I received the black model a few days ago and am more than satisfied with the quality. I was thinking about buying the Tudor bb54 in 37mm and was on the verge of buying it until I realised that San Martin was also bringing out a 54bb and wanted to give it a chance and I don't regret it. The watch cost me about 250€ with customs clearance (Germany). The purchase saved me a lot of money.
I ordered the San Martin BB54 for the same reason. I want to test drive what a 37 mm Tudor would look and feel on my wrist. I'm afraid Tudor will never get 4K Euros from my wallet! Lol
Thanks for the review on this! I like where they're going with this, but there are a few things I'd like them to upgrade. Like the bezel color not quite matching, bring the thickness down, and use their new shorter on the fly clasp. I think the shorter clasp would look and fit better on this smaller watch. Good job on your video quality, it's top notch!
They really should start buying NH38s. I get that buying NH35 in bulk makes it flexible because they can manufacture more models with the same parts but I'm sure people would be willing to pay a little more to have the right part.
For context, I started working as a commercial diver in 2000. I used a dive computer in conjunction with a DW5600 for 99.77283% of my dives. These watches will likely never ever see the sea ( 😀), so ultimate legibility/size/water resistance is pointless. Comfort, quality and a decent price should be your only concern. That's my 2c spent.
Lol most watch enthusiast never wear their watches under the shower indeed 😂 In general I definitely would trade some WR for less thickness in particular and keep a 100m resistance, because with a good splash at the sea/swimming pool, and swimming in general, the pressure drastically increases. And a screw down crown, not for WR as only Rolex uses a patent that specifically increases the WR like that ( the gasket keeps the WR on other watches, not the screw ) but because I'm a bit afraid of unscrewing a crown by accident, especially a big one. UA-cam's obsession for 200m WR and all the perks is borderline on the spectrum, it comes from the SKX madness I believe. They're not even touched by rain. And probably a false assomption that a heavy watch will be more resistant while it's quite the opposite, steel won't handle shocks anyway. Pretty cool job by the way, I do snorkling and plan to start diving this year :) I'll finally put my dive watch to a real test 😂
@@H0kram how does the pressure drastically increase? Water pressure at its respective depth is equal from all directions upon the watch, only if you move your arm theoretically faster than the water is able will pressure be relieved from one side but will however remain identical on the remaining side, pressure does not change based on movement, especially not what a person is capable of.
Great review. San Martin continues to create a good value for dollar watches, by the end of this year or beginning of next year I can imagine how many more models they will have and with greater improvements with less QC concerns.
Am gutted mine hasn’t arrived yet. They posted mine before the Chinese New Year celebrations but there was a problem with it and it’s been retuned to them. Great stuff as ever man 👍👍
I understand that ceramic is a superior material, but personally I would prefer a well done aluminum bezel. I know they scratch, but I think they look better and are more accurate to the original in a lot of cases. Nice review!
100% agree. Would have much preferred an aluminum bezel...I'm pretty tired of Ceramic these days...lol. aluminum or sapphire inserts are my weak spot tight now 😂
Beautiful looking watch ! San Martin could have done better by breaking with exact homage by putting in an accurate and more practical quartz movement. I would then buy it for sure.
Great thorough review, you do spot faults more than other reviewers 👍. San Martin are so lazy using nh35 in no date watches, OK on a £90 Invicta 1953, not OK on a £175 San Martin.
I think they need to shave a millimeter and a bit off the thickness of this to really suit the smaller diameter, otherwise it just looks too slab sized and bulbous. Guess I'm waiting for the V2 with a PT5000 or something?
That is my thought too. It needs a thinner case and a high beat ETA 2824 based movement. ~11mm would make a big difference. Very few if any people are diving with these so you'd think there would be some wiggle room there.
San Martin has started selling a new version of this watch (model SN0138GW) with a printed logo (!) and two new color options: green bezel with black dial and pink bezel with black dial.
