My New Pet is Cooler Than an Octopus

  • The flamboyant cuttlefish is the only know poisonous cuttle and only one out of 3 poisonous cephalopods. They don't live very long like other species and they are very rare to come across in the aquarium trade. Luckily a friend spotted these and tipped me off, so I got them. They're intelligence is similar to an octopus and their ability to color change is mesmerizing. They are absolutely stunning to watch. I purchased 2, but 1 inked in the bag and suffocated before I could transfer it into the tank. The other one made it so I took extra care to make sure it survived. I tried feeding it a variety of frozen food, nothing worked except for a live shrimp. I also fed uno her first live crab in a while and moved some octopuses around to make room for the cuttlefish. After some research I found out she was a female cuttlefish and very likely to lay eggs soon. Fingers crossed I will have an cuttlefish nursery soon.

We can't be satisfied with ruining their habitats, the reefs the waters... nope, we're taking animals out of the wild to live in a box. That's if they survive the trip. He said he’s going to wait until the kids are old enough(his wife is pregnant) to be around large tanks and fish they won’t be able to mess with! Meaning he would be the one taking care of the tanks! You remind me of him! He is very smart like you are and has a very inquisitive mind and gets his kids to enjoy so many different things in their lives! I love your videos! The system in the octopus room has 6 tanks running all plumbed together. All the tanks were set up and have been for a while. The cuttle inked during the shipping and transportation I may be wrong but it died before I got a hold of it. The other cuttle was immediately taken out of the bag and put into a holding container. So there was no setup of a tank at all. Moving animals between tanks is not out of the ordinary. since most of the animals I keep are solitary creatures and the water chemistry is the same across all the tanks there is virtually zero stress.

I don't understand why you'd support wild caught pet trade. Buying them sight unseen like this was hard to watch. I know it's a dilemma, leave them there to die or try to save them, but the end result was a death anyway and a reward to the animal traffickers. I dunno. When I think of "rescue" I tend to only think of positive effects, but I know sometimes there's a trade-off concerning ethics. Exotics are more for our pleasure than theirs.

If you leave 1 to die (one was already gone?) then the shop owner might not buy any more and thus his supplier might not catch any more (of this species - catch but release due no profit) perhaps saving many more when there is no market for the product. You are buying for the slaughter, leaving one shouldn't be harder.

    Cuddlefish! With Danger Hugs!
I know that they are very plain, but for those curious about keeping cuttles (probably easier than Octo due to not having to worry about escapes, since cuttles don't climb), could you maybe make a vid on Sepia bandensis / Stumpy Cuttlefish? You can usually but them as fertile eggs, to have them hatch from babies, they get up to 4 inches, tops. But unlike Metasepia pfefferi (Flamboyant Cuttlefish), they are not venomous. So they should be easier to keep to beginners, while being the same size.

I hope everything is ok. I just found your channel, i was hoping to skip ahead to see if the cuttlefish actually did have fertilized eggs but there’s no update on that. I thought it was extremely difficult to keep octopus and some other animals that you’ve mentioned, I didn’t know you could just buy them at an aquarium, so I’m surprised and intrigued to watch more. I hope to find a video about that angler fish, shocked to see that one too.

Consent is usually used to grant permission. Assent which means to express agreement or approval might have been the better word here

A breeding program?? Yuck. Also one of them died, AND you weren't even prepared to take them in?? This is SO irresponsible and selfish.

And thats why u dont support anyone who buys octopus or cuddlefishs.
They are not ment to be kept in such tiny aquariums. Just like any other animal.
With the exception octopus & cuddlefish are intelligent prolly more intelligent than alot of the ppl who abuse them.

As a multi year enthusiast I find it irritating and irresponsible that you’d buy something that your not prepared for. Not to mention it’s poisonous and your channel reaches a lot of ppl. You are sending the wrong message to potential hobbyists. Some animals don’t belong in a tank.

This video was simply wrong. To catch wild species and treat them like that is a big no no as an aquarist. Will never subscribe to this channel. Things must be learn.
