The Last Days of Little Italy: An Original Documentary Series.
Little Italy, a historic haven for immigrant families from the old country, was once threatened by an ever-expanding Chinatown. But now the fatal blow is being delivered by the gentrifiers. Corporations, yuppies, and chain stores all moved in. How did Little Italy transform itself from a working class neighborhood of tenement buildings to the third most expensive zip code in the United States?
Part funny, part sad, the series explores the impact gentrification is having on Little Italy's long-term residents. The striking imagery captures the neighborhood before it is completely erased by sterile trendy stores and upper middle class sameness.
Will New York City lose another cultural touchstone to the forces of greed?
A Nolita Films Production
Written and Directed by Paul Stone
Produced by Claudia Montano
Cinematography & Editing by Paul Stone
Shot in New York City, Rome, Amalfi Coast & Puglia, Italy.

I'm from Scotland, really didn't realise until recently what's happened to Mullberry St. Gentrification of areas like this with such heritage is very sad. Society has changed drastically in my 46 years, and not for the better if you ask me.

Good for you!!! Stand your ground. These owners are greedy. Heaven or hell, you can't take your money with you.

In NYC if you’re 62 and over or are disabled ur entitled to a rent freeze.
It's sad that we are losing our history
... Great Doc., 👍 - & as for Times Square? 🤯
Support locals. Doesn't need to be NY. But support where you live
Great man Ernie, The best gift shop The italian gift shop Put over a hundred years God bless ernie❤
So sad how everything changed
it's true. NY landlords used to want to keep their tenants and then neighbors knew each other. Now they want turnover because every time they get a new tenant, they can jack up the rent and nobody knows who lives in the building. .
These are lovely films.

So many neighborhoods back then not just below Houston street. There was Chelsea with the Irish and Puerto Ricans up into Hells Kitchen.!
My two good friends from Con Edison Jackie Porcello and Ritchie Porcello were from this neighborhood...

Great documentary but very sad story. It was once 40 or so blocka now it's almost gone. American greed at its best.
We grew up on St Marks Pl and 1st Ave...............After traveling the World we can report that NYC is the most expensive City on the Planet .........So the question is who did that ?
Great video. Bella but at the same time sad. Same old story 😢 Bigg love Charlie ❤

Ahh Chaloots 🤌
I used to go there and buy their bread that had cheese and prosciutto mixed in. Also was the only place that sold spinach lasagna.
My Mom grew up on Hester Street. Her crib was a draw they took out of their dresser at night. Ciao.

Thank You, some of my family is from little Italy, you are a 100% right about everything, sad to see it change from when I was a kid, much better times you felt safe in a busy Neighbor-hood people looked out for one another, shame to see how it is now. Thank God we still have Baby John their the cannoli king holding it down for all of us Italians.

I grew up in flushing in the early 70’s. The city built a project on main street and northern Blvd, with that came crime and locking our doors. Got so bad we moved out to Long Island. The East Asians finally moved into flushing. They were willing to put up with the bullshit. Now it’s boba shops and massage parlors with happy endings. End of the American empire aka the original European Union.
Back in the 90’s thought gentrification was a really great thing after having grown up in nyc in the bad old days. In hindsight, all we did was destroy all shreds of character and sense of community. I can’t stand these over educated, wealthy, and spoiled NPC’s that took over the city .
I grew up on 1st ave and 2nd st. New York is now just for the rich. No neighborhoods anymore and everything is shiny and new. When I was a kid above 14th st was a whole different world. Alphabet City back in the day was full of characters, some good, some bad, but it all gave flavor to the mix. Better stop as now I'm sounding old.
funny anyone near or south of 14'st would call it uc or the square ( union square ) and nyc their's to little Italy's i grew up on hester and mott street and 14'th is way from lower Manhattan
I love these videos.

Does Charlie Brown still live there?
He moved away but hangs out here a lot.
This is great. I’m from Cleveland and was in NYC last week and got to walk down Mulberry and have lunch. I really appreciate the history of the area!!!
It's always great to see people appreciate the history of the area.
I got to tell you, me and my wife are looking for a house for our daughter to grow up and where the neighborhoods are safe and everybody gets along well. The neighbors look out for each other. The neighborhood is tight and I’ll tell you what we just can’t find one to be back in the day when we were growing up when all the parents looked out for the kids, everybody everybody everybody hung out together in the cul-de-sac trying to find my kid. It’s been a rough road and I’m in Florida nonetheless might have to move to New York.
My Dad had his butcher shop at 45 Spring Street. Grew up on 265 Lafayette Street
Moe's gorgeous granddaughters runs the butchery now. 🙇♀️
Wow!! Mille grazie!! ❤️❤
As someone (Black, Sicilian, and English) who grew up and still lives down here in South Jersey (Paulsboro, Gibbstown, and Woodbury area in Gloucester County). We see the changes down here too, fewer old timer Italian, Irish, German, Polish, and Black Americans, and more Latino (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Guatemalan, and Salvadoran), younger Black American, Arab, and Southeast Asian families. The cuisine is already more diverse from even ten years ago (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central American, Middle Eastern, and Asian food). It’s not just Italian Pizzerias, Restaurants, Bakeries, Delis, Chinese Takeout, Bars, and Soul Food anymore. We still have small business but they are declining and some streets are blighted by poverty and abandonment.
My heart is sad❤❤❤😢😮😢😢😢
Excellent series of videos &, though I'm in a small town just north of London here in the England, the story is the same wherever you go. All the individualism, the originality, the people knowing each other has gone. Every town is the same now... I could go on & on & you'd recognise the same demise. Thanks again for these videos!
I wonder if he owned or rented his apartment. If he rented, then I know the landlord became happy and raised the rent by a couple of thousand dollars! Change is good, but it’s critical to integrate into a new neighborhood by honoring the original tenants and healthy customs. New comers shouldn’t behave in a condescending manner towards original residents, nor should they ignore, dismiss, or criminalize original tenants.
Thanks!
Thank you!
