    If your alt and Windows keys are switched despite being in Windows mode, switch from Windows to Mac and back to Windows, that should take care of your key positions.

      This is awesome thank you! Based on this video (which is great, info packed, very useful) I was able to convince myself this is the right one for me and I am typing this already on my GMK87!
      I was looking for the above answer and this resolved the left alt and left win keys swapped issue.
      It seems this changed the default function keys behaviour too back to normal!
      Out of the box it was you'd have to press FN + F1-F12 to get the function keys (which isn't good for me)!
      Thank you for this video, saved a lot of time and money for me and also contributed a lot for me to get and build my 1st mechanical keyboard! I am in love with it!

    Just got my GMK87 through today in Black. I had set of Leobog Greywood V4 in 205g0 at hand and some PBT CSA caps. I think ABS case and Greywood is a real sound cheat code. This is a deep sounding case but with 2 sheets of 2mm silicon sheet added instead of the loose open foam and the sound really tightens up and brings out the greywoods. This is the deepest I have had them sound, normally in Alu case it brings out a clack in them but this....
    Really impressive kit

    Thank you for your review, been looking forward to it!
    Especially for some of the info that isn't shared anywhere else, like the retained pcb stab option etc.
    Reading through the comments, seems like you also already got your GMK81, so am looking forward to a comparison or review to compare to the GMK87. Like I saw that the 81 doesn't come with the PET sheet for some reason.
    Definitely will pick one of these up, but I'll try to be patient for once and wait for your reviews haha
    The 87 does sound a bit hollow stock, so also looking forward to the modding video.

    That's pretty funny, I've Just ordered this keyboard and switches before discovering this video. Although, i did order XDA keycaps, as I understand they should add more "thocky" sound than mx Cherry ones. • @albertko1
    @albertko1 9 місяців тому +1

    Hoping they do more colors like with the 67. I've seen it on sale for around $30 on AliX so hoping during CNY sales can pick on up for even cheaper!
    I actually lubed my Graywood V4s and now zero crap sounds, consistent sound and smooth feel. That said, the metal pins on the switch are THIN, nowhere near as thick as other switches so just need to be extremely careful inserting into hotswap sockets especially if you're trying to pierce through a PET or PE layer. They totally are clacky mahjong/dominos sounding... A warm comfy midrange clack. Very little stem or housing wobble and VERY easy to open despite the Kailh box housing

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  9 місяців тому

      I do believe it's called wing latch housings; Kailh box applies to the different switch mechanism they use.

    @tottiez 9 місяців тому +1

    Hi, thanks for the review! I just ordered a one, it was on sale from the Cutesliving store for around 40 euros, including VAT for EU.
    I have 2 questions.
    Regarding punching out the holes before inserting the switches, isnt there a chance to puncture the battery by mistake? I think I will rather open up the keyboard and do it without the battery, as puncturing a battery can be hazardous, not mentioning the fact your keyboard will be destroyed.
    Also, for the switches, I was thinking about getting a set of the Greywoods, they are really cheap at the moment, I do use a set of KTT Kang Whites and i like the sound, however they seem a bit scratchy when pressing the keycaps on the outer edge instead of directly in the center. I would also like maybe getting a bit lighter switch, but that does not matter. Are Greywoods more scratchy than white KTTs?

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  9 місяців тому

      1. I use a plastic spudger to punch out the holes, which will not puncture the battery, unless I was really determined! Removing it from the case to do it first will also make inserting the switches easier.
      2. Many switches are scratchy when new due to microabrasions in the plastic, after some use though, they rub each other away and become smoother. I like both Kang White and Graywoods and have sets of each that are broken in and smooth as glass.

    • @tottiez
      @tottiez 9 місяців тому +1

      @@MechKeyboards thanks for the answer. When I received my Kang whites I lubed them without using them prior to lubing, do you think the results in terms of less scratchiness would be better if I "broke" them in, prior to lubing? Do switches even break in when lubed?

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  9 місяців тому +1

      @@tottiez any time there is action or friction, they are being broken in. Over time they will wear away to become even and smooth, lubed or not.

      They both are good, the Aula as a prebuilt, and this one as a barebone; I could use either and would have no complaints. I picked another one up for $30, so between the low price and the fact it at least has partial VIA, the GMK87 would have a slight edge.

    Got mine ordered a few days back for around $40USD couple of days ago, so at that price its a no brainer to grab :) Will be interesting to see how it shapes up. The budget market has really got competitive recently. I think the slew of Alu boards like the Sugar65 etc have forced the ABS case based stuff cheaper. These Zuoya CMK range are interesting. 67 is great but a little hampered by the closed firmwear. Then the new 75% and TKL crop up and all well priced.
    I have both the V3 and V4 Graywoods, in some way I prefer V3 as they have a very slightly different force curve than the newer.

    Theres a flaw with this board and with some modding i fixed it. The PCB is a flex cut and it has a layer of plastic film on top of it and its not cut according to the flex cuts, followed by the PE Sheet. The plastic film is causing the issue, cos when u put in switches, its so flexible that the plastic pushes out the switches from the other sockets.
    The easy way is to just remove the whole plastic thing out but if u want to leave it on check the steps below.
    So i recommend opening up the board by pushing from the inside out. Remove the wires, screws and take out the PCB. Next use a box cutter to cut the plastic along the Flex cut lines, after doing this it should solve your problem but the plastic still makes a sound when they flap around as you type. Then u use a thin wire or a cheap keycap puller u have and a lighter to heat up one side of the wire. Then carefully burn the plastic ends along the flex cuts to make it seemless, now you dont have the plastic flapping sound and you have the plastic film still on. Good luck.

    From my understanding of the situation, the gmk81/87 are just plastic OEM versions of the Cidoo v75 plus/v87 respectively. Arguably better than those boards though in some ways. The v75 plus doesn't have RGB and the v87 doesn't have a screen.

    • @MechKeyboards

      I picked a Cidoo V65 locally today, never opened, for dirt cheap and I'm surprisingly impressed. The board sounds amazing out of the box. Stabs weren't lubed but that was a quick fix. We will see about the longevity though. If this is just a plastic V75 that might be a big plus. I've never really dealt with Epomaker except for a major discount they gave me on some new switches when I caught a livestream, which I actually really like once I tried them, but the boards and forums are full in "interesting" stories to put it nicely. If it was just one person it might be easy to write off but they are pretty consistent across multiple people who are more knowledgeable and have been doing this for much longer than I have.
