- No way to fixing this young lady's boat it has 55 year old Detroit Diesel's. This boat was the WORST that I've seen in Key West. There is NO WAY I could work on it. Plus we worked on the air conditioning on a 168ft support ship had a submarine onboard and the mother ship was 160ft.

Had to say NO way to helping this poor young lady and the unfortunate part is she has to have her boat running to stay in the marina. What would you have done? The boat has 55 yr old motors and IMO way too much liability for our company!
unsubbed you are a fool.
That old guy that owns the old Bug might just be the guy who can fix the lady’s Detroits. He will also be the guy who has told you how many times he has changed lead acid batteries even though he services them regularly. That’s why he’s the guy who upgraded to LiFePo batts. A slight change in the charging profile is all you need, and you will never change batteries again. As for Ray,Cors and algae … if you have algae, you should probably do fuel polishing and tank cleaning. Algicide works good if your tank is already clean, because it will keep it that way. But if you have algae on your tank walls, algicide will break it loose and you will be changing Racors and primaries forever. As for super yachts, money is never an issue, so make sure you charge accordingly. Retired tugboat Engineer here, who loves old 2-cycle Detroit diesels and old bugs and split window buses.
Great episode! Thanks for sharing! 👍👍

Another amazing video! I wanted to ask if you would ever suggest cleaning Raycors with something to not change so often, I just change them before they start looking bad, but have seen others spray with something to clean them? Thanks for any thoughts!
Best to buy new filters.
Sold our Express Cruiser a month ago, we make good money but I had to get out of boating, costs are nuts.
We can understand costs and time waiting for parts is crazy.
AGM Batteries for Engine. LiFePO4 for everything else. Both are maintenance free, and can take the pounding. The Lithium batteries are also super light, which is huge for me.
Thanks for sharing you’ve got some great tips!
AGM and lifepo4. Although I'm not at 4000 cycles, and the 4ea. Relion 300ah batteries are failing fast.
I'm replacing with 32ea 300ah CATL prismatic cells for a 2400ah storage bank.
I use agm batteries in my boat and we use them at radio towers as back up power. We get about 10 years out of them. I replaced my boat batteries at 12 years old and still had over 75% capacity, We are using Odyssey batteries. Great shows chip
Thanks for watching us and sharing your insight!
I don't see the issue on fixing the detroits
Way too much liability in our opinion.
If it was our own boat no problem but not someone else’s.
At least it’s a classic punch buggy 😂!!!!! Lol priceless 😊
I use lead acid for my starter battlers and house battery, but lithium for my Rhodan spot lock. I would like to use lithium for my house battery as well, but I understand lithium batteries confuse the rectifier regulator on the alternator. It can’t tell when to stop charging the lithium battery and ends up frying the alternator.
There are some workarounds for that but I just like AGM at this point. If I remember u can us a C monster charger with diffent types. Don’t quote me on that.
I like AGM ,,, this is what I have in my boat
We always recommend AGM.
For my outboards, AGM. Good tradeoff between cost and reliability. Matt, you have the ladies crying..
lol yup crying cause I won’t try to fix their POS 😩
@@WillFixThat I was thinking it would be interesting to see a start to finish video of your project boat with advice for people who may want to take on a similar project.
Looks like Gene Chaser. Thing of beauty and dreams.
What’s Gene Chaser?
@@WillFixThat Gene Chaser is a Damen superyacht support vessel. It is commonly found alongside Gene Machine. The way you answered that confirms that this is in fact not Gene Chaser, but it is beautiful nonetheless.
@@KenJ931nope guess not Gene Chaser lol 😮
What's the status of the gas in freshwater tank boat? Did he end up cutting the fresh water tank out?
No status yet …. He hasn’t returned yet to make a decision. Thanks for asking.
Detroit’s are great motors but it’s true finding a mechanic is VERY hard to find. I’m in frame rebuild on my own having trained myself. Mine are 6v92. It’s a shame but in reality there are very few real mechanics anymore… it’s all plug and play…digital part swapping. A huge problem is the is no real manufacture support anymore parts for legacy motors are near impossible to get from the OEM.mthey want $100 add on for any order if you want it with in a month..otherwise it’s wait and see. There are aftermarket sources…they are much better. Mechanic wise there are lots of hucksters that will tell you they know…but more than likely they don’t. I have spent more time backing up than moving forward but lots of reading manuals and there are some really good Detroit mechanics on UA-cam. So information is out there. But for a lady with no mechanic knowledge it’s a walk away or donate. Detroit diesel dealer is a joke anymore.
You are right on many of your points! We don’t really have Detroit mechanics down here either! They were just in very rough condition and it wasn’t worth it to try and help! It must have been bad for Matt to say no cause he always wants to be the lifesaver.
