughout Hogwarts/Hogsmeade/and all over the neighboring Wizarding world, having the chance to explore the forbidden forest, learning how to fly on a broomstick or other magical creatures, Looking like Professor Snape dressed in Neville Longbottoms Grandmother's clothing, creating potions or growing plants that help you survive, and using your noggin to figure out puzzles and more? (This is just the beginning of the game) Than this game is for you! It is honestly crazy how much they have packed into this game, the only thing I can think of to make it better is if it was a mmorpg game. That would be really crazy!
Klavan, I’d love to see you play Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I think you would really enjoy it! I’m not a big video game player, but quickly fell in love with that game.
I'm 34, and I find it fascinating to see the older generation playing new game titles and providing commentary in real-time of their experience. It tells you a lot about the way generations view the gaming experience from how they react to cinematic cutscenes alone. This was fun to watch 😁
It was almost 2 hrs of cut scenes to get to where you stopped. I know, because I was slightly farther than you and I refunded it on Steam PC platform. Was never a Harry Potter fan, but always liked fantasy. They captured the essence of Harry Potter in this game, which is why I didn't like it.
As an avid gamer this is the first game in a long time that I have not skipped any of the cut scenes. The voice acting and story line is great in this game. I find it hilarious that the trans community is angry at a game that has semi main character being trans while it also allows players to play as trans but that's not enough, it's never enough.
I’m not a video game player, but I love this game! There are way less cut scenes once you get further into the story. They had to lay out the story aspect in the beginning. I am a massive Harry Potter fan though, so that’s probably part of the reason. I just love seeing the detail they put into the game and all the things they incorporated from the hp books! The castle and landscape are stunning.
I agree that the beginning of the game is PAINFULLY slow... but it does get MUCH better as you get further into the game. I kept hearing good things about this game and continued playing past the point you have in this video, and I can say that while there are still some cutscenes that drag a bit, it's nowhere near as bad as it is at the beginning of the game... and the exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat mechanics make this an overall fun game if you can get past the painfully slow beginning.
Lol, you really do have no patience. I understand where you’re coming from, though. RPGs aren’t for everyone. That being said, you barely got past the introduction. Not long after where you stopped, you would have been set loose into a beautiful open world, and I’m disappointed you didn’t stick around to explore it.
Hey does anyone know if J.K Rowling holds the same stance on trans people who are women thinking they're men? I have a weird feeling she's be the kind of person to say trans women aren't women but trans men are men
The game, especially in the early part, is more theatre than gameplay, but fans of the Hogwarts world are into that. Not for everyone, but a very rich experience all the same.
I wonder if Klavan has ever played Red Dead Redemption 2? In my mind, there's very few games in the medium that convey the message of redemption, love, charity, and sacrifice and I think, if he could be patient enough, he'd love the story.
I actually really appreciate Klaven doing this one. His perspective broadened mine. I’m down for living in and taking my time in this world but now I see that kind of gameplay isn’t for everyone. God of War is a good balance of action and story vs Hogwarts Legacy is more like a playable movie, at least in the beginning. I didn’t realize it took so long just to get to hogwarts itself, then there’s classes, etc.
Andrew needs to play Batman: Arkham Asylum. It invented a great combat system that was copied into lots of other games and it's 10x times better than any Batman movie. One of the best games ever made.
Keep in mind that Klavin just played the prologue, which does drag a little as it's primary purpose is to introduce the player to the Game. It does pick up.
You should honestly do "Let's Plays" of games, and film playing them beginning to end. As for the cutscenes and length, games like these always start slow, but as you progress, you get more powerful, the enemies are more varied, and you feel way more powerful.
I keep saying. Andrew needs to play P5R. It seems like the sort of thing he'd really be into. Psychology. Religion. Philosophy. And really, REALLY good music. There's a LOT to like.
The first 2-3 hours ARE pretty dull, but after you get past all the training and intro instructions, it picks up and is very fun. I’ve been playing for 19 hours and I haven’t followed the main plot most of the time.
