We still use both at UNT (Class of '07). Our official mascot is Scrappy the Eagle. Our unofficial mascot is "Mean" Joe Green. (Oh, and our campus was used to film "Necessary Roughness." The stories about Sinbad tearing up Fry Street are legendary.)
Chuck Noll's very 1st pick was a young DT from North Texas State who transformed the Pittsburgh Steelers from the laughing stock of the NFL to the most dominant franchise in the Super Bowl era. Mean Joe invented a stance called the "Stunt 4-3" where he would line up between the guard and center forcing a double team clearing rush lanes for L. C. and Dwight White and allowed Jack Lambert to roam around untouched at times straight to the ball carrier. He sacrificed his own stats for the good of the team and his rewards are 10 pro bowls, 4 Super Bowl rings and a spot in the Hall of Fame. When Greene retired in 1981, the Steelers in essence retired his position because the team went from a 4-3 to a 3-4 . Like the kid in his commercial, I have to say Thanks Mean Joe for making me a lifelong Steeler fan .
+Erik Gjelsvik bradshaw i dont think was better, he was great but played with an amazing defense, he wouldn't have all those championships without that defence
Look At My Pic, its stupid. Bradshaw was great but he had so much talent around him. Swann, Stallworth, Harris, Bleier, Webster, etc. That defense was insane too. MJG was the leader of that defense, and I don't know if the Steelers would've won those 4 Super Bowls without him.
They showed Dirt Dinardo the guy Greene hugged in the baseball cap he was the Steelers groundskeeper. The guy Al Davis accused of letting the field turn to ice in the 74 AFC Title Game
"hey joe whats that red arm band?" " oh some little kid gave it to me in san diego, says its gonna take us to the super bowl. i gotta wear it if he say that" best football quote ever
There hasn't been a better, more consistent, intimidating defense in the NFL since the '70s Steelers. The '80s Bears and the '00s Ravens came close, but even they don't top the Steelers. How many defenders on that team are Hall-of-Famers? Five? Six? Lambert once said, "It's pretty cool being in the defensive huddle at the Pro-Bowl and looking up and seeing seven or eight guys with Steelers helmets." We may never see something like that again.
WobblinGoblin1, it's ironic that, although the 70s Steelers were lauded for their defensive dominance, they have more offensive players in the HOF. Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth and Webster vs. Greene, Lambert, Ham and Blount.
Definitely gotta give Mean Joe Greene praise no matter what fan you are because he was the start of the "Steel Curtain," the greatest defense in NFL history because of it's sheer dominance not just for one season, but multiple seasons that resulted in 4 Super Bowls in 6 years! The 85 Bears defense might have had the best defense for a season, but the Steel Curtain without a doubt beats what any defense accomplished over a 6 yr stretch!
The 85 BEARS played nobody.Go player for player OTHER THAN R DENT NOBODY on Chicago plays for the 70s STEELERS..The 46 D SKEME won 1 SB playing against nobodys (The 70S Steelers won against Dallas ,Miami ,Oakland ,Houston =some of the best teams EVER.)
Yeah they played against Eric Dickerson in the NFC Championship and held him to 46 yards while never giving up a single point in their two playoff games and then obliterating the Patriots in the Super Bowl without breaking a sweat. Like I said, the 85 Bears had the best defense for a season, but the "Steel Curtain" is the best defense of all time though!
The Steelers of the 70s beat SOME OF THE BEST TEAMS IN NFL HISTORY (DALLAS ,OAKLAND MIAMI ) In SB 13 there was something like 13 hall of famers in the game 13 .Going player for player( BEARS VERSES STEELERS on defence) please tell me what Bear cracks the Steeler line up other than Dent over DWhite .The Bears played NOBODY .Against Marino their LINEBACKERS got destroyed covering in space
Ps regarding holding Dickerson to 46 yards CHECK THE STATS IN 1974. i believe Pittsburg held Oakland to 26 yards in the AFC Champ game and Minn to something like 16 yards in SB 9 so (using YOUR CRITERIA )the STEEL CURTAIN in 8 quarters held their opponent to less rushing yards than the Bears did in 4 quarters
Mr. Greene was and is the best DT too ever play. Hard too believe he's the only one left from the front four. Mr. Greene it was an honor too watch you play every Sunday as a young man

I've heard a story when they played Houston in late 1972, they needed the win to clinch a playoff spot. John Rowser thought the game was slipping away as they went back out to hold the Oilers. Joe went and sacked Dan Pastorini on four straight downs to seal the game (He had 5 for the game). He could take a game over just like that
Mean Joe was the anchor of the greatest NFL defense ever....The Steel Curtain. The 1976 version produced an unheard of *5 shutouts* of the opposing team and 2 more games they held the opponent to only a fg (3 points). Didn't make it to the Super Bowl that year, as their 2 star RB's (Franco Harris & Rocky Bleier) both were injured in a 1rst round playoff blowout over the Colts 40-14 and couldn't play in the AFC Championship game.
If you are a Pittsburgh Steeler fan, Charles Edward "Joe" Greene is where it all started. The Steelers became the Steelers in 1969 when Joe Greene was taken first from North Texas State in Denton, Texas and they started to win. They got more good and great players later ( Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Jack Lambert, you can go on and on), but it started with Joe Greene, which is why he is the highest ranked Steeler on the Top 100 list. (Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe that was the year where we posted 4 consecutive shutouts at the end of the season. I’m fairly certain it was 76, but it might not be.)
No, it was 3 straight in the middle of the season (27-0 over NYG, 23-0 over SD, and 45-0 over KC) and 2 to close out the regular season (42-0 over TB and 21-0 over Hou). Most fans and players themself, including Art Rooney himself, said the 1976 team was their best ever

Mean Joe is the greatest at his position, but I'm surprised Warren Sapp isn't on this list. Guy won a ring, defensive mvp and list of pro bowls, and was arguably the greatest pass rushing DT of all time.
Greatest defensive player ever. Combined size strength and quickness like no other defensive player. Joe couldn't bench press his own weight, but had natural strength you can't get in a weight room.
