Well, you can’t deny that they had some other great pieces too. Franco Harris was an all time great along with Jack Lambert and Mel Blount which alone probably would of gotten them the 4 Super Bowls in the 70s

He made them believe ,he held them accountable he chastised those who were rebellious he firmly put his foot down literally at times on those who dissented ,his presence impacted the entire team . Bradshaw's biggest vice at times even as a Probowl, All Pro, SB winning QB was his penchant for ints ,Franco is tied with Dorsett for most career fumbles as a RB with 99 , in other words the Steelers were going to turn the ball over in abundance , so that Steelers defense anchored by Joe Greene had to nulify the excessive turnovers the Steelers offense routinely committed .Joe Greene forced every other Steelers front 7 member to have too encounter only one blocker sometimes none ,why ? Because Greene was occupying two blockers ,sometimes three ,he sacrificed individual stats like sacks to improve his teams chances for victory .Inthe storied Vikings purple people defensive scheme in which the Defensive lineman agressively rushed up field attacking the QB first ,Joe Greene would have easily collected 100 QB sacks . Joe Greene was the most important Steelers player during that dynasty run ,and in team history .His teammate Andy Russell stated Joe Greene was the player of the 70's decade , a youtube page on players of the decades during the SB era also stated this . I remember when i was a kid, oiler fans use to say nobody can tackle Earl Campbell one on one when he was in his prime. Joe Green hold my beer.
I've also seen videos of Jack Lambert, Steelers MLB, tackling Campbell by himself.
After watching this I had forgotten how fast and good Joe was.
His off the ball quickness is insane
Call me crazy, but I saw a man making every tackle trying NOT to hurt people. He wrapped them up or tripped them. He could have leveled them, but he didn't. He may have been Mean Joe, but I saw a lot of care in how he played too. That speaks volumes to me about his character.
Not crazy at all. What he did was called form tackling. Not like today's players looking for the highlight reel big hit. Youi wanna teach a kid how to tackle properly, watch Joe Greene play,

Yeah everyone thinks of the nickname and just imagines some big huge monster and while he was obviously strong it’s his quickness that made him one of the best of all time.

Even during the later stages during his pinced neck nerve injury he was still very good ,no longer great ,no one still detailed him because of his high football IQ ,and excellent fundamentals . Great players historically would dominate in any era if they had access to the enhanced diet,medicine , equipment, medical surgery procedure of athletes in latter eras . Imagine Mean Joe Greene ,Bob Lily , Alan Page ,Randy White ,Manny Fernandez , Ernie Holmes with those improved amenities at 300 lbs.

Is it just me or did he have an uncanny sense of timing at the snap. He gets through in a blur and those who do contest get dealt with through leverage more than brute strength. This is what I gather from the first time watching mean joe green highlights. Very impressive for a man that size as he was clearly dwarfing some of the offensive line. All this from using his name in a rhyme so I said...let's see what the means all about,not disappointed cause his mean ,is nice.

Before he injured his neck [ Pinched Nerve ] at the start of the 1975 season he was the BEST AND MOST FEARED defensive tackle of all time WITHOUT A DOUBT !! After the injury he himself admitted he basically played the last 7 years of his career WITH ONE ARM and he was STILL a force to be reckoned with !
The GOAT at his position and played nearly the last half of career with one arm.
He was one of the few who just knew where the ball was, no tricks, no BS. He was going to get whoever had the ball, all the time.

I watched a TV game years ago and saw Joe Greene haul-off and gut punch Paul Howard of The Broncos. He kept holding Joe on multiple occasions. Mean Joe took action himself - since the officials would not call holding, so Joe took care of it himself.

If Greene didn’t get you, Lambert did. In 1976, the Steelers defense gave up just 28 points in their last 9 games and 5 shutouts for the season.

at the 0:55 mark of this video, this is what makes joe greene the best ever, the field isn't any smaller than it is now but no way from a 3 point stance does aaron donald get to that spot on the field in that short of a time period, even if unblocked