It's so strange. Normally, folks his age are yelling that we need to stop playing video games. And here is the complete opposite. I like the change in roles.
I got this game for my wife to play and she’s obsessed with it. I’ve managed to ruin a few of the spells for her though. The protego protect spell sounds like they’re saying potato. So I just walk around the house yelling “potato” randomly
"Look how realistic that waterfall is and those waves" 5:27 The water still could use a lot of work, the waves never really break. It's a cheap trick. It uses an animated texture slapped onto a plane of polygons to create the rolling motion, and some white is slapped on in specific places to "simulate" foam, it doesn't actually use any particles.

You wouldn't know why you're doing what you're doing, you're just doing stuff because some prompt tells you to.
I agree. He claims to like video games, but appears to have no understanding of them at all. Nor the patience
Uh, for a man who loves narrative, he sure can't sit through it.
More of KlavanPlays! Thisis great
I'm 34, and I find it fascinating to see the older generation playing new game titles and providing commentary in real-time of their experience. It tells you a lot about the way generations view the gaming experience from how they react to cinematic cutscenes alone. This was fun to watch 😁
Hot Gandalf has redefined the term “Pot Smoker”! 😂😂😂
The game’s front loading is HEAVY. Just push past the opening and then it takes off. But yes, the beginning was sssssllllllloooooowwwwww.
I named my character Nicholas Nickleby after my favorite Charles Dickens character, seemed to fit the environment 😊❤
I’m trans and I love the introduction.
As an avid gamer this is the first game in a long time that I have not skipped any of the cut scenes. The voice acting and story line is great in this game.
I find it hilarious that the trans community is angry at a game that has semi main character being trans while it also allows players to play as trans but that's not enough, it's never enough.
The start of the game is that slow, it gets a lot better, just keep skipping the shit
Your impatience with the immersive cutscenes is really funny, I have to admit.
The edit is pure gold!
The castle and landscape are
stunning.
That Yoda at 7:33 LOL
Yeah, Klavan really needs to start a gaming channel. I need more than these little nuggets of gameplay he gives us. 😆
When confronted with controversy around 'trans' I think, "Manual or automatic?"
Klavan playing video games is the best thing that has ever happened to American culture. PS - We both picked the same character. Good job! 😊
I read that the average time players play the storyline of Hogwarts Legacy is about 35 hours in total.
I'm so happy to be starting this video.
I wonder if Klavan has ever played Red Dead Redemption 2? In my mind, there's very few games in the medium that convey the message of redemption, love, charity, and sacrifice and I think, if he could be patient enough, he'd love the story.
Ite that Yoda mhhhmm made me burst out laughing
Does this man realize that we would all legit watch full Klavan lets plays of basically anything? Please Klavan!!!
Wait, did Andrew Klavan just use Father Ariandel as a meme? My respect for this man has just increased.
The first 2-3 hours ARE pretty dull, but after you get past all the training and intro instructions, it picks up and is very fun. I’ve been playing for 19 hours and I haven’t followed the main plot most of the time.
Sorting hat is mailing it in after all these years. Drew Slyther obviously a Slytherin or Hufflepuff, and no one knows what the hell a Hufflepuff is.
I had the same experience playing the first KOTOR on Xbox. I want minimal talking to NPC’s
Freaking Yoda 🤣🤣
It's so strange. Normally, folks his age are yelling that we need to stop playing video games. And here is the complete opposite. I like the change in roles.
I'm okay with lots of cut scenes, I'll basically play any Harry Potter game that isn't LEGO 🤣
The lego Harry Potter games were great! Lol
I got this game for my wife to play and she’s obsessed with it. I’ve managed to ruin a few of the spells for her though. The protego protect spell sounds like they’re saying potato. So I just walk around the house yelling “potato” randomly
"Look how realistic that waterfall is and those waves" 5:27
The water still could use a lot of work, the waves never really break. It's a cheap trick. It uses an animated texture slapped onto a plane of polygons to create the rolling motion, and some white is slapped on in specific places to "simulate" foam, it doesn't actually use any particles.