Bus grease monkey on UA-cam. They work on a lot of Detroits. They around Nashville TN
I use 422B on top of or in place of R22. You lose about 10% efficiency, but it helps to extend the use of R22 equipment if it in good enough shape. The last bottle I purchased (St. Louis area) -$150 and now it is $450..If my math is correct that is 300% inflation!
Can you mix these?
@@WillFixThat The EPA and manufacturers say no and since you are doing work for customers I wouldn't mix them.
@@deanbone6790 yeah that's what Matt thought when I mentioned it to him.
@@WillFixThat It does work (heard from a reliable source:) It's nice to be able to extend the use of an R22 system without having to pay the outrageous cost of the gas. Now we have the insanity of the 454B systems replacing the 410's coming down the pipeline.
Is there a fuel additive you can add at each fill up to prevent algae?
There are some like Sea foam and also some enzyme ones that are harder to source.
We use Prist in jet fuel to stop growth.
So many 70’s and 80’s Vikings were built with Detroit’s , I wonder what they do to keep them running?
We don’t see those Vikings down here…. We see the new ones.
@@WillFixThat Really! That and gas engines in the 35 were all I saw being used but this was when the biggest boat was the 46’ and various stretched versions.
@@Cheers_Warrenyeah we don’t see the older ones…. Salt water probably ate them up.
@@WillFixThat yup ! Different era
I really like your UA-cam videos because more boaters need to understand it's not a car? It needs more maintenance you just can't hop on a boat turn the key and run for certain things you have to do. I always just scratch my head why these people keep abusing their watercraft this way. Like with fuel I've always had dual large capacity rancor water separators filters for a reason the first one's going to get most of the bad stuff the second one will get the stuff to pass us through the first one double redundancy very important. Same thing your fuel tanks if you got diesel I've always put a good diesel additive into my diesel just for growth to stop it. When I've had gas boats I've put rancor filters on my gas boat too. I always tell her buddy the difference is that you want to have big fan system for your gas boat first thing I was taught with operating a gas boat is the second you come on that boat first thing you do after turning the power on is turning on your blowers and waiting 10 minutes at the minimum and open your hatches and smelling around. I want to go kaboom. With my friends that have sailboats they're the worst when it comes to babying their engines they don't. I reminded a few of my friends I told them that they want their engines to last first thing that got to do is run their engines put it in idle and let it warm up the operating temp and then bring it up to about a thousand RPMs and just run it for a few minutes five maybe 10 minutes and then bring back to idle for a couple minutes before you shut it off because most voters that have sailboats run their engines for 5 minutes they don't get the thing the operating temperature and then they shut it off quickly that's not good. It's all about teaching people. Like with my aluminum skiff I have I have a western aluminum skiff 18 ft great skiff I also have filters on that for my outboards I also have a bilge pump on that too it's all about making sure you're vessel will run forever if you take care of it properly
You rock CoolHand …. We can’t lead a horse to water but we can try 😅
What old Detroit DIESELS are they the DD-60's those things run forever if they are leaking oil it means it's running like a champ lol but no I totally understand why you said no and yea stuff is getting out of control expensive and holy cow those are huge ships lol yea I called them ships not boats because well they are longer then a certain foot 😅
It may have been those motors Matt didn’t stay long at the boat once he saw the condition.
@@WillFixThat it was one of those the longer you look at it the worse it gets
@@honeybunbandit1and Matt doesn’t want to see her cry 😢
@@WillFixThat I don't blame him one bit I wouldn't want to either
Unless it was repowered, they are not Series 60. 55 years old would be the older 2 stroke diesels.
AGM only way to go on older boats, lithium you got to change the whole charging system
We love AGM.
If I have the money LiPro4, followed by AGM because of their durability and longevity.
We mostly use AGM 👍
you know i think it would be a good business to sell parts in keywest , just like the gold rush you didn't wanna dig for gold you wanted to sell shovels keywest seems like a boat rush type of place
lol good point … just depends on what kind of parts! Plenty of boats.
looks like you've got an M42 right there.
Yup maybe 👍
What ever happened with your old diesel truck. Last I remember you were replacing an injector or something and I don't remember seeing anything else about it.
Omg thanks for asking it’s still at the garage … supposed to pick it up tomorrow. It’s been a long terrible ride and it’s still not fixed! Time to get it & move forward.
How long is a boat,,, before they are called ship
Lots of opinions… they really should be called yachts! We are just used to say boats.
When the LOA is 60 meters and over
I only install AGM, nothing else
Thanks us to for the most part!
OBSERVATION...price gouging is getting out of hand.
Definitely not us …
That boat had 2 boats and a submarine?
Yes that's right!
👍👍
Thanks fatcat!
I have 4 bottles of r22 I will sell ya. Only problem I live in Hawaii
Oh yeah that’s a hefty delivery fee 🤣
AGM'S
Yes all the way!
9:05 Battle Born
Boat name?
You paid over $2000 for a jug of r22 then I have a few jugs I will sell you at 1800
Sent them down 🤣
