I just love this series. My grandmother and my great grandparents came from Italy in 1907 and lived on Mulberry street. It makes me sad that Little Italy has lost most of it's italians. Michael I wish you all good things in life and that you will always remain in your apartment. I wish time didn't change things. I always went to Little Italy every year but it has changed much. God Bless you.
Bravo Michael! His testimony brought tears to my eyes because although I am not a New Yorker, I was born/raised in what was then Chicago's "Little Italy" after WW 2. Many people lost their buildings and apartments after 1963 when I was in high school; the University of Illinois, with the [then] Mayor Richard J. Daley's 'blessing' confiscated and demolished entire blocks of Italian family owned row houses, small bungalows, apartment buildings, family businesses, butcher, baker, pork stores, even several churches demolished, [one was our family parish] all in the name of 'progress. Little Italy 'disappeared' and is now trendy, ridiculously expensive and a "United Nations" of people due to the presence of the huge University built over what were Italian immigrants homes and small businesses and apartments like Michael's. I am 3 years older than Michael so I share his memories and what we as Italian-Americans lost: the collective sense of community identity, fellowship and care for one another. Hang in there Michael!
That wasn’t in the name of progress. Everyone on earth knows that was Daleys warning shot against the Outfit, by deliberately breaking apart their primary power base of Taylor Street. NY has always been a primarily Italian city. CHI is an anti-Italian city. The Poles & Irish were the majority, and they despised the Italians
Wow Michael what a nostalgic apartment I would love to visit you . Little Italy is where my Great grandmother and grandfather settled . Little Italy has always been a favorite of mine .
Again....same since episode 1...Standing Ovation,,,🙌 💯💯. The days of neighborhoods, community, pitching in to pick up your fellow man, woman and child (family).. Gone.. That is true value....wealth...the meaning of being truly Rich! Stand for Something or you are doomed to fall for anything!
Fight the good fight. Seeing the inside of that apartment reminds me of my grandparents home in Cleveland. My uncle still lives in that house and I’m thankful that it’s still in the family with all the memories that it holds. Thanks for these videos. Enjoying the series.
Mr & Mrs Scorcesse had the same painting of the Calmaday Sisters in their apartment as you do and I have it too handed down from my Italian, Sicilian grandparents😂 the original hangs in the Met
It's extremely hard watching this series, it is so sad to see the end of Little Italy, I can feel it slipping away and I can feel life slipping away, this will never come back
I'm really enjoying this series. It's the same all over the world, same here in London. People who were born and raised here are being priced out and yuppies are moving in. The Landlords only care about money 🇮🇹
I live off the grid in New Mexico. My mother-in-law traded the quarter acre for an oriental rug. There are no services, but it is totally self-sufficient with solar, and water catch. I pay 5 dollars a year for property taxes. There is no value in the land and house really, but it is my home and isn't that what we all want and what should be our right to have.
If you don't invest in your community; someone else will. Financial literacy is always key. Chinese neighborhoods are still Chinese, Indian neighborhoods are still Indian and Williamsburg Brooklyn is still Jewish. If families invest and stick together; the sky is the limit.
That is a great law, what you are talking about here, the right of succession, that, when all is said and done,is the way things should be, unfortunately I've never heard of anything like that over here, IN London England, good luck to you
Brilliant. On the production side, I love what you did with the gramophone and the old timey music. May I ask...was that part of the script or you went to the apartment, saw it and got the idea to open with that?
Paying $85.25 per month for an apartment in Manhattan doesn’t pay the water bill, much less the heating bill. This guys air of entitlement is nauseating.
@@stephenfisher3721 There are a lot of people from the tri-state region where I am, New York over the last decade is different from the one I was living in at the time. Now that you mention it there was a bakery near my old place that made fantastic cannoli but it closed years ago.
I’m all for tenants not being gouged by greedy landlords thinking it’s fair to charge 4k a month to live in tiny , outdated apartments but hanging on to a place for decades and getting away with paying $87 a month?! That’s called being a parasite. This is part of the reason why landlords in nyc have to gouge the young.
@@josephtomaselli9181 Michael didn’t create the laws so what you are saying is the politicians who created rent control are parasites. I’m OK with that. 👌🏻
@@PaulStoneFilms Michael absolutely beat the landlord at his own game but he shouldn't really expect the landlord to upgrade his apartment while paying 80$ a month. That's basically like asking the landlord for charity.
The rent control laws were put in place in 1943 and it’s absolutely ludicrous that people are paying under $100 for an apartment in NYC. I don’t care how you try to rationalize it. I do believe in rent stabilized and “lottery” apartments, but rent controlled apartments need to go.
I recently moved into a prewar rent stabilized building in NYC and noticed that some of my neighbors are fairly ancient. I’m paying $2450. I’m sure some of them are paying $900/mo. as they have been since 1970.
"Location, location, location." 3 most important words in real estate. He is single, in Little Italy, and has a beautiful big home super cheap. No need for a car.
While I respect that this guy has a low rent. But 87 dollars a month has plenty of room to increase upward. I'm not saying it should be anywhere near the thousands but it can increase for the sake of helping contribute to building upkeep.
This series is amazing and preserving history.
for $87 a month i'd happily take those inconveniences

What an amazingly preserved apartment . It looks like it hasn't changed since the 50s
It hasn’t changed since 1898. 🤣

Michael, you don't have an apartment, you have a museum, a true time capsule into at least two eras of Italian American life in Little Italy.

$87.25 for rent in Little Italy, most peoples property tax is more than his yearly rent.
One good thing left about nyc is rent control.
