As a contractor, there’s a few things people should keep in mind when doing this at home.
    1. Apply MULTIPLE coats of joint compound. The guy in this video only applies one but in general you should always have at least 2-3 depending on damage.
    2. If you are painting the wall after the patch, expect to repaint the entire wall if you want the patch to be unnoticeable. Despite using the exact same paint color, the exact finish will never look the same as the rest of the wall unless you repaint the entire wall.

@Johnny AppleStead This video makes it look pretty easy. I'm going to try this on a hole I made on a slanted wall. What brand of joint compound do you recommend? Where do I purchase dry wall? Which grit of sand paper do I use? Can I remove the screws after the process is done?
Also, my walls are a lot thinner than the one in the video. Should I use something other than dry wall, or a different type of dry wall?

This video should be titled "HOW NOT TO FIX A HOLE IN THE WALL". Just to get things clear; I have been a licensed contractor and tradesman for over 45 years building and renovating homes and building large commercial buildings, I hosted my own radio show on Home repairs on a major station and I hosted a TV show for HGTV so I know a few things about building. What he done will crack and telegraph the outline of the repair...forever. I have seen a lot of repair videos and no-one gets it right.
On to the repair, first thing to do is to cut the paper on the broken pieces and remove them from the wall so you can see what is behind there before you start cutting away. Had he done that he would have discovered the wood stud. Now he should have cut the drywall on both sides so he could anchor the repair piece to the stud. The piece of wood he used as a backer was to thin, the screws will split it. Use a piece of 1x2 or plywood, which will not split. he got the part right about cutting a piece of board and tracing it on the wall to create the hole to be cut out. However after cutting the hole you need to cut the outer edges of the drywall surround the hole on a 45 degree chamfer to get rid of the ragged paper edge and to create a void for the initial filler compound; you will need o chamfer the edges of the repair piece as well.
Once everything is screwed in place, and there is no movement of the piece, then fill in the void you created with the chamfer with taping compound and let it dry. A quick note; it would be better to use compound 20, which is a drywall compound that, as the name implies, dries in 20 minutes and is harder than standard taping compound.
Now comes the MAIN PART of the repair...you have to apply either a paper drywall tape or you a fiberglass tape. We usually use the fiberglass tape for repairs, but I use the paper, because I always have tons of it around. Also buy a 6" wide drywall knife, don't get a cheap one get a good metal one that has good flex to it.
To apply the tape, put a generous layer of drywall compound (called mud in the trade) about 1/4" thick and 4" wide over the joints. Apply the tape and by hand and then flatten it down with the 6" drywall knife (Tip: wet the knife so it doesn't grab the tape). Smooth the tape down and remove all of the excess mud, let it dry and apply 2 to three more thin skim coats, sanding lightly in between (Tip: use a wet sanding block to keep the dust down). Use a 120 grit sandpaper or sanding screen. The last coat should be so smooth you hardly need to sand it.
Apply TWO coats of primer sealer and then paint to match.
I can make this repair in one hour, using compound 20 mixed with some Plaster of Paris to speed up the cure time.

Another way is to put some drywall mesh tape over the hole instead of screwing on a new piece of drywall. Cover the hole with mesh tape and then apply a coat of drywall mud. Let the mud dry overnight and then lightly sand the mud , then apply another coat of mud . After the second coat dries you should be able to sand the mud smooth to the walls surface.

This method does work. The only thing I would change would be to apply joint tape to the cracks between the old dry wall and new drywall square. It may allow you to apply one layer of mud instead of having to go over a second time just to fill the cracks. Simply a time saver.

I punched my wall and I had to fix it before my parents got home, what I did was the part that got punched and is pushed in the wall, I took it out than cleaned it up and broke 1 paint stick to two halves that I screwed them inside like he did, than I put the pice of drywall and screwed it to the paint sticks and then I looked everywhere and luckily I found some plaster putty and filled the cracks then let it dry. That sand it down a bit. If you have paint pain it I painted mine and it came out perfect 👌
