    If you overwinter bees here in Hickory N.C. in a single 10 frame hive, how many frames need honey and is it possible.
    What about single nuc's , how many frames do they need. I got single nuc;s and they are packed to the rim with bees, but I think it is to late to add supers.
    Any advice.
    Happy birthday, Kamon.

    Can you comment what to do if the top box didn’t get fully drawn out with comb, but say half of it did? What do you recommend for going into winter like that with a double deep.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      My bees could over winter like that likely. However you could remove the top box and put all the best frames in the bottom and feed them. Overwintering singles is preferred by many beekeepers

    I insulate the lids and also wrap the hives in 30# black roofing felt for the winter. I also have a 4" screened bottom shim that I fill with pine bedding to absorb moisture in the hives. SE PA beekeeper.

    Kamon, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the when and how of feeding in the fall. I know hive top feeders are bad in winter because the liquid will drip down onto the bees and kill them. But is it a bad idea to give them some 2:1 in a frame feeder and just keep it there? And pollen substitute...if I offer it to the bees, am I going to induce brooding when they shouldn't be making new population?

    How do you get 2:1 syrup to completely dissolve? I always have sugar left in the bottom of the feeder. Thanks for the videos their a big help

    • @russellkoopman3004

      Hot water (120-130 F) and a little stirring. I went to 2.5 to 1 on my last two feedings and I did have some sugar left over from when the feeder was empty but after a day the bees had taken that away also.

    • @virgilcrites8906

      I heat 170-180 and stir 10-15 min with a drill and still have trouble getting it to dissolve

    • @russellkoopman3004

      @@virgilcrites8906 I use volume measurments - 6 cups of water to 12 cups of sugar. Maybe the cup of water weighs more than a cup of sugar?? Maybe there is a difference in water? The last batch I tried 15 cups of sugar to 6 cups of water and the last cup would not dissolve.

    Guys, another reason to use the parchment paper/wax paper is to keep the SHBs off of it, especially if it's a weaker hive.

    I did my last check on Sunday. Looking good. Very low to no mites, no hive beetles, or wax moths. This Saturday a high 57 low 37. The draught stopped fall flow. Feeding and feeding. Still had 3 frames of capped brood. Plan on insulating with bubble wrap.

    That's a good point about taking care of the so-so hives. An extra gallon can go along way.
    Does golden rod honey crystallize in TN during the winter. I have heard northern beekeeps claim it does for them. Sell fall honey for $10 a lb and feed $1 a pound syrup that doesn't harden in the winter.

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому

      I have never noticed our golden rod doing that but there are several types of golden rod so maybe it does for others! I do really like the pro sweet it puts on weight quick and the bees seem to do very well with it.

  • @charlesthomas5737
    @charlesthomas5737 4 роки тому

    Kamon, using Pro sweet do you find that you use half the amount of pro sweet compared to use using regular 2 to 1 sugar water when you feed your hives? I am thinking that if I feed a hundred gallons of regular 2 to 1 sugar water feed that I would only have to use 50 gallons of Pro sweet instead. I know that Pro sweet has almost the consistency of honey. I am trying to figure out the price comparison between regular 2 to 1 sugar water mix and pro sweet. I have about 40 hives and this year I used 1900 pounds of sugar to get them ready for winter and I paid $ 0.33 cents a pound for sugar. A friend of mine is getting a tote of pro sweet from Mann lake and I am going to get some from him to try it.

      As far as I know, formic acid will mites as well as hive beetles.
      So treating in cool weather could kill mites as well as killing mites and if it is cold already new beetles will not fly nor invade the hive.

    So I am in SOCAL and everything I've been reading and watching has said use pollen patty's in the spring to stimulate the laying of brood. Is it beneficial to use it in the fall as well?

    • @kamonreynolds
      @kamonreynolds  4 роки тому +1

      Not nearly as much. It really depends on the climate. We feed it at the end of the fall flow to help get a little more brood pre winter.

    So I bought a 10 lbs buck of pollen paddy as Mann Lake the guy that helped me recommend I use a low dosage of pollen so the queen won't start laying heavily. I put some in the top feeder and today I notice bees attacking each other and black I don't know what those were around the beehive I don't know if I should take it away and maybe give it to my girls in winter or put it in a different part of my back yard so the other insects won't bother my beehive and its queen. What is your recommendation???

      Denatured alcohol or Everclear does a pretty good job on hands and tools. May take dye out of clothes if used for spot cleaning, and too costly to soak entire article. Probably best to toss the sponges.