The Tudor is oretty slab sidded. So this is a spot on homage. The finishing on this looks amazing and the fit and matching curve for the bracelet and the lugs is off the charts. Inhave the sn004, but im thinking of getting this for thst real vintage size and feel - and i have a 7.5 inch wrist. Not bothered by that size at all
This is a phenomenal watch. IMO their biggest detriment is themselves. They have already offered several great BB54 Homages. Unless someone REALLY wants this size, I not sure someone will buy another SM BB54 Homage. Again phenomenal watch though. Thanks for the thorough review!
Just wondering, what is Tudor took this watch and replace the movement and branding what the price would be. A Sellita SW1000-1 sells for $350 retail (Top Grade COSC) for reference. Sellita Sw1000-1 $350 minus Seiko NH34 $50 (or less) = $300 plus the watch and another $150 profit = $685. I own a handful of Swiss watches (R,O) and wonder how long they can keep saying they are better at the prices they charge?
I think you’re misunderstanding the whole concept of luxury, it isn’t based on the cost of materials alone. It costs Tudor millions to manufacture their own in house movement, their own designs, and marketing campaigns. Yet san Martin jump on board and steal designs, they don’t have to do any of the above, so is it any wonder that they cost less than percent of a real Tudor.
Mind sharing how you open that type of caseback? I have a case back removal “press” type tool that takes attachments but the back of this case seems to take a Rolex style attachment but is recessed into the case.
Looks good, but sticking with my larger SN004 and SN008 pieces. If they do both the matte bezel and matte dial in black, I might be forced to dip again, but with a 7.5 inch wrist sub 38 feels too small for a diver (for me personally)
I love the san martin homage, but never buy one yet afraid by the acuracy of seiko basic mouvment ,i have seiko with nh35 mouvment and loose 20 seconds per day who looks to much for me,can you tell me if san martin is more precise?
Looks great. Its good tonsee that san martin removed the chromring between the crystal and the bezzel. On my older bb58 homage that ring sucks a bit. But i got the original to so its ok and i gifted the san martin to the father of my wife. 👍🏻
This one is too small for me, personally. So SN0121. As far as everything goes, they are very similar in style and build quality. I can't say one is better than the other.
I have noticed that some of their coin edge bezels have sharp top edge. I guess the way it is tooled, maybe because of the price skipped the deburring of it. IMHO San Martin needs just few tweaks and maybe some standardised models, parts to make them the very best watch makers today. For the price. If they step up with quality they can demand more money. Personally I'd like them to increase the quality, even though they are the best in their league. San Martin beats Ipose, Sugess and all other watch makers in this price range. For example San Martin uses metal movement ring on PT5000, which is at the moment mine most accurate mechanical (+1to +5s CH12, worn 0s/day) movement and Ipose uses cheap plastic retaining ring and fresh out of the box their PT5000 had calender issue. Nice video, nice watch.
They are so close. I'd buy which one you like more. Quality is the same between the 2. Only negative I see on the SN004 is the crystal. Single dome isn't my favorite but some dig it.
I like the size, it gives it a nice vintage appeal and looks just fine on your wrist IMHO. It would be nice if they could shave down the thickness a bit, even at the cost of depth rating. It would make it just a little more svelte. Now if only San Martin would make a proper Black Bay One Ref. 7923/001 homage. Lol
Thank you for the review! I have a question regarding the bracelet size of the SN0138: All shops state how LONG it is and all reviewers tell about how many links they took out for their personal wrist size. As I only have about 15cm (5.9in) wrists, is it possible too make the bracelet SHORT enough to fit? I would really appreciate your help as I couldn't find the information anywhere on the internet :) Thanks in advance!
You may need to put it on another bracelet or rather on a strap. Most bracelets taper and you can only remove a few of the links. My wrists are 16.5cm and I often get pretty close to the maximum links that can be removed sadly. Beyond a certain point, the links change size and don't fit the clasp. I hope this makes sense? it does look pretty good on the nato or leather/suede straps.
It's ridiculous how fast they copy popular designs and release them. Nothing against San Martin, they make ok watches for the price but I wish they would focus more on producing their own designs.
They do produce their own designs (my new SM dragon GMT being the perfect example) but the homages sell better. Can't blame a brand for making what people want.
